These Are Denver’s Best Italian Restaurants | Eater Denver

"Call him the East Coast King: Just as he brought Denverites a taste of New York via Rosenberg’s Bagels & Delicatessen and Famous Original J’s Pizza, so Joshua Pollack offers them a slice of New Jersey in the form of this Italian-American sub shop and market. Hot sandwiches come loaded with the likes of sausage, peppers, and onions or porchetta, provolone, broccoli rabe, and herb aioli; cold ones include the roman fiesta with salami, pepperoni, ham, mozzarella, roasted red peppers and dressed mixed greens as well as the horseradish roast beef with muenster. And that’s not all: The display cases are chock-full of antipasti and salads, cheeses and olives, and offbeat Italian wines." - Eater Staff

Lou’s Italian Specialties Starts Slicing Deli Meats in Denver - Eater Denver

"Lou’s specializes in hot and cold sub sandwiches, like the Louie with Genoa salami, capicola, provolone, and ham, topped with fixings from shredded lettuce to oil and vinegar. Market sides include broccoli rabe and pasta salad. To drink, there’s a selection from San Pellegrino, and desserts start with hand-filled cannoli. The team led by Joshua Pollack, Nick Severino, and Jason Somers aims to bring a taste of New Jersey to Colorado." - Josie Sexton

Google
Came in for the first time the other day after hearing a lot about Lou’s for two years or so. A bit intimidated with all of the menu options and it being my first time, so I got an Italian beef (half) with giardiniera and it was pretty good! Decent portion given that it was a half sandwich. Duke’s “Chopped Cheese” nearby is the same size for a few dollars more and considered full size. Okay prices, everything appears to be given proper attention so it’s not expected to be cheap cheap. Really looking forward to getting some cannoli and some pasta to see the other side of their prepared cuisine, grabbing some deli items from their case, etc. Definitely will be back again to find out what I love.

Google
This place is sooo good. The chicken parm was absolutely perfect — from the crispy breading to the tender chicken and rich, savory sauce. The gnocchi was soft, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. And don’t sleep on the fried ravioli — the perfect starter to an amazing meal. Definitely coming back to try the rest of the menu!

Google
This place is so cute. It was a little overpriced for a sandwich. But it was definitely amazing and I would come back. The staff was so friendly they had answered all of our questions and gave us options. My friend ordered the pasta and said it was amazing.

Google
This place is awesome for Italian food in the area. They have a few tables indoors and a few tables outdoors. I got half of the Italian beef and thought it was tastey but a bit overpriced for half of a sandwich and no side. The peppers had a bit of a kick which is great. I would come back and try some other things.

Google
I’ve been twice so far. I’ve had the chicken parm and the chicken cutlet sandwich. Both delicious. But the chicken cutlet was the best! My mom got the Louie and she loved it! The pasta salad is AMAZING! I didn’t care for the potato. I like my mom’s better. But all in all this place is definitely in the rotation for going out!

Cole Schindler

Google
Really tasty sandwich. I recommend the sausage and peppers. Slower than many other fast food/ quick service sandwich shops, but worth a 5-10 min wait.

Google
First time trying this place but very disappointed by what I received from what I ordered. The menu shows “Half” for $9 and “Full” for $18. Based on simple math/logic you figure the full would be two halves, but no. Pictures attached and shows the “Full” is 1.25 times larger than the half. Very shady tactics to upsell a “larger” sandwich. Food was good but unfortunately I can’t support a business that cuts corners that badly especially given the high prices.

Ryan Morgan

Google
DANG good sandwiches but comes with a high price. Ordered the horseradish roast beef sandwich and it is out of this world tasty. The horseradish is perfectly subtle and the full sub is more than enough for one person. Ordered a plate of spaghetti and meatballs, and while the meatballs are out of this world both on the plate and in the sandwich (I’ve ordered the sandwich previously), the spaghetti noodles are not house made, which begs the question why is the price so high? The chocolate cannoli with pistachio is the best cannoli I’ve ever had in my life. Do not sleep on it.

Yelp
We ordered catering for the office today and I have to say, this is some GOD TIER FOOD. The sandwiches are stuffed to the brim and have the perfect amount of bread to filling ratio. I tried the Italian and the eggplant and the eggplant was one of the best sandwiches I've had in a long time. Also had the arancini balls with marinara and just delicious. Perfectly fried, soft inside, and the red sauce was great. The cannoli were great. Perfect texture, awesome pistachios and chocolate chips. Just amazing. I can't wait to go into the store and eat some other dishes. Lou's is LEGIT!!

