Where to Find the Best Fish Tacos in San Diego

"Founded by a father-and-son team hailing from Sinaloa — Mexico’s seafood capital — the staff at Los Cuates knows a thing or two about what goes into a stellar fish taco. Specials and lunch plates offer a good chance to sample some of the house tacos along with a small bowl of fresh ceviche. The taco perron, a cheesy taco topped with smoked marlin and spicy shrimp, is a must." - Candice Woo, Mario A. Cortez

Google
I absolutely loooove the tacos here. Unexpected! They have a great deal for tacos on Tuesdays. I went back the next day and bought more tacos to share w family I loved it so much. And those family members went back the next day. Food was just as good to go. I loved our server. So chill and helpful. Great place for a drink and delicious seafood. New menu. Place is small but as of this writing they still had outdoor seating. I think this is sadly changing. Inside is small. Music loud but not so loud you can't converse over a leisurely meal. To go is QUICK!

Google
Mannn if you love Mariscos you got to come here ! Me and my buddies came here to watch the game, they have a full bar and TVs everywhere ! I got fish tacos and put some sauces on it was so good ! Also got the camaron rockas with chipotle sauce on top it was my favorite. My buddy got the stuffed potatoes stuffed with shrimp and carne asada, I had a bite ! My friend loved it and he also had the shrimp guayow which I had a shrimp and it was also amazing ! Server was great they explained the menu to us ! Definitely coming back here !

Google
1st time here. You have to try the calamari… delicious! We had fish tacos and I can tell you the fish was fresh and tasty! A must when in So. Bay.

Google
Freshly made fried (white sea bass) fish tacos. A tender and good sized portion of fish. One of the best in the area if not the best. Service was quick. The atmosphere felt a little empty for an early Friday evening.

Google
I visited this place in the morning just to have coffee and get to know it, the service was a little slow, maybe because it was their opening day! They have a great variety of LP records at a good price!

Google
Very good food i had a taco perron didn't expect it to be so delicious. I liked that they also have a kids menu my son enjoyed the birria tacos , there was a wait time of about 15 min because the place is kinda small but it was totally worth ,price wise very affordable I paid about $65 for 3 people I take one start off for service not because it's bad but because I think they need more personal serving tables Overall I will come back to this restaurants I totally recommend it

Google
I was kind a disappointed with the service and the food wasn't that good. The only reason I give it 3 stars was because the michelada was really good, they had a neat salsa bar for you to get what you needed for your food and the place was kind a nice. The ceviche has too much clamato or tomato paste. You really couldn't taste the seafood or the broth of the seafood. The tostada mixta was a little better tasting than the shrimp ceviche. I also had 2 tacos de vapor that was disappointing. Very little meat. The taco de pescado was not so good. The breading around the fish meat was thin and not much flavor. Usually the fried breading around the fish is thick and has a lot of flavor. The place is a cool place to sit and hangout with not so loud music. The food was not so good and the service could of been better. Also the server got our order wrong and still charged us full price when it was her fault. I hope next time I decide to come in that they check on me if I need more water, beer, or napkins. First time I feel I have given 3 stars.

Google
Had the 3 potatoes with shrimp different styles. Fresh salsas and chips while you wait for the order. The patio area is comfy. Pet friendly big plus guys. Staf was friendly and helpful. If you don't want to pay for a $5 taco couple doors down than this is perfect. Good food and reasonable pricing. Chula Vista Village great for casual dining and not breaking the wallet. Definitely recommend Mariscos Los Cuates

Yelp
The Corona brothers know exactly what they are doing! I came in while visiting the area for work and it was an easy decision to come in considering the number and quality of reviews. They were very engaging and welcoming, and the food was top notch. Their endearing story about taking their father's business and adding their stamp and flavor was enough to make me a returning customer. Great food, fantastic service, and a damn good Michelada.
google avatar

Yelp
A Mexican seafood spot like no other. Owned by twin brothers hence the name. It's a great place to eat some of the most not typical Mexican food. Not scared to add new menu items. The place now boasts a breakfast menu. Besides the delicious food. Customer service is great. To dine isn't crazy expensive. The dining area is not large but spacious with big TV's lining the walls. They have weekly specials plus live music on Fridays and Saturday. Support local business especially the good ones. . Los Cuates is awesome.

