"Neighborhood Italian spots are a dime a dozen in Chicago, but they are almost all worth knowing, especially when it’s a BYOB. We discovered Lucia’s a few years ago, and it’s been around since a few years before that. The homey Italian spot is run by a an older Italian couple, and the low-key ambience feels like you could easily be dining in grandma’s dining room, if grandma had an unlimited booze policy and charged you to eat. There’s a small deli in front, and a more formal sit-down restaurant in the back. In reality, they are two totally different places. During the afternoon, feel free to drop by the deli part for some serious take-out and easy Italian style sandwiches, both cold and hot. Everything from salami and capicola to grilled paninis like the da rib-eye steak sandwich. Or do we what we like to do and make last minute reservations in the late afternoon or early evening when you need dinner plans and are in a bind. That usually means scrounging around for a last second spot to host a BYOB dinner, or when we specifically need something in this part of town for dinner and a few drinks without running up the bill. Lucia's is the kind of place worth having in your rotation for these particular occasions, even though it isn't necessarily one to wow you or anyone else with groundbreaking Italian food. But Lucia's is still enjoyable. It's small, cozy, and candlelit, and we consider it in the same category as other family run Italian restaurants like Briciola or Caro Mio. And just like the other two, we generally have a pleasant time here. It's all about having the right expectations. Anyone who manages to keep a restaurant running for over 10 years is doing something right, and the people in the neighborhood will probably say Lucia’s won’t let you down. Stick to the classics, bring yourself plenty of red wine, and try not to get annoyed by the fact they only accept up to two credit cards. It's a family place, after all. Food Rundown Calamari Fritti We are normally big on the grilled calamari train, but here, we recommend getting an order of the fried stuff to start. It's a good way to go. Involtini di Melanzane If you're looking for other appetizer options, consider this eggplant stuffed with cheese and topped with a light marinara. Gnocci alla Romana The gnocci is probably our favorite item on the menu at Lucia's. Simple and homemade potato dumplings in tomato sauce with fresh basil and parmigiano cheese. Rigatoni alla Casalinga Into creamy, buttery sauces? This is the move. Rigatoni pasta with portobello mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, and peas in a heavy cream. Saltimbocca alla Romana The usual veal scaloppini with prosciutto and sage that's sauteed in a white wine sauce. Served with roasted potatoes and veggies too, and an overall safe bet. Pollo alla Marsala This is the move if you're a chicken dish kind of guy or gal. A sautéed breast with mushrooms in a marsala sauce, plus a little sautéed spinach." - Sam Faye

Met a friend for appetizers and wine, then decided to bring my lady on a dinner date. We were so happy that we returned the following day to try something else. Everything was delicious, the atmosphere was charming and the service was excellent. BYOB makes it an affordable option. I want to return to try everything Lucia's has to offer including the sandwiches on the front deli side of the business. The owners are down to earth beautiful people.

Google
Cute spot for a quick deli lunch. We tried the Lucia sandwich (pretty classic Italian sub) and the chicken parm. Compared to other Italian subs in the city, I liked that it wasn’t dry. Flavor was there and the bread was very soft. Perhaps too much bread but overall would definitely come back. The chicken parm was also great but I feel the bread is almost too soft for a sandwich that wet. I would personally skip the warm sandwich next time. Looking forward to coming back!

This place was so yummy and the experience of eating here was so lovely. We got the calamari. Did you know it's not supposed to be hard and chewy? The server brought us two things of bread!! Two! The gnocchi was so so good. I wish it had a little more sauce because the sauce was so absolutely scrumptious. Wish I had room for dessert.

If you’ve never been to Lucia’s, I suggest you drop what you’re doing and run. I swear by that place!! I’ve been dining at Lucia’s all my childhood and I seem to never get tired of anything from that restaurant. Sandwich’s you must try : Grilled chicken sandwich, Sams sandwich on the focaccia bread, Lucia’s favorite & The Ribeye sandwich! Hospitality at Lucia’s is also great! Feels like home. I stopped by today 3/3 Friday around noon, I placed my order to go for all the sandwiches above (4) paid and notified them I’d be back. I took around 20-30mins to return and realized my order was not ready. In the matter of 15mins the restaurant was so full!! Like I said I’ve been dining at Lucia’s for ages and I couldn’t feel more satisfaction at just viewing how outrageously busy they were. Such a proud moment. I love small businesses but Lucia’s will always hold a special place in my heart. I hope this restaurant continues to grow, best wishes.

