Lovers’ Lane at the Presidio

Beautiful path through eucalyptus trees—perfect for relaxing, breathing deeply, and finding some calm. It also connects directly to Presidio.

I went here to take engagement photos of my fiancé and myself. I'm a photographer so I was able to get the photos done myself. All with a tripod of course. It's very nice and pleasant, and only envy the people who literally live right next to this place. Next time swing by and get some photos taken if your a photographer. Or even anyone who wants a nice background for your phone.

Good for two lovers walking side by side in one direction. However, the two lovers must stagger themselves or step off the narrow paved path to make space for anyone passing going in the opposite direction.

Lover's Lane is one of my favorite places to photograph in San Francisco. The trees always provide a great background, and kids love to make forts with all the spare branches. I always find something new there every time we go.

Easy to miss the turn to get into this area, when driving the car. There isn't a sign that clearly indicates this destination. Parking is only in residential area, so I could imagine it's really hard to find parking on the weekends when people go visit this area. I recommend either walking or taking a bicycle to this destination if you come on the weekends. The walk through the trees is very nice. Two professional photo sessions were going on when we visited. If you want to take pics without anyone in the background, then you have to go on a weekday when the weather isn't that inviting. If you go on the weekend on a sunny day, then the place will attract many people, and your pictures will show people in the backdrop. My first time here, and won't be my last!

Nice trail, easy short hike. The park surrounded with beautiful nature. I enjoyed and loved it. It's difficult to find a parking on the weekend.

People often confused the Lovers Lane with the Wood Line by Andy Goldsworthy as they run paralleled and are literally next to each other. Lovers Lane is this paved walkway along the woods. Although a nice walk, but nothing much to it.

There are two loop trails in the Presidio that include walking along Lover’s Lane (apparently called this because troops in the barracks walked up and down it to meet their lovers in the city). It’s a dead straight path with some elevation with Eucalyptus trees that curve over. From the top end of the lane, it’s about another mile to get to Inspiration Point.

This is one of the oldest footpaths in SF, the original row between the Presidio fort and Mission Delores. Now it's a beautiful walk that you can connect to other trails for an urban nature walk, or use to cut through on for between Pac Heights and the Marina. Depending on time of day and year, you might see a coyote! For this reason it's best to keep pets on leash, but it's a great spot to walk your dog and there is a conveniently located trash can halfway up.

Lover's Lane. It's a great place to take pictures and it has a cute log. This place is very small, so don't expect too much from this area. I went here since I was curious to see why this place is so popular for pictures. It's basically a long and curvy log on the ground that you walk on and take pictures with. I'd recommend this place if you want a couple of cute photos, but there's better places in this city for that. There isn't much to see here and it's a bit dark, but it's still a cool area.

Simple and charming trail lined with beautiful trees and greenery (beware, lots of poison oak around, so stay on the paved path). At one end, there's a boardwalk attached to a footbridge with a creek below. A few info boards along the way too, related to the surrounding nature as well as the history of this pathway used by soldiers to reach their lovers in the 1800's (hence the name). It's only a little over half a mile and not too much of an incline, so it's an easy stroll, but parts of the trail are very narrow, so if you're with your lover, make sure you squeeze tight together and make the most out of your 20-30 minute hike :D

4.5 stars. Kinda hard to find. Simple trail. Easy walk. The trees were the only cool part about the trail/hike. Sorry, I'm used to some pretty amazing Colorado trails/hikes. If you have time to spare, I'd check it out. All in all, I spent about 45 minutes here.

Lovers' Lane is an easy half mile walk straight line down or up the hill in a paved pathway, and it's also fun to walk through the zigzagging path following the wood logs. It is a beautiful scenic walk with the fragrance of the eucalyptus trees, and each breath is full of fresh air and oxygen, quiet and peaceful vibes.

Lover's lane is a gorgeous spot near the Presidio. It's pretty close, but make sure you route it correctly on the map. At first I thought it was just the famous "lane" itself with zig zag trees down the center. But now I've realized that Lover's Lane has an entire hiking trail. We went at golden hour (right before the sun went down) and got some gorgeous pictures. Next time my mom visits I'd love to take her here. It's very quite but I'm guessing it gets spooky at night. I loved Lover's Lane!

So gorgeous and worth a visit! The towering trees make you feel like you're further away from the city than you actually are. You can park for free in the nearby neighborhood and walk over. I've heard that this spot is popular for engagement photos (Lovers Lane really is an apt name), and sure enough, there was a couple getting some photos taken! It can get pretty windy so be careful of falling sticks!