Yelp
We came here at 11:40 AM since Yelp had 11:30 as the opening time, but it was closed. We walked around the area and as we were about to leave we saw people walk in this was around 12:20. We looked up their Instagram and saw they advertised 10 am as their opening time for a Saturday. We walked in and the gentleman working said we could sit anywhere we wanted. After some time we realized he was the only one working until almost 1or so. They seemed to be out of a few items based on what we tried ordering and what the table behind us tried ordering. We opted to order: the cucaracha shrimp, a surf and turf taco, shrimp taco and a shrimp with octopus (this one tasted too fishy) and an asada baked potato. The gentleman comes back and tells us that he's out of the baked potatoes, but a few minutes later comes back and says he only has half of one. That he would start working on it and if I would like to order something else. Which I ended up adding a birria taco. The cucaracha shrimp tasted amazing and definitely worth the price. The chips and salsa were delicious as well. The other items were okay a bit over priced for the portions and taste. They had reggaetón music blasting the entire time. When we were going to pay the twin of the gentleman who was helping us the entire time brought our check and said we were getting 10% off the baked potato because it was on the smaller side. Which left us super confused because we were told he only had half a potato left when we had initially placed our order. Not sure if they were understaffed but it's definitely not a good idea to have one person operating the front and back of the house on a Saturday. A suggestion would be to make note of items that aren't available or bad (we were told the horchata was bad after we ordered it) prior to opening so they can be 86, which will avoid having customers going back to the menu a few times. This place has a lot of potential but it seems they are taking some shortcuts to makeup for the lack of staffing which is compromising the food quality.

Yelp
Enjoyed dinner at Los Cuates Seafood and Bar Restaurant located on 3rd Avenue in Chula Vista, CA. The Cuates Loaded Baked Potato with adobada & shrimp was EXCELLENT a 5/5 a must try!! You can also order with carne asada if you'd like. We also enjoyed the adobada & surf & turf tacos 5/5. We added the Sea Basket with French fries special and give it a 3/5. The seafood was fresh, but the batter needed a bit more seasoning and the French fries were greasy and soggy. The service was excellent!! Our waitress was so nice and attentive. We definitely would go back for the loaded baked potato and the tacos..So delicious!! They have All You Can Eat & Drink special for $45.00 on Thursdays that includes; Tacos, some seafood like ceviche and agua chile. Going back to try that!! I posted a photo of that menu. There's indoor and outdoor seating with street parking. Check it out! Happy Yelping :)

Yelp
Hey there! I just had to share this with you - I recently tried some of the best Mexican seafood I've ever had at Los Cuates. This is my second review, and I have to say, I've been amazed again. Los Cuates is truly special and a must-visit spot when you come down to Chula Vista 3rd Avenue. This just keeps getting better. Can't wait for you to try it out too!! Some of the best service and good atmosphere!!!!

Yelp
Everything was impeccable! We came for dinner for my husband's birthday and the owner(s) were so wonderful. The service and hospitality was not only great but the food was delicious! We had a few items, tacos, burritos, all with seafood elements which we loved. The perron, pulpo and shrimp tacos were so flavorful. Thank you for a delicious dinner and good time! My husband Jorge had a spectacular birthday! Looking forward to coming back again soon!
google avatar

Dung N.

Yelp
Hubby found this hidden gem and ordered a couple of burritos for us to share as our after midnight snack. Not too many establishments are open this late, so it was nice to find a spot that has birria, tacos, baked potatoes, and seafood! He got the Los Cuates and surf and turf and both burritos were loaded and full of flavor. I would love to try their aguachile and other seafood items next time!
google avatar

Cheryl G.

