The Best Picnic Spots In LA

"Pick-Up Food Options: Moo's Craft BBQ, Flouring Cake Shop, Wax Paper Open since 2017, LA State Historic Park is one of the city’s newer parks and also one of its best. With over 32 acres, this Chinatown-adjacent park boasts an orange grove, event spaces, unobstructed views of the Downtown skyline, and massive tracts of grass perfect for picnics. With the heart of Chinatown only a few blocks away, you have countless pick-up meal options, but we love Wax Paper’s sandwiches, dessert from Flouring Cake Shop, and the best BBQ in LA from Moo's. Google
This is a wonderful city park that boasts the best city views. The people and pets are the friendliest and nicest here. Kudos to the park staff and security that keep this park SAFE and clean all day long. Whether you want to just sit & enjoy the view or are there to get your steps in jogging - this park is the best !

Google
Started coming here to fly kites not too long ago. The winds here are very sporadic. But when they are good. Its good. Great open space to fly. Very spacious. The park closes when the sun sets. Also you have to pay for parking if you're in the lot.

Google
Nice park to take your dog for a walk. Lots of active people which is energizing to see.

Google
Great park lot of space. Good areas for picnic.

Google
Beautiful green space in a concrete jungle. Residents need to use it in appreciation for the hard work people put in to preserve this place. It's awesome. But the transients take up the public restrooms, so that was uncomfortable.

Riverside Green Park is not just a space for relaxation; it also serves as a vibrant community hub. Throughout the year, the park hosts a range of events, including outdoor concerts, farmers' markets, and seasonal festivals. These gatherings create a sense of community and provide an opportunity for residents to connect and celebrate together. Riverside Green Park is equipped with a variety of facilities that cater to different interests. There are well-maintained walking and jogging trails that meander through the park, perfect for fitness enthusiasts. The children's playground is a highlight, featuring modern equipment and ample space for kids to play safely. @theveganvegeta

Google
I visited LA State Historic Park today and was pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable the experience was. The park is exceptionally clean, with plenty of open space, making it ideal for walking, jogging, or simply relaxing. It was refreshing to explore a park that wasn’t overcrowded, creating a peaceful and laid-back atmosphere. What stood out most was how well-maintained the park felt, which made it a great spot to walk my dog. The pathways are spacious, allowing for easy movement without feeling cramped. It’s also surrounded by a variety of charming restaurants and cafés, perfect for grabbing a bite or coffee after a stroll. The park feels very safe, and its location next to Chinatown adds extra convenience and character, giving visitors easy access to some of LA’s most vibrant spots. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, LA State Historic Park offers a great blend of nature, space, and accessibility. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Google
The perfect spot to chill when you need a minute. Only a handful of parking spots are shaded. Hardly any homeless so, it's safe if you've got kids. Restrooms are decent for public park restrooms. Honestly, it's gotta be up there as one of the best parks in LA.

Yelp
Zedd in the park? No Dom Dolla in the park baby, and it was so fun. Upon Ubering here, you see thousands of people walking to the entrance across from the brewery, so you know where to go! Unfortunately, there is no designated parking here, which makes me sad. Imagine after the event, everyone is just walking in the closed-off street to Uber or find a ride. For Daytrip in the park, the sound was great, and there were fences around the area, so it was a bit tight inside. The decor was groovy and gave off disco vibes, and it felt like you were in a jungle with vines coming from the shade cover. As for Dom Dolla, security was smooth and ID check, we went straight in, and there were blow-up decorations for photo opportunities, like a bigass spaceship. Right next to it was the merchandise tent where ALL THE GOOD MERCH WAS SOLD OUT! I was so sad but still managed to get something good. There were plenty of porta potties and vendors to grab drinks. The stage was so big, and the screen graphics behind the artists were trippy. The security at the VIP area was so bad. They let hella people hop the fence into VIP and were dancing so much, haha. Overall, it was a great set, and I, Dom Dolla and Tove Lo, made the rest of my year. Welcome to LA Dom :)

Yelp
amazing park, wish there weren't so many damn concerts held here. Get your damn Electric Daisy Dump Worthless Concert away from one of the few parks in this area that people deserve and have a right to experience without your partying/concert trash. I'm not saying locals only but i am saying hoochies should not come here. This park is for walking dogs, famies, jogging, sight seeing, and old people to enjoy. Also this park is literally historic - pay some respect concert goers. Get the hell outta here. Keep it introvert.

