13 Terrific Tiki Bars in the Bay Area

"The novelty of this tucked away bar is that it’s relatively unknown to SF locals — but after journeying through the Pier 39 gauntlet of tourists and shops, then following signs for the bar through the Players video game arcade (a hellscape of buzzing things and loud children) you’ll understand why it escapes notice. You’ll also require a strong, pineapple-spiked Painkiller or two — and fortunately, Luau Lounge has that aspect covered, plus some bar bites, and pleasant views of the Bay complete the escape." - Caleb Pershan

Google
Harrison served amazing drinks, great conversation, and brought the vibes. Excellent music at this location! I will be back the next time I am in town. The Painkiller cocktail is worth a try.

Takeshi Young

Google
Nice spot located at the end of Pier 39. Good selection of Hawaiian favorites and snacks and a good drink selection including some tasty cocktails. Live music on some nights and good views of the San Francisco Bay. One of the hidden gems on Pier 39.

Ian Mantel

Google
Nice and relaxed eatery/bar at the end of Pier 39. Good views of bay and Alcatraz. Sport on TV. Chowder on offer (of course) along with other dishes.

Ben W

Google
Honestly a pretty cool spot even for a local. Great views and has a huge windscreen so it doesn’t get cold out there. The bartender was a little slow and not rude but some word less than that maybe apathetic. Had some live music out back that was great. Really just a nice vibe. Not a lot of waterfront bars in this city and this is definitely one of them.

Andrew Taggart

Google
Really enjoyable light lunch. Fish Tacos were good and has a great water view if you sit out the back of the pier.

Luis Ramos

Google
Fun tiki bar near the waterfront with beautiful views of Alcatraz. Nachos are top!

Google
Open bar area at the end of pier 39 walk. Sit and enjoy the view of the water, boats, and cruises floating by. As well as alcatraz.

Google
After walking 2.4 miles from my hotel to have dinner here, they were already closed more than 2 hours earlier than their posted time. The hostess indicated that happens with some frequency. The photos and menu looked good online, but don’t waste your time with this place, especially if you are going out of your way.

Yelp
CLOSED! This establishment is not open. Even given the "now open" sign posted on the pier. Website, maps, and google not updated. This is closed. The Players restaurant that is attached to it said the menu is the same, but once we got the menu it was not the same as the menu for the lounge posted on yelp.

Yelp
Great service with a beautiful view of the bay. A good place to grab a cocktail and explore the pier if you're just visiting.

Yelp
One of the many tourist restaurants but the food was very good and they have excellent drinks in a tiki hut decor that's near the bay. I had the Philly cheesesteak sandwich and it was surprisingly good! Soft bread with tasty toppings. I also tried the fish tacos very good. They have a lot of tropical cocktails. Service was slow and they messed up the check so watch out for that. Overall we all had a good experience.

Yelp
This is the hidden jewel on Pier 39! Roberto was awesome, the view spectacular, and a truly peaceful afternoon cocktail was had by just a special, lucky few

Yelp
We came here with a larger group when Fleet Week was happening. We sat at an outdoor table and had a fantastic time. Great location, the wait staff was dynamite! We would have loved to have a more extensive bar menu, the one inside had much more appealing cocktails than the limited outdoor menu. I'm not sure why it's so limited, but the food was great. That's a minor nit as the location and staff is really the shining stars at this place. A+

Laurie G.

Yelp
We decided to eat somewhere on Pier 39. We happened upon this place on accident and glad we did! There's not much direction on what to do (you just sit and the bartender will come over). They had outdoor heaters which was a huge plus! They've also started back with live music. The food was great. The service was good. The drinks were strong and delicious. The view is gorgeous. We did have a change in bartender and never got to order another drink but that was probably for the best.

Yelp
Great find on the wharf for a strong, delicious, authentic mai tai at a tiki hut! $15 Mai tais with a view of the ocean.... on a sunny afternoon. Skip the food. Tried the coconut shrimp. They were over fried and came with a sad mustard sauce. The nice server came back with tarter sauce that was spicy. I wish they had island music playing.
google avatar

Yelp
Orion, bartender that took care of me and my friends... exceptional service. Very attentive, on purpose, and staying busy! He is very productive with his time. I see the quality of the work he does running around the bar. Solid service!