Yelp
Just okay for me. The burritos were decent but very small for $16 each. I thought my man's surf and turf burrito was much better than the los Cuates - it was a bit on the "fishy" side and not in a good way. I ordered the cucumber auga fresca, which was tasty but quite viscous. They were out of soda water which I would've liked to have mixed with it. The server never brought my fiancé his water until we had asked for it several times and were almost done with our meal. It's in a cute location right on the main strip in town. Convenient if you are in the area but in my opinion way overrated.

Yelp
3.5 Stars: Ate here on a Sunday afternoon. Not super busy, but most of the tables were full with a mix of families and adults. Clean interior with loud reggaeton music playing in the background. Ordered the Las Cuates (mix of spice tuna and shrimp) and surf and turf burrito. Good flavor. Medium sized burrito for $16.00. For reference: tacos are about $5-7 a piece or you could get 3 tacos for $14.00. I know about inflation, etc., but it give the product, I felt like everything was 20% overpriced. With so many taco spots in Chula Vista, I would explore other options before coming back.

Yelp
Great food and the owners are brothers and they are extremely sweet! My friend and I were taken care of with delicious food and love how each day has a special and especially Thursdays there's all you can eat with alcohol included!

Yelp
Food was delishhhh!! Loved the shrimp cocktail and the micheladas were to die for!! Aguachile was like an explosion of flavors ‍ also loved that we could choose our level of spicy 1-10 ! Super convenient when you suffer from heartburn The main reason I loved this spot so much was for the service!!! Isabella was the best! I haven't been in a restaurant in a while where you can tell they enjoy what they do! Immediately thought, "dang I want this girl to be my friend" hahaha! Give that woman a raiseeeeee please
google avatar

Yelp
Freshly made fried (white sea bass) fish tacos. A tender and good sized portion of fish. One of the best in the area if not the best. Service was quick. The atmosphere felt a little empty for an early Friday evening.

Yelp
Best customer service provided by Isabella!! Very friendly! The food was very delicious and well prepared!! The restaurant vibes are very welcoming!!! Isabella made an awesome special drink! She was very knowledgeable and down to earth! Thank you so much

Yelp
Super cute and divey ambiance for an out of towner. I appreciated the outdoor space, limited menu, and casual conversation with the bartender. I asked for recommendations and he provided...good ones too! Fish taco was good because it was fried but actually fish wasn't that great honestly... and lettuce swap was a piece of cabbage and not lettuce. Perron was really unique and solid with great flavor. 3 seas had outstanding flavor albeit pretty "sea" like on the border of fishy. Veggie potato was a super let down. I like the idea but if you're going to have a whole potato section, I expect the potato to be cooked perfectly and this wasn't. Maybe one data point but I would not repeat that purchase, stick with the tacos. Good beer, super reasonably priced, not great bathrooms but oh well.
google avatar

Yelp
The food here was super delicious with portions that are good enough to share if desired to. The service provided by Isabellawas was excellent she made sure we had everything we needed. Isabella made our experience memorable. Happy hour here from appetizers to drinks are Wednesday- Friday from 1pm-6pm. Enjoyable music playing in the background like Karol G and the newest corridos!

Yelp
Husband and I stopped in for a quick bite and drink's and man am I happy we did! It's been years since we've been back and they definitely upgraded and revamped this place up. It's spacious and more modern, seating is very comfortable. I love the TV's, the music is such a vibe and the service is outstanding. Isabella took care of us, she provided exceptional customer service. She was friendly, and personable and gave us recommendations. She was very attentive and informed us about all the specials the restaurant had to offer. Kareoke nights, bottomless mimosas, clam chowder, coffee etc. We appreciated that so much. Keep up the great work! The food is still as delicious as we remember. Now they serve alcoholic beverages so it's definitely a 10/10 from me. They have so many specials throughout the week, one that caught our eye was the $45 special, all you can drink and eat (tacos) on Thursday nights! Guys...the tacos are mouthwatering. They are not your average small street tacos either. We'll be back for that one for sure. Taco Tuesday 3x$5 can't beat that. We are excited to try everything else on their menu. Great place to gather with friends, family or date night. Pricing is definitely affordable.
google avatar

Yelp
Good selection of tacos and decent selection of beer / mixed drinks. Will come back to try other food options.