Yelp
12/15/2018 I didn't come here for the 5K running event but I came here for the food that is accompanying the 5K event. I ran to eat, I ran to feed. Let's be honest here, I didn't run at all. I just wanted to eat. Just a few food options with lots of Filipino flair. Paella Paella had some good paella. Heavenly Signature Ice Cream came from the Bay area just for this event. We tried the Buko Pandan Young Coconut ice cream. It was really good as ice cream but I don't think I am a fan of pandan in general. Silog sisig fries is like chili fries but so much more in a different way. Sisig Nachos at Nova's Grill booth is a great snack to have after a run. There are many other events held here at this park. Even before it was remodeled. Yelp invited me to an outdoor cinema a few times with food trucks to feed us all. There have been concerts, carnivals, many other types of events. It is a large grass area enough to run around in. There is a main building that has a few restrooms similar to the rest stops on a road trip. Once an event has ended, the restrooms would be locked and unavailable. Which totally sucks when you have to pee. I guess this building and the nice looking bridge across the park is the new part of the renovation.

Yelp
Dom Dolla ate and left no crumbs. LA Historic Park is fully outdoors in downtown LA. This venue is as raw as it gets, so it's tuly up to the artist/promoter to bring it to life. The biggest downer is that there is no venue parking, so it's truly every man for themselves. I highly (emphasis on highly) recommend rideshare. We Uber'd all the way from Huntington Beach and it was well worth the cost to watch this man/god perform live. The venue was well kept, grassy, with a ton of areas for sitting/mingling. Unfortunately there's no built in bathrooms onsite, but they make it up for it with about two hundred porta potties. The venue is also pretty relax when it comes to security. We were able to bring in camelbaks, backpacks, and even a full water bottle. EDM is so therapeutic and no one is a better therapist than Dom. Over 40k people mobbing to Rhyme Dust will forever be a core memory.

Yelp
This a great park with plenty of beautiful trees, plants, and amazing landscaping. It nuzzled near Dodger Stadium and Chinatown, and is a great addition to the DTLA scenery. Me and my dog enjoyed the trails and walking over the bridge. The park is well maintained and restroom were very clean, we'll definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
V convenient site near Chinatown for events like Lost in Dreams and Dom Dolla. There is limited onsite parking and limited street parking, so Uber or parking in an offsite lot are the best options. Also love that vendors often come to hand out samples and drinks in the area!

Yelp
Hidden gem park of my heart! Lush greenery, spacious pathways, entrances, a Roundhouse Bridge and shady spots for picnics, paw pals and everyone. I knew of LA State Historic Park, but don't believe I'd ever been let alone experienced it until the month of June. A quick skip or so from the LA Metro Chinatown Station makes for an even more convenient destination as well as easier way to avoid parking. Across from staples like Highland Park Brewery off Spring St/Elmyra St and near some fun shops and local eateries. This amazing spacious park recently hosted the 2024 LA Pride festival on Saturday with Ricky Martin closing it all out. A few good food vendors off the light brown dirt trails and not to far from the wooden bridge. See concerts, attend events and enjoy the park magic of LASHP!

Yelp
I attended a Zedd event here. Street parking in the area is easy to find. The venue itself is quite open, with mostly grass and a few food pop-ups. It can get dusty at night, so I recommend staying hydrated and bringing a mask to help with the air quality. The surrounding area feels unsafe after dark, so be cautious .

Yelp
This is a large green space covering 32 acres north of Chinatown and roughly southeast of Dodger Stadium. I think it's a nice retreat in an otherwise urban setting. There are multiple walkways and extensive lawns. It's a nice place for a picnic lunch. A short walk north of the park is the historic Flat Iron Building, the second oldest industrial building standing in Los Angeles dating from 1890. The Metro A (Blue) line Chinatown stop is at the southern end of the park. It's about a 20 minute walk from Union Station. There are restrooms and parking.

