"I'm often called upon to take visitors for Detroit-style pizza, so when Craig LaBan asked I recommended Loui's in Hazel Park; the old-school dining room with empty Chianti bottles dangling throughout keeps a working-class vibe, and the pizza impressed with tight, crisp edges and a cheese pull worth marveling over. We also tried a regional menu favorite, the Loui's Special, which swaps a traditional hoagie roll for thick, crunchy, buttery layers of Texas Toast held together with melted cheese and filled with thin Philly-style strips of steak drenched in a tangy house barbecue sauce and served with coin-cut pickles — not exactly what you'd find at Angelo's or Pastificio, but it made for a fun conversation about regional legacies and held up well as leftovers." - Serena Maria Daniels
