Best Restaurants and Bars in Vancouver, Washington | Eater Portland

"The Hernandez family opened this Mexico City-inspired restaurant several years ago after running a food cart in Portland. Here they serve favorites from their home town like huaraches, tlacoyo, and the Alambre, a platter of grilled Mexican sausage, carne asada, bell peppers, onions, and ham topped with melted cheese and served with warm corn tortillas. The family imported a special tortilla maker to churn out their machetes — a 10-inch quesadilla filled with things like mushrooms, cheese, huitlacoche, squash blossoms, and grilled or stewed meats. Following the trends of Mexico City, they recently added birria tacos and birria ramen to their menu." - Rachel Pinsky

Upon arriving at the restaurant, our first impression was very good: the place was impeccably clean and well-presented. The food tasted excellent; you could really tell they know how to cook. Furthermore, the person who took our order was very friendly and attentive, which made everything seem like a great experience at first. However, we had a problem with the order, and although the person serving us tried to resolve it politely, the problem arose when we reported it to the kitchen. The response from the cook (who appeared to be the manager) was completely inappropriate: he had a very rude attitude and literally said he didn't care, refusing to correct the error. This type of treatment leaves a bad taste in the mouth, especially coming from someone who seems to have an important role on the team. I think good food and initial service shouldn't be overshadowed by a poor attitude when resolving a problem. I hope they improve in that area, because they have a lot of potential.

Very good portions, very fast workers, clean interior and bathroom facilities (only one bathroom). Staff were quick and responsive. I went with my family of 11 and they moved tables for us and brought food out in less than 20 minutes. They did forgot one order of a machete and onions/jalapeños side order, but it was also their rush hour dinner time and when we reminded them they promptly brought the missing items to us. Food was exceptional, hot, and BIG! Overall, I would return to this restaurant.

Google
Absolutely fantastic. Super friendly staff. Greeted us quickly when we entered. Menu is quite large. Chips and salsa/guacamole were really good! Great selection of salsas. Being from Texas, this is easily my favorite (and most authentic) experience since moving to the PNW. Can't recommend this place enough!!

Google
A coworker told me about this place & said they had the best Tortas & Machetes! I decided to get Chips + Salsa, Birria Ramen (doesn't come with meat in it FYI), Carnitas & Pastor Tacos, Chicken Quesadilla & Plantanos Fritos! Let me tell you, very delicious all around! Staff was helpful and friendly. Nice decor & atmosphere, I'll be back for sure! So yummy!!

Google
Me and my family come here whenever we are in the area. Highly recommend the birria tacos and there agua frescas made fresh. My mother in law loves the machete. prices are decent for what you get. Salsas they have are flavorful and spicy. Highly recommended. Fast and friendly service. And very clean!

Google
Wow what a delicious meal we just had. The machete is a fun combination. Enough for one hungry adult on their own if needed. The sauces they bring out are chefs kiss! You can’t miss using them with your food, there’s a cilantro flavor (no spice), a salsa verde, a smoky salsa, and a bit more creamy spicy one we could not figure out but was delicious anyway! Tacos were on point! Their chips and salsa are clearly homemade, along with the agua fresca. All this for about $50, definitely worthy of a yummy dinner and great decor around to keep your eyes busy when they’re not closed enjoying your food 🫶 also love that you can see the kitchen where the gentlemen are cooking too!

Google
Super friendly, service was great. Food was good. Decently priced.

Yelp
I've had this place many times but realized I've never left a review, it's one of my go tos when I need something fast but delicious! They are consistent, clean and the staff is kind. I recommend the torta cubana & the specials are always different but great deals with a lot of good food they will have them displayed but I love it hereee!

Yelp
The food isn't as good as it used to be when they first opened. The menu says one price and when you pay it's another. Menu price $12 for a Suadero burrito they will ring you up $15 I brought it to their attention and the older lady was rude I think she's a manager. She's lacking in customer service sad to say. Make sure you get a receipt and pay attention to the prices

Yelp
Always enjoy this place. Whether you're trying a Machete for the first time or enjoying more traditional Mexican food options, you can't go wrong with this place.

Yelp
I am disappointed in myself for taking so long to find this spot. Was in the area past the lunch hour and was in search of a hearty meal. Yelp pointed me in this direction. Thank goodness. Owners had a food truck in Portland for 7+ years before opening this spot 4 years ago. Stepped in on a hot day and started with a Horchata to cool off. They provided chips and salsa while we waited for our dishes. The horchata and chips and salsa were tasty and I knew good things were coming our way. I ordered their special Los Alambres. It's Mexican sausage, asada, bell pepper, onions, ham, grilled, with melted cheese on top and served with corn tortillas. Delicioso. My partner inhaled every bite of his. No tasting for me. Staff was very friendly and quick to serve and the dining room is bigger than you'd expect with the location in this little strip mall. We found a new favorite spot in Vancouver.

