Where to Find Tantalizing Holiday Tamales in Phoenix

"Los Dos Molinos in Mesa is known for its New Mexican-style cuisine, and the tamales are no exception — they pack serious heat. Made with New Mexico chiles, varieties include red carne adovada (New Mexican-style pork), red chile beef, green chile chicken, green chile corn, red chile machaca, and red chile beef with blue corn. Smothered with chile and cheese, tamales are $6.50 a la carte or $40 for a frozen dozen, which can be ordered in advance. For serious tamale fans, three dozen homemade tamales are $100, each dozen paired with a pint of Hatch chile sauce." - Mcconnell Quinn

Where to Eat in Phoenix

"A restaurant that mashes Mexican food, Southwestern cuisine, and American food. Appetizers include Mexican pizza, cheese crisps, and chips and salsa. The signature dish is the adovada ribs, and another great option is the flautas plate. The restaurant offers its fare in two locations, south Phoenix and Mesa." - MATADOR_NETWORK

Came for happy hour with a friend! The margs were amazing and service was great. The food however left something to be desired unfortunately! The chicken taco was extremely bland and dry. And the rice and beans had little flavor. My friend liked the nachos! Their queso is SPICY (which I love!) but just a heads up! I probably would go here again just get something else.

Google
Top Quality fresh home made Mexican Food. Service is friendly and efficient. A family owned group (3 restaurant) where you are treated like a guest in their house. We stop every year on our way to Sedona. We order lunch to eat and take home two meals for later. I can’t say how much we really love their food.

Google
As my loyal, dedicated followers know, my purpose in life is to find the world’s best chimichanga. That quest has led me here, to Los Dos Molinos on Camelback Rd. On the universal 13 point scale of chimichanga deliciousness, this chimi scored a respectable 10 1/2. The tortilla came out a little burnt, and the chimichanga was definitely on the smaller side. The green sauce was quite good, and I liked the whole pinto beans instead of the refried beans. Train up your fryer people, invite me back, and I’ll edit my review. Until then, my search for the best chimichanga in the world continues.

Google
The most authentic Mexican food in the valley! This is a staple for me and my family. Every time we have people in town we take them here. It’s a family owned and operated business, which is hard to find in Arizona. Go support them and enjoy some amazing food!

I absolutely love this place. First time coming, and the food is on point. 🔥 if your from NM come check it out. It's what your looking for. I will be definitely coming back.

Google
This is one of my favorite restaurants in the world. A friend introduced me to the place and I became a regular while I was there for work. Their margaritas are incredibly potent without realizing it. I enjoy the frozen prickly pear. They have the traditional New Mexico green and red sauces. They get truck loads of Hatch chilies durning the season and then roast them on site. There they freeze it for the year. It is my favorite of all Hatch sauces I have tired and recommend it. Their chimichanga is perfect. Every place I try now is compared to theirs. Lastly the manger is truly amazing. I had not been there a year and asked how I was and remembered my order. I have planed work trips around getting food here and it is well worth the stop if you are in the area.

Stopped by this morning since it was near by my dealership and I was waiting for my car to be serviced . I went in right as they opened and service was super quick and everyone is friendly as you walk in. They offer chips and salsa and the salsa was so good . Me and my fiance both got the chimichanga with red salsa and beef and it was delicious, very happily enjoying my leftover right now writing this. Portions are great, the food comes out in a huge plate and the server was great as well. The server even gave my little son a candy at the end which I found to be so sweet. Would recommend and will be coming back ! Thank you!

Google
Our family has been enjoying their food since 2001 and it is always consistent and delicious. Every time we visit Phoenix it's a must visit. Great service and really good margaritas, just the best in our opinion.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots! I love their happy hour and you will leave full without spending too much. The happy hour tacos chicken or beef are just a few bucks and pair well with the queso or chorizo dip. I also highly recommend trying the rose margaritas. The margaritas taste great and are pretty strong so you should be good with one or two. The service is always superior and the wait staff is kind and knowledgeable about the menu. The restaurant has a couple different sections so you can sit towards the bar, at the tables, or in the back section. Be sure to stop by here for some great New Mexican food!