Yelp
Does Los Angeles State Historic Park allow dogs? Yes, it is a very dog friendly park. Dogs must be on leash at all times. Los Angeles State Historic Park is one of our favorite state parks to visit. There are public restroom stalls that are kept fairly clean. Picnic tables are spread out throughout the park. There is a small paid lot (we use the Yodel app to pay, but you can pay at the park as well). You can also find street parking. My reason for docking off one star is the frequent presence of off-leash dogs in the park. I think the park could improve enforcement of on-leash rules due to safety reasons. We've encountered situations where unattended off-leash dogs approached us and our pup, posing potential risks. Recently, however, we've been seeing more and more state park rangers patrolling the park, reminding visitors to keep their dogs on a leash. We consistently check the park events calendar before our visits. Unfortunately, large events are often hosted, restricting the park's accessibility for regular visitors.

Yelp
Los Angeles State Historic Park is a fantastic spot! It offers a peaceful escape from the city with beautiful green spaces and scenic views. Perfect for picnics, walks, and just relaxing. The park is well-maintained and has a rich history that adds to its charm. Highly recommend visiting!

Yelp
I know this sounds silly to say, but this park holds so many cherished memories for me. I used to come here once a month to walk my little chewy before he passed from cancer. We'd spend at least an hour here just walking around the entire park. Sometimes we'd bring my mom and my aunt with us and have a family picnic. I still go here once in a while. It's changed a lot through the years but it's still the grounds we walked together.

Yelp
The Bob Barker Event was a success! My beautiful nieces had a blast watching Rene's marionette's show even my lil Princess Warrior Xena enjoyed every bit of it. #socalweather

Yelp
This park is beautiful and clean! They have a wide field of grass and shade perfect all day. I recently went for an afternoon picnic and it was very peaceful watching the Gold Line train go to and from LA Many locals come to walk leisurely, run, and exercise their pets. The entire park does a loop about 1.5 miles long. If you get hungry, stop by the snack shack by the front entrance. They offer an extensive menu filled with a variety of food & drinks despite being a small shack really surprising! The other time I had been to this park was for a concert hosted by LA3C - Capital of Creativity & Culture. They had performers like Lil Baby, Snoop Dogg, Seventeen, and Mustard! It was an amazing venue with ample space I would highly recommend. The only downside is there's hardly any parking during busy times, if you're lucky street parking is possible. I'd recommend parking in Chinatown and walking over or park at Union Station. Once at Union Station, take a quick ride on the Gold Line and arrive at Chinatown (1 stop away from Union Station) head down the stairs and you'll walk right into the park it's super convenient. The next event I'm excited to attend occurs every Thursday the LA River Farmers Market sets up from 3pm-7pm. https://lastatehistoricpark.org/events/ The website calendar will show many other events hosted there weekly an amazing way to bring the community together.

Yelp
Literally one of my favorite parks to go to. I do videography and photography and this location is really great for creatives to utilize. It's very big, huge in fact. Tons of space, nice green grass, very well kept, with a pretty cool looking winding bridge in the middle of it. They also have events from time to time at this park like concerts, etc.. they also have a farmers market every Thursday. Overall a great place to check out, have a picnic, or take a nice walk through the park.
google avatar

Yelp
This park is one of my favorites for a walk with a stunning view of downtown. It occasionally closes for private events on weekends, but the trail is enjoyable at just over a mile. People love having picnics and spending quality time with their friends and family here. Dogs are a common sight, and if you're hungry, Cargo Snacks offers burgers, fries, and more.

Yelp
This is a lovely place to just come and chill. Enjoy the weather, hang out with friends and family, and make some kandi bracelets with the beautiful rave community! That is what we did on Sunday, July 2nd and it was an amazing day! Two different families joined us throughout the day to make their own and I'm so happy that they enjoyed it! PLUR is very much alive.

Yelp
Beautiful park! Perfect for flying a kite. I've had several picnics here and have even attended a Cinespia event here. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. Plenty of clean bathroom facilities. The hardest park is parking.
google avatar

Graciela C.

Yelp
PARKING: $4 for 2hrs at the pay station. Must leave paper in windshield. I discovered free parking just accross the street but would park at your own risk since there's a few homeless campers. No stopping not the same as No parking. Double check the signs. First time here and looks like a nice medium sized urban park (like the ones they build in the middle of the city just to bring a little green to a lot of concrete). Came for the free compost class CLEANLA. You can Google this. It was extremely useful and entertaining. They also sell compost bins at a discount after the class. $40 for regular and $65 for worm compost. They also have free seeds for various vegetables (cucumbers, basil, tomatoes, lettuce, etc) All in all decent park extremely close to Chinatown. Would walk here after a meal or the like.

