Phoenix, Arizona’s Best Restaurant Dishes and Drinks | Eater Phoenix

"What is more Phoenix than eating a cactus? Nopales are typically associated with central and southern Mexico, where the nopal cactus grows abundantly, and have long been commonplace in Phoenix restaurants. Cactus paddles from the plant are scraped free of any thorns, grilled, and sliced into strips. At Los Reyes de la Torta, they can be served atop huaraches — a thick, oblong masa base topped with refried beans, cheese, and fresh toppings — or offered in a classic corn quesadilla dish. They make for a vegetarian-friendly option that perfectly embodies Arizona." - McConnell Quinn

Los Reyes de la Torta - Review - Uptown - Phoenix - The Infatuation

"Our favorite tortas (Mexican sandwiches) in the city are at Los Reyes de la Torta. The bread is soft, the fillings are delicious, and it’ll be so large you’ll wonder how you ever spent $10 on anything else. The most popular torta - and our favorite - is the Norteña with chipotle-marinated chicken or steak with caramelized jalapeños, onions, melted mozzarella, and a smear of refried beans. Pair it with one of their many shareable frescas (freshly squeezed juices) or even better, BYOB. Los Reyes is a larger space than Tacos Chiwas, but still super casual." - Joanna Boyle

The servers are beautiful Latinas, everyone looks sharp and super attentive. The Agua Fresca’s are absolutely perfect. Everything on the menu is awesome, this place will not disappoint your taste buds. Good for small and medium size groups. Sunday is normally super busy. The menudo is Bomb!!! If you’re looking for something a little different from the rest, give it a shot.

Google
Oh my gosh! I cannot believe that I have not been to this place in over 7 years. I tried my favorite dish, green chili chicken enchiladas. The verde sauce flavors are just amazing with a zing of spice. Rice is great! I did order a $5 Tostada de Ceviche! Perfect! Cane with a few slices of avocado and fresh limes. Great appetizer right before the main dish. Service was quick. Plates came out hot. Waitress was tentative to my party of three speaking both Spanish and English. Superior job everyone! I’ll see you again soon. 🫶🏼🤓🫶🏼

I’ve visited this restaurant several times now, and each experience has been a treat. Most recently, I brought my family along and we all left happy and full. I ordered a burger and a mangoneada, both of which were flavorful and satisfying. For dessert, I highly recommend the fresas con crema-they’re always fresh, sweet, and the perfect way to end a meal. One thing to note: the tables are a bit close together, so it can feel a little cramped, especially when it’s busy and you’re trying to navigate around other guests. This isn’t really a spot I’d choose for a quiet or intimate atmosphere, but it’s worth visiting for the food. The restaurant can get quite crowded and quite loud on weekends, so be prepared for a possible wait and slightly slower service during peak hours.

Google
My “atmosphere” rating is based on the fact this is not the kind of restaurant you come to if you’re looking for “atmosphere”. This is a no frills, “we’re about the food” kind of place and the food is the value. The food served here is along the lines of Mexican food found in the interior of the country and NOT New Mexican, Sonoran, or California/Baja style Mexican food. The portions are large and everything I’ve tried is good but Los Reyes is known for their tortas and you can’t miss with one of their tortas. Bring a big appetite !

We have been to this restaurant for years and the food and service is always excellent. More recently, we took a group of about 30 friends for dinner and everyone loved it! Thank you to the the Manager Gloria for being so organized, responsive, and excellent to deal with! Outstanding food, fresh, authentic, and extremely flavorful, and an extensive menu for both meat eaters and vegans. You cannot go wrong with a torta, but other excellent choices include quesadillas de maiz (corn tortilla quesadillas, make sure to get it Estilo Del Rey style (green salsa, queso fresco, onions, cilantro, and sour cream)) and huaraches (like a Mexican pizza with beans, green salsa, onions, and queso fresco). Wash it down with fresh and excellent different styles of specialty drinks, agua frescas (natural juice, cremosas with sweetened condensed milk, or liquados (milkshakes)), or a horchata (rice milk plus cinnamon drink). And absolutely make sure to leave room for a healthy dessert like coctel de fruta with miel (fresh fruit cocktail with honey). We will be back, and often!!

Google
Los Reyes de la Torta is the first restaurant my wife took me to, over 15 years ago - and we ate here regularly until we moved to Texas 10 years ago. The food is still fantastic. The tortas are 👌and the drinks are amazing. Great service and atmosphere, too.