Yelp
This New Mexico inspired restaurant was great! We went on a Saturday night around 7p and were seated right away. The ambiance is cool, Mexican dive bar-ish. All of the staff working were friendly. I ordered the fresh margarita and it was perfect! For food I ordered the Los Dos flautas dinner and it was exactly what I imagined and hoped it would be. The rice and beans on the side were tasty too! For dessert, I ordered the pumpkin flan to go, and devoured it when I got home. It was delicious!!! I can't wait to come back, highly recommend if your looking for a taste of New Mexico

Yelp
Food drinks are delicious.. services is great to very attentive. I love their barbacoa pizza. Let's not talk about their margaritas. They are to die for. I love their fact that they are make with natural lime juice. The atmosphere is relaxing and they have good background music.

Yelp
Solid place for happy hour! They have $8 margaritas and tons of appetizer options Service was quick and friendly I hadn't been here in awhile but I'm glad we chose this for our Friday night pre movie happy hour Definitely check it out if you're in the area :)

Yelp
When we ate there the service was horrible, We had to wait a long time to get waited on and it took a long time to get our food, Nothing special about the food it was mediocre at best.

Yelp
Large group dining can be a challenge as we were 20 to 25 as we kicked off our Volleyball season with Players, Parents & Coaches. SO glad Los Dos Molinos has that outdoor patio area which made it easy to get us into 3 large tables with space, yet privacy and still good for interaction between us all. They made ordering really easy as players just gave us their jersey number and they matched it up so we didn't have to say which player etc... Some of my go to favorite items are the Adovada Ribs and the Los Dos Flautas. I felt like the spokesperson offering up my recommendations and a few went with my recommendations. I ordered the Ribs along with a taco salad, and we had Small bowl of the New Mexico Green Chile Stew, Taco Salad, and the Green Corn Tamale with side of Beans & Rice. I warned the players about the spicy level and they loved it. I took myself to the bar to get another prickly pear cocktail and connected with some new friends that made my experience great. Looking forward to coming back here as the food is stellar, the staff is great and Parking is easy.

Yelp
So far, my wife and I have tried two of the three Los Dos Molinos in the Valley. One in South Phoenix and the other in Uptown'. We've both come to the same conclusion. Recently we visited the Uptown establishment on a whim and we are both lovers and aficionados of New Mexican Cuisine. As the usual in Southwestern, New Mexican and Mexican restos, we were started with the mandatory chips and salsa. I must say, they brag about it with a plomb and brag very well about it. Both their green and red salsas are extraordinarily good, flavorful, chock full of incredible ingredients that make it fantastic. To me, green salsa is it! Caveat emptor, be ready for "hot" as they warn you in their business intro - they have no mild in their vocabulary or recipes! Yet with the heat and all you still can appreciate the terrific taste - it's not just hot its tasty. Our margaritas came in handy to soothe the heat! The House Margarita, although on the sweet side, was fairly enjoyable. On the other hand, the OG Margie on the rocks is bland! Deciding to have an early dinner, I ordered the Enchilada Dinner consisting of a fantastically prep'd Carnitas, super tender and fall apart good, and what appeared to be homemade blue corn tortillas serving as a bed for everything to the extreme covered with New Mexico red chile, along with cheese and a perfectly fried egg, along with standard red beans & rice. Unfortunately for as tender and fresh the Carnitas were, they were bland and flavorless. It seemed as if the chef forgot to put in the ingredients! My wife's dish was not far behind in the lackluster and apparent shortage in many elements of seasonings in her Carnitas of slow cooked pork, covered to the extreme hilt with cheese, and also served with rice, beans and a homemade flour tortilla. It's unfortunate for those who respect, enjoy and appreciate that which is true and delectable New Mexican Cuisine. As I mentioned, they have three locations, we've tried two. Three strikes you're out! For a plain, non-descript and run of the mill meal this location is just OK, if you're looking for an excellent New Mexican Culinary delight there are a few other fine places out there in the Valley!