Yelp
Come for the food, stay for the food, and the ambiance is all about the food. Ok, let me qualify.. The food should be why you're even here. If you're even curious about or craving Sinaloan cuisine served in a "shacky," street-food referencing sort of way, but with a totally Californian expression, then you've totally come to the right place. Los Cuates will serve you food to die for till you actually want nothing more than to crawl into a comfortably warm, safe space and give up the ghost. The portions are hospitable, and the freshness evident...from the time you dig into the guacamole till that first morsel of aguachile hits your palate and your brain is flooded by visions of ocean surf and She of the Jade Skirt smiling benignly and knowingly down on you. This place is a total find and such a treat for all the senses! Ok, let's talk service because I'm leaving the best for last. The crew here obviously love and respect the food and want you to love it as much as they do. They are passionate about what the place is about and go about their jobs accordingly, whether it be bussing or the front of the house. Isabella is a star and was the consummate hostess when we visited. There were issues with the payment system, and she worked around everything to make sure the food was our enduring memory of Los Cuates. If you're in Chula Vista, drop by, and if you're not get your butt down here already?!

susan g.

Yelp
Excellent food, service, and drinks! Good prices, too. I got the 3 taco lunch special, 1 adobado, 1 fish, and 1 birria. The birria was my favorite of the 3, the best dipping broth, ever, followed by the adobado. Perfect size serving of rice and beans. The michelada was delicious!

Johnny M.

Yelp
It was our first time exploring Downtown Chula Vista and as we were walking around, we noticed this cool little spot. We were served by Isabella, one of the managers, and her energy was so great. She was genuine, sweet and funny! She gave us recommendations as she explained the menu to us and made sure that when we got our food and drinks, we were happy with what we ordered. All the food we got were so fresh and flavorful, and our drinks were made with lots of love! Highly recommend coming to this place so you can try their menu and experience such a welcoming and good vibe place. And on top of all this awesomeness, the prices are extremely affordable and fair! We definitely will be coming back to eat and hang at Los Cuates!
google avatar

Cecile A.

Yelp
Super good street tacos! Loved the grilled shrimp tacos with garlic sauce. Be careful the warm chips and salsa are to die for and it's easy to eat an entire basket of them! Luis was an attentive and kind waiter!

Roseann R.

Yelp
3rd Avenue, Chula Vista has quickly transformed into a bustling hotspot. It's perfect for leisurely walks, browsing through shops, trying out new restaurants & bars. Los Cuates Restaurant grabbed our attention, prompting us to indulge in their tacos on Taco Tuesday. We were pleasantly greeted by Cesar, one of the owners. The owners are best known as Los Cuates: Javier & Cesar. My friends and I enjoyed the guacamole and sipped on drinks. The three street tacos were delicious & satisfying. The atmosphere is both welcoming and trendy. I'm looking forward to returning with my husband to explore their new breakfast offerings.

Yelp
Cute nautical theme and friendly, tentative staff. Unfortunately the food is just not there yet. Tried the loaded nachos (3/5: not a fan of the synthetic tasting nacho cheese, meat was dry, came with a few slices of avocado not guac as advertised), gobernador taco (1/5: cheese melted well, but overbearing cheddar cheese, shrimp inside had zero flavor), fish taco (3/5: first bite was tasty but perhaps from the chipotle cream I added, batter was overfried to a blackened color, fish tasted like tilapia), and green shrimp aquachile (0/5: was presented with shrimp still raw without enough time to "cook" in the lime juice; did taste the sauce and it had good flavor). Front of house staff welcomed our feedback positively. Was delighted when first arriving to see they had a well-priced all you can eat Thursday special, to include alcohol. Unfortunately, not sure we will be returning for it.
google avatar

Adriana N.