Yelp
Sheesh we got a winner here folks. As someone who cares about sandwiches, I can confidently say this is a 10/10 Italian deli. The Louie blew my mind. Every piece of the puzzle was fantastic - the bread was crisp and soft, the meats fresh and flavorful, and the veg and toppings well proportioned. The vibe is classic Italian deli, very neighborhoody. Friendly. Stoked to circle back and repeat my order.

Yelp
Heartbroken I didn't take a photo! But Lou's Muffaletta was chef kiss to perfection. I personally don't love doughy bread (I know, unpopular take) but this sandwich was incredible. All the flavors! Also the chopped salad, I was nervous to ask what the dressing was but I have a lot of experimenting to do when I get home!! They have loads of sides to choose from and seating inside and outside!

Yelp
Went here during lunch with some coworkers after hearing how great this place is! I got a half porchetta sandwich, side of Roman artichokes, two cannolis and an Aura Bora seltzer drink (how in the heck was this $4??). The sandwich was delicious!! It came with an au jus sauce on the side, and the bread was flavorful and super fresh. The artichokes were delicious too -- I'm Italian and remember eating similar artichokes my Italian grandmother used to prepare. Though, I think the price I paid for the artichokes were quite steep. The prices here are high and definitely not a weekly lunch spot, but want to come back and try their other sandwiches for sure. My coworker got the chicken parm and was raving about it! They also have a killer HH menu id like to come back and try. There are also a bunch of random Italian packaged goods in the store (jams, chips, jarred veggies), and a deli section, as well as a take and bake at home fridge section. Great neighborhood find!

Yelp
No surprise this gem gets 5 stars! We got two sandwiches and spaghetti meatballs for the kids. The Louie was 10/10. My LAWD. There is not an Italian deli in Colorado that compares. The chicken cutlet sandwich was meaty and flavorful. I loved it but I might try the Chicken Parm sandwich next time for fun. My two boys crushed the spaghetti and meatballs. You can tell everything is fresh. The best part is Josh (one of the owners and the executive chef) took our order. He was so friendly and just happy to be there.

Yelp
As an east coast native, I find it really difficult to find good, easy-coast style Italian here in Denver. I cannot say how pleased I was upon trying Lou's! We tried the chicken parm sub, the eggplant parm sub, and the fried ravioli. Each one was packed with flavor and had the true east coast style. The sauce was delicious, rustic and a tiny bit sweet. Both the eggplant and chicken parm were cooked wonderfully and the bread was toasted to perfection. Quick counter service with a couple seats inside, and a few tables on a small outdoor patio area. Definitely enjoyed everything and will return to try the other items I've been craving!
google avatar

Isaac S.

Yelp
Big chicken cutlet sandwich guy here, a little bit letdown by the chicken cutlet sandwich at Lou's. The chicken was very chewy and overcooked. The broccoli Rob that I switched in for bell pepper due to allergies was exceptional. I appreciated their concession to meet my dietary need. The tiramisu was amazing, convenient little spot indoor outdoor seating. We'll go again and try a different sandwich.

Yelp
2 years later, it's time for an updated review! My friend and I walked to Lou's from our dance studio for lunch, and it's still one of the best sandwich shops in town. There are so many options, including groceries in their refrigerated sections. I ended up ordering a Muffeletta because I looove olives and it was recommended by one of the staff members there. The half portion was perfect. Apparently they do quarter portions as well. Definitely want to try some of their plates in the future. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. You can pair your sandwich with one of the beverages in their labeled fridges. Plenty of street parking in the area. Excited to come back and support Lou's again!

Yelp
Lou's is one of our absolute favorites in Denver! Pick any sandwich on the menu and you will love it! The staff is super friendly and welcoming. The building has a very authentic Italian feel to it. It's one of my favorite places to bring friends from out of town! Pro tip: you can order a build your own and have the sandwich how you like it.
google avatar

Jason S.

Yelp
The sandwiches here are beautiful, and the cross-sections are fabulous! A very nice selection of different sandwiches and I highly recommend some of the chips because they are super great with it. A small area to buy stuff and take home as well.
google avatar

Savannah K.

Yelp
YUM! I have been looking for the best deli in Denver and had to try out Lou's. The sandwiches are delicious and the half is more than enough to fill you up! You can choose from hot or cold sandwiches or even BYO. They offer delicious sides, soups, and salads as well as some desserts. I saw a large catering menu as well. The staff was so friendly and the food came out fast! Not a ton of places to sit inside but a few tables and stools. Definitely want to return!

