16 Essential Tex-Mex Restaurants In Houston

"With more than 50 years in the Houston area and six locations, this family-owned restaurant has the reputation of offering what is billed the city’s first frozen margarita, plus Tex-Mex favorites, including its Katie’s t-sip dip — chile con queso topped with scoops of ground beef and guac — nachos, tostadas, fajitas, grilled proteins, and its famed puffy taco smothered in queso." - Brittany Britto Garley, Megha McSwain

Houston’s Best Food Trucks | Eater Houston

"Before opening its permanent location in West U, El Topo was a famed food truck that continues to make appearances at the Urban Harvest Downtown and Eastside Markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. After perusing the market’s many stalls, stop by for their signature Houston taco, chock full of barbacoa with an epazote aioli, and get a side of their griddled street corn." - Megha McSwain

This was an amazing little break during a hectic Saturday of shopping. Everything came together to provide us with a relaxing location to catch our breaths and recharge for the afternoon! The food was delicious, but more than that was our server, Niera. She was very attentive and made sure we were happy with everything. So happy we stopped in and found another great restaurant to visit in West University!

First time in there, very busy place, which is a good thing I presume! Margaritas on point, got the watermelon, yum! Quesadilla was delicious, served with guacamole and sour cream on the side. Chips & salsa served as soon as you sit down. It’s a bit loud in there, only reason for not 5 stars.

Love it here !! Ask for Karla A!!! She is full of energy and will make sure your dining experience is amazing from start to finish!! ❤️…🤩. #bestwaiterevahhh I couldn’t wait to come back and eat here. Everything is sooo good and the portions are generous. Margaritas are strong (bartenders know what they are doing!)…and the ambience is very traditional and authentic! Love it and will definitely be coming back .

10/10 I had such a great experience at the bar in Los Tíos restaurant! From the moment I sat down, the bartender Alicia made me feel welcomed and taken care of. The service was fast, friendly, and attentive without being overbearing. She really knew their drinks — I ordered a margarita, and it was honestly one of the best I’ve had. Perfectly balanced, not too sweet, and served with a smile. Alicia even recommended a tequila I’d never tried before, and it was amazing. What stood out most was the atmosphere — upbeat and lively, yet relaxed enough to enjoy a conversation. You can tell the staff truly enjoy what they do, and it shows in the quality of their service. Highly recommend sitting at the bar if you visit. And ask for ALICIA she will take care of you! Great drinks, great vibes, and genuinely great service. I’ll definitely be coming back!

Came to check out this location since we like the food at the other locations. The restaurant's decor is nice, plenty of space and doesn't feel crammed. We ordered a small chile con queso as an appetizer and it came out nice and hot. For our late lunch we ordered the beef tacos al carbon, the no. 8 combo and the meatless special with regular enchilada sauce. We love their puffy queso. All the dishes were tasty and the rice and beans were especially full of flavor. Our server Cindi was attentive, we will be back.

I came to Los Tios hoping to enjoy a nice meal, but unfortunately, the experience was a letdown from the start. The hostess didn’t greet us with a smile or any warmth, which set the tone. We were seated, and our waitress took our drink order. After waiting about 3 minutes, she returned with the drinks and said she’d give us a few minutes to look over the menu—but it actually took her at least 5 minutes to come back. We ordered nachos, and surprisingly, it took about 5–7 minutes just to get chips and salsa. The chips finally arrived, and shortly after, our food was brought out. I had to ask for more salsa, and once I did, our waitress disappeared. We finished our drinks and sat with empty glasses the rest of the meal—no refills, no check-in, and it wasn’t even busy enough to justify the delay. Eventually, she returned, but didn’t even ask if we wanted to-go drinks or refills. She just asked if we wanted a box—for three leftover nachos. We declined and asked for the check. Overall, the service was disappointing. I always like giving new places a chance, but I wouldn’t come back here again. The customer service just wasn’t there.

We had a farewell party with our friends. We were hosted by Elizabeth, whom provided a great experience and service for us all. She had a positive attitude and a smile throughout the evening. I thank her and the manager for their great farewell surprise at the end of the sitting. Amazing place to go to, with genuine service !

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Amazing experience at Los Tíos on Buffalo Speedway! The food was absolutely delicious — we ordered the parrillada and everything was cooked to perfection, from the juicy meats to the fresh guacamole and warm tortillas. Special shoutout to Alfredo, our server, who gave us excellent service and made us feel truly welcome. Great portions, beautiful presentation, and a cozy, authentic atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back!

Yelp
So good every time we go! One of our favorite places. Love their enchiladas, puffy queso, and tacos.

