Los Tios Mexican Restaurant Returns After Being Shuttered By Hurricane Harvey - Eater Houston

"After spending the last four months repairing damage from Hurricane Harvey, Los Tios Mexican Restaurant is back. The restaurant will celebrate its grand reopening at 4840 Beechnut on Wednesday after months of remodeling. When Hurricane Harvey hit Houston, Los Tios was flooded with several feet of water, causing extensive damage to the 31-year-old restaurant. Owner Gary Adair mentions that employees were stranded during the storm and that proceeds from the reopening will go to affected employees. The reopening party is scheduled for Wednesday, January 27 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m." - Alaena Hostetter

Classic Tex-Mex Done Right Los Tios never disappoints. The chips and green salsa hit the table fast and set the tone—fresh, flavorful, and addicting. Their enchiladas and beef fajitas are always spot-on, packed with bold, comforting flavors. Service is consistently friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere is welcoming whether you’re dining with family or grabbing a casual lunch. It’s that old-school Tex-Mex feel with reliable quality and generous portions. A Houston staple that’s earned its reputation. Highly recommend!

Google
Really great place to bring family! We had just moved into the area and was looking for a good tex mex place to try and I came across Los Tios on Google and decided to try it out tonight for date night. We walked in around 6 o’clock and only had to wait about 10 minutes for a table. We let the hostess know it was our first time and the manager (Mag) nearby heard our conversation and introduced himself. When we sat down for dinner. He brought over a few surprises for us to try And was so courteous there was multiple staff walking around, making sure everything was going well and everyone was very friendly. Brayan our server was great! Our food came out really fast and we love it here chips and salsa is so good. We will definitely be back!

Google
We came here for lunch, showed up at about 12:15: I expected the place to be slow and really packed. The parking was difficult at this time of day, they did have a lot of people in there, but the food came out really quick. I ordered the Acapulco plate. The tamale and chili was excellent, the cheese enchilada was excellent, the refried beans were a little runny, The crispy taco was actually a puffy taco shell and it didn’t eat well, as soon as you started to eat it, it all broke apart and you had to eat it with a fork. The cheese puff was really tasty. Overall, I enjoyed this meal, however, the use of puffy taco shells on their tacos just doesn’t work. I question one of the staff about this and was asking about a regular taco shell. I was told that all their crispy tacos are of this form. it just doesn’t work. The bowl of chips they bring to the table are very thin and don’t hold up to the salsa. Both saulsas were very tasty, but had no heat. Overall, we had a good experience and I look forward to coming back to try other things. Just know that anything called a crispy taco is a puffy taco and you are going to have to use a spoon or a fork to eat it. This was my main complaint with this menu. Additionally, parking is very difficult, the restaurant is in a strip center, and it can be hard to find a place.

Google
The atmosphere here is really good, so ate the food and drinks. Prices are very reasonable and food quality is good. Our server was friendly. Food came out quick and sizzling. Love this place.

Google
Was a little hesitant to come to this location due to the reviews of servers being rude and they are not wrong! Came here on Tuesday with my two best girl friends and the moment we sat down we instantly felt a vibe that the server was in a mood. At first I wanted to give the server the benefit of the doubt since it was Tuesday. Upon ordering we felt rushed and when we wanted to order more drinks he was trying to hurry away. After we received our plates food was solid as always but when the server came back we were in the middle of eating and having a conversation when he rudely suggested the check. We told him no due to the fact we were still eating and yet he still brought it. Will not be returning to this location, buffalo speed way is where it’s at.

Google
This establishment is decent. While it doesn't offer the finest Mexican cuisine, the food is palatable. Its appeal lies in the ambiance and the affordable prices, especially compared to establishments like Pappasitos or Guadalajara. The tortillas appeared to lack freshness and did not seem homemade, and the salsa served with chips was relatively unremarkable. The beef fajita burrito was satisfactory but did not stand out as exceptional or extraordinary. It was, simply put, good. For those pursuing top-notch authentic Mexican dining, it might be wise to look elsewhere. However, if convenience and reasonable quality are your priorities, this spot is a solid choice. I fall into the latter category; if I'm in the mood for decent Mexican fare without venturing too far, I would consider returning.

