Absolutely stunning food, all of it, every component, even the thick soy sauce was very tasty. My only feedback would be I wish the grated ginger actual tasted gingery. I had ordered their roasted chicken rice before dining in and trying the steamed version and only realised after that it’s from the same shop. Even when I ordered I remembered being impressed by how flavourful the rice was. The roasted chicken was good too but unless you’re really craving roasted chicken, I’d highly recommend the steamed chicken. It’s very delicious. I had never been into them but this place changed my opinion. The prawn roll was very tasty too. Unfortunately the soup for the macaroni soup I had ordered was waayy too salty though. The restaurant has a cozy, almost homey feel to it. It’s nice for a semi-casual date night or huge gatherings.

Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice is a beloved Singapore institution known for its classic Hainanese chicken rice served with consistency and heart. The poached chicken is tender and silky, paired with fragrant rice cooked in rich chicken stock. Their signature chilli, ginger, and dark soy sauces elevate every bite. The menu also offers roasted chicken, sambal kangkong, and comforting herbal soups, making it a favourite for families and regulars. The restaurant has an old-school charm, with friendly service and a focus on tradition. Overall, it’s a reliable spot for an authentic, satisfying plate of chicken rice any time of day.

I was feeling hungry when I walked past, and the fragrance coming from the shop made me step inside. It wasn’t busy when I entered, but the place started to fill up about 15 minutes later. I ordered the chicken set meal and enjoyed it. The chicken was cooked in the right Hainanese way, and the ginger sauce was different from what I’m used to, but still pleasant. Overall, it’s an air-conditioned, hawker-style chicken rice served in a clean, comfortable dining setting.

Our All-Time Favorite Chicken Rice in Singapore We’ve been visiting Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice for more than 10 years, and it has remained our go-to spot whenever we’re in Singapore. Located along Balestier Road — not the most common tourist area — but absolutely worth the visit. What makes this place special for us is their roasted chicken rice. We’ve tried several other famous chicken rice spots across Singapore, but most focus on the steamed version. Since we prefer roasted chicken, Loy Kee is hands-down the best choice. The consistency here is remarkable — the taste and quality have stayed the same throughout the years, and we’ve never been disappointed with any of our visits. Two thumbs up to the team — please keep up the great quality and consistency. We’ll surely keep coming back!

A must try in Singapore! The place is not fancy but the food is fantastic! Been to many chicken rice places and this is still the best for me. Everything we ordered was super delicious- hainanese chicken rice, roasted chicken, fried tofu, bokchoy, fried prawn roll 🤩 Fyi, they accept card payments.

Google
Jane and James run such a fabulous family oriented restaurant here in the heart of Singapores Novena district. When I sat down after a very friendly welcome a young 5 year old local expressed how he “loved Loy Kee chicken and rice”. They did not disappoint as my 5 year old guide suggested I enjoyed the chicken set for 1 roasted. It was out of this world! Very reasonable price and high on both flavour and value! Then at the end of our meal Jane made a point to ask me if it was to my liking and said they don’t see many North Americans in there area. People if you are at the ALoft or Courtyard Marriot it’s right up the street and if you’re down town it rivals restaurants in the main hub. Highly recommend!!

Google
First time trying this stall, which is supposed to be a famous old name for roast chicken but sadly, it was extremely underwhelming. We ordered the 3-pax roast chicken set, specifically all breast meat. The roasted chicken came out an orange color, completely different from the photos on the billboard/menu. Gave it a try anyway, but it tasted exactly how it looked, bland and tasteless, though some parts were tender. Rice wasn’t fragrant, and chilli was also very subpar. The set meal came reasonably fast, but they forgot our prawn roll and claypot curry chicken (and this was off-peak at 8 pm), so we had to remind them. The prawn roll arrived lukewarm at best, not freshly fried, and the filling kept falling out because it wasn’t wrapped tightly (see photo)… disappointing in taste. The curry chicken came last. The first serving was unbelievably salty (and I usually enjoy strong flavors), so we had return it. To their credit, they were polite and immediately cooked another, which had a normal salt level. Chicken was tender but had a lot of bones, and the curry itself was very average. Service was genuinely 5-star — friendly, polite, and responsive. Unfortunately, the food quality was closer to 1-star.

Missed Loy Kee so much — it never disappoints! The chicken rice is always spot on, super tasty and comforting. Their tofu is my special favourite, can’t skip it every time I’m here. Plus, the service is always friendly and fast. So good!

Yelp
Went there for the chicken and rice and was not disappointed. I was fortunate my hotel was nearby and I was able to eat there multiple times during my visit. Nothing to complain about.

Yelp
Came here for the chicken rice and here's my take on Loy Kee Best Chicken Rice - The name on the sign is impressive claiming to be the best. Was it? They need to rename the restaurant. Chicken was nice (definitely not "the best") but the portions were too small. Rice was nice and shiny but lacking any moisture, like it's been sitting around for awhile. The accompanying soup was a notch better than most chicken rice joints. It contained bits of green onions, tomato, and tofu. Unlike some places where it just seems to be a bowl of water from boiling the chicken. Like the option of indoor or outdoor seating. Nice clean shop. Old school decor. Solid seats and tables. The weirdest part about the whole dining experience at Loy Kee was the wait service. We sat down, the waitress handed us the menus, then just stood there waiting to take our order. Usually I'd asked for a few minutes, but this time I decided not to say anything. A couple of minutes passed and I could hear her sighing. That's when I decided to start reading from the menu again ... from the beginning. Thanks for making your customers feel they chose the right place to eat tonight. Staff needs some training on customer service :-)

Yelp
A taste of old school Singapore! Since my husband was working late and there aren't turkeys readily available on this island, we decided to spend our first Thanksgiving abroad together at Loy Kee. I mean, Hainanese chicken is a perfect substitute for turkey, right?! We were not disappointed. We each ordered their original boneless chicken with all the fixin's and it was absolutely delicious. The portion size was perfect for me; however, for the American appetite it's definitely on the smaller side. I love when my husband introduces me to gems like these on Balastier Road, because it gives me a sense of what Singapore used to be like. Hooray for enduring the test of time!