Yelp
I can't believe Buca di Beppo closed but Los Tios definitely fills the void for a place to host a large gathering. I love how spacious and inviting the inside was, especially the party room by the entrance where we were seated. We started the meal with a tortilla soup which was pretty tasty especially with the little chunks of avocado. We also had a basket of chips which were super tasty to go with the red and creamy salsa. Then once the buffet line was open to our party I was able to try their beef, chicken, beans, rice, tortillas and quesadillas. I could tell some of the beef was cooked more pink and opted to choose these which were quite tender. However my favorite thing here was actually the quesadillas! We had the shrimp and my favorite the spinach mushroom, which paired great with the salsa, queso, and guacamole! Service here was also fairly attentive as I was even able to ask for a plate of lettuce for my veggie fix and extra salsa which sadly went missing. However there was a ton of us so a bit more understanding.

Yelp
A lovely new location for Los Tios - the interior is huge and airy, perfect for large groups. We came for an early lunch on a Saturday and had no issue getting a table. They now serve breakfast/brunch on Saturdays and Sundays, so added bonus there if that is your thing. We had a fairly large table of 7 and our server did a nice job of taking our orders, keeping glasses filled, and ensuring we were happy without being too overbearing. Everyone was very happy with their meals - I ordered their chicken quesadillas and they were excellent and a huge portion. We will certainly be back. Parking: on site in large shopping center lot

Yelp
Got to try the new location for linch with my bride ! Los Tios is your typical Tex-Mex joint , owned by white folks making food for white folks, so spice is not in the equation . The combination plates could be better with a little tweaking, and the Queso is solid, but overall I was underwhelmed.

Yelp
Love this place and this location! Love the build your own puffy queso on the happy hour menu! They happily accommodate my dietary needs (vegetarian) when ordering a puffy queso or anything on the menu. The margaritas are out of this world. They are flavorful and strong! The breakfast on Saturday and Sunday is fantastic! This particular location is huge, colorful, and very welcoming! I come here a few times a month and am never disappointed!

Yelp
It is rare for me to give a restaurant a second chance after a subpar, disappointing experience, but after three additional visits to the West U location of Los Tios, I am happy to report this place (in my eyes) has improved tremendously. I especially liked the Anniversary nachos, which is a mixture of chicken and beef. Service has been really good. This was my main concern the first time around, but this is also one of the reasons I am giving a 5-star rating for subsequent visits during which the service was great. The rice, beans and chips/salsa have all been great too. I typically prefer the San Felipe location, but West U has grown on me lately.

Yelp
Great food. Great service and great drinks! I came on a Saturday afternoon for a bite and to watch a football game. Seated at the bar, and Leo did a great job serving!

Yelp
Good Mexican Food and Great Service, definitely coming back to this restaurant. Good decor, but the music is a bit loud.

Yelp
Ordered take-out- online which was easy. However, food was cold. Enchiladas Verde, refried beans was meh but rice was tasty. Chips were thin and salsa was good. Came with guacamole and dollop of sour cream. This new location was the old Buca de Beppo so there's ample pkng.

Yelp
We are beyond impressed by the quality of food, top notch service, modern interior decor, and overall ambiance of this place! We tried the original puffy queso, you can't come here without trying this famous dish. It's an interesting concept, if you haven't had it before, definitely give it a try. There's not much to it if you don't have it stuffed with meat, but it's fun to try. We also had: Meatless Special (comes with the original puffy queso, guacamole salad, cheese enchiladas and rice and beans) Tex Mex combination: it has everything you need for a classic Tex mex dinner. Taco al carbon topped with chile con queso, crispy beef taco, and a cheese enchilada. Beef quesadilla meal with rice and beans. Meat is tender, great flavor. Everything is phenomenal. Come here during Happy Hour, get their $5 frozen margaritas (size is great and it's strong). We had a great experience here, our bellies are very happy too!

Yelp
I was keen to check out this place, stepping in to fill the shoes of the tasty Bucca De Beppo that used to be here. First off, the revamp is impressive - the bright and spacious setting feels welcoming. The place was packed, and we waited around 25 minutes to be seated. The staff was pleasant, and the chips and salsa kept us happily munching while our food arrived. However, I was disappointed to find my quesadillas served on a cold plate, causing my meal to cool down too quickly. On the other hand, my friend's dish was piping hot, and she even burned her hand when she touched it. It was a stark contrast - after eating for about 20 minutes, her food was still steaming when packed away, while my cheese had hardened due to the cold. She enjoyed her meal despite its high temperature, while my lukewarm fare was just passable. We're willing to try it again someday, hoping for a better experience next time that would warrant a higher rating. But I won't be the one picking the venue for sure.