Google
We were wondering how we have never come to this place before. The food, service and atmosphere were all splendid and couldn’t ask for a better Friday night dinner after shopping at Meyerland plaza. The Chips with dip were so crunchy and fresh. We order the chicken fajita 1/2 pound and it was plenty enough for 2 people. The food has an authentic style cook and the corn tortillas looked like it was made fresh. I highly recommend this place for a fun family Mexican restaurant dinner.

Google
This place was the favorite restaurant close to my nephews' house and was their favorite place as kids. They came to town for the holidays and of course wanted to visit. Food quality is very good and service got quite an improvement. Kids said it is not the same. They still have the yummy green salsa!

Yelp
The Los Tios Meyerland location has been our go to neighborhood Mexican Food Restaurant for nearly five decades. If you like what they have to offer, which we obviously do, then you will never be disappointed, because the food preparation, ambiance and service are all remarkably consistent - in a good way. Clearly many others agree, because though there are some days and times when it's less crowded than others, many times there is a wait list of loyal patrons. Even that seems less of an imposition than an opportunity to people watch and renew acquaintances.

Yelp
Can't figure out why there aren't more 5 star reviews for this place. I used to come here as a kid with my mom and grandma, but we quit going after she passed away. 10 years later and we finally made our way back. We weren't sure what to expect as far as quality, but we were absolutely blown away. The food was delicious. We came for lunch and it was pretty busy. The salsa is phenomenal and we enjoyed the iced tea as well. We ordered off the lunch menu - pick two items for $10.95. I ordered a cheese enchilada and a queso puff. You also get rice and beans with it. We also wanted guacamole so we ordered a small order on the side. Great fla!! We will definitely be returning.

Yelp
Service, atmosphere, & food is excellent for Tex Mex lunch on the go! Green & red salsas were fresh, delicious, & waters & chips were refilled! Thank you Los Tios!

Yelp
This place is a classic. Love their chips and salsa. Place is always packed during peak hours. Food is always consistent.

Yelp
So I stopped in yesterday for the first time a few minutes after the lunch special was over. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and I received my meal just under 10mins. Everything was delicious. Presentation was great. Service was even better. The food was hot right down to the last bite. Packed with plenty of flavor and didn't taste salty at all. Plenty of indoor space, not crowded and the location is easy to find. The price was very reasonable. I'll be back to work my way through the menu.

Yelp
Los Tios is my boyfriend and I's go to place for good Mexican food. To me the portions are perfect and I like that they offer combos without rice and beans for around $11-12 dollars. The cheesy puff is chefs kiss! Service is fast and the staff is always super friendly. This restaurant is always busy weekends around dinner time but wait time is usually less than they say it will be.

Yelp
Incredible fajitas! We loved the veggie ones. Great friendly service. Delicious homemade tortillas.
google avatar

Hugo A. G.

Yelp
Favorite spot for skinny spicy margaritas and they use casa migos which is amazing. It's always consistent and service is always great. It's a bit busy during dinner but if you come at 8pm and on it's clear and ready to enjoy
google avatar

Yelp
The food (verde enchiladas) is AMAZING! The margaritas are AMAZING! They have however become WAYYYY too popular and trendy and can not properly manage a wait list. We have visited several times recently - probably three times within the last month, each time on a Friday night at approximately 5-530pm and have been told it would be "20 minutes" which turned out to be 40-50 minutes EVERY time. They have great food, great service, great ambiance (maybe could fix the lighting in the back), but I am done with this place until it becomes less trendy. I don't know when it became cool to eat dinner at 5pm. I'm a curmudgeon, and proud. UPDATE FOR MANAGER RESPONSE : I DID call prior to going, and was told no wait. Magically, when I arrived, it was "20 minutes". Everything is cyclical, I'll just wait til there is a location with less congestion, or it's less popular. I appreciate your response.