This is a natural art piece made by Andy Goldsworthy. Andy creates environmental art out of natural things. He used trees that had already been cut down in another area of San Francisco (he did not cut down any of the trees for this art), and he had help moving them to this area to put them in a zigzagging line. It's a beautiful, quiet, non-crowded area.

i've always wanted to go here, glad i finally did. we went here over thanksgiving weekend. it wasn't crowded at all for a saturday midday. i was actually pretty surprise. but i've never been here before so not sure how it is over the weekend. we found parking easily. just so beautiful and peaceful to be surrounded by trees. you can either walked by the shady area with the trees. or the sidewalk area. it was really clean. i didn't see one garbage at all. i will def be back!

I recently came across Lover's Lane at the Presidio for the first time during a day of urban hiking last year. After spending the entire day hiking several of the other nearby trails, I found myself at the top of this trail, with about half an hour to kill before my ride picked me up. Half an hour turned out to be about the perfect amount of time for me to hike all the way down Lover's Lane and back. While I've hiked through the Presidio many times before, I had never seen it from this perspective. Coming downhill, I had tall eucalyptus trees on my right, and historic housing stretching out towards the ocean ahead and to my left. Since the sun happened to be setting right as I was coming down the path, the view was kind of magical. Having taken the paved path down, I decided to hike back up through the eucalyptus grove, which was its own kind of beautiful. Weaving through the eucalyptus grove was a snake of fallen trees, which I later found out was called the Wood Line, an installation by world famous artist Andy Goldsworthy. Since the scenery was so beautiful, I was not at all surprised to see several couples doing engagement photo shoots at various points along the path. Overall this is an incredibly beautiful one mile (each way) hike. It is a bit steep, but the effort is well worth the view.

The only way nature should get less than 5 stars is if it's trying to kill you. And even then, it could be a 5-star attempt. This place just felt very surreal. I have never spent so much time trying to get a selfie with trees before. The spot felt very back to basics and allows you to just chill the F out and think. The wildest part is that a bustling part of the city is just a block or three away. Not tough to traverse and a cool spot to kick it like tae bo.

Despite its reputation for being an expensive city, San Francisco has many free things to do and see, such as going to Lovers' Lane! This has been on my list of places to visit for a while and I finally had the opportunity to check it off last Sunday. Lover's Lane is a beautiful and quiet trail located in the Presidio. What makes this unique? The trail is actually an art installation made up of fallen tree trunks to create a zig zag path. Tall trees surround you as you travel along the trail. On a Sunday afternoon around 3pm, there were some joggers and dogs passing by, so if you're looking for a semi-excluded nature spot to take some gorgeous photos, this might be what you're looking for! Be warned: it's WINDY. A tip -- bring a jacket or even better, a windbreaker. Logistically, my group and I didn't know anything about the parking situation near Lovers' Lane. Erring on the side of precaution and since we already had parking at the Palace of Fine Arts (another free place to take pictures!), we decided to walk there, which took about ~20 minutes. The walk was mainly uphill and we underestimated just how many hills and just how steep the hills were in the Presidio! Lesson learned for sure, but it made reaching Lovers' Lane all the more rewarding. Being in Lovers Lane, you can forget that you're in a big city. In addition to taking pretty photos, if you're looking to just escape the hustle and bustle for a second, I highly encourage making the short trek up here!

One of my favorite places in San Francisco! Lovers' Lane is a beautiful and peaceful short trail located in The Presidio. There are several parking lots in the area with a short distance walk. The "lane" is made up of curved logs and tall trees along the path. It is beautiful, unique and peaceful. Be advised, it is a very short walk 0.5 of a mile but it is a great way to begin your walk into other trails. Lovers' Lane connects to several other trails and you can use the AllTrails app to see the whole map of Presidio. I've been there a few times on a Saturday and it is never crowded. During Covid, people are always wearing masks and keeping social distance. You can walk your dogs here but make sure you keep them on a leash.

There's plenty of trails here. I saw a beautiful blue bird and captured a video. I ended up taking the trail to Inspiration Point but before that, I was just walking along. I call areas like this the woods, but it's so pretty and plenty to see even before reaching any of the highest points. Beautiful tall trees surround you. Parking, parking, parking. Well, I got lucky and parked nearby in a neighborhood.