Google
Was very delicious 😋 enjoyed our meal portion sizes are pretty big even for the kids menu. They have updated the restaurant looks nice. For a family of 5 cost us $73 without tip.

Yelp
Food is great! Best tortas in AZ! I was visiting from Texas staff was great and the food was delicious.

Yelp
Authentic Mexican food is served here. My group ordered tacos, quesadillas and enchiladas. Everyone was happy with their food. My enchilada was very fresh and served with right amount of chicken to tortilla to sauce ratio. The veggies were very fresh too. Rice was delicious but I wished it was served with little bit of beans. Portions were filling, and price was decent. Service was excellent. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Yelp
Overpriced, but pretty quesadilla. This thing cost $20,, but really didn't contain anything. Inside was mozzarella cheese and chicken and outside was just sour cream for the extra 4 bucks. Probably would get a torta next time.

Yelp
Been coming here for years and the food is always on point! Verde Pasion is really refreshing! Service was great!

Yelp
This is one of those IYKYK places! I have driven past Los Reyes countless times and finally had time - and appetite- to drop in. Did. Not. Disappoint. The service was very friendly. The torta was fantastic, I ate every bite!

Alejandra M.

Yelp
I was honestly shocked at how delicious my meal was. I ordered the Norteña with beef. The service was nice and friendly as well. Loved the music playing too.

Yelp
It had been a hot minute since visiting this restaurant. They are known for their tortas as the name implies. A torta is a Mexican sandwich. It was fairly early yet the place is packed. A good sign. Most clientele are Spanish speaking. All servers are nice and speak English. We ordered the Cubana (ham, mozzarella, pork sirloin, tomato, onions, jalapeños, avocado and mayo) and Pechuga Asada (grilled chicken breast, mozzarella cheese, tomato, onions, jalapeños, avocado and mayo) tortas. Service was pleasant and quick. Can you say Muy bueño?! My dish came with a green salad and grilled onions. The other dish comes with potato chips. The tortas were delicious and good in size. The bread was lightly grilled and the meats were abundant. They were juicy and flavorful. There is a red salsa to put on the tortas which made it even better if that's possible. I took the remainder of the sauce home along with half my torta. Very filling and so good. The plaza itself looks a bit tired but who cares when the food makes up for it? Parking lot and street parking. Parking is tight and busy in the lot.

Yelp
Chicharron Prensado Quesadilla - listen just say yes! Thank me later! The flavor in the quesadilla de maiz alone will make you cry! Then you get to the meat and the green sauce with queso fresco on top and you're done. The salsa they bring to the table adds a little more spice to this extremely flavorful dish! The lime and lettuce add that freshness to it as well. I took a customer here for lunch today for the first time. From the time we walked in until the minute we walked out the service was awesome! We were greeted, seated, and treated so nicely! Muchas Gracias! We will be back!

Yelp
If you want to get very tasty and generously stuffed tortas, this is the place for you. This place is a favorite of my husband's. I've never had tortas before, so this was my first experience having them. I ordered the Pancho Villa torta with a side of beans and hubby ordered the Del Rey torta with a side of crinkle potato chips, and both sandwiches were delicious! They also serve a dipping sauce that was excellent and slightly spicy. I loved how quick the service was, and the server was very nice and accommodating. Everyone was friendly even the chefs behind the counter. Thanks to my husband, now I can recommend this place to friends and family!

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood and researched Los Reyes De La Torta. Nice place, I can see why the reviews are positive. Was guided to a great torta. Bread was fresh and the fillings fantastic. If I lived closer, this would be a regular spot.

Tiffanie Z.

Yelp
We were refers to this place. We wanted to try something we never had before and was authentic and home aid. This place is behind that so good you can tast the fresh ingredients and love in the food and that is so hard to find these days staff was so nice and family oriented we will be coming back here to try more for sure.

Jere V.

Yelp
Without the food was wonderful, serving staff was very helpful as they brought out the food and interacted with you during the dining experience and the ambience was nice what I was expecting at this Mexican restaurant.

Yelp
Delicious food, fairly priced. I thought we would order to go but glad we decided to be seated. It wasn't super busy and we were helped pretty quickly. We ordered the carne asada tacos, cheese enchiladas with green sauce and king asada tacos. Everything tasted super fresh. The enchiladas were the cheesiest I've ever had and we took home tons of food. The restaurant is very clean, a few tv's inside, and the parking lot fills up fast! Will be back!