Yelp
We've been going here since it opened since its near our home. But it has increasingly gone down. The last time we were there the salsa was just tomato sauce no spice and the food was poor quality. The service last time seemed like new lady and it was just ok. The margaritas arent as good. I just wonder if it will be around long. Id love to see it do well but ownership must improve it

Yelp
My husband and I have taken many of our visiting family members to Los Dos Molinos and they all LOVE it! Margaritas and Micheladas are delicious in addition to any of the food we have ordered. We love to sit on the patio when the weather is nice. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The service started out amazing, server was excellent. He knew his menu knowledge and history. The food was excellent. As someone who loves New Mexico Cuisine, the hatch chilies , were fire . The cold Modelo's topped it off. Ambiance was eclectic and authentic. Located on Baseline & Central. #cheflife

Yelp
We've been here many times but yesterday's lunch fell short due to the house salsas (2) were too darn hot even for hot lovers. Another couple sitting next to us thought the same thing! You can't enjoy the meal with salsa that is over powering the dish! You would think they offer a mild and a hot but both were extra hot! . Without a good salsa, the meal was blah!

Yelp
Food is delicious. The owner and manager are delightful but one of the male servers leaves a lot to be desired. I have been there 3 times and he makes me feel like an annoyance rather than a guest. Everyone else is better so I almost gave them a 5!

Yelp
I live in Albuquerque, NM and am currently in Phoenix on a business trip. I heard about Los Dos Molinos through Reddit and immediately became intrigued. I made the 30 minute drive from my hotel to give it a try. Boy, was that a mistake. The chips and salsa were decent, but far from anything that would be served in an actual New Mexican restaurant. I also ordered a side of guacamole to go with the chips, which was by far the highlight of the meal. I'm a huge lover of chile rellenos, and decided to have that as my meal. The entire dish was extremely bland and devoid of any heat, as well as inauthentic. The chile relleno was soggy and falling apart and seemed more like a poblano than the New Mexico green chile that they claim. The green chile sauce on top was extremely watery and lacked both heat and flavor. Unfortunately, the service was also extremely poor. My server took my drink and food order, and that was it. He never once checked on me after the food was dropped off by a runner. Oh, he did also drop off the check, and still didn't ask me about how I enjoyed my food. He also didn't even take the final check payment. The host is the one that bussed my table and did the majority of the work, and then a different individual took the payment. Overall it was an extremely disappointing experience.

Yelp
Good service and nice location. But food is just "good" not more else to say. Just your average local Mexican restaurant. Full bar tho

Yelp
We have been going to the South Phoenix Los Dos Molinos(LDM) for many years. We have been used to abstaining from LDM during the winters when the snow birds flock amongst us and take over the joint. We didn't feel like holding out and we came by the Camelback location. We told ourselves that if the wait was long we would go somewhere else. Having nothing to lose but a quick stop, we found out the wait was very short. I park in the dirt lot behind LDS and the huge smile and anticipation hit while walking up to the front door. Sure enough within 10-15 minutes we are ushered to our table. The service at this Los Dos Molinos location is top notch! The greatest find for our family was that the food had the exact taste to the South Phoenix location we were solely going to. Guess what, we now have a second spot when a LDM craving hits! If you're reading this and are like my family or myself. Please consider trying another Los Dos Molinos location!

Yelp
Food was good. Service was ok. The music was nice. Furthermore I was charged $12 for more than 6 people? If I would've known I wouldn't have dine there in the first place

Yelp
Recently a new item was added to the weekend brunch menu: Papas Rancheros. OMG!!! Had it with the chorizo option, I may never order anything else off the brunch menu again. Papas Rancheros for the win!!!

Yelp
Always good! Quick service and great food. I recommend the house margarita and a chimi.

Yelp
Four stars are for the fresh margarita only! The fresh margarita is BOMB!! Salted rim, sooo satisfying!! Now on to the food...my friend and I wanted to have some tacos and margaritas. Now you would think at a Mexican restaurant, they would have "Mexican" street tacos but these are NOT it. These tacos were gross. Yeah, I said it. Gross. I don't remember the meat choices but these were on cold flour tortillas (eww, flour???) and had lettuce and cheese (wtf?? This isn't Taco Bell!!) When asked if cilantro/onions etc can be substituted they said sure, for an upcharge. Really?? You wanna upcharge cilantro and onions?? Should of been a sign right there that this place is not really authentic. Luckily I also ordered a side of rice/beans and those were great and ate those and left those gross "tacos". Not sure if I'd be back for more than chips/salsas and margs. They did have some other intriguing menu options but if you can't even make decent tacos, do I dare??