Yelp
Great authentic food! Check it out! No alcohol served at the restaurant if that is a game changer or not..

Yelp
Discovered this place a few years ago and realized I haven't reviewed it yet. Stopped in this afternoon with my husband for some street tacos. They were good but I feel like the meat could have been seasoned more... The price went up to $3.25/taco. We usually always get the carne asada and chicken tacos. We decided to sit out front on one of the benches because it was nice out. The staff was so great. They came out and wiped the table for it and it wasn't even dirty. I think they just wanted to make sure it wasn't dusty and that it was clean for us because I'm assuming people haven't sat outside in awhile since it's been cold. The 2 waitresses brought out 4 hot sauces, water, napkins and chips and salsa. At the end of our dining, we were cleaning up and getting ready to bring everything back inside (plates, hot sauces, cups, napkins) but before we could even make it through the door, they were already coming out to take the plates and everything from us! The service was so great today!

Yelp
Food is on another level. I love me some good quality Mexican food and this is the spot! I felt like the quality reminded me of a good hole in the wall spot in Mexico. Customer services was outstanding. I highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
Such great food. Friendly staff and large area to dine. I've been here only a handful of times and everything I have eaten has been very authentic and good

Yelp
Really hate to do this, and only a few days later, but I have to keep the reviewing consistent and be fair. Just happened to be nearby and my wife suggested we get some food here again. Even before going inside, I joked that the older lady who is generally at the register didn't seem to like me the last time I'd been there, which was strange. But then after going inside and quickly looking at a menu, we stepped in line to order. After the folks ahead of us ordered, the older lady at the register couldn't get away from the register quickly enough to find someone else to take our order, while she stood there and glared at me from about three feet to the side. Again, weird but... okay? The family ahead of us got their food, ate and was on the way out the door as we sat there waiting for a fairly small order. One of the people in the family said, "Wow, you're still waiting?" before they left lol. Food was good, as usual. There didn't seem to be quite as much meat in the gorditas as there usually is, not a big issue. I was surprised by the service though. The order took forever and nobody was even close to being nice. [shrug] It's a small business, not a huge space, seems family-owned, etc. Personally I like supporting those kinds of businesses and giving them my money. But this is a situation where just being cordial and acting like you actually want my business is a really low bar to clear, and it's so odd that multiple people working in a small business like this won't clear that bar. But needless to say, if they don't want my business, no problem.

Yelp
Went for lunch on Saturday I ordered 3 Keka with steak theses were the bomb so tasty the place was packed but the food came out quickly definitely worth a trip back
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious! Good food. So authentic, feels like being in Mexico City! The machetes can be done 1/2 and 1/2 with ingredients. Tacos were great! And they have glass cokes!
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
We enjoy this authentic mexican place frequently service is fast and great. This is the most authentic place I have found in Vancouver. We go to Mexican often and while others might pride themselves for being true mexican food this is the closet you will get. They have a large seating area for those who choose to dine and with free chips and salsa. One of the waitresses bought my toddler fries one time due to how busy they were just a nice touch. They make aguas frescas of any kind for a great price my favorite is lime, cucumber and pineapple. For nights we are looking to just do pick up online is straight forward and quick.
google avatar

Nicholas S.

Yelp
Best Mexican in Vancouver. There's nothing else that comes close. Everything is super fresh and well seasoned, great service too. They have a lot of items on the menu that you can't find in other places in the state.
google avatar

Angel F.

Yelp
I met a peer here for lunch, and while waiting for her arrival, i went to sit on one of the bemches outside. As soon as i sat, the flimsy bench buckled and sent me to the ground. The owner of the business next door came out to check on me, yet no one came out from Los Alambres. I went inside told then what happened and that my knee was bleeding, they didn't seem concerned. My peer showed up, we ordered (she really wanted to come here), they finally gave me something to clean my knee and a band aid. Customer service is ALWAYS at the top of my list. On that alone- I will not be returning.
google avatar

Tom M.

Yelp
The service was very prompt and friendly...nice atmosphere and a lot of options on the menu. But the real reason for my rating...The Torta. We had the Torta Cubana and it was the very best Torta I've had in my life bar none; What's more, it was one of the best sandwiches of ANY kind I've ever had. Everything was fresh, hot and of high quality and the bread appeared to be homemade which just elevated things to another level. One of the best options in Vancouver for good quality Mexican food.
google avatar

Ivan Z.

Yelp
Service was great! Waitress was super sweet. But the food, blaaaaahh. Case and point, see images I posted. I get it. I wasn't expecting a mountain of fries. But damn. Burritos were real mushy, cause the rice was mushy. Suadero taco was bland. The chorizo was super bland. Asada had a nice saltiness but, couldn't save the food. You might like it. One star from us.
google avatar

Jaden H.