Yelp
Been going here for over 15 years. The place keeps getting better, the staff is getting friendlier, and the food is consistently the best Mexican food I've tried in Phoenix throughout their whole menu.

Yelp
We went here for my boyfriend's mom's birthday per her request and WOW! I did not expect to rate this 5 stars, in other words I did not have super high expectations but the food was amazing, prices were beautiful and the service was so friendly. Our server spoke Spanish (my boyfriend's family also speaks Spanish) but understood everything I was saying of course. The food was seriously so good including the alambre, tortas and green enchiladas. I can't confirm gluten free status but corn tortillas were an option and that's good enough for me. Will be back!
google avatar

Sabrina G.

Yelp
The food was amazing and the service was friendly and quick! Such delicious tortas and chilaquiles. Love the amount of non alcoholic drink options there are too
google avatar

Diana B.

Yelp
Place is dirty. Infested with roaches. We walked out. Food was not cooked properly, no one wearing gloves, touching foods with hands
google avatar

Nicole C.

Yelp
These tortas are MONSTERS but in a good way! I ordered the Del Rey torta and it was so delicious, just way too big for me to finish. But I was so excited to eat my leftovers that I ate it for breakfast the next day :D

Yelp
Overall rating: 4/5 Wait: 4.5/5 Arrival time: Saturday 1pm takeout Food: 4/5 Order: Regular Torta Del Rey, Tostada De Ceviche Grande Service: n/a takeout Price: 4/5 Worth it, would come back If you're seeking a truly satisfying Mexican meal, look no further than Los Reyes De La Torta. Their Torta Del Rey and Tostada De Ceviche Grande are simply outstanding. The torta, a substantial sandwich packed with flavorful ingredients, is more than enough for two people. The ceviche, on the other hand, is a refreshing and zesty appetizer that perfectly complements the hearty torta. Both dishes are expertly prepared and bursting with authentic Mexican flavors. If you're in the area, I highly recommend giving this place a try. You won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I go here to get unique Sonoran food. their claim to fame is the tortas (sandwiches). The food is always served in large portions and we usually have to take a doggy bag when leaving. it's in a small older strip mall and not necessarily a fine dining experience but it is clean. obviously it's the food that's the star here. Service is great and they are very friendly.Everyone I've taken there is amazed at the taste of the food. one of my go to places.

LiL R.

Yelp
We were a family of out of towners looking for yummy food. Based off reviews and location, came to check this place out. Amazing guacamole. No liquor but long menu of virgin mixed drinks. Huge quesadillas and delicious tacos. Very fast service too. Recommend!

Yelp
I used to eat here 15 years ago regularly because my car mechanic was across the street and I always wait for the repair because I don't have a ride. So I come to Los Reyes de la torta and order the same thing which is the corn quesadilla filled with Head meat. But here we are at least 10 years later and the price is no longer $9.95 with a guacamole and sour cream topping included. Today just the topping alone now costs an extra $4 and it's $20 if I got the topping. So I ordered the corn quesadilla without the topping to save money. It was still delicious but my mechanic passed away a year and a half ago and I was only in the area because I was seeing that 365 dentist next door for a free consult for an implant. I probably won't be eating at Los Reyes de la Torta anymore I tried making the corn tortilla quesadilla at home and it was delicious. The service was adequate not outstanding but very sufficient but I guess they lost my enthusiasm because the price went so high which isn't their fault. But I made very little money in my life and it matters to me how much I spend. Anyhow here below is the picture of the fried corn quesadilla and it has a head meat in it which is very oily and fatty and it's without the drizzle of sour cream and guacamole. It's still my favorite thing on the entire menu.

Yelp
This place is bigger than it looks and is pretty spacious inside. There is no alcohol, which after a stressful day made me sad that I couldn't order a margarita. However, my sadness was definitely gulped away with every sip of my chocolate esquimos. It was creamy, delicious, and not overly sweet. The end had a cinnamon-y heavenly chocolate-y taste that Willy-Wonka himself would be proud of. The food itself was good. The cheese quesadilla was perfectly warm and cheesy. Add the hot sauce for the extra kick in flavor, and it is perfect. My mom ordered the peluche, which went with her keto diet, and filled her up. She said it was the 1st wholesome filling meal she had all day. I ate her beans and rice, which I was contemplating on ordering a bucket to go because I had never had such light, fluffy, and flavorsome rice before. I also had the asada HUARACHES, which was good. Oddly enough, it didn't carry much flavor even though it has the tortilla, green chili sauce, beans, cheese, and asada. So that made me a little sad. But with every sad bite, I took a sip of my happy drink, and all was right in the universe again. Overall... I personally don't think I'll be back for food, but I will probably visit the Tempe location for that drink.