Yelp
We love Los Tios! We go often and the food is always delicious and the staff courteous.

Yelp
Visited here for a large Houston grandmother's reunion. The place is nice and clean. Arrived and told we could have coffee but there wasn't enough to go around. They sat us at our area and took our drink orders that never arrived for a lot of us. The service was very slow and inconsistent. Drinks ordered were not brought out after requesting them again. Had to drink water. Ordered coffee at the table and they said they ran out of cups. WTH? No cups?? Food smelled good but not the best. The flour tortillas looked and smelled amazing. I personally would not choose to go back. Not worth the money spent. They forgot to give me a ticket for my food and I asked them for it just because I'm honest.

Yelp
Delicious food and fabulous service! We weren't the easiest customers with a baby and preschooler in our party, but the staff amazingly smiled and interacted with the children. Specializes in a puffy cheese dish that was delicious. Family ambiance. Very reasonable prices

Yelp
My niece begs to have me take her to Los Tios each time she visits. The street tacos are her favorite thing in the menu but all the food is delicious. Great decor and service too. Big kudos to the staff for always making it a fun experience.

Yelp
I love Los Tios and usually go to the one on Westheimer. It's quick service, tastes like true Tex-Mex, and the people are always friendly. You get a real bang for your buck here with the Texas sized portions. I usually go for the enchilada plate (comes with your rice, guac, pico, your choice of beans). The chips and salsa are standard. I like the charro beans bc there's more flavor than refried. Los Tios definitely has one of the better rices than other spots in town.

Yelp
Great food and good prices. Consistent for years and years! Fantastic margaritas. I have had the quinoa bowl the last few times I've eaten there and have loved it every time

Yelp
While out and about in Houston today with my fam, my travels brought me in the vicinity of a Los Tios. Nostalgia overcame me, and I was very giddy. Yes, I did say giddy. The wife and kiddos wanted something from another chain restaurant, so after some convincing, I changed their minds. Los Tios has been around Houston for a very long time, and I have very fond memories with my grandparents here as a child. It has been decades since I have stepped foot in one, so I was hoping nothing had changed. The fam and I walked in the lobby. This place is exactly as I remember it. Not a thing has changed. Today the restaurant was not busy, and no one was at the front host stand. I was hoping this was not a bad sign. After peeking around the corner to get someone's attention, a waiter saw me and promptly seated us. We were seated in a booth, and handed menus. Our drink orders were taken, and we perused the menu. Lots of good choices here. While we waited for our drinks we were brought chips, salsa, and tomatillo sauce. One thing that will tell you right away if a Mexican food joint is any good is the chips and salsa. The chips set the tone for me, and if they are terrible, I'm out. I got a chip, dunked it in the salsa, took a bite, and was impressed. They taste just the same as they did last time I went! In good time, our drinks arrived and our order was taken. The wife opted for the chicken street tacos and I opted for combo #3. A puffy queso, a cheese enchilada, guacamole salad, and a side of rice and beans. The kiddos got a grilled cheese, and puffy queso. After some trips down memory lane with my kiddos, our food arrived in good time. Nice and hot and presented very well. All of us starved, we jumped right in. The kiddos loved their food (and my youngest says their grilled cheese was the best) and mine was delicious. I really enjoyed my puffy queso and was glad to see it was puffy, and not just a taco salad chip turned over with queso on it. My enchilada was great, and regretted not getting two. The guacamole was a bit too tangy and had too much lime in it. Still, not bad though. I cleaned my plate. The wife was not too impressed with the chicken street tacos and said they lacked flavor. She said they were bland and she wished she ordered something else. Overall, we all were happy and satisfied. My dish was excellent and I left very happy. The next time I make it to Houston I will be back. I highly recommend Los Tios. If you are ever over this way, please stop in and give it a try! Enjoy

Yelp
Went by this restaurant quite a few times and never stopped in, but after being badly disappointed across the street from a neighboring business called becks prime. I was very hungry and this was very close so I stopped in to give them a chance and the food and service was absolutely both top-notch and amazing! Tacos are so good!