Yelp
I love the chalupa! Glad I chose it over the crispy taco for the lunch plate to accompany my usual cheese enchilada! The chalupa started with their crispy corn tortilla with taco beef, beans, lettuce, tomato, & cheese! It was easier to eat than their crispy taco (which is also delicious but messy) because I cut and ate it with the fork. I really really liked it and will order it every time I dine at Los Tios! The salsas are good, nothing stands out about them. The chips were okay, I can't put my finger on what is different. Great lunch menu where you pick two items that come with rice and beans for $10.95! I will be back often!

Yelp
Was so happy with brunch that we went 2 Sundays in a row, and brought family from out of town, excited to show them the menu and indoor ambiance. Effort was put into the festive decor and indoor architecture, service is friendly, and food is fresh and delicious. Got the Chilaquiles con Pollo y Crema both times it was so good! The Huevos Rancheros is yummy as well just not pictured. There are a lot of breakfast tacos options and they are simple yet savory, if you have a picky child the bean and cheese one is a good try. Loved that the pancake stack actually comes with maple syrup and are nice and fluffy. Michelada mix is also sooo good!

Yelp
The food always hits the spot here. One of my favorite spots for their green salsa, green enchiladas, fajitas, and margs - not much I don't really like here. They are always so friendly, and the new location is gorgeous!

Yelp
Check out this new location on West University and if you are familiar with the area then this was used to be Buca di Peppo. The new renovation looks nice. Food wise was OK, honestly I had better TeX-Mex elsewhere in Houston. They have a very good lunch price menu on weekdays if you want to try. It's hard to beat $10.99 price these days. I tried their famous puffy queso , it was also OK, can't say I will be back for that. Staffs are friendly and the ambiance is nice.

Yelp
My go-to Tex-Mex place is Valencia's but I saw that Los Tios had opened in the area so I decided to stop by for dinner. Upon getting seated, we were immediately brought chips and two types of salsa; The red salsa was good but the green one was a little bland. I ordered the Acapulco Dinner plate because I wanted to try a bit of everything and my partner got the Golden Tacos plate. Our food came out super fast, like within 5-10 minutes. I was unaware that the Acapulco plate came in 2 different plates at separate times so I was confused when I only received one plate at first. Onto the food: The puffy queso which they are apparently known for was okay at best, while the guacamole salad was weirdly sour. I actually liked the beef taco but the taco meat was pretty greasy. It was also hard to eat and the shell quickly shattered into various pieces, I was kind of eating a taco salad at that point. The tamale was dry and I wasn't a fan of the cheese enchilada because the filling tasted like Velveeta to me. The plate came with a choice of beans and I went with the charro beans. This was probably my favorite thing from this plate. The service was very quick and friendly but I wish the quality of the food matched.

Yelp
I may have a came a little to early to this new location, since I believe it open early June. Everything was just okay, like the experience wasn't memorable and neither was the food. We started off the tequila mockingbird & Mexican martini. The tequila mockingbird was spicy and refreshing. A nice summer drink. The Mexican martini reminded me up a tequila sunrise. Too much orange juice and didn't give a martini feel. The food was just okay. The fish tacos with flour we just okay. The tacos were dry and missing something to take the tacos to the next level. The chicken enchiladas were burnt, as you can see from the picture so it made the dish more chewy & crunchy than cheesy and soothing.

Yelp
Karla is an absolutely incredible server who made our meal exponentially better. She made perfect recommendations, and told us all sorts of mouthwatering details about the food as we ordered and enjoyed it. Our meal was outstanding, but the food was upstaged by Karla's knowledge and sense of humor. Highlights of the meal were café de olla and grilled red fish Veracruz.

Marc B.

Yelp
Great Tx Mex place. We love the new design! The food/drinks are fresh and amazing!! Our server Madia was so nice, welcoming and helpful! We will definitely be back soon!!

Yelp
Food was amazing, Leo was our server he did a great job with such a large group. The ambiance around the bar during happy hour was a vibe.

Yelp
I was invited to a gathering there. I'm glad they offered separate checks. We were served green and red salsas and chips that are not greasy. Jose M. was a great waiter. This new Los Tíos is beautiful and ample. I ordered spinach quesadillas on corn tortillas. They were really good and served with guacamole and sour cream. I signed up for rewards as Los Tíos is owned by the Adair group and supposedly you can get points by dining at Betsy's and Adair Kitchen.

Yvette B.