Yelp
An Oldie but Goodie I've been a fan of Loy Kee for years now. Unfortunately, it's a little far for me to constantly visit them but they are still one of my favorite chicken rice restaurants to visit when I have the craving. With all the chicken rice stalls and restaurants popping up, with one receiving a Bib Gourmand from Singapore's Michelin guide, what differentiates Loy Kee from the rest of the pack? Why it is still my Go To place for chicken rice. Firstly, the rice. Unlike most places that tend to offer healthier options these days, Loy Kee doesn't. Is it sinful? YES! But it's also bursting with flavour and nothing makes me happier than having oily lips with every mouthful of rice (best time to kiss a loved one). The Chicken. What's popular now is boneless chicken rice, where they skillfully remove all the bones, either from the breast or thighs and serve it beautifully presented on a plate. I, on the other hand, love picking meat of the bones as that's where all the flavours are. Despite being a huge boiled chicken fan, I really love the roasted chicken here. The skin is nice and tasty yet the meat remains juicy and tender. We also get more consistency with the roasted chicken as we tend to realize that the boiled chicken is a bit of a hit and miss, with it sometimes being juicy and tender and other times overcooked and dry. The Soups Another trademark of Loy Kee is their soups, with watercress soup being the most popular. The soups are not MSG ladened and my favourite has to be their watercress soup. Served as an individual double boiled bowl or in a traditional soup pot if you order for 2 or more (those old traditional ones our grandmother's used to cook over charcoal), the umami-ness of the pork and the sweetness of the watercress are infused wonderfully into a delightful soup, making it the perfect companion to the chicken rice. The Condiments A chicken rice is only as good as the condiments it comes with and nothing is more important than the holy trinity, Chicken Rice Chilli, Minced ginger and Dark Soy Sauce. While I find the chilli and dark soy sauce here pretty average, the ginger is very nice and adds an even deeper dimension when eaten with the rice. Overview. Again, it's up to personal preference but we really love the rice here and the chicken is good too. Paired along with a soup and the condiment and it makes for one of the best chicken rice in Singapore.

Yelp
My friends and I came here for a relaxing Friday evening, and we were quite satisfied with the chicken and rice "daily plate" that we got to share. All three kinds of chicken featured on the plate - roasted, soy, and Hainanese - and all three were delicious! We are on a budget in Singapore and found the prices at Loy Kee to be very reasonable for the quality of the food. However, we did not appreciate being charged for hand wipes and tap water, which the waitress informed us were free, and the glass of chilled Milo turned out to be hot Milo with ice cubes in it, which was the worst of both worlds. Still, we plan to return at least once more before we leave the country, because it is so conveniently located in relation to our apartment and the chicken is simply great!

Yelp
The restaurant has air conditioning, I ordered the famous chicken and rice set, but disappointed. I had better ones before. The congee was OK. Would not come for the chicken again.

Yelp
I am going to start this new thing where places I eat at really often gets five stars, even if it is partially out of convenience. I have eaten here probably 15-20 times over the past 6 months. The quality is consistently great and for a restaurant where they serve you, it is frankly underpriced, probably because they are making a dish that is so abundantly available at hawker centers. In and of itself, this place is awesome. The roasted chicken rice is tender and juicy. The bok choy has a lot of those crispy onions on it. They must cook the rice in coconut oil or something for it to taste that good. The only mild downside is that I often want more of the condiments than they give on the tray, especially the thick black vinegar.

Yelp
I'm signing up for Yelp just to say how disappointed I am at the serving size irregularity of this establishment. We ordered the $35 for 5 people and even topped up $10 for meat but the next table who ordered individual servings seemed to have more chicken then us. Much much more. Ended up hungry and very very unhappy. We ended up spending $77 for 5 people which is fine, except that we were all still very hungry after the meal.

Yelp
Since chicken rice is almost like Singapore's national food, I believe I have to try this place out. RIce is good, not exceptional. It is of a smaller shorter grain. The roasted chicken is better than the steamed chicken, which is quite dry in my opinion. The sauces were given on those small trays and it is very hard to get the attention of the servers to give me more sauce. I asked once and was not given the extra sauces that I asked for. I did not try other dishes. Hence, my review is purely based on the chicken rice & the service only, I will not come back to Balestier just for Loy Kee chicken rice because about 100 metres away, there is Boon Tong Kee, which is way better than this.

Yelp
Started off with lemonade, holy sweet and sour goodness, got the thirst out of the body quick. The chicken, rice, veggies, soup and the additional pan fried egg, does exactly what they are suppose to-make me happy, and fill up my tummy!

Yelp
Well I thought the service was bad in New York but here I am in Singapore. Really opened my eyes! The worst service ever! I won't be back for sure! The food was not that good.

Yelp
I love the beef stew Asian style... I always chose it over anything else from the menu.