Yelp
I ordered a muffaletta today for lunch - pickup. The bread was burnt on all sides of the sandwich. Maybe the sandwich would have been good if not burnt? The cheese had also melted off the side of the sandwich and so there was crusty, burnt cheese that I picked off my bread. By the time I got done picking off burnt bread there was literally no sandwich left to eat except the meat inside. This was my first time ordering from here. I won't make that mistake again.! I will stick with the Muffaletta at Jason's Deli... it is delicious! See pictures of it sad muffuletta below
google avatar

Theresa T.

Yelp
Louie was amazing - best Italian sandwich I had in a while. Pay at the counter but there's a few things in shop to check out (tinned fish, bread, cold deli, cheese, chips, drinks etc.) Got some ibérico ham flavored chips that were really fun. The guy behind the counter also offered me a sample of an already opened bag of chips! There's also a lot of outdoor seating! Go get a cold sandwich for the summer :-)
google avatar

David E.

Yelp
My first time at an Italian deli and I was not disappointed at all. Food is great and tastes fresh. The service was impeccable the owner brought the plates out himself and made sure we were taken care of. I had the chicken cutlet with an all natural Colorado Cola to wash it down.
google avatar

Rebecca M.

Yelp
Cute Italian Deli. The person that helped us, Jason, was very friendly and helpful. It's a counter service location...There was interior and exterior seating. The fried ravioli were really tasty and not overly bready. The marinara bead good and did not have an over powering spice that many have. The Prosciutto Mio (1/2 size) had a generous amount of meat and cheese. Prosciutto was fresh and we ordered some to go! The bread was crusty and delicious. The meatball sandwich (1/2 size) was really good and the meatballs were huge. Would definitely recommend Lou's if you are looking for a quality Italian Deli.

Dylan S.

Yelp
20 dollars for the most mid sandwhich I've ever had. You guys nailed it with Rosenberg's but fell flat with Lou's. I threw my sandwhich away and ended up going to Jersey Mike's. If this sandwhich was a car it'd be a lemon
google avatar

Yelp
Worst sandwiches in Denver??? We walked in during lunch time, second up! Wooo! Yeah, no. It took 45mins to get our lunch. It's a cute joint and has the vibe but there is no way that I would suffer the wait for something I can get slightly better and freaky fast somewhere else. We finally got up to the register and ordered the Italian beef and the severino grande and some mozzarella sticks. First, the moz sticks were blah, you'd need a few drinks to wash the synthetic Sysco flavor down. 0/5. Next up was the serverino grande. Does serverino mean iceberg lettuce? 2/3s of the sandwich is a bag of shredded iceberg lettuce that's been sitting in a hot car. The only thing more wilted than the lettuce was my excitement to try it. There might be a slice of each of the listed deli meat playing hide and seek under the lettuce (?) The Giardiniera was relegated to the fold in the bread and so most of my experience was it dripping down my arm... or were those my tears? -1/5 Next up was more of a crime against sandwiches. An utter disgrace. I unwrapped the saddest looking "Italian beef" I've ever seen. How did they get a hold of my grandma's overcooked Sunday roast beef??? So dry and devoid of flavor. At least this one came with a little cup to cry into. -100/5 Nice aesthetic, long wait, bad food 0/5
google avatar

Ivan N.

Yelp
$22 for the full Severino Grande sandwich. All premium meats, cheese and crisp bread. It's true to the saying you get what you pay for. Very happy and still working on the other half. Don't hesitate to spurge on yourself. Great customer service they follow up if everthing is good.
google avatar

Felicia J.

Yelp
First time eating here and it did not disappoint! My boyfriend and I got the breaded chicken cutlet, the chicken parm sandwich, and macaroni salad. The sauce on the chicken parm was sweet and delicious. 10/10 bread. Macaroni salad was no frills, classic and perfect. Can't wait to go back and try their cold sandwiches and pastas.

Yelp
We're visiting from LA, found this spot on the way to the hotel and decided to stop by. Before I say anything, ~$40 for two sandwiches is expensive! I ordered the Roman (something I can't remember) and my girlfriend had the chicken pesto. I thoroughly enjoyed my sandwich, it was great! I especially liked how you can actually taste the vinegar they put on the sandwich. It really wrapped the flavor together. My girlfriend enjoyed her sandwich as well, although I thought it was a bit salty for my taste. I also included a picture of the glass cups because back home there wouldn't be glasses available for anyone to just grab! Everyone here was nice and welcoming as well. I thought it was really cool how they had regulars and called each other by name.
google avatar

Ben M.