Yelp
We weren't planning on staying so we ordered it to go, but finished our meals here. We wanted to try it before we left then we kept eating it it was too good. Didn't even take a proper before photo. Food is amazing, 10/10 and the service was great! Will be ordering in next time.
google avatar

Greg F.

Yelp
Was happy with the food here. I had the machete (half steak half mushroom and cheese) and my wife had the huarache. A selection of 4 sauces were provided to the table and were necessary to add some flavor to the machete. My wife felt that the huarache was seasoned enough. This is a casual restaurant, pay first then the food is delivered to your table. Staff was friendly.
google avatar

J D.

Yelp
Love this place and love the great service! It has really fresh tortillas and amazing authentic food.
google avatar

Diane Y.

Yelp
This place is most likely the Best in Vancouver! So many things to choose! We had the soup - bean and ham and all sorts of deliciousness! We ordered the Chorizo Machetes and the Carne Al Pastor Huaraches. Soooo good! Oh my goodness! I ate almost half of my Huarache and took the rest to go. This place does not disappoint! Great and friendly service. Food came out quick too. We highly recommend this place and will definitely return!!!

Yelp
You've got to appreciate this place for what it is: one of the few places in the Portland metro area where you can get legit Mexico City style food from a normal place. A fine dining experience it is not. This place earned its five stars for me simply for being the only place that has decent chilaquiles in the region. They also get five stars for a birria that is miles better than Papi Chulo's with about 10% the hype. Oh, and if they are going to charge you $4 for an horchata, the size will at least match the price. We'll be back :)

Claudia B.

Yelp
Great food only if they can put a little bit less salt in their mushroom and cheese machete but besides that everything was delicious and great service. Everyone was very nice.

R R.

Yelp
Stopped by here for the first time. Yum yum yum! Our family shared a chorizo and chicken machete and birria tacos, all delicious! We came in at just the right time; a crowd flooded in right after we ordered and the tables were filled up. Homemade chips and salsa come with your order and all four of the sauces they have were full of flavor. I'll go back the next time I'm wanting good, authentic Mexican food.

Kerrie U.

Yelp
Oh. My. Goodness. I finally found my go-to since I am extremely picky about Mexican food quality. This checks all the boxes.
google avatar

Mariah K.

Yelp
My husband and I read about this place in an article of good eats in Vancouver and decided to give it a shot. He grew up in Woodburn around a plethora of really good Mexican spots so we've been wanting a solid go-to on our side of the state. We loved it! They're super filling and the meat is very flavorful. I had a Horchata, and it was AMAZING! Absolutely loved it. They bring you a tier of 5 different sauces to dip in to and they're ranging from no spicy flavors at all to extremely hot, whatever you prefer. I absolutely loved it and can't wait to be back!
google avatar

Trevor M.

Yelp
Great margaritas and mojitos. Such good Al Pastor!!!! And the chorizo tacos were delic as well. Everything we have tried is good
google avatar

Daniela A.

Yelp
Yum! My husband and I were looking for somewhere new to grab tacos and decided on this place after seeing they have machetes on the menu which is an oval quesadilla with two meats. Sounded amazing but I had it in my head it was a big taco for some reason so we didn't end up ordering it since it was in fact a quesadilla, and dairy is no bueno when you have a sensitivity to it. Hubs got an assortment of tacos and loved all his meats, I got chicken, al pastor, and a taco del barrio which had fries on it (yum). My favorite was the last mentioned, I loved the chorizo on it. Not too greasy, yay! The tortillas are really good and we loved all the salsas, especially the red chipotle one. We'll be back!

Elvira M.

Yelp
Excellent servers and the best Mexican food. The restaurant always is clean and neat.
google avatar

Hart G.

Yelp
Went for dinner after a friend's recommendation. It's a walk up and order at the front kind of place- they bring your food to the table. Really interesting menu with a lot of items not found at other mexican/tex-mex places in the area. Tried the torta with Carne Asada and my daughters had a black bean burrito and Carne asada tacos. Of course, I tried them all and all were excellent. Really friendly staff, short wait for the food. Only downside is no alcoholic beverages at all- not sure if those will be added later, but if you're the owner, please do!! I'm so glad this place opened close to home- I'll definitely be back.
google avatar

Patty B.

Yelp
Good authentic Mexican food in Vancouver, Washington. Im from Ca where traditional Mexican food flows through my hometown and many California communities. Their menu and the flavor of their food was very close to home. A small little restaurant who puts out big flavors. You must order the Machete, its a HUGE quesadilla.

Erick M.

Yelp
Food was good the first time which was on a Saturday. We went back since service was good and so was the food, BUT we went on a weekday this time. To our surprise the food had a completely different taste this time. It didn't have as much flavor
google avatar

Esther H.

