"Louie’s smashburger gets everything right. The potato bun is squishy but not soggy. The double patties are thin and seared from edge to edge. The sauteed onions are sliced so thin they're practically translucent. But it's the "Louie’s Special truffle sauce" (an additional but very worth it $2 upgrade) that bumps it into that top 1% of the city's smashburgers. It tastes a little like the sauce from that fast food restaurant that’s not open on Sundays (but 700% better). "Louie’s is an outdoor tiki hut situation in the back of a Mid-Beach hotel, and one of the only local-friendly options a mere 15 yards from the sand. This cubano really makes its pork the star of the show. It’s heavy on meat—delicious roast pork spills out of the sandwich. The rest of the usual suspects are all present (pressed cuban bread, swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles) but in small enough ratios that don’t distract from the pork. "This sandy beachside hangout in the back of a hotel is almost as inaccessible as it looks. It’s only open on weekends, starting Fridays at 6pm (and they do a lot of private events too). This, toxically, only makes us crave it more. So double-check their Instagram before you decide to come, and maybe even call first too. Once you’ve cleared those obstacles, order the smashburger, pan con bistec, and cuban sandwich—even if you’re by yourself. "Take a walk down the Miami Beach boardwalk—all the way from 1st Street to Haulover Inlet—and you’ll see plenty of bars and restaurants. But 99.9% of them exist exclusively for tourists who don’t know any better. That’s why Louie’s, a tiki hut situation in the back of a Mid-Beach hotel, is so valuable. It’s one of the only local-friendly options a mere 15 yards from the sand. Order the smashburger, pan con bistec, and cuban sandwich—even if you’re by yourself. "Louie’s feels like sneaking into a Miami Beach hotel. Except instead of being asked to leave by an annoyed manager, you’re invited to stay, relax, and eat delicious things between bread. This Cuban concept in the back of a Mid-Beach hotel is one of the only local-friendly options a mere 15 yards from the sand. They make a very meaty Cuban sandwich and a simple smashburger, which are both among the best in town. The palapa is small, but in a good way. You’ll probably get to know your palapa peers after a couple drinks (there’s a full bar, by the way) and it’s a great place to remind yourself that hanging out in a hut next to the beach isn’t only for tourists." - virginia otazo, ryan pfeffer
