Wowwwwww!! Two big thumbs, toes, and elbows up to LoveSong (yeah, a weird mental image, I guess). While working, I was given a *sort of* random recommendation by a friend to be a guinea pig for a new restaurant down at the Oceanfront for her. My wife and I live down near the beach and are constantly looking for a new place to add to our repertoire. At one point, we were bonkers crazy for Eurasia --but then they remodeled and, for some reason, the passion behind the food wasn't there along with the old decor. Then, eat. an american bistro --but that was inconsistent, heavy, and repetitive. Aldo's because an unimaginative commonplace version of Olive Garden to us. But thennnnnn, we walked into LoveSong.
I'm not even lying for a fraction of a second when I say that this is THE best restaurant in Virginia Beach. My wife and I love doing tasting menus with Chef Zach Close at Glass Light in Norfolk --this rivals it easily. If there was a restaurant in Virginia Beach to receive a Michelin star... LoveSong would be it. Yes, I said it. Not Terrapin. LoveSong.
Everything there is an absolute dream: from the creative and evolving cocktail menu all the way down to the homemade jam on their cheeseboard (the jam is SO good that I could eat it by the gallon and I don't even like jam/jelly). The service is top notch, the camaraderie amongst the staff is infectious. It is impossible not to be in a good mood here.
Three items on the menu worth noting:
* The Mushroom Toast - Do NOT leave here without getting the mushroom toast. The flavors are layered, complex, and rich. Think mushrooms on bread but add Asian elements with bold pops of creamy, flavorful goodness. Even as a mushroom "fence sitter" (mushrooms can be a pretty divisive ingredient, either you love them or hate them), this dish takes the cake for me. Visually stunning and a "party" in your mouth with so much lush depth of flavor.
* The Gnudi - Delicious, homemade, cheesy pillow-y goodness. So fluffy. So amazing. So perfect. Tossed in a house made pesto and sprinkled lovingly with Parmesan cheese (and a dash of dried peppers on top for a surprising, little bite). Get it before/after the mushroom toast. Again, get the freaking mushroom toast (sorry, I keep getting side tracked... did I not mention THE. MUSHROOM. TOAST.?!).
* THE DUCK - Seriously. Don't sleep on the duck. I don't even like duck. And I waited until my fourth visit here (yeah, because I'm like Tyrone Biggums about that mushroom toast --can't stay away, so, YES, four visits within probably two weeks) to try it. The duck is SO SO SO good. Just get the duck.
See? I've planned out your entire dinner already. Go there, get these three things (throw in the cheeseboard and the cake dessert, jack that check up so that way they stay in business forever. I'm serious... don't ruin this for me and the residents of Virginia Beach with halfway decent palates).
Five stars. Two thumbs up. All of that good stuff because this place is IT. Bravo, LoveSong!