Yelp
Food is good. I had carnitas, we brought half of our food home. Generous portions. Mexican coke is delicious! We will go back. Lots on the menu I'd like to try. We met our kids and grandkids. Always a treat.
google avatar

Favian R.

Yelp
Food is always quality never switch up or bad tasting food always come here to eat when I'm working in the area Highly recommend

Jaynie R.

Yelp
Awesome food! Truly delicious! Wonderful staff This is our new go-to favourite Mexican restaurant!
google avatar

Casandra D.

Yelp
Always has delicious authentic food! One of the best Mexican places in Vancouver! Everything I've tried there is good!
google avatar

William F.

Yelp
This place is the shiiiiiiznittle! I like my burritos super basic. Beans. Rice. cheese. That's it. You'd be surprised how hard it is for places to make that simple combo into a great burrito but this place does it so well! I do ask for easy cheese because they tend to be a little heavy handed on the cheese for me. Their sides are also great. Their quesadilla comes with a side of steak fries that are awesome and their habanero hot sauce is the best I've tried in a long time! I definitely recommend this place!
google avatar

Carlene J.

Yelp
Place is very clean fast service .. but just not my kinda of favor ... kinda high price
google avatar

Julie M.

Yelp
Absolutely the best authentic Mexican food! Food portions and taste is amazing! Although this place is small in size, it is well worth the visit!

Nora A.

Yelp
Best torta I've had in my life. Everything about it was great. Even the bread was just lovely. I'm not even home from eating there but I wanted to make sure I left a review. I'm so happy in my car right now because we found this place and it's not far from home.
google avatar

Luis C.

Yelp
Best Mexican authentic food in Vancouver! I grew up in Mexico City and believe me I know about DF food! And this place nailed it! Just like eating in CDMX , great quality food, condiments, salsas, and outstanding customer services, I am here only working for 4 months but I am glad someone recommended me this place! I will for sure come back every week to eat here ! If you are looking for Mexican authentic food look no more this is the real thing! I will try the whole menu before I go back home to Vegas ! Thanks to this family owned restaurant because for once you find Mexico City food that is as close as it gets. Keep up the good work guys!!! See you soon.
google avatar

Kevin T.

Yelp
I'm not gonna spend a lot of time going on and on about why this is the best place in town to get mexican food. Just trust me.... THIS IS THE BEST PLACE IN TOWN TO GET MEXICAN FOOD !!!! Los Alambres is #1. These guys are serious about what they do. I do not know how many times I've been here. I couldn't tell you... But everytime I go is solid. They've never had an off day. Solid.
google avatar

Anna I.

Yelp
I got the vegetarian tacos ( loaded up on the salsa ). Very happy they have some vegetarian options but wish they had more. They have lots of options for a variety of tacos and traditional Mexican dishes. If you're a meat lover, you won't be disappointed. I'm shocked I've never heard of this place before. Kind of hidden away. Their home made salsas are gonna have me coming back for more. The habanero salsa has some heat to it! They kept busy while we dined in, social distancing was enforced by closed off tables. Staff are super friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Jackie A.

Yelp
My boyfriend had been coming here for 3 years and was excited for me to try it. It did not disappoint! The burritos and salsas were delicious and I see why he's been going for so long. This place definitely satisfied my craving for good Mexican food.
google avatar

Michael A.

Yelp
This place is the REAL DEAL - authentic and unique dishes from Mexico City (also known as DF - Distrito Federal). We tried three tacos: al Pastor, Taco del Barrio, and Compechano). All were delicious, with a generous serving size and well-presented. But the star of the show was owner and chef Miguel's especialidad: the Alambra. This is top sirloin mixed with bacon, onion, green and red bell peppers, all topped with melted cheese. Served with a stack of warmed tortillas, this is a favorite in Mexico City. Very friendly service with Miguel himself coming out to ask us how we liked his creations. We will definitely be back to explore the menu further!
google avatar

Richard M.

Yelp
Muy sabroso! We spend lots of time in Mexico and this place is legit! We'll be back to try something different with every visit.Campechano
google avatar

Kai V.

Yelp
Best torta ive had since moving to Portland. So much flavor i didnt add salsa. Been wanting to try it since finding it on yelp. I ordered the Gringo. Al pastor, pinapple and cheese such a good combination of sweet and savory.
google avatar

Norma D.

Yelp
No se porque se llama los alambres , solo tacos pero no son Buenos quitan el hambre peto no invitan a regresar
google avatar

Peter T.

Yelp
The special tacos were delicious! My wife had the machete (essentially a quesadilla) with two different meats and they gladly split it in half for her. The staff was very friendly. They did one of the best things in my eyes, when I asked for a recommendation of what to eat, they gave me a specific item on the menu and a specific type of meat to try. There flavored waters were good, I would recommend the strawberry over the jamaica flavor. I wish I lived closer so I could try more things on the menu.