Yelp
Went to this park to see the chainsmokers perform with other acts recently, I was impressed that the park and venue looked clean and well organized. Overall, it was a good show and would return to this location.
google avatar

Yelp
I visited here a few months ago for a music festival, and my has it changed since 2013! Almost 10 years ago the park was all dirt with nothing to really offer. Now it's a beautifully landscaped park with lots of open space and even a high line bridge. It's in the heart of LA touching Chinatown. There's grass, trees with some shade, and then some molded hills that can take you higher to street level when access is granted. It's an easily accessed park with a snack shack as well near the entrance. Highlight: view of the DTLA skyline!
google avatar

Rachel T.

Yelp
This is my favorite park in all of Los Angeles! I discovered this park several years ago when I was on the hunt for the *perfect park* to spend time with my new pup, and we have been frequenting LA Historic ever since. There is a stunning view of the downtown LA skyline that's extra beautiful during golden hour. The park is ENORMOUS (a whopping 32 acres!) and it's always packed with people, but you can easily find a space for you/your group. There are folks having picnics, playing sports, playing with their dogs, or just basking in the sun! There is also a walking trail that loops around the park. Note - Dogs are technically supposed to be on leash, but many folks let their dogs roam free. You can often find groups of pups playing together! I love that the park is extremely clean (which is surprising, given how much traffic this park gets). The public bathrooms are surprisingly clean as well. There's a mid-sized parking lot attached to the park, but it gets full very quickly. I've often resorted to street parking, and that has never been a problem for me. LA Historic is also the venue for a variety of events, from concerts to food extravaganzas. A must visit for Los Angeles!
google avatar

Yelp
Omg such a little gem in DTLA! LA state historical park is a nice park with plenty of space; and I have to say, I really LOVE this location. It's not just spacious, the view is really good too. You get to see Dodger stadium and the skyline of DTLA. The sunset views over DTLA were truly beautiful! It's also a great place for friends, families and doggies. Yes, doggie friendly! Bonus points: they just renovated in 2017, so everything looks pretty new. There's a paid parking. I think they charge $15, and if you pay beforehand on the website, I think it's $10. Side note: There are 2 food and beverage options nearby; one is Cargo snack shack (it's in the park) and another brewery called Highland park (across the street) All walkable!
google avatar

Teresa A.

Yelp
I went to Los Angeles State Historic Park today for the first time ever to attend the Bob Baker Day event. The event was great. I thought the park was nice. On-site parking is limited, but there is nearby street parking. I would consider attending another event at the park.
google avatar

Dan L.

Yelp
This park is complete garbage. There is simply nothing to do except walking your dog out and running. When they have events they close everything and don't even let you use the restroom. Unprofessional security might yelled from the distance in a rude manner
google avatar

Mae M.

Yelp
Clean and nice park! Came here for an EDM concert on my bday with a group of friends and had a great time. While it was dark when we were there I was surprised by how open/spacious and clean everything was. Due to the noise rules they have, any concerts here will end promptly at 11pm. I am looking forward to coming back during the day when the sun is out to explore around too. :)

Karli D.

Yelp
Such a gorgeous park. For kids, grandparents, dogs and everything in between. Everyone who comes here leaves happy. There are also sometimes concerts and movies that play here. Such a gem in LA! Truly one of the most beautiful parks I have ever seen
google avatar

Noodles And Basil N.

Yelp
Mom took us here with our late brother chewy lots of times. We've seen the park change so much through the years. Before it was just an empty dusty lot but now it's evolved into what we like to think is our little safe place for us to roam around and smell the fresh grass. Coming here reminds us a lot of our brother, so we still come about once a month to walk in his old footsteps.
google avatar

Nica L.

Yelp
Came here to watch the Primavera Sound music festival. The grounds are five stars pretty with nice clean walking paths and awesome spaces to picnic in. The primavera layout sucked, I didn't like how they said it was all ages and proceeded to lock all the genz kids-- who really had more right to be there because several of the musicians playing were genz themselves-- out of the best views. So sad to see kids clamoring to get a glimpse of Clairo from behind a stupid fence while millennials, xers & boomers were sitting, bored with a great view of the stage. Anyway. For a park, this place is gorgeous. Go Check it out!
google avatar

Sarah P.

