Award-Winning Miramar Meadery Adding Morena Tasting Room and Kitchen - Eater San Diego

"Lost Cause Meadery is embarking on a major expansion that will move its production hub and double its capacity. First introduced in Fall 2017, the meadery has been sharing a 3,000-square-foot space in the Miramar area with Serpentine Cider and The Good Seed Food Company, and will continue to operate its tasting room there. At its new space in the Morena District near the junction of I-5 and I-8, Lost Cause will have just over 3,000-square-feet all to themselves, with the possibility for additional outdoor space that they could potentially share with neighbor Deft Brewing. Designed in collaboration with Hauck Architecture and Studio 32, the tasting room and production facility will also have a kitchen that will serve meat and cheese boards, hot-pressed sandwiches, and other small bites. Coming off a spate of wins at this year’s Mazer Cup International, known as “the largest commercial and amateur mead competition in the world”, Lost Cause brought home five meals and tied for the most medals won by any meadery. Head mead maker Billy Beltz, who runs the company with his wife Suzanna, says he plans on beefing up their barrel-aged program and creating special bottles for mead club members. Beltz, who will be releasing fortified meads, also intends to produce one-off experimental styles just for the new tasting room. His meads, which run the gamut from dry to dessert-like, each spotlight a different honey varietal. Bolt Fan Blues is made with orange blossom honey, blueberries, and lemons, Lucid Distortion is a collab with Mostra Coffee is based on caramelized honey with coffee and figs, and Wine Barrel Aged Easy Bender features wildflower honey, strawberries, and black currants and is aged for nine months in cabernet sauvignon barrels. Due this November, the Morena area outpost will also allow Lost Cause to host chef dinners and other special events for consumers and the craft beverage industry that will focus on mead education." - Candice Woo

Maybe I came at the wrong time. Their selection on mead for on site and to-go was average. I usually love mead. Based on the hype I came in and I was able to try a few onsite, which honestly they were ok just nothing outstanding. Staff friendliness felt mundane. For how empty the place was I felt like service speed was slow. Overall I wanted to love this place it just didn’t live up to the hype especially when it to flavor of their mead.

Google
Really, really good mead. Their curated flight has a nice mixture of traditional-ish meads and truly experimental ones, but all of them were unique and tasty. This place epitomizes the term “craft meadery.”

Lost Cause Meadery is a gem in San Diego’s craft beverage scene, offering a unique and refreshing experience that stands out from the usual breweries and wineries in the area. Mead, for those who may not know, is an ancient alcoholic drink made by fermenting honey with water, and sometimes fruits, spices, or herbs. Lost Cause Meadery has truly perfected this historical beverage, blending tradition with modern creativity to produce a variety of flavors that are both innovative and delicious. The atmosphere at Lost Cause is laid-back and welcoming, with a rustic, minimalist vibe that complements the history of mead itself. It’s a great spot to enjoy something out of the ordinary, whether you’re a seasoned mead enthusiast or trying it for the first time. The staff was knowledgeable and took the time to explain the different options, which made the tasting experience even better. Each pour felt like a journey into a centuries-old craft, with a modern San Diego twist. That said, there was a bit of an odd moment during my visit that I couldn’t help but notice. There seemed to be some tension among the staff when, I assume, the owner walked in. It created a slight weird energy, which was surprising in such a relaxed setting. While it didn’t take away from the quality of the mead or the overall experience, it’s something that stood out and could be improved for future visits. Despite that minor hiccup, Lost Cause Meadery is well worth checking out. Their menu offers something for everyone, from light and floral options to bold and spiced creations. Each glass showcases the versatility of mead and the artistry behind it, and it’s clear that a lot of thought and passion goes into every batch. In a city filled with craft beer and wine, Lost Cause Meadery offers a unique and memorable alternative. Whether you’re a local or just visiting San Diego, I highly recommend stopping by to enjoy a taste of history and innovation. It’s a place you won’t find anywhere else, and the experience alone makes it a must-visit destination!