Yelp
After a cross country road trip, my friend and I found ourselves at the Luau Lounge Tiki Bar. Felt like a fever dream, the other guests were so much fun, I immediately loved the ambiance. The live music/decorations made the tiki bar feel so homie and authentic, and it has a great view of the bay. The location is great for tourists as pier 39 is the biggest tourist trap in SF. I ordered a Pain Killer with a floater (by suggestion of someone at the bar) and I seriously think the Pain Killer was the best drink I have ever consumed. It was lethal, could hardly taste the alcohol and was so refreshing on a hot summer SF day. The pineapple/coconut ratio was perfect, giving it a tang, but not enough to make you pucker up. Besides the taste, the presentation was phenomenal. they really took into consideration all of the details you don't think of. The flower, lemon sliver, and foam on top made for a perfect photo opportunity on top of the sweet taste. 12/10 would return next summer.

Yelp
Hidden at the very back of Players Sports Grill and Arcade is a fun little Tiki bar, the Luau Lounge. In reality, it's still a part of Players, but it has a fun and festive feel, with a thatch roof bar and appropriate island themed music. Tiki drinks were surprisingly good. We had the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai and Kahiki Kai (rum with coconut, banana, and pineapple), with the Kahiki Kai being my hands down favorite. Food was okay, and the same food menu as the rest of Players, so mostly burgers and fried foods. Would have liked to see a few items special for the Luau Lounge, even something simple like spam musubi or Loco Moco. Service was great for our visit, but it appears the bartender takes care of all the tables in the back as well. So if you come when it's busy, you may have to wait a little bit. Our visit was on a much quieter evening, so everything was ordered and brought out quickly. Definitely recommend for a fun drink at the bar with a beautiful view of the bay...and then go get food somewhere else.

Yelp
The only reason I gave a 2 star is because while I was at the bar, the manager Robert(manager), pretty much scolded a waitress In front of us because she was behind the bar. This poor girl was just putting away glasses. Robert, "YOU ARE A DIK!" I'm a manager and I never have "conversations" with my employees in front of customers! Do Better! Plus, put the glasses away yourself if she can't help out and do it!!

Courtney S.

Yelp
Wow! Such a hidden gem! I am a huge Hawaii fan and love tiki bars. The luau lounge has cute tropical ambience, good service, a beautiful view of the bay and delicious drinks. When we walked in, we were a bit put off by the arcade you have to walk through to get to the lounge, but were glad we gave it a chance. I also wasn't expecting to eat the most delicious pizza I've found on the West Coast. My dad is Italian from New Jersey so I know a thing or two about good pizza. They nailed it.
google avatar

Sheral B.

Yelp
The drinks were great. Proper Tiki Bar drinks that were beautifully made and tasted delicious. If you're looking for a relaxing cocktail and apps lounge try this. Shout out: their tempura green beans were surprisingly delicious! Our waiter was very patient and did a great job!
google avatar

Mandy L.

Yelp
Tucked in the back within Players, the restaurant connected to the arcade at the end of the pier. The trick to this spot is checking in at Players host table to get into the Luau lounge. If you walk to the back no one will help you if you want a table. You can walk up to the bar though without needing assistance. Drinks were decently priced considering the location since it is in the middle of Pier 39 and tourist Mecca. I got the Royal Hawaiian Mai Tai which was pretty delicious. We didn't eat just had a respite cocktail before moving along. One tip - you can walk around the back along the waterline if you don't want to fight the masses going back up through the pier; so much more room to walk. Lol

Yelp
This location has great good, delicious drinks and great views; unfortunately, the service is very poor. I didn't know whether or not to seat myself when I first arrived, therefore, I walked to the bar to check. After about 20 minutes seated, I went to the bar to ask for a menu. The waitress finally came over (1 bartender and 1 waitress for the 11 tables). I also had to go bad to the bar a couple times to order my own drink and pay the bill. The view was beautiful, but the windows definitely needed cleaning/ sanitizing. Overall, if you're just looking for simple, good food and drinks and not focused on the experience: stop by.

