19 Best Restaurants in Berlin

"Hidden away inside a former late 19th-century women’s prison-turned-hotel in far west Charlottenburg, Lovis is notable not just for its unique, moody environs, but also for the quality of its food—the talented chef, Sophia Rudolph, comes from longstanding Berlin small plates fave Oh, Panama. Rudolph turns out beautifully presented vegetable-forward contemporary German cuisine, using many ingredients sourced from the nearby Brandenburg region. Though you can order á la carte, it’s best to sample her elegant dishes in either the four- or six-course tasting menu (also available in vegetarian versions). Seasonally changing menu items may include mushroom terrine with pickled beetroot and brown butter brioche or braised carrot with tarragon and chicken skin." - Liz Humphreys

"What were your first impressions when you arrived? Hidden away inside a former late 19th-century women’s prison-turned-hotel in far west Charlottenburg, Lovis is notable not just for its unique, moody environs, but also for the quality of its food—the talented chef, Sophia Rudolph, comes from longstanding Berlin small plates fave Oh, Panama. You first walk into a dimly lit cave-like bar with vaulted ceilings, where it’s highly encouraged to stop for a pre-dinner cocktail—perhaps one infused with forest herbs. Beyond the bar, the first part of the restaurant features a huge glass window overlooking a lush enclosed garden. You finally enter into the restaurant’s main room, with beautiful red brick walls and sparkling Boschi lights juxtaposed with small prison windows. It all has a vibe of secrecy and intimacy—like you’re about to experience something very special. What’s the crowd like? The sophisticated German couple, clad in black, at that table is here to celebrate their 25th anniversary. The 30-somethings from LA at the other table are staying at the hotel while exploring the art scene across Europe. The atmosphere is relaxed but with an undercurrent of excitement for the meal about to come. What should we be drinking? Lovis does a strong game in both cocktails and wine—so try both if you can. Cocktails are arranged on a scale from light to sweet and dry to boozy as well as by the main three flavors, many featuring fruits and herbs; the number 13 (dark chocolate, coffee, firewood) is especially delightful. Wines have a heavily German focus, but also include other European varieties from both large and small producers. Though there’s a solid wine list plus a good 10 choices available by the glass, the wine pairing (starting at €48, or $52) is the way to go. Main event: the food. Give us the lowdown—especially what not to miss. Seasonally changing menu items may include mushroom terrine with pickled beetroot and brown butter brioche or braised carrot with tarragon and chicken skin. And how did the front-of-house folks treat you? The servers prefer to be in the background to let their guests focus on their food and their dining companions. But even though the staff are not in your face, they’re definitely on top of things, and the meal pacing is seamless. What’s the real-real on why we’re coming here? Whether you’re celebrating something special or simply want a great meal in unique environs, Lovis makes a lovely stop for a memorable night out." - Liz Humphreys

"An impressive architectural feat – a former prison has been transformed into an attractive restaurant. High ceilings and exposed brick walls, sleek interior design and soft lighting make for a special atmosphere. Diners take their seats in the former lock yard, now covered and fitted with large windows – the "Aquarium" room is truly original. The modern vegetable-oriented cuisine is available as a set menu or à la carte – regular, vegetarian or also vegan upon request. Food intolerances can be accommodated too. A selection of wines from around the globe. Tip: Enjoy an aperitif in the lovely bar, which also boasts a terrace. You can enjoy a night in Wilmina, the adjacent hotel." - Michelin Inspector

Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Berlin! As an interior designer loved the lighting and big windows with the full mirror walls.. food was amazing , too. Reservation needed .

First impression of the place was amazing, however more into the service we were, more disappointed we've been. Design and atmosphere is fantastic. The service as well, very good. The waiter helped us very well with the wine choice and the wine itself was also very tasty. The biggest disappointment was in food itself. We went for 4 course and to be honest it just wasn't it. The best thing about it was presentation. Flavour and proportions of each taste were inadequate. Dishes itself were just not as good as we expected at this type of restaurant. Overall we have mixed feelings about recommendation and if you are for a few days in Berlin I'm not sure if it is the place of choice to be honest.

This could have Ben a 5/5. Drinks where amazing and the wine pairing good. Small things like very dry bread and some courses lacking that little extra takes away from a perfect score. A scallop on the leek pure would have made all the difference. But the facility is amazing. And I would recommend a visit. Do have some cocktails un the bar before, great concept and execution.

the atmosphere was amazing, knowing some of the history of the place. we loved it. the selection of tastes in both the bar and the restaurant was absolutely masterful. we chose the 4 course menu and the wines were selected accordingly. new favourite wine btw (le grand fumé) the different layers and compositions of the various tastes were just artfully arranged. the few hours we stayed here were very well spent. this place made a lasting impression.

Fine dining restaurant that has the service, atmosphere, and presentation of a top-rated restaurant, but the food and wine selection is neither interesting nor tasty enough. Our main course of the tasting menu was mushroom schnitzel, and the batter overwhelmed the mushrooms. The wine pairings—from France Italy and Spain— were surprisingly nothing to write home about.

Really cool restaurant set in a former prison. It is fine dining but without being stuck up. The food was great, we really enjoyed the tasting menu. The wine pairing was good but there were a few plates we thought the wine and food didn't quite click (for our amateurish palates at least). Service was also really good, they were really on top of everything.

The food is really smaller portions and interesting but not special for their tasting menu. After course 4 of 6 we had to ask, if we mistakenly ordered the vegetarian menu only. It is not for me, but maybe others like it. The only female waitresses are friendly and try their best. The location is also posh renovated.

Absolutely fantastic location (former debacle prison), curated interior design (kudos to the lights designer), service was professional and friendly. The menu was perfectly balanced, creative. We enjoyed the food and the wine was perfectly matching. The highlight for me was the root beat tartar starter and the carrot. The main dish with polenta was ok. The dessert was delicious but the plumb coming with it was unfortunately not so tasty. I can recommend the place to others and I will definitely like to come back.
