The 35 Best Restaurants in Florence, Italy | Eater

"Located in what historically was a walled garden plot belonging to the nuns of Santa Verdiana, this contemporary neighborhood trattoria on the doorstep of the Sant’Ambrogio market has a little something for everyone. For vegetarians, there’s the pane carasau (Sardinian flatbread) layered like millefoglie with smoked eggplant and whipped burrata, while omnivores can enjoy grilled meat with buttery roast potatoes, amberjack-stuffed pasta with crispy squash blossoms and salmon roe, butter and anchovy Tuscan pici (udon-like pasta), and squab glazed with pomegranate reduction. Ingredients are sourced from the market butchers and produce vendors, along with local cheeses from artisans in the Chianti countryside. Best for: Groups that include both picky eaters and gourmands." - Coral Sisk

L'Ortone

"This Tuscan-style bistro next to Sant'Ambrogio market is simple both in its decor and cuisine, offering a menu which features a few regional dishes alongside imaginative Italian-themed options prepared from seasonal ingredients. Grilled specialities are also available, alongside an interesting wine list. Excellent value for money, although if you order the steak you’ll end up spending a little more." - Michelin Inspector

Google
Our first Michelin restaurant. We thought that would be the type of place with small portions and overpriced meals. Nothing like that! The service was great, the menu can satisfy a wide variety of tastes, and you don’t need to eat after that on another place 😀 Your visit to Florence must definitely include this restaurant at least once!

Not what I expected, but much better. Not pretentious at all, just friendly, helpful staff and great food. My wife had the egg pasta and I enjoyed the octopus. Mine was tender and delicately flavored and she finished every bite. Don’t hesitate, just go!

I visited L’Ortone with my wife and daughter almost two weeks ago and we had a lovely dining experience. All the food was fantastic! I especially enjoyed the fried beef tongue with caramelized onions and gnocchi. Both are must try dishes! Our server was also spectacular. A wonderful woman but I can’t remember her name, so I can’t provide a shout out.

Literally the BEST food I've had in the 8 days of the trip. The food is better than anything I've had before. Perfectly al dente, sauces soak so well and taste like heaven. The staff are very kind and attentive as well. The atmosphere is ofcourse good. We visited twice just for their homemade egg pasta with tomato sauce.

Google
Amazing place to visit for a dinner. The best trattoria i visited in Florence. Food is excellent, service is excellent and atmosphere is the correct for a dinner paired with a fine wine!! Try the bistecca alla florentia and the pici pasta!

Google
Our tour guides recommended this trattoria, and it was absolutely delicious. We enjoyed some great wine and very tasty food while sitting outside in a lovely spot. You can also sit inside, where the atmosphere is cozy and welcoming. The prices are a bit on the higher side, but the quality of the food definitely makes it worth it.

An incredible experience! The waitresses gave us excellent advice on the wine selection. We started with crispy fried sardines and the heavenly coccoli with stracchino and cured ham – an absolute delight. For the main course, we tried different cuts of meat: striploin, beef tenderloin, and the bistecca. One of the best meat experiences we’ve ever had – juicy, melt-in-your-mouth tender, perfectly seasoned, and with that unmistakable charcoal-grilled flavor. Simply delicious! To round things off, we enjoyed a creamy tiramisu that was the perfect ending to the meal. Our expectations were far exceeded – especially thanks to the sensational Bistecca!

Yelp
Yum! Although they were fully booked, they were able to accommodate us last minute, which I'm so grateful. Full disclosure, I've had some bad experiences with some Michelin restaurants ..... so I was a bit sceptical when I first arrived and saw the multiple year Michelin rating on their door. To my pleasant surprise, they were not pretentious and the ambiance was cozy and welcoming. The best part of this whole experience was the food. We wanted to try everything, but settled on ordering a number of dishes to share. My favourite were the saffron risotto, spaghetti with burrata cream, and the crunchy octopus. I would go back in a heartbeat.

Yelp
Amazing, Authentic, Tuscan Lunch! I found this restaurant through the Michelin website. It's one of only eight restaurants in Florence with a Bib Gourmand rating which almost always means the food will be excellent. We had the opportunity to eat at L'Ortone for lunch during our trip to Florence. It was quite busy and we were glad to have had a reservation as every table was full. There's a chalkboard where you walk in the lists wine by the glass which is worth noting if you're looking for less than a full bottle. The service was prompt, friendly, and extremely helpful. The waiter took his time in explaining the subtleties of each dish as well as which was most popular. I wanted a glass of wine and the waiter suggested an amazing local Chianti. We tried a salted cod appetizer, pasta pomodoro, picci with anchovies and breadcrumbs, grilled squid, and the filet steak. Everything was well prepared and delicious. The filet steak was a generous portion, close to 10-12 ounces if I had to guess. French Limousin beef grown in Italy. It had an amazing flavor although it was slightly overcooked. Instead of medium, it came out medium plus or almost medium well. I understand that medium rare is the typical request in Tuscany so I'm not going to hold that against them. This is an impressive restaurant with outstanding food and service to match. It's a great place for lunch and i am sure for dinner as well. Highly recommended Food: 4.5 Stars Service: 5 Stars Ambiance: 4.5 Stars

Yelp
Interesting dishes, but not inspiring. Fun atmosphere and a young crowd. Not likely to repeat but I'm not in Florence often.

Yelp
Probably my favorite lunch during our 5 night stay in Florence. Found L'Ortone via the Michelin Guide and made a reservation for lunch on a Wednesday. I'd say reservations are recommended. We sat on their lovely patio. Our antipasto was fried beef tongue. I ordered a gnocchi with a beef ragou and saffron cream sauce paired with a Chianti. My partner ordered a prawn risotto. My gnocchi was outstanding!