Yelp
This is starting to become my go to for Tex Mex! It is so busy here during dinner time, even before 5 pm the wait was half an hour. But I feel it's worth it. Chips and salsa are solid- both the red and green dips that come to your table are delicious. Tacos Al carbon is so delicious and food came out really fast, less than 5 minutes after ordering. The tortillas are freshly made and cooked perfectly. I prefer the beef to the chicken but both are good. I love that it comes with pico, guac, and a small thing of queso- all perfect compliments to the meat. Leaves me really full but very happy. Waiters are also great!

Ducky S.

Yelp
Not to glaze but servers were nice and taco was yummy also cool that a car crashed into it once and made a big ahh hole in it

Stephanie R.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! I did not realize how packed it got. We waited 20minutes for a party of two, and it felt like a long time, but it was worth the wait! We shared the chicken fajitas and that was plenty. We also had a watermelon and house margarita, both of which were so good! Will definitely come back
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
I love Los Tios! The margaritas are out of this world! The chips and salsa are delicious and don't get me started on the puffy queso! Whoever invented that is a genius! I love the array of options on the menu! It would be extremely helpful if the menu items that are gluten free and vegetarian were labeled. I am a vegetarian and I am gluten free so having the menu labeled would be great. I bet others who follow a vegetarian/gluten free diet would appreciate this as well! I will definitely continue to support Los Tios!

Yelp
what a great restaurant this is it's a Houston institution. If you're in the Meyerland area, you have to go here and eat. I always get the tacos. You can't go wrong.

Yelp
Great tex max fresh Crowded at lunch and dinner plan ahead avoid crowds All family enjoyed draftbeer strong margaritas

Yelp
I love Los Tios ! I have been going here since I was a kid with my grandmother and I'm 58 now ! I just went and had lunch with my friend on Friday and our server Bayran (Brian) was amazing first and foremost . His name tag was spelled different but Brian is how pronounced. Anyways ,Los Tios always has the best service . The food was amazing as usual and i still enjoy every bite I just simply love the place . I love their tamales , and try the Laredo plate for some yummy dinner ! We love the chicken fajitas as well because the chicken is white meat and flavor is beyond good ! Be sure to eat a tamale ! Actially you won't go wrong with anything there ! So to sum it up, phenomenal service and amazing food and great environment and friendly people so run to Los Tios!!

Yelp
Always go here! My family and I always go to Los Tios, and while the wait can be a bit long, it's so worth it! Such a pretty place with delicious food! I'd definitely recommend going here!

Yelp
Well, this is Tex-Mex catered to the palates of the older residents around here even if they are dying out. I went here 25 years ago, and the food still taste practically the same so there is value in consistency. I remember a Houston Press article in the 2000s that described the uproar from the customers when the chef had updated the queso recipe from a Velveeta base. I went here 7 months into the pandemic and was shocked at the number of geriatrics who had a death wish by eating out. They observed COVID requirements then and still do now even with vaccinations abound. The cheese enchiladas and its red sauce was so bland beyond the salt that I had forgotten how the cuisine has evolved at other restaurants. The spinach enchiladas is very rich on the other hand with its cream cheese sauce. The left over sauce goes well with the chips. The staff is entirely nice and the prices are very reasonable. Just don't expect anything too surprising in flavour.
google avatar

Thom C.

Yelp
Always festive with good, reasonably priced food and excellent service. Can be crowded on Thursday nights especially during happy hour.

Alexis L.