Get lost here cause you love mead. Even my partner that doesn’t care for mead enjoyed several. Definitely recommend getting a flight which you could easily share with 2 people to make sure you order tasters of the rest. You can take the mead to the main garten area but they also have their own private outdoor area that is nice during the day but even nicer all lit up at night. Funky decor and friendly service. You can run the same tab shared with oddish wines to make sure you sample from both.

Google
Delicious and diverse meads! Glad we trusted the curated flight. Very chill atmosphere and friendly bartender.

Google
Nestled in at The Garten, this local gem offers a variety of tasty meads and mead cocktails. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable of the different offerings. Some flavors are staples, and some are rotated based on the season or availability. In addition to the tasting room, you can take home cans, bottles, or growlers. While they don't offer food, Casette Pizza is one of the other businesses at The Garten, offering a selection of pizzas and sandwiches.

Google
Truly the best mead I’ve ever had. If you like mead, do yourself a favor and try a flight. You will not be disappointed. The staff is easy going and very nice. Our mead-tender Ashley, was lovely, sweet and knowledgeable with the meads!

Tamara Green

Google
Nice place with a variety of mead flavors. Get a flight to try several. Jäkel and Til Death Do Us Tart were our favorites. Shared outdoor patio with a brewery, winery, and pizza!

Yelp
Very nice tasting room! Feels cozy and safe. Good thing the food places brings you the food to your table either in the tasting room or the patio they have. My favorite was the tepache mode(get it?) Next time I will try the cocktails.

Yelp
Lost Cause is great! Good vibes all around! I'm a fan of their seating, their outdoor patio is quaint. I also think they have some great winners on their menu! I appreciate that they rotate their selection often. Their latest key lime flavor is a big hit!
google avatar

Yelp
Got the flight. They were ok. So different than traditional beer but I liked most of them. More ciderish than beer but I did enjoy it. Service was great. Decent value for the flight.

Yelp
Coming into this place, I was really excited to try out their meads. After seeing all of the good reviews about this place, I had somewhat of an expectation that the mead would be good. I came in wanting to bring a bottle home to share with my fiancé because he loves mead. There was some street parking available when I came. The outside patio area was really nicely decorated and spacious. When I went inside, I wasn't really greeted by the person that was working there. She was talking to another couple so I understood that she might not be able to talk to me. However, I she didn't acknowledge my presence and I felt kind of awkward when I came in.. it felt like I wasn't supposed to be there. I got the Neon Day Trip and the Jackel and both missed the mark. They were both too watery and sweet for my liking. Not surprisingly, I didn't buy a bottle and left after finishing the two glasses.

Yelp
I love mead and this meadery definitely delivered! It's inside The Garten which houses a few places and Lost Cause is one. They have a full menu of many different and delicious meads and even offer mead cocktails. If you want to have some food with your mead you can order from "Pizza Cassette" and they will bring it to you inside the meadery...win!
google avatar

Yelp
Never knew mead was a thing but absolutely love it. I go the the garten for trivia Thursday night and got their flight to try. Not all of the taster were to my liking but it was a great try. Now I know what to get every time I go. Plenty of options and the space is shared with a brewery and winery and pizza. Definately gotta check it out. There a lil of everything for everyone
google avatar

Yelp
Lost Cause Meadery is located in the corner of The Garten. I'm a huge fan of mead and was absolutely thrilled to learn that there is a meadery in SD! Their menu is dynamic. My friend and I shared a flight to get a taste of the season's offerings. Highly recommend this approach especially if it is your first time tasting mead. The area is spacious. I enjoyed sitting in their outdoor space surrounded by lush greenery while still being in the shade. I would come here again. Just a heads up, it's street parking only.