It's an easy, one-mile walk. The trail begins at Funston Ave & Presidio Blvd., crosses a tiny brick footbridge, built in 1885, over a creek running down Tennessee Hollow, passes enlisted men's and officers' houses from the 1930s, and ends at the Presidio Gate. It is said that Lovers' Lane at the Presidio was established in the 18th century as a shortcut used by Spanish soldiers and missionaries to get from the Main Post to Mission Dolores, located three miles south of the Presidio (source: Presidio Trust). It was later used by U.S. soldiers, through the many years, and many wars, as a way to catch the trolleys to meet their lover's in the city. If only the stories the towering trees could tell.. gah my heart. *sighs* In the end, I highly recommend Lovers' Lane at the Presidio. It takes little effort with an unforgettable reward. It also connects to the Wood Line, an art installation by Andy Goldsworthy located in the Eucalyptus Forest. Today, you'll find joggers, birdwatchers, and daydreamers stumbling along this shady, picturesque path. You might just see me wandering around... come say Hi... heck give me a hug. It's nice to be in love, it's not mandatory, but it's nice to be loved... "And the moment I can feel that You feel that way too Is when I fall in love with you..."

A beautiful woodsy area in San Francisco! This was the very first time I visited Lover's Lane at the Presidio. There are a few parking lots nearby or you can also park in the residential area right next to the park area. Headsup - no restrooms in this walk area, so you'll need to go elsewhere if you need to go. There are multiple trails nearby in Presidio. Lovers Lane is lovely with dirt paths and lots of leaves, twigs, tall lumbering trees everywhere. The day I came there were many families and people strolling down. I saw many folks walking their dogs here. Multiple parties were having pictures taken here as well. It is indeed a wonderful spot for great photos! It does seem to get quite crowded, but usually there is enough space between all the people for you to still maintain a safe 6ft away from others. Most folks did not wear masks that I saw on a weekend afternoon. I would definitely come back to visit again sometime. Perhaps in the earlier morning though to avoid the crowds. Highly recommend this trail for a beautiful stroll in nature.

Beautiful day in my birth city! We took a nice stroll at the Presidio and walked the Lovers Lane bridge to the Lover one trail. Got pictures of my family, sat and ate a snack, had a few laughs and headed to the exploratorium. It's a beautiful zig zag trail that is great for pictures. My son was very lucky to have found a Buddha sketched on tree bark on the ground that looked really nice. He was so excited to grab the memoir from the ground. Great trail for kids and pets. It's not a hike in anyway. Very easy short trail but great picture opportunities if you can get it without others enjoying the same scene in the shot.

The first time I came here I thought it was just okay. I had seen pictures of Woodline and thought it was so beautiful but I couldn't seem to find that part of the trail. Woodline is technically a little off to the side in the trees whereas Lover's Lane is a thin cement strip of a path that parallels houses. By itself it's not that impressive compared to other hikes in the city however since it's in the Presidio you can just add on other trails along like the Ecology Trail, Lyon steps nearby, and even walk to the bridge for a longer walk. The path has a surprising incline that does't look steep but is very subtle and gives you a workout.

I couldn't make it up to Muir Woods, but Lovers' Lane at the Presidio makes up for it. I was looking for scenic places to visit on Yelp, and am so glad I found Lovers' Lane! It's beautiful here, and as you walk the curved path, the trees sway and creak to the wind. It wasn't crowded at all when we came to visit on a Saturday afternoon; only one other couple was here for a photoshoot. One of the highlights of my San Fran trip (though there were many)!

One of my favorite humans moved to San Francisco, so one weekend, I decided to venture out and visit her. We went for a walk in her neighborhood and ventured through Lovers' Lane at the Presidio. Lovers Lane is said to be one of the oldest foot trails, a little less than a mile long, and begins at Funston Avenue and Presidio Boulevard. Established in the 18th century, the path was used as a shortcut by the Spanish soldiers and missionaries to travel from the Main post to Mission Dolores. Mission Dolores is located three miles south of the Presidio. Makes a great photo-op for all the social media whores, men and women who are slaves to their cell phones. Featured in my photo, is Andy Goldsworthy's (British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist) art installation of Wood Line -Definitely, worth the short stroll if you're in the area.

Tons of parking available nearby. I paid with my Visa card for parking and walked to the beginning of the trail. I think this is a must go to spot because it is very relaxing and open. It's quiet and family friendly. I saw a few people running by and some walking their dogs. It's a beautiful location worth checking out. It was a peaceful location to visit.

Beautiful short little trail located in the Presidio of San Francisco. The trail passes by lots of beautiful homes on one side and forest groves on the other side. My boyfriend and I wandered over here because we were intrigued by the name. For parking, just enter Lovers' Lane at the Presidio in Google Maps and it should lead you to a small lot next to some homes. It really isn't much a hike because the trail is only around 0.6 miles long. It is more of a nice, peaceful stroll. At the very end of trail, there is a sign explaining the history of Lovers' Lane. It was used by soldiers who were going to visit their lover in the nearby city. The lane also makes a great spot for photos and is a great stop for people who are looking for free activities to do in the city.