Yelp
LOVE this park!!!! It really is an unexpected little gem in DTLA. Its located in a pretty industrial area, which is interesting, but I appreciate having this green space that is so easy to get to from my apartment when I need a break. I come here a few times a week to get my steps in, there are lots of nice paths to walk on within this park. There is also lots of green space for sports/dogs/picnics/etc. The park is super clean, well-maintained, and safe, and you even get a nice view of the DLTA skyline. There are bathrooms available as well as fountains to fill up your water bottle. It gets little busy on the weekends, but on the weekdays its typically very quiet and serene. I would appreciate if the parking lot was free, but its only ~$2/hour and there is some street parking nearby if you're able to find an empty spot.
google avatar

Jee H.

Yelp
Visit with my kids and friends. It was quite sunny day and kids were having fun but missed playground. I wish there is playground for kids.
google avatar

Kuo C.

Yelp
It's nice to have a big green field near DTLA that even people living in the condos and apartments west of Chinatown can still drive just a few miles over. I enjoy walking around the entire park, it's nicely landscaped, even though it's not big, two rounds can still be a good workout. Some suggestions: 1. The Welcome Center is not ready, peeking at the interior shows a mess of furniture and stuff. 2. There is no pamphlets for visitors to know about the background of the park, maybe there is a information sigh for that somewhere, but I only saw two board of map. 3. The description on some of the information pointers on the path side is fading, hard to read, and lack of attractive design. 4. Parking space is not really abundant, not sure it can accommodate a large event. But there is a big unpaved ground right outside park fence, not sure parking is allowed.
google avatar

Regis K.

Yelp
After reading the reviews of our fellow Yelpers about this park, we have been wanting to come and take some pictures of the sunset of downtown LA. On Boxing Day ( a Canadian Holiday) we went to Highland Park Brewery in China Town and accidentally discovered this hidden gem which is right across from the brewery. We were so glad that we got there before the sunset as park would have closed at sunset. It looked like a lot of of families came out with their children and dogs to enjoy outdoor activities. Although it's located in DTLA, the park is vast. There is plenty of grass areas for children to run around and the dogs to catch their frisbees. At sunset time, there is a hill and a bridge where you can have a clear view of DTLA sunset. I snapped some photos of the sunset. It was nice to be out in the open.

Yelp
Loved the park fun to be around Alhumdhulillah god bless America n the earth nature do relaxing great breezy park

Yelp
It is a great place to hang out, having picnic, exercising especially during pandemic. The park is located in Chinatown town, next to the subway station (the Gold line). There are plenty free street parking or paid parking inside of the park. The park is very well kept and manicured. The a hidden gem in the city. It is opened from 8 AM to sunset. It is about 1.2 mile round trip. There are plenty open spaces for kids and pets running and playing. The view of skyline of downtown is awesome especially at sunset. There are portable bathroom and water station at the visitor center where also is pay station. Before the pandemic, they have movie night, food truck on weekends. Hopefully, these will come back in future.
google avatar

Brian I.

Yelp
I have only been to watch movies like most recently by Cinespia. It's a little walk by Public Transportation at the Chinatown station, and the train passes by the park. It's nice to see DTLA from the park. It's difficult to park and get out during events, but it is otherwise fine.
google avatar

AJ B.

Yelp
Love this park! Attended Smokin Grooves festival and has an amazing time. What a beautiful landscape and time I would love to visit when there isn't a festival. Everything was beautifully hosted especially in vip! I enjoyed my day here

Gilbert G.

Yelp
Great park in the City! Beautiful and natural park with great supervision by park rangers. Very clean and much nicer now that enough time has allowed the trees to grow and provide natural shade. The park will even be better once they get the funds to connect the park to Broadway via the Roundhouse Bridge.
google avatar

Ted C.

Yelp
I don't know what the park is like when people are out and about but when I stopped by there was plenty of street parking as well as in their parking lot. The park had a nice green field for picnicking, there was a little track for running and a nice grove of trees. Especially now during COVID there's so much space for everyone to work out/walk/lay out/run. It's nice to know there's a park like this in the city that's spread out and easy to walk.
google avatar

Jo S.