Yelp
Not sure what previous reviewers are complaining about. Drink prices are similar to what is charged around the city BUT they are 3x the size. And as others have mentioned, really well done. Service was great. Its not haute cuisine by any means but the coconut shrimp were incredible! If you are in the mood for tiki drinks, strongly recommend!

Carolyn S.

Yelp
Our bartender was amazing!!! He made us so many specialty drinks! Shoutout to Orion for hooking it up!!! The views are amazing and the drinks are better!!!

Yelp
I just don't know how a Restaurant can be open without having bathroom facility inside? I mean were do waiters and waitresses go to wash their hands?? I did not appreciate having to go all the way out of the restaurant waiting in line for the outside bathroom. Views from where tables are set are amazung . I must tell you tho the French fries with fresh garlic is out of this world!!! even though I did not like to situation of not having a bathroom around or too many screeming kids, I would definitely go back just for the French fries. Still suffering from Covid so don't count on tap beer

Yelp
Dear Tiki Gods and various rum spirits: finally the heart of Tiki in San Francisco! I was exploring pier 39, and went in deep...past the restrooms, past the Halo Fire Team arcade game, deeper into the bowels of the arcade just to see what was there. Photo booths, a giant wheel of fortune and ...and what!?!? A tiki bar? Suddenly from nowhere a beautiful Tiki Oasis arose...complete with waterfront seating, real Tiki music playing, grass thatch roofed bar. The works. And get this: IT IS OPEN AT NOON. That beats such Tiki wonders as Last Rites, Smugglers Cove (All Hail the King) Zombie Village and my haunt, Pagan Idol. Nothing beats sipping on a Painkiller chock full of Plantation OFTD in the middle of a work day. This Tiki Bar, with its true hideaway nature, fan-taste-tic views, and great chill vibe is the spot to have a rum and fruity libation. Circle past Union Square. Lock up the idea of going to Alcatraz. Wait on the Golden Gate. Get your adventurous party to Luau Lounge while the headhunters and rumrunners aren't looking.

Yelp
The service is a joke, and I am talking specifically about the curly hair bartender at the back section near ocean view tables! We walked in and my husband went to the bathroom so I decided to order us some drink. Waved at the waiter/bartender after 2min sitting there, he said "I'm on my way", which is ok, but he stared at me unfriendly for 2 second, and gave me a very uncomfortable feeling that he was trying to intimidate me away. My husband came back, still no service, so I decided to walk up to the bar area and order us drinks, once again he said "I will be on my way", ok I went back to the table. Then I heard him complaining to his co-worker that we were being impatient. Another 1 min went by, he walked over, with the long unfriendly stares underneath his mask, started taking our orders with the passive aggressive attitude, and at the same time mumbling about me not reading the menu in advance (I asked for a Pilsner but did not specify the type, so I opened the menu again), that's when my husband got mad and told him "sir, I don't like your attitude" and asked me to leave. Passive aggressive behavior shows up again: "I wish you guys have a good day, but I told you I was on my way" lol I said:" NO, you said that 5 minutes ago." and then left. The whole experience was beyond unpleasant, and if I can rate 0 I will.

Yelp
Dropped by for a quick drink with some coworkers while we were away at a conference. This place is situated right on Pier 39 so it's definitely a touristy place. We ordered just drinks, my one colleague ordered a bloody mary and I guess he's visited a few times and has always had it. They made a mix a bit funny and added horse radish which totally ruined it for him. To me, this is just a tourist trap, great location, but nothing to swoon over.