Yelp
Very cute spot that shares a courtyard with a winery, brewery and pizzeria. They have their own indoor seating area and their own patio, which are great if you want a quiet corner like we did--you can get all the lively energy of the courtyard without the struggle to find a table! You can also order from the pizza place and have it delivered straight to your seat here. Their meads are delicious and there's a ton of variety--the curated flight we had was a great mix of light, airy meads and heavier, thicker meads. They rotate regularly so if there's a mead you like, you better bring a bottle home. (We left with a bottle of Jakel, a berry-heavy mead with an acidic finish, and a sweet Lemon Cello they reminded us of lemon candy). The staff are friendly, knowledgeable and quick--we had our first flight within 30 seconds of ordering, and it was a ton of fun chatting with them. Highly recommend this spot! One thing to note is they have two locations, both in the style of food courts. We preferred this location because of the cuter space, but the Miralani location carries the same drinks and specials, so which to choose will come down to personal preference.

Yelp
My daughter and I stopped here on our way home from Xmas shopping. I've been here before but it's improved! The outdoor seating area The Garten accommodated Deft Brewery, Pizza Cassete, Lost Cause Meadery and Oddish Wine. We purchased a great flight from the Meadery, a blonde from Deft and the Lemon Song pizza from Pizza Cassete. Everything was great! We enjoyed the sunshine at a great picnic table and even ran into some friends and shared our food/drink!
google avatar

Annastacia W.

Yelp
This is such a fun hangout place! The Meadery is in the back of the Biergarten area and there's outdoor and indoor seating. Each table has a number and pizza menu, you can order pizza at the garten and they'll deliver the pizza straight to your table. The meads are rotating and you can choose from tasters to fill pours. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. You'll never have a bad time here!
google avatar

Nika S.

Yelp
Such a rad spot for a fun Trivia night! Came here after work and really enjoyed the ambience and camaraderie shared at this location. I tried their flight of meads & was not disappointed. If you like sweet beers, I would try the blueberry for sure! I decided to go with the jackfruit sandwich, and really enjoyed! Service was fast, and it was nice that they came by the table to check in halfway through our service. @neeks93 on insta

Yelp
This place is so fun and unique! I'm not really familiar with mead so it was really nice that they had the flight option available where you can try all the different flavors. The inside is decorated well with cool art and a modern aesthetic. The outside area is really nice because you can sit with alot of people at the picnic tables and then order pizza too. This has become one of my new favorite spots!
google avatar

Yelp
Came in today and had the mead flight. Very, very tasty but one flight was plenty for two of us to try. We got a bottle of Picking Time to-go. Some of the darker mead were very tasty and strong but a bit heavy for a summer afternoon. The space was great with a nice private covered patio. Service was knowledgeable and friendly. Very dog friendly and we look forward to coming back.
google avatar

Francesca P.

Yelp
I had a great experience trying both mead and Lost Cause for the first time. A friend of mine recommended I try it and it was the perfect spot for a relaxing afternoon with friends visiting from out of town. It's located in a little plaza with some other restaurants and a brewery with a shared outdoor patio space. The tasting room associates were very welcoming, friendly, and helpful, and suggested we try the flights since we had never had mead before. It was so nice sitting out on the patio and there was a live band playing that evening. It's great because even if your group has different tastes, there is something for everyone amongst all the businesses. Mead is pretty sweet, the whites are like a Riesling or moscato and the reds are like a port wine. Worth a try if you like your drinks sweet!
google avatar

Joshua H.

Yelp
The most amazing meadery in all San Diego for sure. Way cool place with good people behind the bar. A nifty space inside and out. The mead is spectacular and has something for every pallet. I loved the Jakel the best and got a bottle to bring home. So darn good. Maggie is a class act bartender there so be sure to ask for her. She knows all the meads very well. She will treat you right for sure.
google avatar

Imo O.

Yelp
If you are looking for sweeter meads, this is definitely the place for you! Lost Cause is located inside of the gärten complex which has outdoor seating, a few tasting rooms, a pizza oven, and live music. So the vibes are definitely there! The staff is amazing as Jake kindly told us all about the meads and set up the mead flight for us. The flight comes with 6 different meads and is shareable! You can sit in their tasting room or outside on the shared patio. The meads were amazing but I loved the Neon Trip and Quince Orcharski the most! Highly recommend those to take home! Will be coming back the next time I am in San Diego!

Scott S.

Yelp
Great environment. Tasty drinks and Ashely and Matt killed it with drink recommendations.
google avatar

Dung N.