Yelp
I have a sore spot for parks in my heart and they're so necessary for allowing us to spend time in nature. I discovered the new-ish LA State Historic Park while attended a cultural event inside. It hosts concerts, music screenings, so that's pretty cool. The park is in Chinatown, the subway passes by, so it's in the middle of the city, as urban as it gets. The background is cool, can see the familiar downtown buildings from afar, City Hall included. Because it's newer it lacks some shade and it can have more seating options. It's not big, but I'm glad that it's there. It can be improved for sure, but I'm glad that it's there. Every time somebody creates a park in the city should be praised. We need more greenery where we can relax, enjoy nature, kids can play. The city cuts too many trees already, so a new park gets a great score in my book. Check it out next time while you're in the area and feel like the city gets to you. A break while enjoying nature might be what you need!

Yelp
LOVEEEE this park near Chinatown which they beautifully landscaped a couple of years ago. It reminds me of a golf course because of the vast size and expansive greenery. I love the surrounding industrial aesthetic which reminds of New York's high line. They have lots of community events here like music festivals, farmer's market, art and yoga classes, roller skating, campfires, mental health workshops, etc. Great spot to catch the sunset and a view of the DTLA skyline at the bridge. Such a wonderful little gem in LA. Paid parking but there's plenty of free street parking .
google avatar

Zach H.

Yelp
Stunning park with great views of the LA skyline. Lots of room and grass to frolic around in. It's big enough that there's concerts and festivals here. Free parking in the area just watch street signs (obvi).
google avatar

Yelp
Great place. Very calm. Great for a picnic with friends or family. No BBQ though. I like flying my kite there. There is parking, but it's not of spaces. So it can be packed during a specific hour. You do have to pay for parking. It's about 2.35$ and hour I believe. 8.35$ for the whole day.

Yelp
Before the State Park was developed, it was a dilapidating part of the former railroad yard of Southern Pacific, Union Pacific, and others. Cargo of different commerce moved through the area 24/7. My memory serves me to the 70's when that part of Alameda was also filled with food plants ie. Carnation, Dolly Madison. The area remained abandoned for years. Until the land was purchased by the state and developed into what is now the Los Angeles State Historic Park. It is a gem of a space to relax, picnic, jog, walk, do Yoga, attend events, or just be. It is VERY doggie friendly. The Park is set in the Chinatown neighborhood; and, surrounded by Elysian Park, Downtown LA in the distance, the metro line, Nick's Cafe, a brewery. Right now in the works is an eatery and brew house to be on park property. The hours of the Park are from dusk to dawn. State park police is located on park property and are available during park hours. It is truly a safe place to enjoy. Unfortunately I have no pics of the prior. Only my memory. Google archives for the area to see the metamorphic process that occurred. It's a park definitely worth stopping at. The history that surrounds it is amazing. The views of the downtown skyline is fantastic! What a great development by the State for all to visit and enjoy. Visit! ;D

Yelp
What kind of PUBLIC park is entirely closed to the public even for a day? Tried to come here with my girlfriend to picnic about 2.5 weeks ago and couldn't even get in. The entire park was closed for some psychedelic yoga rave. It looks like a beautiful, big green space that benefits our community. Just wish we got to be in/use it. If there's going to be an event, at least allocate SOME space for people to enjoy the public space that's meant for the community.

Yelp
Visited here a week ago for a music festival. Do much fun. Lots of open space to walk around and eat and enjoy the shows. I loved it. I can't wait to come back for another show. We'll done ! We'll done!

Yelp
We take our dog here and it's always clean and beautiful. He always has a good time and we do to. It's one of the only parks I've been to in LA that actually have restrooms open to the public. There are also stations to clean your hands and water fountains. I never worry about him. Swallowing plastic or anything else on his runs here.

Yelp
I've been here before the renovation but wow it looks amazing and clean. There is plenty of space, lots of green grass. There are on site sculptures to check out. Great to see programming with dance companies and inclusive events. I saw a sign posted about yoga (bilingual and English) though it may be on hold. This is a great place for a picnic and there are restrooms available. Parking is $2 dollars on site or there is street parking.
