When I first moved to Houston I was on the hunt for authentic tamales. I tried several restaurants in the Greater Houston area and was fortunate to find this little hole in the wall, Los Cocos Restaurant. I came in with my family on a Thursday afternoon and was immediately greeted by a friendly hostess, which was very welcoming, but we were sad to see we missed karaoke as it's only on Friday and Saturday nights. For drinks, they have your standard soft drink selection, tea, water, orange juice, and even Mexican Coca-Cola. Then there's also beer or if you're wanting something with a kick, an old-fashioned margarita. After ordering our drinks we started looking at the menu which is written in both English and Spanish. The chips were brought with our drinks and while I am usually very picky about salsa, their chips and salsa knocked it out of the park. Their guacamole is made fresh on-site and they serve a complimentary soup with the chips and salsa which is delicious. Los Cocos is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so the menu is packed with a variety of options. From a nacho appetizer to homemade cheesecake for dessert. Even if you have members in your group that aren't in the mood for or can't eat Mexican, they also have burgers and pasta on the menu. Los Cocos has everything. Even a whole fried fish which the kids got a kick out of. I ordered the tamales and was impressed with how fast our food was brought out. They were the best I've ever had stateside. They had the perfect amount of spice and flavor. I could not have been more pleased. The quality of service I received was unparalleled. Our waitress was attentive, funny, and overall, amazing. The quality and price of the food left me astounded. They offer catering for special occasions and events, which I will be looking further into for the holidays. I have no interest in continuing my hunt for quality authentic Mexican food, everything was spot on. If you find yourself in Southwest Houston, whether it be morning, noon, or night, stop by Los Cocos Restaurant.