Yelp
The definition of a hidden gem? Luau Lounge on Pier 39! I happened to look up from where I was standing on the shady deck at the end of the pier and saw a faded red awning with a hula dancer and "Luau Lounge." I quickly looked it up on Yelp and read that it is located inside the Player's Sports Grill & Arcade, formerly Bubba Gump's. You need to check-in at the host station for Player's, and they will take you back to this wonderful faux tropical hideaway. We only had to wait about 5-10 minutes before a table freed up, which was great considering it was a football Sunday AND the Blue Angels were performing for Fleet Week. With that being said, we got the best table next to an open window facing the water that provided awesome views of the tight-formation and low-flying jets. Service was spectacular (sorry I can't recall our guy's name). We only ordered cocktails since we had just had lunch elsewhere. There are no prices on the drink menu, so I guess, if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it. LOL! All of our drinks were beautifully presented with those gorgeous magenta flowers that just screams "ALOHA!" We had the "tropical itch," "royal mai tai," and a "pina colada." Much mahalo to our server/bartender for making the best tiki drinks I've ever had (even compared to drinks in Hawaii)! You could actually taste the alcohol and not just sugar. I loved my "tropical itch." Not only was it strong and delicious but was served with an actual wooden backscratcher!!!! Funny thing is, I was in need of one! I can't believe I've never known about this hidden oasis on Pier 39! Definitely will be a destination every time I visit San Francisco.

Yelp
This place is located right on pier 39 which is one of the tourist attractions in sf. I grabbed a bite at the nearest restaurant that was along the way while we're at a pier 39. Food and drinks were pretty good. We ordered clam chowder, ahi poke, apple walnut salad, biscon burger, bacon Bloody Mary, stout and mojito. A classic brunch beverage which is a Bloody Mary that pairs perfectly with savory plates, like what I got the brunch menus here. This good looking Bloody Mary was a blend of mild spices with classic flavors. Customer service was good. I would come by again given the chance.

Yelp
It's great to have a fun bar at the end of Pier 39! The area deserves something better than Bubba Gump's. Awesome view. Great live music. The drinks are overpriced, but that's to be expected. They also close very early.

Ron D.

Yelp
Food not great but the Mai tai cocktail was the worst I have ever had. Premixed and no dark Rum Float. Terrible for $15 ask for a float an extra &10. So $25 for a horrible dtink

Vilma R.

Yelp
If i could give them no stars i would. We walked in, tables were empty but dirty. We didn't know wether to sit on our own or wait: the bartenders just looked at us and acted as if we didn't exist. We sat ourselves, we really wanted to try the drinks. My husband cleaned the table himself. After 5 minutes still no one brought a menu. My 2 year old was getting super hungry and fussy. We kept looking around and the girls seemed to be avoiding us. We were there for about 10 minutes with NO SERVICE. We decided to leave. Never coming back. Horrible service. Dont waste your time
google avatar

Eydie R.

Yelp
This place... Smdh.. I should have known when we walked in and only 4 people were in the place that it was going to be a bad idea. Seriously, the drinks were horrible and the Ahi poke they served me was so chewy and tough I could barely eat it. Not sure I'd recommend this place. I'm hoping they were having an off day. I hope things improve.
google avatar

Joy L.

Yelp
Ranks as the worst tiki themed lounge in the Bay Area. The poke bowl was greasy tuna in a bowl without any other ingredient and the hurricane drink I had was awful. Really disappointed. Nice view, though.

Mike R.

Yelp
che servicio malo no tiene lás bebidas que ponen en el menú no lo tienen y las comidas se tardan mucho ya va 1 hora y ya llegaron otra personas y les llegó primero la comida a ellos que a nosotros
google avatar

Sayuj P.

Yelp
Awesome drinks 5/5 stars but terrible food Had Grilled Salmon and Tacos- small portion, bland taste, nothing special
google avatar

Stephanie R.

Yelp
We just stumbled upon this place yesterday, and we had the best experience! The food and drinks were delicious and we got to sit outside with a spectacular view of the bay and Alcatraz. There were 3 of us (me, husband, & 12 y/o son) and we walked right in with zero wait since the tables are first come, first served outside. You have to go order from the bar but they let you keep your tab open if you choose. During the entire time we were there, we got a virgin strawberry daiquiri and cheese fries for our kid, which he absolutely loved! (And he's one picky kid!). My husband and I had the bbq chicken pizza, royal mai tais, piña colada, and the painkiller between the 2 of us. These drinks were made to perfection. We just went to Maui for our honeymoon in May so the Luau Lounge was a great way to bring our tastebuds back to the tropics as part of our mini vacation to SF. Definitely recommend this place overall!
google avatar

Kat Z.