Yelp
We had the quesadilla de maiz en estilo Los Reyes. It was hot, cheesy, and tasty. I want to return for a torta but this massive corn tortilla quesadilla is bomb.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Fantastic green chili chicken enchiladas! Great serving size for what you pay, and they're consistently good.

Yelp
La comida si esta muy buena pero el servicio no me agradó. Me sentaron y me dejaron un buen rato. Llego una familia y los atendieron de inmediato y después a mi. No regresare

Yelp
Okay so neighborhood isn't the best and the parking lot is tiny but it's packed for a reason. The food is fantastic and fast and the salsa they provide is tasty and not overly spicy. The service is fast and good, the inside isn't bad at all considering the outside.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best Mexican food in town With friendly staff Very clean And all foods are delicious Recommend it to everybody

Yelp
We helped our daughter relocate from San Diego to Phoenix and chose Los Reyes based on the Yelp reviews. It's about 10-11 minutes from her apartment. It is located in a small strip mall dedicated to Hispanic tastes including the restaurant and sister bakery next door. Not much to look at outside. Once inside, basic tables on both sides of the kitchen. You are seated and taken care of by a server, in our case a young man. We were surprised that they do not serve alcohol. My wife and daughter ordered tacos and I had the shrimp salad. All was delicious. Service was OK, sometimes taking a while for our server to get back to us. But he was very pleasant. Their checks give your the ability to scan and pay at the table, which I think is a nice feature. We would definitely come back!
google avatar

Vera F.

Yelp
Service was horrible and the food was average! I definitely will not be returning! Or they should be trained to treat other ethnicities with respect when entering their restaurant.
google avatar

Neal D.

Yelp
Excellent food! Excellent service! Luv this place, check my pics out, great drinks and Tortas, quesadillas were excellent!
google avatar

Ali B.

Yelp
This place is a hole in the wall with super fast service and is nicer than you'd expect inside! We were seated right away even though it was somewhat busy. They don't have any alcohol which is no big deal but something to know before visiting! We started off with a cheese quesadilla, it came out fast and was served with red and green salsa. The quesadilla was really good and I liked both salsas! I got the vegetarian tacos. I did find a few pieces of meat in them I had to pick out which grossed me out a bit, they should probably not have listed these under a section labeled "vegetarian". The beans and rice were pretty good! My husband enjoyed his carne asada tacos but wasn't super impressed with the rice. Overall a good meal though and the servers were awesome.
google avatar

Tonya J.

Yelp
The service provided was excellent, and she showed great patience with our sizable group. We enjoyed everything we ordered, though the fundido was a bit disappointing as it resembled a solid piece of warm cheese rather than a dip. Don't miss out on trying one of their freshly squeezed juices!

Lindsey B.

Yelp
The tortas were amazing! We had the torta norteña and it was so yummy! Service was fast too.

Amber D.

Yelp
They need to make the orders correct. I was disappointed when I received my food that was done incorrectly. The people working there need to learn the menu to know what they need to be serving.
google avatar

Valerie G.

Yelp
This place is pretty small but nice and clean. Their salsas are soo good if you like spice. I wanted to take them home. However, when we got there, everything was precooked and sitting in containers. I got the Al pastor tacos, which were good, but greasy. The porn was also very fatty. The quesadilla with Al pastor was good too, but same issues. Overall, the food is decent, better Mexican food than what's around Scottsdale, but still not amazing.
google avatar

Dan A.

Yelp
Legit authentic Mexican restaurant. Service, food, and ambiance was good. I had the torta chicken. A bit greasy but flavorful. I also had the tilapia tacos - I liked this better than the torta. Nice flavor, fish was not dry and not too messy. Price was reasonable as well.
google avatar

Miles S.