Yelp
The place looks good the restroom is clean and the customer service the food is good it pretty nice here the wait was not that long.
google avatar

Katrina C.

Yelp
Happy hour is until 7pm which is great for those of us that work past 5. Parking is very tricky. Bar area kinda small but great staff. The house Margarita will sneak up on you so be careful (lol). Had to get the beef quesadilla which was good, beef seasoned perfectly. The pickled jalapeños way better than the fresh ones if you want heat.

Rebecca F.

Yelp
It feels homey and comfortable. Lots of families here. Service is great. Food is very good. One of our fav places.
google avatar

Julaun T.

Yelp
The ambience is definitely giving authentic Mexican cuisine, but the food is very Tex Mex. This spot is perfect for a night out with friends, or somewhere to post up and watch the game. My favorite part was the margarita! They do not hold back lol
google avatar

Brenda A.

Yelp
Very busy for two in the afternoon that's a good sign. The complementary chips are the best I have had in Meyerland. Service was very fast and the food was so hot, physically not spicy. The spice was just right amount not at all over -powering. Got the frozen margarita after reading in menu the family introduced it to H town, was perfect and the pucker power was off the wall, you have to have one of these with your meal, make sure you get the frozen! I will be back more often.
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
Good and reliable food. True Tex mex joy! A meyerland tradition. Experienced wait staff attend your every need.
google avatar

Malek B.

Yelp
Food is great, as usual. What's up with slow service, place is 3/4 vacant at 2 pm... servers don't help each other out. If mine wasn't within eye sight, no luck landing a glass of water or extra salsa.
google avatar

Alexis D.

Yelp
Extremely disappointing service. I ordered Street Tacos and I'm just so confused how something so simple could be ruined with the quickness. They came out extremely COLD! Like they had been sitting out for at least 15 minutes it's honestly disappointing. I reported it to the manager. Because I'm not dumb, I knew he would stick them in the microwave because you can clearly taste the difference. He brought them back to me "fresh" but the taste was just awful. No seasoning, no excitement, just dull tacos. The tortilla was rubbery and chewy. I'm upset about it to say the least. Only pro about my time dining here is the great house margaritas. Full of liquor so if you're a lightweight, make sure you eat enough carbs to balance it out. All in all, I would not eat here again. Point, blank, period. Improvements need to be made.

Katian L.

Yelp
José Santos was a great waiter! Attentive and professional! Got the order right for a big group without any mistakes.

Yelp
Best Mexican Restaurant in Southwest Houston!!! Dirty windows too. Great location! Recommended
google avatar

Olicia W.

Yelp
Overpriced and food and service are lacking. Every few years or so I think, "They're in the area. Let me try them, again". Then, I'm reminded why I'd rather go out of the way to El Regio's (better flavor, larger portions for the same price) or Pappasito's (similar price point - but the flavor, portions, and service warrants it).

Cristina C.

Yelp
Food was delicious handmade tortillas and excellent service Good music and family ambience
google avatar

Stephanie Z.

Yelp
The word that comes to mind when I think of this restaurant's food is average. I got the beef enchilada plate, and everything on it was just ok. There wasn't really any red sauce on the enchiladas, which was disappointing to me but others might like that it's just cheese. The rice and beans were also mediocre. I did like the red salsa and chips, but I wasn't a fan of the green salsa (vs some other restaurants where the green salsa is crave worthy).
google avatar

Chantrelle G.