Yelp
This place is amazing! It's open both indoors and outdoors. Cass did an exceptional job greeting us at the door, picking us the best table with breathtaking views and constantly making sure we were having a great experience. Food and drinks were delicious! We had top shelf long island, 1944 mai tai, chicken tenders and baja fish tacos. We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Binita S.

Yelp
This is a great bar on the Pier. Its like a Dave and Busters in the East Coast. Its a restaurant with a full bar and then games to play while you wait or after wards if you prefer. When you walk to the end of the restaurant/bar there is a separate bar which is a tiki themed bar. The front of the restaurant just has a standard bar with tables. However, if you want a view of the water sit in the back bar . It is called a Luau Lounge however it is still in the Players sports bar and arcade. Came here just to play and have a drink so ordered a cheese flatbread and a Tiki Champagne cocktail. The cocktail had Malibu rum, lime juice, strawberry coulis topped with Kenwood sparkling wine. This drink looked amazing and tasted just great. It was light and sweet and really hit the spot. I think if I sat there for longer and ordered a few more of these they would have gotten me drunk. I am sure however it would take many many of these to do that. The arcade had a lot of games from hockey to basketball to a "shooting range" , pac man, you name it! It was a great place to spend some time, grab a drink and relax. Highly recommended spot to go to .
google avatar

Cassie G.

Yelp
Not good at all. The clam chowder had no flavor and had to wait 15 minutes for a refill and another 20 for the check after. Would've rather waited 2 hours for Bubba Gumps

Ashlyn W.

Yelp
Food wasn't good at all. We have pasta, wings, soup, fries, and salads. All horrible. Definitely paying for the pier experience not the food or definitely not the service.
google avatar

Lisa F.

Yelp
We just came here as a tourist and was totally enjoying the view and ordered some drinks for Happy Hour....although it took awhile to get the bartender's attention. (Prices reasonable, actually). There was a buffet out and my sister decided to help herself and make us a plate. We have frequently seen establishments that do this. My father immediately started tasting when the bartender came over, told us it was from a party and she took the plates away from us (after we had eaten some). I've never seen anything like this most awful customer service. She proceeded to take the food away on a cart, spilled a tray of calamari on the door, picked them up with her hands and put them back on the tray and took it away. She kept saying "someone paid for this". I sure hope they weren't packing it up for who paid for it! Despicable, nasty behavior witnessed at this bar. PS Beer was cold
google avatar

Michelle R.

Yelp
This place is really cool. It's at the end of Pier 39 downstairs through an arcade and at the very back of the pier. You can see straight out to Alcatraz and the windows open and giving you a great Breeze. I tried the pu pu platter which had 3 large pieces of boneless fried chicken, 2 pork tacos and ahi tuna over seaweed salad. Everything was just okay. There wasn't much flavor. There was a small little side of very watery ranch dressing. The Poke didn't have any soy sauce, and the tacos were pretty dry. It needed some more sauces for sure.

Christina C.

Yelp
Honestly the good wasn't too bad but the girl in the front seating guests was so rude. We never got napkins or silverware either with our meals, we had to look around and find our own.
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
Holy crap the drinks are expensive here. Ok maybe not insanely expensive, but more than usual. Guess that's what we get for playing tourist. $15 for each piña colada, but it's only $9 in Walnut Creek. Great views of the ocean Right inside the arcade. Don't get it confused with the regular sports bar.
google avatar

Mary W.

Yelp
The pictures on this page show an indoor venue. I don't know if it is just Covid19 related or not, but the service is outdoor. We had a flatbread pizza that was quite tasty. The server was knowledgeable and friendly. The price was San Francisco tourist area reasonable.
google avatar

Ruben A.

Yelp
Hello, my friend accidentally left their bag here at closing. When we went back for it the bag was gone. We were the last people to leave the outdoor enclosed lounge area today. Could the staff member who found a small Nike zip up bag please message me. Thank you.
google avatar

Katrina O.

