The 26 Essential Louisville Restaurants

"Owner Jared Matthews calls Lou Lou Italian/Cajun with a Mediterranean twist. A Southerner through and through, Matthews was born in Louisiana and spent some time in Alabama before moving to Kentucky, so his love for Cajun food runs deep. His menu ranges across crawfish etouffee, jambalaya, pasta carbonara, and a classic gyro, plus an extensive wine and cocktail list. Restaurant regulars will recommend ordering the Lou Chicago, a Chicago-style, double deep dish pizza loaded with cheese and three toppings of your choice." - Lennie Omalza

This place is a classic case of Kentuckians supporting the most bland safe food you can think of. The only thing Cajun/Louisiana about this place is the decor and naming of the dish. This place is for people who have never tried Cajun food. We ordered the Chicago deep dish with meatballs, mushrooms and feta. We go expecting to wait 30 minutes for this too cook. Waiter even says it takes a long time. So we order an app and the Cajun sampler(gumbo, jambalaya and etoufee). The pizza came out in less than 15 minutes. We weren't even at the restaurant 30min and mind you it took about 10min for the waiter to even come over and great us and take our order. This deep dish isn't deep, has almost no toppings. You can eat it with your hands the crust is hard and has weird burned taste to it. Cannot recommend this dish at all. Save your $30+ and buy dominos. The sampler of gumbo, jambalaya and etoufee is just a disgrace. It's 3 weird soups that come out with a big side of brown rice. They taste alright. Chef clearly is scared of salt and spicy and doesn't know how to make a roux. Have they ever gone to Louisiana? Let's go next Mardi Gras. Lol my family will show you all around the amazing spots. Aside from that the service was mehh. We waited a long time just to see a waiter. He had a very large group. We really needed a different waiter that wasn't so overloaded. If you are looking for a place that sacrifices authenticity of the culture they're supposedly inspired by and love unsalted slop then this place is for you.

The food here was pretty good, the service was great, but the atmosphere was only ok. We had the Spinach and Tomato Lavash appetizer and the Hot Brown pizza. The Lavash was ok and the pizza was very good. The decor was an eclectic attempt at Mardi Gras.

One of the best places around to get pretty tasty cajun and italian food. Definitely recommend their desserts. I don't think I've ever ate a better banana pudding, and the crem brulee is rich and smokey. 100% recommend

Neat little restaurant situated in a strip mall store front in a fairly unsuspecting place in Louisville. What a gem! We had the hot brown, probably the best rendering of the classic open faced sandwich I've ever tried. Thank you for that suggestion by our server! Also had the Jambalaya and it was authentic and delicious. Finished the meal with the bread pudding, another awesome suggestion from our server. Perfect texture and flavor. We'll be back for sure in the near future.

We went for lunch on Valentine’s Day. We had a short wait but it was well worth it. I had the black bean and sausage soup, hot and spicy, perfect! Served with warm crusty bread. My husband had his favorite- shrimp and grits! We were recently in Florida and the shrimp and grits there were greasy and not as creamy. Lou Lou’s shrimp and grits are the best, absolutely delicious.

We came in from out of town and decided to have dinner and wanted to try the Hot Brown so we found this restaurant. It did not disappoint. But we also had the Crab Cakes (excellent), Gumbo (excellent) , Jambalaya (excellent), cheese pizza (My son said it is one of the best he’s ever had), banana pudding (excellent), She Crab Soup (very good) and the shrimp and grits (phenomenal). Literally everything this restaurant makes is top tier. I haven’t had food this good in a long time. Thanks for the great experience!!