One advantage of Living in the city is our Accessibility to Parks...Just 6 blocks away...Park the car and walk our dog all the way to CrissyField on weekends via Palace of fine arts and back...Less people which is very good...

Great stroll near the presidio. And fun place to take photos. The "lane" is made up of curved logs making it fun to walk on or next to. Had no trouble finding it! We parked in a residential area (it was Sunday, so permits weren't required), crossed the street a few times and found our way to the trail. The crisp San Francisco air and beautiful trees will surely make you feel like you're in an enchanted forrest. Not too many people walking about when we went, but enough to make you feel like you're not alone. We also ran into a fox with a tracking device on our way back to the car. He/she followed us a bit but was completely harmless.

I was a little confused when planning my SF itinerary in distinguishing the difference between Lover's Lane and Andy Goldsworthy's Woodline in the Presidio, but after coming here I think the wood line is the the actual display of zigzagging lines, while Lover's Lane is a paved path that happens to run parallel to the wood line. Either way, this is more of a leisure walk with your SO vs. an actual hike. The countless display of tall trees shades you for most of the walk (at least when I went).

We always pass by this Eucalyptus forest on our way to church and finally get to explore it. Very relaxing atmosphere. The area can get very windy at some days.

In the late 1800s, U.S. soldiers used this path to get into town to visit their sweethearts. What a lovely piece of history alongside this beautiful path! The best part of tranquil Lovers' Lane is the "Wood Line" art piece. Follow the calmly twisting path of eucalyptus trunks that were deliberately laid in a gap where a section of non-native cypress trees died out years ago. The coolest part is that the entire piece will eventually decompose over time, eventually leaving no trace of its presence. Note: It's a short path, not a hike. Put this into your itinerary of exploring the Presidio, but don't make the trip across the city just for Lovers' Lane. Make a visit to the El Polín Spring, Inspiration Point, and Lyon Steps while you're up here.

Calm walk. This is not an intense hiking trail, but more of a place to take photos and enjoy the natural beauty in the Presidio. I personally like to just walk here. I started from the concrete streets where cars drove. There might be another path to enter, but I was not lucky to find it. I recommend going to the Lyon Street Steps afterwards. It is another tourist spot in SF where you can see the bay.

Get here early on the weekend. Street parking. Short walk. Paved side walk until the opening for the trail.

This is a cool place to come for a picturesque walk if you need to relax it's not a very long walk though so it's not like a hike or something for exercise. It's shaded so you can stay cool and it takes cool pictures if there's not that many people around, enjoy!

Great for any nice run to walk alone or accompanied. Easy to find with lots of trees and a stunning view~ A must try!

This is one of my favorite places in all of S.F. to take photos. This lovely tree line installation is so peaceful! It's hard to imagine this is in the middle of the city. The golden hour glow is perfect here! However be warned that it can be super wind and cold some months, and can be quite busy with tourists on the weekends. Still a lovely place for photos or for a nice walk through nature.

Tree lover? Come here. I love the greenery and the quiet stroll you enjoy the windy tree log path. I honestly did not know what to expect, but I'm glad we came to see and walk it. It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon. It's not a long walk/hike at all. Enjoy being in the trees. Take your time. You see couples taking wedding pics here. So cute! Note: this is not a hike, it's not long.

I passed this place 2 times trying to find it... as it is a little tucked away from the main trail. If you are coming from the Presideo Gate, keep your eye out for a trail to your right. I went on a weekday and it was pretty empty, so I got to snap a few good shots :)

My boyfriend took me here on our 5 monthaversary. I walked along the windy tree trunks as he held my hand beside me. Perfect photo ops for all you instagrammers! The route was rather short, not even 1mile in length. It is not hard to find either. There are many signs that point you into the right direction. Grab a cup of coffee, your significant other, and take a nice quiet stroll down Lovers Lane.

My girlfriends and I came to visit San Fran for the weekend. We ended up going taking an Uber to the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center. Then we really wanted to visit this unique and super cute trail. We ended up walking to Lovers Lane from the bridge. It was about a 35min walk. It took us to some amazing beach views and past the National Cemetery. The weather was perfect for this hike. Def worth it for the IG pics!