Yelp
The place is beautiful. Food subpar. However you do not ask the parents to control their kids. You have them running in circles to the bathroom and to the front to get candies. I tell the hostess and she says nothing. I ask her for the manager. She has the nerve to say they are all in the back in a meeting. I asked her to get one and a kid about the age of 18 comes out. I tell him that the kids are all running amok and how the hostess is just standing there when they run in circles grabbing the andies mints. He says he will let her know what she can and can't do. I me what a rude kid. Do you not hire any adults to keep the place in order. It is a mad house with all those kuds running.
google avatar

Vinh N.

Yelp
I'm glad this location opened up in the old vestiges of Beppo. It seems more open and brighter than the previous restaurant. Same could be said about how it compares to its original Meyerland location too. Just a more modern vibe and a slightly younger clientele. The Tex-Mex is pretty good. It seems less salty than the original location, but the only spice you can really find is still in the red salsa. Portions are large, and the prices are fair compared to some of its competitors nearby. The spinach enchiladas are good and so are the spinach and mushroom quesadillas. I think this will be the default Tex-Mex spot if I want to order through the delivery apps.
google avatar

Shatoyia N.

Yelp
I love the new location. It has become our weekly spot. They have $5 margaritas on Monday. Food is great and the prices are reasonable. The bartenders are awesome!
google avatar

Jackie K.

Yelp
We enjoyed our fajita lunch at Los Tios! It's a very kid-friendly spot with plenty of seating and good Mexican food. The combo chicken and fajitas plate was tasty--I really liked it. The order only comes with three tortillas, so we had to ask for extra tortillas on the side. The margaritas were great too (and reasonably priced)--they had a smaller lunch version of the margaritas, which was fun. Overall, it's a great spot for Mexican food, particularly with kids. It still doesn't beat my favorite El Tiempo, but El Tiempo is hard to beat!
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Frozen Margaritas served in warm glasses = runny margaritas. Salad served in warm salad bowls = warm salad.
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
I went to this location for the first time and either the first or second time ever going to a Lost Tios restaurant to begin with. I ordered the Chicken Enchiladas Meal with Spanish sauce togo tonight before heading to Dessert Gallery just minutes away. The meal was very delicious, fresh and satisfying. I didn't care for the refried beans being too smooth and not chunky, but the rest was very good. The enchiladas were very tasty and soft with a good red sauce, cheese, corn wraps and moist, tender shredded chicken. The overall taste of the enchiladas was well-prepared and seasoned imo. The rice with the rest was good stuff too. Very comforting Tex Mex meal. Great, friendly service. I will order their Nachos next time I come.

Yelp
Could not wait for this location to open!!!! It was fantastic!!!! Our server, Nello, was so nice, as was everyone else! The food and margaritas were delicious! We went early as we knew it would get crowded. The decor is beautiful, it is spacious, and a great addition to the neighborhood!!!
google avatar

Michele W.

Yelp
Been here 2X within a month. The first time was with my ladies group followed by visiting family. Both times the food was fantastic. I had quail the first time, so delicate, tasty & moist. Second time I'd pulled pork fajita style & it was very yummy. My grandkids loved my pork dish too. We shared the large guacamole, quite good but I would've liked it less blended & with some chunks of avocado. Service was helpful & friendly but a bit slow second time. We will return! This is now my top fave Mexican restaurant in Houston! Great location, fun decor but noisy.
google avatar

Divina O.

Yelp
We done here weekly for brunch. Love the new location it's big and clean. Staff is friendly . Carlos probably knows us by now. We really enjoy the food and the quick services . Kids menu is great . Food in general is just good for Tex med
google avatar

Patrick S.

Yelp
Ordered via app and received the wrong order! Lol. The food was still very good and we even got a Mexican coke. Very consistent, tasty, "Casa Bonita" style Tex-Mex. Will order again.
google avatar

Carolina B.

Yelp
Love having another great option close to home (West U)! Our server was so so nice! We brought our children and they ate everything off their plates. Had some margaritas that were incredible. I myself had the taco salad--it was very fresh, large, and the sheep was unbeatable. However, they must've not even put 2 ounces of chicken fajita meat (extra up charge), so that was my only disappointment. Had tres leches for dessert, which was heavenly and plentiful.
google avatar

Larry M.

Yelp
Food: We had the fish tacos. Pretty good; the tilapia was breaded with seasoning which added some taste to the usually bland fish. The corn tortilla was large and thick and held together well, while adding generous carbs to the meal. But don't go there for the charro beans that we elected. This was a thin bean soup. I'd estimate I fished from the entire serving maybe 18 individual beans and an equal number of jalapeno slices. Service: quite good. Well trained staff and prompt service. Ambiance: Noisy, bustly place, so don't expect what we cherish: quite dining.
google avatar

Yelp
Karla was an amazing server. Friendly and helped talk through some of their unique dishes. Great people and great food at a great price!
google avatar

Yelp
Super hot dishes and prices are fair. I eat here 3-4 times per week. Just had their breakfast omelette it was amazing.