Roger D.

Yelp
The food was mid . The service was trash can't make an over easy egg to save Mr. Georges (Jorge) life . They don't let you order a side of anything really. If you pick a meat , you better get married to it because at this place your choice is for life. No paying for a side of chorizo or carnitas . Cowboy coffee was stale and the whiskey they poured in it was bottom shelf, I wouldn't even give to my dog. If you want trash food and horrible service, this is definitely a prime stop in wonder Arizona. Maybe they should take this establishment back to New Mexico . We Arizonians love great service and great food . Oh and maybe they should invest in togo cups. Get with the times.

Yelp
What a fun place with an authentic vibe!! They aren't messing around with Cinco!! We went early for a taco and drink on the patio before the nighttime festivities- you could tell they were ready for a crowd!! We had great house margaritas that were on special and very potent! We had a few street tacos and we loved the flavors of them all!! We had some fun with the photo props as well!! We will definitely be back for some delicious food!! Thanks!!

Yelp
Such a fun place to eat. Especially if you visit scorpion Gulch. The service is not great but the New Mexican food is awesome. Cool ambience and worth a visit.

Britta H.

Yelp
Everyone makes sure you're taken care of not just the waiter. Everyone is so kind and professional especially Eric :) Food is so good and you can tell it was made from scratch:

Scott M.

Yelp
Watch out for their scam! They like to represent the specials but actually over charge you on the final bill. They don't provide you the itemized list until after they run your card. STAY AWAY! There are other places to eat that are actually New Mexico style food with homemade taco shells! When we challenged the bill they were rude and couldn't care less. They probably have this happen time and time again! That's why they are so defensive STAY AWAY!!!
google avatar

Maegan A.

Yelp
I love this place! If you're looking for a neighborhood Mexican restaurant then this is your place. Complete with complimentary chips and salsa, the service is quick, and margarita are strong. Be careful if you're sensitive to spicy as the salsa and some dishes are spice forward.

Yelp
Los Dos Molinos is an institution and throwing rocks at something we all know and love for "go to" New Mexican food is not something I take lightly. I've been to most of the locations including the now-closed store in NYC. The location I like going to is Los Dos Molinos Uptown on Camelback. The food has always been amazing but if you don't like spicy salsa then this is definitely not the place for you. I absolutely love the carnitas plate with a fried egg on top. Wow! But in the last 4 times I've been there with a party size of 3 or 4, and over the span of the last 2 years, the table service has almost become non-existent. So, I'm going to finish this review on just the service at this location only. The standard customer arrival process: (1) Upon arrival, you will typically be seated by one of the servers. (2) The server that seats you, in many cases, is your actual server. (3) You will always be asked what you would like to drink. I think this can be improved in the table assignment "who-does-what" as it creates confusion later. And you will need a good stiff drink if you are one of the unfortunate souls on a "table island" with no service. Once the kitchen gets the food order, the kitchen staff and runners do an excellent job with delivery. But that order NEEDS to take place. While we waited, another table got seated (points 1, 2, and 3 executed) and within 5 minutes the server (same as ours) took their order and received their food. I tried to get ANY server's attention and it is as if our table didn't exist. I finally went to the one person not really doing anything figuring he was in-charge. After saying how long it had been he proceeded to tell me that they had received 30 food orders in 10 minutes. So, am I to assume you are telling me to go pound sand? Anyway, he became our server. It was now easy to see our table now that the table that came AFTER us had finished up and left. Things worked at lighting speed once I complained. Even offering us 3 complimentary shots of tequila. My advice would be to get any food here to go or eat at the bar only with a dedicated bartender. The restaurant is in a great location, has a cool vibe with the décor, and the food is great. But their service staff needs to learn some basic things on service because, as far as I can tell, it doesn't exist and you'll be stuck on a castaway table (movie reference) looking for something more than a coconut falling from the only tree on the island (did I mention the first bowl of chips and salsa are free? Whoop dee doo).