Must do: Bring a date or prepare for a photoshoot! Highlights - A lovely hidden spot that I would have never even thought twice about visiting until I came across a trusty local SF Yelp email reminding me how fresh air is awesome and totally free! :) Yup, this was a spot that was highlighted in the newsletter and I made it mission that weekend to check it out. - It's was my excuse to get out of the house and bring the dog and husband for a family walk on a late Sunday morning. - Dog friendly, especially since we always leash the little guy and not many people frequent unless for a photo shoot or casual neighborhood stroll, so we didn't have any run ins with other dogs or crowds of people. - Great spot for a photo shoot with nicely lined trees and cute zig zag pathway. Serenity at it's finest when you get those few seconds or minutes where no one else is walking past or snapping a photo. Improvements - None really. It's a cool spot, Not much of a hike, but I guess you can make it one if you continue uphill and on other paths. - Probably go early if you want to avoid afternoon crowds and get the perfect photo op. Tips - Parking is easy, there are neighborhood street parking spots nearby since it's near a little community with houses (think of the TV shows, Wisteria lane). - There are maps to find this path along with signs and many other trails to check out.

Its nice! But too much huge mosquitos!!!! I was wearing black legging. We went with my friend to see the place. We sat down to eat our late lunch around 4pm.

This is an adorable little path located at Presidio Park and tucked into the nice Presidio neighborhood. A good friend of mine asked me to go to Lovers Lane and not knowing what it was, of course I looked it up on yelp. From photos I had thought we were about to go hiking in the woods or something with all those tall trees, but it's far from that idea actually. Upon arriving, there was a small area to park, maybe about 6-8 spots. I was happy to see I could park though and that it was in a nice neighborhood. We walked on over and realized that there is a concrete path that runs along the edge of the woodsy part. If you step off the concrete and into the woodsy part, then you'll be surrounded by those tall trees and see that wooden, curvy path that is Lovers' Lane's signature. The concrete path and the wooden path through the trees are parallel to each other, so you'll be going the the same direction regardless. It's a short mile or less I believe, not a hike at all. Literally just a walk in the park.

Lover's Lane is truly a hidden gem buried in the corner of the Presidio. Here you'll find Andy Goldsworthy's Wood Line - a simple but stunning display of winding tree trunks on a hill, sheltered by a grove of towering eucalyptus. A concrete path parallels the mile-long wood line and has little signs along it to help direct you. It'll also help with your walk if you only want to make the trek through the dirt once, but it's a leisurely incline. The space is peaceful and serene with the light breaking through the tall tree branches and you can walk on or beside the wood line as you make your way down. For all you Calvin and Hobbes fans, I can't help but think of the iconic cover shot where Calvin and Hobbes are walking on a log over a stream on their little adventure through the forest. Whether you're here for a photo shoot, with your hubby, or snapping an epic Instagram photo with your friends, Lover's Lane is an overlooked spot that makes for a lovely afternoon stroll and is worth a visit!

This place is located near the Presidio entrance. It's on your left right when you pass through the Presidio entrance. I am only saying this because it can be easily be missed, like we did. Come to find out this was an art installment. We walked on the logs all the way down. We went early but there were photographers taking pictures of it, let's be real... this place is totally IG-worthy so of course, photographers would take pics of this place. It's a great stop while you're tourist-trapping in SF.

Finally found the trail and it was amazing. The long tree trunk in the ground was what intrigues me to hike this place. It's really quiet here which is strange since it's such a beautiful place here. I recommend this trail for those who are seeking for things to do in SF.

Beautiful location hidden off the side of the road. Definitely a place to check out. Would have loved clearer signs to get there. We ended up at the lower end because of google, but worth it in the end.

This is a beautiful and natural piece of art tucked away in Presidio Park. Coming from the Pacific Heights Neighborhood, a walkway will guide you to the Lover's Lane artwork. I've been waiting to come visit here for a while and I'm glad that I did. It's more of a tourist destination spot where you can go for a nice stroll. My favorite part is being able to walk on the carefully placed tree logs that create the art installment. As you walk down the hill, everything is serene and peaceful. A good number of people come here for leisure, but don't worry, their presence doesn't take away from the experience. Be sure to check out the artist's other nearby installment known as The Spire!

We spent some time walking through Lover's Lane last weekend while we were visiting the Presidio area. We did not locate the winding path inside of the trees, but instead - we walked along the paved sidewalk that was marked "Lover's Lane". Was quiet, and actually lots of people were walking along that road too! Great air, and so peaceful. Maybe I'll get a chance to walk the entire length of the lane in the future.

Was able to find this place on Instagram and immediately came to Yelp to find the location! It looks like a typical stroll in the park but at the same time it doesn't... it has a unique snake like log from one end to the other and when walking you're among sky high trees that merely cover most of the sun. It's a great little path in presidio for a morning walk, romantic stroll or even from what I see ... Photo shoots! Oh it is a little dirty to walk on so bring shoes you don't really care much for!