Andrea D.

Yelp
Karla is the best waitress. So kind and sweet. She is the best!!!! Great food and great service. One of your favorite Mexican restaurants In Houston!!!!

Bill L.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst service I have ever experienced. Food was served before they even gave us water and chips. Asked 4 times for a refill on iced tea. Asked 2 different people for a To Go box and then still never received until I asked a third. Music was much too loud for a restaurant. Post script : when I told my concerns to the people at the front desk, they comped our appetizers which I appreciated but I do hope they review the importance of SERVICE with the staff as that is what people remember as much as the food!
google avatar

Tocus T.

Yelp
While the ambiance and friendliness of the waiter added a pleasant touch to my dining experience, the overall meal fell short of expectations. The crispy tacos, although creative with boat-shaped shells, made for a messy eating ordeal. Unfortunately, the temperature of the dishes leaned towards the cooler side, the rice and beans were cold and lacked flavor. The service, despite a friendly demeanor, suffered from forgetfulness and a lack of attentiveness. I had to ask for drink refills at least four times and each time I asked for a straw and the waiter never brought it. Room for improvement at this restaurant, not a culinary highlight.
google avatar

Yeffry F.

Yelp
I went there for the first time to have dinner with my friend and the food, ambiance, and server were great. Elizabeth was very attentive, friendly, and willing to assist us! Thanks for the great service. It certainly did not go unnoticed!
google avatar

Tenika L.

Yelp
Full of flavor, I was late to take the photo Great service, manager was constantly checking in with customers.
google avatar

Randy O.

Yelp
The food was amazing! we ordered a little of everything on the menu as it was our first visit! hands down "the best Mexican food" to date! Christian waited half a dozen tables, but made us feel like we were the only guests! Cannot tell this was an Italian food restaurant before as the atmosphere, including music leaves you feeling you are in a nice border town. Cannot express how great our evening over food was! 5 stars or more!
google avatar

Christie B.

Yelp
We got there around 2:30 on Sunday and it had enough room to seat us immediately. We didn't wait long and they automatically brought out chips and salsa with water even before we ordered drinks or food. We got exactly what we wanted, meatless special and taco salad. The chicken was so good and the rice was perfectly cooked. Then we had the nicest waiter, Omar, who got people together to sing me happy birthday and made it a point to talk to us about if we enjoyed the experience. Very clean, very organized and very comfortable, The atmosphere was amazing. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Hector A.

Yelp
What can i say....the food is delicious! The best Mexican rice in Houston...like Mom used to make. Margaritas could be a little sweeter. The service is top notch! Graciela is great!! The interior is pretty....however, the noise level is horrible. Sitting next to my dinner companion and we had to yell to hear each other. We were seated in a back corner of the party room and I thought that we would be away from most if the noise....WRONG! They really need to address this. It was my dinner companion's first time to this location and he said he wouldn't return to this location (even though it is the nearest location for us)! I am starting to feel the same.....sad. The noise level is the reason for my rating; otherwise, it would be 5 stars

Trang S.

Yelp
Bar service was a little slow. Seemed like the person we had was training, order 2 drinks and it took a while for it to be made. I've never seen sangria poured from a Bag before... The chicken taco Al carbon was not edible. Overcooked and salty. Black beans lacked flavor.
google avatar

Rogelio R.

Yelp
The restaurant looks great and the atmosphere is amazing so was the staff I got the fajita combo it was ok it wasn't as flavorful but everything else was great I just wouldn't recommend the fajita

Lilly C.

Yelp
KARLA IS THE GOAT! she made sure we got the best bang for our buck! Request her for sure!

Lisa J.

Yelp
Great service with cheap prices! Food is just what you would expect for the price. Don't expect quality Tex-Mex here, go here for cheap cheesy carbs with salsa.

Suzy B.

Yelp
This new location Buffalo Spredway has the best and most efficient yake out service in Houston.Plus the take out area is a very friendly spot to wait in . They take their time in prepping the food in containers which preserve the quality. The location and parking are well planned..Everything arrives fresh and delicious..I appreciate the staff so.much!

Bobby D.

Yelp
PROS: Great food, great service, very reasonable prices.... CONS: Very noisy, lots of echoed sounds, music way too loud. Overall, good time, great location.

Michael D.

Yelp
When I say this is the best burger I've ever had ...please trust me. This is NOT a drill. So so so good!!! I'm telling everyone I know and I want y'all to know too. Soo so soooooo good! Thank me later...happy new year!!