Yelp
It was my first time trying mead. I like that it's sweet! We shared the VIP flight, which had rose cosplay, blue berrymore, neon trip, and haxa. I also wanted to try their ice cream, which is also made with mead. It was good, but in the end, it got too sweet for me LOL. Can't wait to try more flavors of mead!
google avatar

Christina H.

Yelp
This brewery is very artsy and welcoming space. They have a nice patio area with plenty of shade so you can enjoy your drink with friend for hours. I had their curated flight and it was $20, and was worth every penny! Every mead the chosen for the flight was amazing! It is definitely on the sweet side, so if you don't like sweet wines, I wouldn't recommend. The energy in the brewery is very relaxed the staff is very knowledgeable and helpful in finding the drink that you will like the best. Bonus, it is dog friendly!
google avatar

Rae A.

Yelp
Came here after a day of moving and was surprised at how crowded it was on a Sunday. A little hidden but also had a ton of other breweries and one pizza place. We really enjoyed the bartender who was patient with our questions about the menu. Our favorite drink was Picking Time! We will have to get a bottle of it for ourselves soon!
google avatar

Gem R.

Yelp
Got "the bees knees" cocktail, and it was wonderfully refreshing. Shared a flight with a girlfriend, and it ranged from sweet to very sweet. She was looking for meads that were a bit more on the drier end, but I was fine with the selection. If you come here and tire of the sweet mead, there's another brewery next door with a great range of beers. They also have a pizza pop up outside where you can enjoy your food and drank amid a lovely ambience of hanging plants and outdoor strings of lights. Makes for a very pleasant evening.

Harrison W.

Yelp
The mead is wonderful and the art is absolutely killer as well. Service was awesome. Nothing but great things to say about the establishment. Keep in mind to keep the neighboring alcohol establishment beverages separate! I made the mistake of trying to bring a beer from a different establishment in the neighboring area and little did I know that due to separate liquor licenses, I couldn't have my beer in the same room as lost cause. My apologies guys! Thanks again, and will be revisiting soon.
google avatar

Dr ED M.

Yelp
Today was their 5 year anniversary and the mead club members meeting last one for 2022 and I got my last mead for the year plus I signed up for 2023 yay coveters!!! Megan gave me my wolf bottle I cant wait to the new HAX comes out Had the anniversary flight my plus the Making of Bones: Conundrum, The making of the bones: ominous is my fav It has a sudden explosion of Congolese and vanilla beans with a creme brulee after taste. On the palate there is a hint of toffee, butterscotch pears and birthday cake.
google avatar

Eva R.

Yelp
Whether you love mead or have never tried it, you should check out Lost Cause. I've tried a number of session meads before but stayed away from the still meads since they tend to be syrupy and overly sweet. Not the case here! We tried a flight of different meads, with varying alcohol %, different flavors, and various sweetness levels. I liked some better than others, but all were fantastic. My favorites were the Deep Set and Crushing Dreams. My fiance loved the Lemon's Cello Nuts. I recommend to split a flight with another person or just order the 2oz pours. We shared a flight and then each got a full pour and it was too much for us. They don't have food here but there's a pizza place next door. I believe you can also bring your own food in from other places too. We were there on a Saturday and there was live music outside in a space shared with a brewery. The decor inside is really colorful and vibrant. Inside the bathrooms there's some Russian anti-alcohol propaganda which is pretty cool.
google avatar

Alyse H.

Yelp
If you are new to meads, this place is a great place to start. Our bartender was insanely knowledgeable and willing to impart that knowledge to us. Not only were the libations delicious, but they have an adorable back patio area with climbing vines and lighting that provides a relaxing atmosphere. In the middle of the city, it's a respite from the concrete of the city.
google avatar

Spencer K.

Yelp
I was referred to Lost Cause Meadery by a friend & I was not let down. Everything from the curation to the wide array of meads really solidifies this spot among the greats. Definitely check out Lost Cause Meadery if you get a chance.
google avatar

Vinh L.

