"Representing the fourth generation at the helm, Roman Pfaff has brought a breath of fresh air to this charming traditional restaurant; the inviting garden terrace is a wonderful spot to kick back with a view of the greenery! The quality ingredients are sourced almost exclusively from the (Lake Constance) region – information about their provenance features on the menu – but international flavours come into play too. In addition to one or two classics, the team cooks up modern-inspired dishes such as "Courgette yoghurt chilled fruit soup, lemon oil feta & almond thyme crunch" and "Roasted Allgäu carp fillet, yellow tomato and caper sugo, herb couscous". Tip: As the restaurant is very busy, it's advisable to book! There are also two rather simple but lovingly designed holiday flats right next door in the charming Hexenhäusle." - Michelin Inspector

Simple gasthouse, ideally located in historic centre. My room was with shared toilet but private shower. Confortable and very clean. Value for money. Lovely breakfast. Check in took a bit longer as the person at reception was also busy with the orders from restaurant, but it was quick enough.

Gasthaus Löwen Restaurant: Unbelievably disappointing. My husband and I were really looking forward to a great traditional meal in the Black Forest. I have lived and travelled in German speaking countries for 20 years and this was the worst experience. The asparagus soup was watered down and had very little flavor; the asparagus looked and tasted as if it came from a can, when you're paying the high prices for fresh in-season asparagus. My husband's pork steak in a spicy sauce was tough (never has had that happen). A pre-prepared meal in a supermarket tastes better. I ordered something I never had before: beek brisket in a horseradish sauce. I asked for the sauce on the side. Tried it and didn't like it. I tasted the brisket; it had no flavor whatsoever. I asked for a brown sauce and it still tasted awful. A waitress or female manager, who was not at all friendly, made me pay for it anyway. She said very condescendingly "you DO know that the brisket is boiled, right?! You're supposed to have it with the horseradish sauce." My husband and I felt like we had been robbed and were being forced to pay for it. I told her I had never in my life given back my meal in a German restaurant. She didn't care. I had been really wanting to have black forest cake for dessert, but thought it could only be mediocre at best, based on what we experienced. Although our waiter was very nice, patient and accommodating, that's the only positive. We went to another restaurant for dessert to end on a tasty note and had a 5 star Tirimisu!

Nice hotel with restaurant on the ground floor. The restaurant was visited by public figures since 80' and food there was quite tasty.

This place has serious issues and you should avoid it. The lack of AC makes the rooms unbearably hot in summer, and not even a fan was provided. To reduce the heat, you have to open the windows, but then you are subjected to the deafening roar from the kitchen ventilation system downstairs. Additionally, you can hear the cooks banging pots, talking, etc. while in your room. The combination of heath and noise meant I could not sleep until 3 AM.The rooms are threadbare and incredibly basic, with decor that looks like it’s from the 70s. The single room is like a glorified broom closet. The bed and mattress were also extremely uncomfortable.||To improve, the hotel should:|1. Install air conditioning to make the rooms bearable during summer.|2. Update the decor to create a more modern and welcoming atmosphere, especially inside the rooms.|3. Provide new, comfortable mattresses.

We were welcomed so warmly by Herr Bauer and all staff were so wonderful and kind, Fantastic atmosphere in the restaurant/bar downstairs and room and shower was clean and comfortable. Brilliant location just a few mins from the train station and all the local sights. One thing worth noting is the steep stairs to the rooms on different floors, not a problem for us with our medium small suitcases though. We were able to leave out bags in a safe locked room after check out to explore the city.

Lovely hotel in the middle of Altstadt. Staff were friendly, the rooms are a good value and the free breakfast every morning (bread, cheese, juice, yogurt and coffee) was a cherry on top, especially for a small hotel like this. Do note that many rooms don't have their own bathrooms and the reception is mixed in with the bar of the restaurant.

We visited the restaurant and we enjoyed the food and atmosphere. Pork's leg and Argentinian steak were perfect. Salads as well.

We stayed here for one night and it was excellent. The location is perfect, breakfast is amazing (very generous for such a small hotel), and staff is very kind. The only issue was that the room was facing the street and there was noise until very late at night, but it didn’t bother us (we were able to sleep fine - but just fyi if you are a light sleeper). We recommend this place if you are visiting Freiburg!