Yelp
Great spot we found on google and the bakery next door was legendary. Definitely get their drinks (they're healthy) and also the burritos are fiya! Definitely a fan of the tortas and recommend y'all to stay eatin here, casual vibes!
google avatar

Bryan A.

Yelp
Food here was great, inside the restaurant is very clean and service was good too! It was the first time trying it out and my wife and I already said we are going back again.

Mindi C.

Yelp
The food is amazing, the service and experience is also worth the visit. I put this as my #1 in Phoenix for authentic
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
I used to love this place. But what a disappointment, decided to take family here, but it will be my last. Food was decent Service = really bad Had to ask twice for waters Had to get up to get my own napkins Flies inside No grilled jalapeño on a dish that usually gets it. They have 1 bathroom for a restaurant that has a big capacity Vampiro drink was brought to me warm...asked for ice I usually like to give good tips but that would encourage lazy work. It's sad when they could be so much better. 3 things make a great restaurant Cleanliness Great food And good service
google avatar

Eldad S.

Yelp
I actually was quite disappointed with this restaurant. I've been travelling a lot and I've always eating a Mexican restaurants. The were extremely oily Which is fine The rice had corn in it, so it's a problem for some people Also, the guacamole was extremely spicy and you had no other options, for example, guacamole, without jalapeños What really disappointed me and surprised me was that the orange juice wasn't freshly squeezed there. It was just coming from a carton probably from Safeway. And they did not ask me what type of beans I would like they gave me what they had refried beans. Very strange. I mean I did like the atmosphere of the place but it wasn't great. Mexican and I was kind of surprised because I came there because of the ratings I hate writing negative reviews, but I'm starting to think that those reviews are mostly fake .
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
They don't answer their phone and then I show up just to be ignore by 3 employees. Then they help the person who got here after me and continue to help them while they kept me waiting. My office used to get lunch here once a week but lately their customer service is lacking. They always forget to do "estilo el Rey", they never compensate the $4 when they forget and now they don't answer their phone, either. Safe to say my office will no longer be coming here.
google avatar

S H.

Yelp
The absolute best, freshest, most delicious sandwiches in town. Service is always great, and everyone is always smiling.
google avatar

Monique G.

Yelp
The place was modernized, clean, and organized on the inside. The outside is hard to find since it is located in a corner. The staff were very kind and diligent with customer service. The waiter for my table always refilled our drinks and checked up on us to make sure everything was going well. The carne asada tacos were tender and juicy, but could have used a little more flavor. However, it was a great surprise to see how stuffed these tacos were! The pinto beans were flavorful and smooth- so delicious! The rice didn't have that much flavor but paired well with the beans. The torta was messy and juicy in the best way possible. The spices and seasonings used definitely made the torta a star dish. I would love to come back and try the sandwich too.
google avatar

Ray G.

Yelp
Would I come back? NO! The food was okay but definitely not worth returning due to the poor customer service. The restaurant itself is nicely decorated and clean, but the staff does not make it welcoming at all. They seem like we were a bother. I asked for an iced water but got absolutely no ice. The water was served at room temperature. I asked for a coke and that too was at room temperature. Then they seemed confused as to why I asked for cups of ice and again made me feel as if I was a bother. The waitress did not once come to our table to check on us or offer refills. Over all, the customer service- or lack of was what made my first experience not a great one.

Food is great better than expected and very generous portions , service is great as well , ambiance can be crowded on the weekends specially

Yelp
Here we were on a Monday afternoon looking for a place to sit down and eat. Los Reyes De La Torta was open when a few of our go to places were closed. When you read that this place is a hidden gem they are not kidding. I had to have my son guide me as this place is hidden even though it faces 7th Street, plus I had forgotten how tight the parking is to get in. This was my second visit here and upon entering the place looked different than I remember, for it looks smaller from the outside than it is inside. We were greeted by one of the servers as soon as we walked in and were taken to our table. We immediately noticed that this restaurant expended since we were last here and there is plenty of seating. Their menu is quite extensive, with choices from their breakfast menu to their dinner menu. They also have a kids menu. Since we were just wanting to spend some time with our son we opted to order from the appetizer menu but both my son and I had to have an Horchata to drink with our Quesadillas. This restaurant has everything for the hungry, from tacos, chilaquiles, mariscos to every kind of torta to flavor your taste buds. The service is great and we will certainly return to try other dishes. Just don't let the location deter you from coming here. They do have excellent food and provide a good service to their customers.