Yelp
Tasty sandwiches plus wide open deli counter. I got the roast beef. It was a fortuitous choice, because the place was so busy I knew I needed to get an order in fast and the roast beef was the first thing I saw. It was delicious. Will definitely go back. The look and feel of the place is perfect, like stepping into a New York deli, only in a room that's like four times larger than an actual New York deli. (Everything's bigger in the West.)
google avatar

Rob R.

Yelp
Best eggplant parm sandwich! The eggplant was perfectly cooked and covered in sauce. I asked for extra sauce and the chef put it on the side because it would have been too messy - he was completely right! I also tried the Hot Italian Beef - tasty but much spicier than I expected - had to peel some of the toppings off to eat it. If you're looking for a good sandwich spot, this is it. Will be back to try the chicken parm sandwich next time.
google avatar

Riley L.

Yelp
If I could give Lou's more than 5 stars I would. I LOVE this place!! I've been in Denver for about a year and have been coming to Lou's about once a week. The Louie is my go to! That sandwich paired with some jalepeno chips and a Diet Coke make the perfect meal. They also have great desserts and pasta salads. I can't say enough great things about Lou's. The service is always great and there is plenty of space inside or out on the patio. I'm looking forward to trying their new happy hour!
google avatar

Anthony P.

Yelp
Pretty good location for sandwiches. It has great flavor and taste so wonderful. The food has lots of options were so delicious. The Chicken Cutlet was really good and nice filling. Great portion and chicken was well-seasoned. It was very satisfying. They have plenty of great flavors to choose. The staff were all friendly too.
google avatar

Starr W.

Yelp
As a sandwich fan, Lou's missed the mark for me. I ordered the Chicken Pesto sandwich for pick up one day for lunch. Service was fine enough, I walked in and was greeted quickly, it was loud and bustling throughout the restaurant, but with such a reputable name in town, and with what appears to be a "gourmet" and staple in Denver, I expected more. My bread was tough, so my mouth was being scraped. It did not taste like the bread was made that day. It may be better to sit down here. I am willing to give them another chance of course, but as of now, Cheba Hut beats them over and over again. I didn't even think Lou's was as good as Snarfs. Super surprised at such stellar reviews, it isn't for me.
google avatar

Sylvie D.

Yelp
I am picky about my cannoli but Lou's has probably the best one I have ever had. I don't have a picture of it because I ate it so fast. 10/10

Shelby J.

Yelp
Amazing sandwiches and great selection of specialty items. Cheese sticks were a 10/10! Everything was fresh and the staff was friendly!
google avatar

Robbie R.

Yelp
The sandwiches are such a hit! Highly recommend the Serevino Grande if you like an Italian with spice. Good size, quick service, last well for take our. This place is legit!!
google avatar

Amanda S.

Yelp
We placed a carry out order at Lou's while in Denver and the food was FANTASTIC! I was pretty hungry and debated ordering a whole vs half sandwich - I went with a half cold veggie sub and the minestrone soup. The half sandwich was so large I had to save the soup for the next day! Both were delicious. The rest of our group enjoyed their meals as well- my husband had the meatball sub and toasted ravioli and said they both were great! I would definitely recommend Lou's to those in Denver!
google avatar

Cait Z.

Yelp
Love this spot! He genuinely great Italian sandwich which are super generous in portion size! Highly recommend them!
google avatar

Emma B.

Yelp
I have been hearing about this place for awhile and so glad we finally made it over there! The food was authentic and so yummy! Loved our sandwiches and the eggplant cold salad! They were quick when we popped in and ordered to go, we maybe waited 5 minutes. Lots of people were coming in for pickup orders so you can do that too! But there is so much to explore in the store if you pop in and order to go you won't be bored! The interior is so cute, just wish they had an outdoor space to sit for summer! Overall I would put this at the top of the list for sandwiches! Next time I want to get their take and bake meals and some gelato!

Gabriela A.

Yelp
Sandwiches are good but staff was not too friendly, the cashier was a little rude! Soup was phenomenal, everything was delicious, buenisimo.
google avatar

Andy Y.