Yelp
The employees were so friendly and welcoming! However I think the food could use a lil more love. The 2 times I was there, I orders Chilaquiles and unfortunately they were very salty. I also once orders $5 small birria tacos which seemed unworthy of the price. I truly feel that the place has potential.
google avatar

Hector B.

Yelp
I wanted to like this place especially after reading all the positive reviews. The service was friendly but short staffed. Ambiance seemed ok, not too busy at the time with seating inside and outside. The problem I have is with the food not being so great . All the food I ordered was to go. I ordered fish tacos, shrimp ceviche, and a campechana. To my surprise when I got home, there was no salsa or sauce for the fish tacos. It was just beer battered fish, corn, tortilla, and cabbage/pico in another container. The beer battered fish was OK but I had to find a way to make these fish tacos taste good without SALSA or sauce that should've been provided. The Campechana was bland and lacked flavor. The ceviche also bland. The prices are too high for the food being served. Oh well Can't say I didn't give them a chance.

Yelp
I am a San Diego Native. I Love Mexican Seafood. I have had my Favorites for 38 years in the South Bay of San Diego. I believe that the South Bay of San Diego has the most delicious Mexican food than anywhere in the World. Los Cuates is a New Restaurant on the Block , however they may be top 5 Mexican Seafood restaurants in California or maybe even the world. I was very impressed with their outside seating and ambiance. But let me start with the Drinks. I had a Paloma straight traditional that was perfectly mixed. Then I order Chips and salsa with Guacamole. It took a little time to come out but when it did it was superb in Freshness and very tasty. I ordered the Seafood mix Aguachilies Negros. My wife ordered the Gobanador smoked Tuna Taco with shrimp. My wife who is very sceptical of newer restaurants in the South Bay of San Diego was expecting a let down as with most New Restaurants in the South Bay. She was in pure satisfaction when she took the first bite of her Gobanador Taco. I had to wait a little for my Aguachilies Negros at level 10 spicy as I love challenging myself to spicy food . It was absolutely delicious and met the spice Level I love which is a big thing to me when a Restaurant claims to have a super spicy dish but can't deliver. Bottom line San Diego. This Restaurant may be one of the best Mexican Seafood Restaurants in San Diego. Maybe even The world. Los Cuates Welcome to the one of the most Competitive Cities in the world for Mexican Cuisine. You definitely have my Vote as one of the Best.

Santiago O.

Yelp
Best mariscos in the South Bay. HANDS DOWN. If you're ever in Chula and in need of good seafood, touchdown.

Yelp
Wow! First time at Cuates. Stopped in for a quick taco and some beer. We sat outside super friendly service. Our server was helpful and so sweet! It was an excellent dining experience. With all of the choices on 3rd ave this will be at the top of our list. As we were paying we met the cuates (owners) such nice people!
google avatar

Jayy G.

Yelp
Randomly found this place on yelp and I can say it's a great find. Everything we ordered tasted amazing. We came with a toddler and she personally enjoyed the "dance floor". The servers were friendly, what more can you ask for. If you can make it here I'd recommend that you do.
google avatar

Roz E.

Yelp
Was down in the area and looking for place to eat, and found this place! It's located in the Third Street Village of Chula Vista. Parking along the main street and also in a lot. Felt like seafood, so we got the shrimp rockas, seafood tower, and the shrimp aguachile! Hit the spot! Yum! The shrimp rockas was deep fried and totally enjoyed it! Sad when it was all gone! Seafood tower was packed with shrimp, scallops, octopus, and fish! We couldn't finish this, so we had leftovers! Lastly, we got the shrimp aguachile with the salsa negra! This was so good! If you're in the area, check them out!

Victoria C.

Yelp
I truly don't understand how this place has good reviews? It is not good The service was not good, the chips were old and stale, the tortillas were hard and stale, and the tacos themselves lacked a lot of flavor. The music inside was so loud we opted to be outside, and I am not typically picky about that. All around not a good place to spend your money, so skip it.
google avatar

Phillip G.

Yelp
Food was ok. The service was bad only cause they only had one server. It's a super chill spot.