Yelp
I've always been a fan of Mead and Lost Cause delivered great mead. I especially liked their Jamaica mead, delicious

Jersey R.

Yelp
Meh- if you like super sweet, sugary drinks, this is your spot. We couldn't even get through the flight because all "beers" tasted like the most sugary version of fruit punch you can imagine. They all had a distinct honey flavor which was nice but not a single "beer" tasted like beer. Also, the staff were not friendly. For an actual beer at this location, Deft Brewing wins and has real beer.
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
Love their mead, beautiful location, will be back! First time trying their mead and was very impressed
google avatar

Ross N.

Yelp
Totally legit medery offering everything from session draft mead to full-bodied meads. Different honeys and adjuncts here. The pineapple hopped mead was the weirdest the the barrel aged peach cobbler was inlike any mead I've ever had. The space is great. Nice and airy, with comfy chairs and art prints to buy and plugs to kepp my phone charged. I stopped in randomly on a day where I was checking out (ciders/ Kombucha) and am impressed. I'll gladly be back.
google avatar

Joanna H.

Yelp
This was my first visit to a Meadery and it was fabulous! My sister abs I went to go to the brewery next door and stopped in on our way out. You walk in to be surprised by an upscale atmosphere. Katie was the best host! She let us know all about the meads and made great suggestions, plus she blows a flight whistle. So fun! The meads were very good! I will be going back before our vacation is over.
google avatar

Brittany K.

Yelp
They did it again. I take one taste, then another, then one more. Learn from our mistakes and just get the flight okay? Don't think you just want to try one or two. You don't want to do that. You want to try them all. Each mead has so many intricacies and nuances of flavor that you're going to be so happy you tried them. You're bound to find a favorite, and then another. The menu is easy to understand, you'll see there which items are available to take home in either a can, bottle, or growler. There is always someone friendly there ready to help you and answer any question you have, no matter how many times you ask. Enjoy!
google avatar

Jonna A.

Yelp
I'm not a huge fan of alcohol but my friend convinced me to try this place out and I was deeply impressed by the variety of sweet alcohol they had. I split a flight with my boyfriend and fell in love with all their drinks. Definitely coming back!
google avatar

Beatry H.

Yelp
I'm a huge mead lover! Tired of red and white wines? Want to try something new? Lost Cause is the place to go! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable of their choice product. Great pizza place right outside makes it easy for a chill or date spot. Come and enjoy a glass of mead!

Daniel D.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere and drinks! There are not many places to get mead so when I saw this place on Yelp I got excited. I'm so glad I found this amazing place. I tried a flight of six drinks for $26 including tax and it was worth every penny. The Mellow Mel and the Lemon's Cello were incredible. Both were sweet and rich in flavor. The staff were friendly and helpful and the place was lively. I can't wait to go back again.
google avatar

Alma P.

Yelp
It's our first time here (I started typing this about 3 weeks ago) and never resumed because I couldn't select a favorite mead . We have been disciples since their Miramar location opened up but we are even stronger followers now they Bay Park opened because it is closer to where we live! Tasting/ drinking/ indulging yourself in STRIKE THE SUN is a Must ! Everything they make is incredible and worth tasting- so make sure you get a flight to get the most out of your visit. LOCATION/AMBIANCE: it looks great, their patio atmosphere is very very cozy and homey . You feel like you're hanging out in their backyard, and to top of off there is some amazing art featured throughout the space. Besides their patio they also share an outdoor space with Cucina Caprese and Deft - so plenty of space to taste local food and drinks. TEAM: The lost cause team is like a family, they literally make everyone feel welcomed. Billy and Suzanna are great hosts and amazing mead makers, great mead and great conversations await you. COST: varies, they have bottled mead and they have started filling out bottles (but I know with Covid it changes constantly).
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
The mead cocktails here are really good. I had one that was negroni style and one that was a bourbon style mead. The interior is cute, it's a nice place to relax. You can also get mead flights and even mead to go.
google avatar

Austin H.

