"I'm excited that Lost Cause Meadery is embarking on a major expansion that will move its production hub and double its capacity: after sharing a 3,000-square-foot Miramar space with Serpentine Cider and The Good Seed Food Company since its Fall 2017 debut (and continuing to operate its tasting room there), the meadery will open a new Morena District outpost near the I-5/I-8 junction with just over 3,000 square feet all to themselves and potential additional outdoor space that could be shared with neighbor Deft Brewing. Designed with Hauck Architecture and Studio 32, the new tasting room and production facility will include a kitchen serving meat and cheese boards, hot-pressed sandwiches, and other small bites, and will allow Lost Cause to host chef dinners and special events focused on mead education for consumers and the craft beverage industry when it opens this November. Riding a strong year at the Mazer Cup International — bringing home five medals and tying for the most medals won by any meadery — head mead maker Billy Beltz (who runs the company with his wife Suzanna) plans to beef up the barrel-aged program, create special bottles for mead club members, release fortified meads, and produce one-off experimental styles exclusive to the new tasting room. Their range spans dry to dessert-like meads that spotlight different honey varietals, including Bolt Fan Blues (orange blossom honey with blueberries and lemons), Lucid Distortion (a Mostra Coffee collaboration based on caramelized honey with coffee and figs), and Wine Barrel Aged Easy Bender (wildflower honey with strawberries and black currants, aged nine months in cabernet sauvignon barrels)." - Candice Woo