Leo M.

Yelp
Awesome food , Awesome Service .. The guys that run this place (Cesar and Javier) are motivated, friendly and serve phenomenal food .. Brought my wife, who is a ceviche snob, and she loved the ceviche .. I had a couple cold beers and birria tacos .. DELICIOUS !! They have a Happy Hour Thursday that is a real deal also .. I'll be back for that !!
google avatar

Rosa G.

Yelp
Tacos were delicious. The original margarita was fire. Definitely coming back!! They also were showing the padres game a vibe forsureee. Isabella was super nice!! Loved her. She gave great recommendations, was super attentive & had great conversation. She definitely made my experience here the best. I will be back for the bottomless mimosas and to visit my new friend Isabella.

Yelp
Very good food and just stand-out, authentic service that really made our night. Friendly, engaged staff that made us feel welcome.

Yelp
Been on my try list for a while. Decided to try something new. I had the goat, shrimp with marlin, and fish. Everything came piping hot. The goat was served in strips. Not too gamey but would liked it to be more tender. Maybe that's why so many cultures serve it in stews. The marlin tasted a little like bacalao and added a different flavor profile to the shrimp. I put the pink sauce on everything as the tacos needed some more flavor and a creamy fatty component. A large street side patio along with indoor seating. Meter parking unless you want to hunt for free parking.

Cameron P.

Yelp
Amazing food! I went to Los Cuates this past Friday for my work lunch. Caesar spent the time breaking the menu down to me and talking about their ongoing deals. The fish tacos were absolutely delicious! Thank you guys! I will be there again.
google avatar

Marc B.

Yelp
Sat on the deck to relax and have a mid-afternoon taco, which came with chips and salsa. The chips were good, but the pico de gallo was very watered down. The adobado taco was dry and came without salsa. Another couple was on the deck with me, but that was it (I don't think there were any customers inside). It took the server a few minutes to bring salsa (verde), which was pretty mild and also a bit watered down. The contents of the taco were fine. I paid with credit card and there was a surcharge automatically added. My bill wasn't that big, but it's the principle that matters... I wasn't told before it was tacked on to my bill.

Yelp
Back again with a party of 12. As busy as it was for AYCE Thursday the staff were really friendly and nice. The tacos, ceviche and michelada so delicious! Great service and food! Will come back again for more!

Yelp
I went there for breakfast. Excellent service, great food, good music, nicely decorated. Great selection of coffee drinks and lattes

Yelp
We really enjoyed all our food. We started off with some broth, guacamole, fish fritters, aguachile, and then the fish burrito. Everything was great. I was really surprised that the smoked fish wasn't too fishy, but since it was a favorite I decided to try it. It was excellent.
google avatar

Fernanda M.

Yelp
Today we were walking down 3rd avenue and saw this place as a good place to have a margarita on reviews so we decided to try it out. I would like to say the margarita was very delicious and so was the food we had. We only had appetizers. We had the rockas, fish bites and loaded nachos and they were all pretty good. The only thing was the service, I am not sure if they are understaffed but it for a while we didn't see anyone but we weren't left alone for too long. The place looks a lil outdated a bit compared to other places around but it still had a good vibe.

Yelp
They have great mariscos on Third Ave in Chula Vista love the Ceviche, the Pulpo that has a garlic sauce, the shrimp is so fire, and love the fish soup they give In The beginning with Chips and salsa, the restaurant means twins and they are doing it all right with the family business come check it out

It's a cute little place with very tasty seafood tacos. We ate on the cute shaded patio out front and enjoyed the shrimp tacos, an octopus taco, a quesabirra taco and a mixed seafood ceviche. The server was very nice and the food delicious. My horchata seemed a little watered down. Then I went to use the restroom. Ladies, beware! No toilet paper, the toilet had a black mold ring around the waterline and the black mold appeared to be growing 4" up the wall next to the toilet. Gross. They probably hadn't checked the condition of the bathroom in over a month. I would have notified my server but the entire restaurant appeared to be deserted: no staff in sight!