Yelp
Lost Cause is, probably, the best meadery on earth. Everything I've tried from there has been fantastic, from traditional meads to heavily fruited melomels to more experimental stuff. The bay park location (their new-ish expansion) is a great space, and neighbors with delicious pizza and beer too.

Joseph S.

Yelp
Excellent service, great drinks. The fruity meads are absolutely amazing. Also cool that you can get ciders there as well.
google avatar

Brandi G.

Yelp
My husband and I recently discovered this place & it is a hidden gem! We are obsessed with all the mead flavors and haven't tried one we don't like. Staff is super friendly and we enjoy the large patio section. We also love that we can bring our dog!
google avatar

Ryan U.

Yelp
Such an amazing hidden gem! If you're already familiar with Lost Cause, you need to check out this new "main" location. If you're not familiar with them, GET FAMILIAR! This is the best meadery (fermented honey) in San Diego, and one of the best in the country! The staff are all incredibly nice and welcoming and will be happy to walk you through your first introduction to mead. The owners are some of the best people around, and a little bit of time spent talking to them will let you see that not only are they incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, but also about their customer and the experience they provide. This location is nice and spacious with a great blend of clean cut and relaxed rustic. Seeing their aging barrels all over gives you the sense that you're right amidst the action, and that each of those barrels is holding a rare gem that you can't wait to experience! There are so many nuances of detail that you can discover as you pay close attention-- from the beautiful painted murals, to the intricate copper tap back splash, to the woodwork of the counters. The owners truly poured their passion into making this location truly their own, to provide the best possible experience for their award winning and mind blowing mead. Get over there and check them out!
google avatar

Katie P.

Yelp
There is literally only 1 word to describe this place, INCREDIBLE!! One of the most beautiful atmospheres you could ask for. Incredible art work..beautiful greenery..gorgeous outdoor space. The mead is SO good! We started with a flight and claimed our absolute favorites real quick! I highly recommend checking out Lost Cause Meadery!
google avatar

Aaron M.

Yelp
Amazing atmosphere, amazing mead! I had a flight of the various meads they had to offer. Each one was unique and delicious. As a bonus, Cucina Caprese is located right in front of the building. They're whipping up wood fire pizzas and other Italian fare. You should definitely check this place out!

Ann r.

Yelp
Not sure what this place is doing in a great spot with Deft Brewery. Went to check out what mead was all about. Staff was less than friendly.not a good vibe like at Deft.
google avatar

Emily K.

Yelp
Run, do not walk to the coolest new spot in San Diego. Lost Cause meadery has done it again. The ambiance, attention to detail and overall stunning space makes this meadery the place to be. Making a reservation online was easy, they were very accommodating when I needed to add a few people to my reservation. When we arrived we got the cutest table looking out to their patio. We were in awe of the space, the lush plants everywhere, the wall art and there is a secret door! Our party all got the mead flight and it was delicious. My favorite was the 'Rona Blues. It is also dog friendly, which is a huge plus in my book. The owners also make you feel very welcomed. Billy and Suzanna have created something very special and their mead is out of this world.

Cydni S.

Yelp
This place is absolutely superb! From the aesthetics to the location to the mead itself it's a 10/10 establishment. Had a chance to speak to one of the founders and she was very nice as well. The bar tenders are also genuinely kind. Honestly I can't think of enough nice things to say about this place, and I highly recommend checking it out!
google avatar

harold g.

Yelp
I just purchased some Hundred Fifty Up. Wow. The most amazing mead I've ever had. My daughter characterized it as "Christmas in a bottle". Very true. The Saffron is so unique & subdued it brings all the complex flavors together. Aged in orange bitters barrel!! I can't immage Billy and Suzanne making anything more amazing than this, but somehow I know they will. Do not miss this mead...simply amazing.
google avatar

Samantha S.

Yelp
Such good mead! Well priced. Great new location. The only downside is the entrance is a tad hidden and the food truck outside is not that great.
google avatar

Akanksha G.

Yelp
Back patio is super cute and dog friendly. The meadery is a great option to try if you're looking for something a little different from a brewery or winery. The pizza next door was good too!