Yelp
Nope! Skip this place! I waited for 20 mins for a cup of cold stale coffee because I couldn't order just a glass of wine without a giant meal, and then they never reheated it or gave me a fresh cup when I asked. Horrible service and what we did order was less than worth the price.

Chris R.

Yelp
So fun. Just go. Here's the thing. You need to go ALLLLLL the way to the end of Pier 39. You go into the Players Sports bar or something. Then, you go paaaaast that bar. Then you are in this arcade. It's got a giant space invader which is...random. Like, bring the kids to the arcade that's past one bar and right before the other? Whch brings us to the other bar. So, you go past the arcade and then, THEN...you are at the Luau. I went on a Friday. They had a guy with a guitar doing great covers (excellent version of Walls Fall Down by Tom Petty). The drinks come in fun glasses, there's a great view of the water and we had a great time. It wasn't busy which...maybe not so great for the Luau, but it was perfect for hanging out with a bunch of friends.

Vee S.

Yelp
Decided to take a walk down the Pier and found Luau Lounge with a decent outdoor setup so we decided that's where we would stop for lunch. We ordered Garlic Fries to start with some waters and a couple soft drinks. Soft drinks are canned and you have to ask for a cup with ice, no big deal. We ordered a steak, 2 bread bowls, a burger and kids chicken strips. Burgers bun had MOLD. Pointed it out to one of the waiters/food runners who said he did not think it was mold but would take it back and have it remade. Just a few minutes later the chef came to our table to apologize because "that might have actually been mold" Says he's rushing the order and will have a new burger sent to the table ASAP. The bread bowls were hard as a rock as if they had been sitting out for a day. Clam chowder was okay, nothing special tasted like your typical Progresso. Steak was ordered well done, came out medium/medium rare. Took 2 bites before deciding not to eat because the meat had a funny taste like it just started to turn but was cooked and served anyways. Kids chicken strips were served with tartar sauce..? Fiancé decided to try one since his steak was not good only to spit it out because it was chewy with a fishy taste. So by now we've wasted an hour and a half, we're still hungry and will still have to stop somewhere else to grab something for at least my 5 year old who was still hungry after eating nothing but fries since it was the only food that seemed safe. This place NEEDS a visit from a health inspector before someone really gets sick. I understand businesses are doing what they can to continue to operate through this pandemic however serving food that should have already been thrown out is absolutely not acceptable!
google avatar

Yvonne M.

Yelp
Bar/lounge tucked in the back of Players Restaurant and arcade on Pier 39. I really enjoy the ocean views at Luau Lounge and it's more intimate setting. The service is great. The food is the standard you would find at a tiki lounge. I ordered vegetable pot stickers and garlic fries. Food wasn't great but the drinks, service, and atmosphere will keep me coming back.
google avatar

Kristina H.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Great atmosphere over the the water. You can see Alcatraz in the back. It's in the sports bar so walk in the back by the games!! Won't be mad about it!
google avatar

John R.

Yelp
Got seated here despite attempting to eat at the half empty Players Arcade. Not sure what was up with that. What gives this place zero stars is being ignored for ten minutes while the sole server/bartender entertained himself and his friends by spinning plates instead of serving customers. What a cluster F. Just close if you don't want customers. Then you can spin all the plates you want in peace.
google avatar

Jeff E.

Yelp
It is a hidden gem if your visiting Pier 39 . It through Bubba Gump's and the arcade all the way in the back . Good food and cold drinks with all that can be expected at Bubba Gump's .
google avatar

Sop S.

Yelp
I recently visited Tonga Room and was extremely disappointed. I needed to find a tiki bar/lounge to make up for such a bad experience. Found Luau Lounge at Pier 39 and the experience was amazing. We had the best bartender who made the best drinks ever! Phillip is the man. When he says he makes good drinks, he is a man of his word. We had him keep it coming for as long as the kids' game cards lasted in the arcade. The lounge is tucked away in the back area of the arcade with stunning views of the bay. If you need a place to escape while the kids are at the arcade, Luau Lounge is the spot.