Yelp
Laughed away at bar - had a great experience previously, went tonight with hopes of dessert, wine, espresso and port 30 minutes before closing with plenty of seats at the bar- we were told to go around the corner to a bar, rudely.

Yelp
Our favorite restaurant during our 1.5 week trip to Rome and Florence. L'Ortone was recommended by a local and we made reservations before our trip for our party of 6. Reservations can be made online from their website. Both server and sommelier were very knowledgeable and made recommendations based on our interests. They were both very welcoming, and did not treat us pretentiously at all for being tourist. My three favorite dishes were the anchovy pasta, lobster gnocchi, and of course the florentine steak. We were recommended to order 0.5-1kg per person so we ordered a 3kg for our party of 6 in addition to plenty of additional pasta and appetizer dishes. I'm not a big steak person so was skeptic if I would impressed by the infamous florentine steak but I was wrong! The cut and flavor of the dry-aged steak is delicious. Its definitely a must-try while in Florence.

Yelp
This restaurant had a more contemporary look. The food was amazing, service was fair but the wait staff was attentive and answered our questions at length. We had an excellent meal and wrapped up with yummy desserts. Would definitely recommend this place if you would like to go to a more modern restaurant.

Yelp
This is the only food I daydream about from our trip to Italy. Everything was perfection from the second we walked in until we walked out the door. So fresh, so flavorful, cooked perfectly. Had the spaghetti with tomatoe/burrata cream, mixed salad, caponata, potatoes, and tiramisu. Of course a bottle of red sun to top it off. Great fun for the experience.

Yelp
This place was amazing. Went in for dinner with another couple and had the pork belly appetizer, steak, pastas, dessert. Everything was great. Would recommend to anyone in the area. Also for being a Michelin restaurant the prices were amazing compared to what you would experience in the US.

Yelp
Walked in for lunch -- they only had room outside, given the heatwave, which we gladly took. The fresh cheese selection was excellent, the millefieue was divine, the beans serviceable, the stuffed pasta perfectly all dente, and the service was exceptional. A great lunch next to the market (and pro tip, lots of free parking here on a weekday just outside of the ZTL and a convenient walk to Florence's museums and cultural sites).

Yelp
I was the first person to arrive at the restaurant. They give me a horrible table to sit with no option to choose one. The nhoque was super salted. I did not like.

Nicole S.

Yelp
I was looking forward to eating here, however, my experience was extremely disappointing. The staff were very rude, especially the owner. The owner yelled at us for being slightly late for our reservation and told us that our business does not matter to him. Meanwhile, the restaurant was empty and there was plenty of room for us. We eventually sat down and ate and the food was mediocre at best. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Yelp
Very tasty local specialties and super service. Ask for their suggestions, since they are quite knowledgeable. My suggestion are the"coccoli" as starter and then their tagliata.

Yelp
Great food, great service! The dishes are very interesting and very tasty. We had their homemade spaghetti with buratta cream and a filet with porcini mushroom and a capponata. The waiter was very pleasant and gave good wine pairing recommendations. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the interior design is great.

Yelp
We had a wonderful lunch here after visiting the Mercato Sant'Ambrogio. The owner Federico suggested excellent dishes. I especially liked the green peppercorn risotto with crustacean bisque and tempura shrimp, which were cooked to a perfect tenderness. The wine list is superb.

Yelp
I was staying in the Piazza dei Ciompi and went looking for somplace interesting. At the Sant'Ambrogio Market is l'Ortone. Very upscale setting, nice bar and dining outside or in with multi levels. We chose to eat on the second floor by a window overlooking the street. Interior has a rustic feel with revealed stone walls. The second floor has the added benefit of the glass enclosed kitchen. You can watch the cooks prepare your meal while you savor delicious wine. We ordered Risotto, Grilled Rib steak with a balsamic reduction, and the Grilled Pork, which was a sampler of Sausage, Ribs and Chop, with a side of Tuscan beans, The food was exceptional and the service was friendly and helpful. Even though the patrons were all Italian, the waiter spoke excellent english and made us feel very comfortable. The prices are very reasonable. This place was a super find. Walking around this area on a Saturday night showed how much of a nightlife this very cool neighborhood has to offer.

Yelp
We stumbled across this tavern because it was hot and the original place we had chosen was proving difficult to find. Am I glad or what! It was one of the best meals I have had since sitting at a three hatted restaurant in our home town. We started with two pasta choices; ravioli and tortellini. They were mind blowing. We decided to order another since first course sizes weren't enough for our hungry belly. The rabbit Ragu was next level stuff. Every pasta is handmade and cooked al dente. All flavours in each pasta complimented the meal perfectly. The desert menu was extensive. We were in for a treat with the pannacotta. Four flavours come out in shot glasses which we got to share. Don't share! They are too good to share! The meal ended with a decent espresso. We will be going back!

Yelp
We had lunch here today. The pasta was amazing. We had a selection of three pastas. The rabbit Ragu is by far the best pasta I would recommend. At first I was put off by the fact it had rabbit in it. I had never tried rabbit before so we ordered the honey, pear and goats cheese ravioli and my husband ordered the tortellini with tomato and pesto. They were amazing, but being first courses they were small dishes, hence the third pasta! Thank god because we could have missed out on this close to godly dish of Ragu! The flavours of all three pastas was amazing. The creaminess of the goats cheese, the fresh homemade pesto and the rich tomato sauce on the Ragu with rosemary just hit home with each bite. We shared pannacotta for desert at the waiters recommendation. They were four shot glasses topped with different toppings (blueberry, passionfruit, strawberry and dark chocolate). They were worth it! It was made the way pannacotta should be! It was silky and smooth. Great experience with staff also. It's a must! 5/5!