Yelp
Love Lou's! My wife and I were in town for a few days on a road trip and stumbled upon Lou's for lunch. I ordered the Louie sandwich and she ordered the Veggie Delight. We both loved everything about it - a true East Coast Italian Deli sandwich. We loved it so much we drove back here for dinner a few nights later before we left and this time I ordered the full Chicken Parm and she once again ordered the Veggie. Perfecto! We enjoyed it, got "The Bear" vibes and loved how this is helping revitalize the Five Points and RiNo area. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Shannon H.

Yelp
Omg why can't we have Lou's in Noco? I'd back that. Man this place basically invented sandwiches. Just perfect taste, quality, bread, cheeses... so damn good. What I've been missing in my sandwich-loving life. I try to go there anytime I'm in the area. High quality for high standards... just maybe not exactly in the most popular neighborhood lol? But hey, if off the beaten path means cheaper rent and higher quality food, I'm so all about it! Authentic is worth it.
google avatar

Tyler J.

Yelp
Great Italian sandwiches! My wife and I went here for an afternoon bite and were very happy.

brandy z.

Yelp
Love this place, from the decor to the food and service. Chicken cutlet, meatball sub were amazing! Can't wait to try more! Will be back everyone we are in town!
google avatar

Sandy R.

Yelp
This location served fresh sandwiches. They have pretty amazing options of food too. The Chicken outlet was so good and has packed of stuffing. Cannoli was so tasty and pretty great texture in a bite. Well-managed place and servic was fantastic too.

Christian O.

Yelp
Wanted to try this place for years. Drive by it all the time. Finally bothered to stop in. Saw the porchetta with rabe sandwich and couldn't refuse. It was only the best sandwich I've had in my 55 years of existence. No biggie. Got a cannoli and a glass of Sangiovese to complete my 30 minute round trip to Italy. Guys are all also super cool. Not sure if Denver even deserves food this good but I'm glad we have it.

Brian O.

Yelp
Sandwiches are incredible and quite large. Bring your appetite! Also like that they allow for customization to their set sandwich ingredients. Highly suggest trying this place if you're in the area.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
This place is simply amazing. Call them what you want; sandwiches, heroes, hoagies, subs, grinders, submarines, blimpies, po'boys. They know what they're doing here. I will always stop by this place when I'm in town. Guaranteed. I will try all the sandwiches. Great service and friendly staff.
google avatar

Olivia L.

Yelp
Blown away by the Sandwiches. The bread, the ingredients, everything tasted so fresh. Best sandwich I have had in colorado so far. Everything was perfection. We ordered the Louie, the prosciutto mio, & the chicken parm sub. They were amazing. & you need to get the Italian rainbow cookie or a cannoli. If you are planning to eat at home I recommend ordering ahead and just picking up as opposed to ordering in the restaurants. This place was amazing, it's a must try!!!
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
I don't go here often enough but when I do I'm never disappointed. So many options. So good. Price on some items are a little higher I would go here more often.
google avatar

Anita Marie M.

Yelp
The horseradish roast beef is lovely! I will ask for just a bit less veg inside the next time... but if you want a good size side salad go full on. I really want to try all the hot dishes soon. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Lmk if you have had the pastas.
google avatar

Alyssa M.

Yelp
Amazing sub, hoagie, sandwhich, whatever you want to call it. Authentic make. Just expensive $$
google avatar

Miles S.

Yelp
Mozarella sticks, chicken parm, panini's and a variety of Italian sub classics loaded with meats and cheeses. This place'll be crowded and for good reason. Stop by or order to your house. Subs are big enough to cut in pieces and share.
google avatar

Jennie S.

Yelp
Forgot to take photos but the sandwiches are so good. They're also very big so if you know you won't be able to finish I suggest getting half the sandwich. It's still a huge serving and it's delicious. The service was super quick. We actually did take out and it was on time and nice and ready and hot. The ambulance was pretty goodseemed like a normal Italian place. It was delicious I would totally recommend their sandwiches.

Candi M.

Yelp
Exceptional ! Fresh baguettes ! Made me feel like I traveled from Denver to Italy Delicious and authentic ! In the heart of the city !
google avatar

Scottie D.

Yelp
Let me start off by saying this might be the best sandwich shop I've had in my life! I was in town and this place was in walking distance so we decided to try it out. Me and my buddy split the chicken Parm and the Louie. Everything was fresh and they pack the sandwiches! I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a great sandwich!
google avatar

Jeff W.

Yelp
Best meatball sub! We enjoyed our lunch on the patio and the staff is really friendly