Yelp
This is actually my third visit to Los Dos. First time was dinner, then I realized it's close enough for a quick lunch so I've done that twice. For the dinner I had the rellano plate which was delicious. All Mexican restaurants should be judged by their rellano, rice and beans. Los Dos passes with flying colors. My first lunch was a red chili burrito. It was amazing. And fast. Second lunch was the green chili stew. Another winner! It's like it is stated, it's a stew not just green chili (chili verde) but the taste is over the top. Fast friendly service. Be warned, you have to like spicy to enjoy this place!
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
This was delicious! Got a relleno burrito with the green sauce! It was the best I've had, I actually left half of it there because i forgot to take it home. So you could try it if it's still on the bar.
google avatar

Sonya L.

Yelp
Food was terrible. I ordered tacos and the corn tortilla shell was literally the kind you get from a box, or a fast food restaurant. I didn't know you could screw up tacos, but some how they did. If you want tacos, go to Ritos. And the customer service was just as bad. We had to ask for everything, water, margaritas, chips, salsa. And when we did ask, our server was incredibly rude!
google avatar

Donny W.

Yelp
I love place, every time I come to Phoenix in on business I have to eat here at least once. Tonight was taco Tuesday. Had 3 street tacos loaded with cheese, lettuce and meat. Never been disappointed. The locals seem to like it allot it's a gem I wish was in my town. Salsa is not for the faint of heart it's spicy fresh New Mexican style loaded with flavor you never get anywhere else!
google avatar

Carlos D.

Yelp
Food tasted like it had been reheated on a microwave. Friendly servers, but I will not be going there again.

Yelp
Great food and fun place and people. Enjoy the Tom Mix home location as well as the newer one.

Yelp
I was recently in Arizona for a couple of days while on a trip and anytime I'm in Texas or southwest of it I try to get at least one great meal at a Mexican restaurant. Los Dos was highly recommended by a local Phoenician and we gave it a go. Arrived at 6 pm on a Friday night and waited for a table less than 10 minutes. Ambience is casual but intimate, on the verge of hipster but not quite. It feels more upscale than its prices. Complimentary chips were good and the red and green salsas were delicious, both very spicy but I love spice and these hit the spot with deep layered heat that doesn't forego flavor or completely torch the tongue to the point the meal will be less flavorful. I ordered a "fresh margarita" after contemplating saving $5 by going for the "OG margarita". Figuring that one tasted like any old basic marg', I went with the up-spend. Glad I did, the square-glassed salt-rimmed fresh marg' was indeed fresh, crisp, and more than enough to grease the wheels. I ordered the flautas plate--when it said "one meat", I mistakenly thought it meant one meat per flauta (two flautas on the plate) but the server (somewhat brusquely, but that's ok) corrected me and chose for me (roasted garlic pork--it was good). The fresh crema and guacamole on the side and the rancher style beans and rice added to the meal and the flautas were encased in flaky, buttery, crispy excellence. My dining partner had the ground beef burrito and loved it as well. All in all, a great meal for a good price (2 of us dined for under $50 including a 20% tip). Service as a bit less than friendly but no real complaints.

Yelp
I have been coming here for decades! Food is absolutely wonderful and the drinks fabulous! Cadillac margarita is a must and the slow cooked pork is the absolute best, slow cooked citrus marinade. Service is excellent as it has always been 10/10 Side not to owners, the place is looking aged, Saltillo tile needs refurbishment any thoughts on this ? I would like to see the location match the awesome food and service.

Shelley G.

Yelp
Love this family owned hole in the wall! Probably some of the best Mexican food we have had in the Phoenix area. Margaritas are amazing! It is a must try for sure!
google avatar

Tai Vati B.

Yelp
Unfortunately, our server did not make our visit delightful. He was dismissive and avoided our table even if we were nothing but kind and polite. The manager made things right and comped our meal but I am still left to wonder why the server treated our table so differently from the rest?

Connor W.

Yelp
Great food, great service. Went during happy hour and got the $2 street tacos with an orange blossom beer. It hit the spot!
google avatar

Yelp
Amazing flavors, terrific service, and really great atmosphere here. I enjoyed the adovade chimichanga and my wife had the relleno. Both were fantastic
google avatar

Rigo V.