Yelp
I was invited to come out for drinks and this was a suggestion from a friend. We were greeted when we came in and the place decor is nothing exciting to see just your standard Tex Mex decor. We were seated after about 20 minutes and waited for a waiter to come by. He came by after about ten minutes and said he would be back. Five minutes later he came back and took our drinks and meal order. The service was super quick but the food was underwhelming. My friend had the chicken quesadilla but very few chicken was found in it. I had the snapper tacos and the fish was fried so hard all of it wasn't edible and definitely not seasoned. The sopapillas were ok when the glaze was placed on it. Service was just ok, management walked around smiling but seemed to have better customer service than staff. Two stars because of quick service and price.
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
We enjoyed a couple lunch specials. My wife had the tortilla soup and a salad, both were very good. I went with and enjoyed a cheese enchilada and a bee fajita taco, also a lunch special. Pick two items off the lunch menu, you have 8 choices, all of which come with rice and beans. She ordered a lunchie margarita and we ended up getting two, guess the waiter misheard our order....probably won't order one of these again.....too small for $5.99.

Clifford H.

Yelp
As a native HTX-er, I've been to the Beechnut location a hundred times. I don't expect greatness here...it's true, low-level TexMex fare. But tonight I had to ask my dinner buddy, "Did Adair sell this place to someone new?" (No) In short, cheese enchiladas were disappointing, along with the refrieds and rice. How can you mess up the most basic Tex-mex item on the menu? By undercooking a stale tortilla. I didn't finish it. Service was post-COVID slow. But hey, the placed was packed. Which is good, since I won't be back. There are too many better choices at the same price point.
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
I have lived near this place since I was a kid and unfortunately never tried eating here until most recently. I am sad that I missed out for so long because this is definitely one of my favorite Tex-mex places ever! I am a big lover of fajitas and their 1lb combo does not disappoint. Comes out sizzling and with a generous amount of onions and peppers. Beef and chicken were both marinated well and not over cooked. If I had to nitpick anything, it would be that I wish the homemade flour tortillas were thicker as these do run on the thinner end. Even then, I'll be frequenting here often. Service was really good and food came out lightning fast.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Zero stars would be more accurate. Came in on a rainy pouring Houston day. Tried to get in fast because of two kids. The greeter saw that we had 3 people and a baby. He sat us at a booth. We went a grabbed a high chair. It took us a minute with a baby to get her seated and situated. Then comes in the manager. The manger is horrible. The manager tells us sternly how we can NOT have a high chair at a booth. She doesn't say it nicely, she doesn't try and help. Just tells us NO HIGH CHAIR. We look at her like ok? Why no common decency? Why no kindness during the holidays? Please do better. Also we have the food two other times at this location. Nope. We will keep going to the one in beechnut. I've worked in customer service for 10 years. If someone acted like that, it would be addressed.

Yelp
Los Tios has been around my area of town for years! I used to eat at the original one on Fondren (now closed) and once in awhile at this Meyerland location. But seriously it has been years since I have eaten here. Last night I suggested Los Tios to a friend and we ended up eating here. We had a short 20 minute wait (for a Friday night, in Houston, that is not a long time). Finding a parking space is what took awhile, as the huge shopping center is super busy, with several restaurants located there. I was delighted with the friendly waiter, who truly took such good care of us. My friend said her margarita "packed a punch" so I know they don't skimp on the alcohol! I kind of laughed when she said she had never heard of a cheese puff - a Los Tios staple from day one - it's a tortilla puffed in the deep fryer topped with their delicious queso. YES you break into it with a fork, as it is puffed up! We both ordered the same combo meal - queso puff, guacamole salad and a chalupa It was very good and we both enjoyed it! Our waiter told us Los Tios now has 5 locations in and around Houston. He said they stay busy at this location, as they also offer daily lunch specials, during the week. I know I will be back in the near future - I am hoping I get the same waiter, because his service was exemplary!

Yelp
Got the chicken enchilada verdes dinner last night. Felt sick to my stomach then puked for twenty minutes straight. Disappointed to say the least. Will never go back.

Yelp
I do not know why it doesn't have 4 1/2 stars on yelp. Authentic Mexican restaurant to very nice people who were at the front one seemed like a manager. We saw the lady making fresh corn tortillas. I ordered steak Street tacos they were unbelievable they have a special salsa Verde that's very yummy and the chips are delicious and they have a cute authentic looking restaurant.