Yelp
Love this joint! My roommate and I come in often and are always greeted with staff that is full of energy. The food is great. From their happy hour tacos to their adovada ribs. They never disappoint. Don't get me started on their La Rosa Margarita. One of these will help you unwind and have a spectacular night. If you're a local, this is the perfect place to come watch the Phoenix Suns and the Az Diamondbacks. Special thanks to our server/bartender Luis. Always great attitude.

Yelp
Sopapillas are hard to find, so I looked forward to finding some on my brief trip to Phoenix. My Uber driver recommended three places, and I chose this one (one didn't have sopapilla on the menu and the other was more of a fried bread place). I mention this context because I assume the particular style of heavily fried and somewhat crispy sopapilla served here is preferred by some. I personally prefer the fluffy, lightly fried sopapilla. This place also serves a variety of toppings which I hadn't seen before (I didn't try on this trip). For my entrée, I ordered a garlic shredded pork soft taco. I was surprised that it had very little garlic or seasoning. Perhaps I missed that I need to season to taste? I wonder because the salsa for the chips was BLAZING hot. Delivered instant tears to my eyes! An extreme contrast to the food. (Note I didn't eat my beans but the rice also had very little flavoring). I hope one day to try one more entree and come away a little more educated on how the food is seasoned.

Denise L.

Yelp
The food was NOT up to par at all! Who makes tacos with store bought shells!??! The waitress forgot to bring our drinks, we had to flag down the bartender to help us! Ugh never again! I don't leave reviews unless necessary!
google avatar

Atiana N.

Yelp
The food and drinks are AMAZING! My spice level is ketchup but I can't resist! SUPER SUPER SPICY! But it's not just all heat, it's flavor as well! Service is quick and simple. I've always leave this place in a food coma.
google avatar

Jaelyn S.

Yelp
I loved this restaurant. Very lively and fun place to eat. Family friendly. The food was great, especially my burrito. The garlic shrimp has a clear thick garlic sauce which was new to me, I think I liked it but I would get the sauce on the side so I can add it as I please. The drinks were pretty strong, but in a good way. Go try this restaurant out!
google avatar

Marc D.

Yelp
First off the exterior when you pull up for the first time is deceiving but continue on. The interior is authentic and great setting. Very enjoyable. The food was fantastic and the portions were huge. You will not leave hungry. The chili verde sauce has some kick but is great. Service was above average and very friendly. Check this place out. We will return at night for drinks and dinner soon.

Yelp
We have intended to visit Los Dos since we moved to Arizona in June. They had a Covid closure for awhile; but they are back now. We sat on the patio, I had the Carnitas and they were fantastic. Hubby had the green Chile stew and he was quite happy. My daughter ordered a tamale and she was just 'meh', claimed it was very dry. Halfway thru our meal; they allowed an eight person party to sit right by us; so was super uncomfortable. So we hurried up; paid and left. They did have certain seats blocked off, but in our case, these people were literally two feet from us. The food is really good, but they need to work on the Covid precautions. Staff did wear masks, and the service was very good. We will do takeout for awhile longer
google avatar

Maryanne M.

Yelp
I am at Los dos Molinos every Saturday morning for the brunch! Fresh Margaritas are to die for. (As a side note, you can order anything on the menu all day long, but brunch has a limited time frame) The Grande Buritto is huge and you will most likely need to take leftovers home. Right now they are offering a shrimp stew during the winter months that is so good. I love the staff (and the food) Los Dos Molinos is an Arizona Treasure.
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
Any Mexican food restaurant that uses pre-made taco shells does not deserve to be in business

Mike C.

Yelp
Food is great. I am a Thai and Mexican food fanatic and travel extensively. This place is my favorite in Phoenix. I like others also but for good, spicy Mexican food this is at the top. More than just the traditional chain food items. I lived in New Mexico and I like all the green chili dishes. If you want true New Mexican cuisine try Richardsons.

Yelp
came up on this place while getting my car serviced . love the ambience and could tell it was a local crowd. Food was on the spicy side which was just fine for me at the shredded beef burrito. The price was more than what was on their website but it was worth it. I like how they make the food to order and don't mix words they tell you upfront the food spicy, so there's no disappointment The service was great too. I'll definitely be back.