Google
Although this is a fairly small shop, the sandwiches are huge on flavor with the old school italian feel. Ordered the Yale Special with proscuitto, pesto mayo and fresh basil, which was all fantastic. But the star was the fresh mozzarella (bocconcini). The creaminess offset the salty prosciutto with the fresh bread binding it all together. Chips was included (was not expecting that - nice). Will definitely need to try their dinner menu!!

Thanks Lucia for a wonderful meal Friday night. Our veal and gnocchi dinners were delicious and the appetizers were terrific! Your desserts are the best. Everyone at our table had a great time-Thanks! Jim and Bridget P.

Google
I checked out this spot for dinner and the setup is nice here. I got a patio corner seat outside which was pretty dope. I started with the cesar salad which I smashed it was good and the cesar dressing was really good too 8.3. For the main, I went with the Bucatini all’ Amatriciana Thin, its spaghetti-shaped pasta tossed in tomato sauce with sautéed Italian bacon and onion and topped with cheese. I had to add a little salt n pepper to bring out the flavor but overall this was great. 8.5. Overall spot nice I enjoyed the customer service and how nice they were. 8.7.

Google
I **loved** Lucia's! I stumbled upon this gem and feel like I won the lottery! BYOB, homemade pasta, everything prepared with love... restaurants like this built and fed the neighborhood. We'll be back, again and again. Grazie!

Yelp
Overall fantastic! Would recommend and will return. Had my birthday party with a large group in the back room spread across multiple tables. I worked with the owner to confirm the space and pre-order appetizers, whereby the group would order their main courses off the menu. From the planning, to the pre-party visit I chose to make (the Sam's Sandwich is excellent!) to the day of execution, all seamless and easy. Daniel, our day of server, and the kitchen staff, did an overall excellent job! Everyone enjoyed the food: apps were grilled and fried calamari, eggplant with ricotta, sautéed shrimp with artichokes and mushrooms and bruschetta. All delicious! Various main courses were ordered and everyone enjoyed their food. My main course was the veal saltimbocca. I subbed out the potatoes for spaghetti with garlic and olive oil - the entire dish was excellent! It's a BYOB with no corkage fee. Daniel did a nice job with the buckets and containers of ice to keep our drinks chilled. There are a couple close-by liquor stores if you forget your preferred beverages at home. Desserts were excellent as well! One of the most memorable birthday gatherings I have had! Only one small opportunity, as it was a hot and humid day and evening, is the small air conditioner fighting to keep the back room cool, as it got a bit warm not only due to my party, but other guests at other tables, along with the back door to the patio continuing to be opened and closed and sometimes left open. The room was 75 when we sat down and it was 80 towards the end. Just something to be aware of.

Yelp
We visited Lucia's on Thursday night. It was pretty busy as the backside dining room was filled up for dinner time. There was only one waitress so it took her a bit to serve us. The owner was helping with refilling water. We ordered grilled calamari for appetizers. It was very tender. We finished it easily. For entrees we got gnocchi, linguine with clams, risotto with seafood, linguine with seafood and also a salad. Gnocchi was delicious! It's a little chewy with the perfect amount of cheese. Linguine with clams was not bad. Risotto with seafood was delicious too! I won't mind eating their Gnocchi and risotto with seafood again if I come back here.

Tim W.

Yelp
If I go too long without a deli sandwich from Lucia's, I start having dreams about them Very good brownies too

Iris S.

Yelp
This place is what wicker park is all about! Love how small and intimate this place feels and the deli + restaurant combo. Great neighborhood restaurant run by an older Italian couple and would highly recommend this place. All the pasta dishes are well made and tasty. Fan of the byob aspect. Go check this place out!!

Yelp
Fabulous food and espresso. The tiramisu is as good as it gets. I want to work my way through the whole menu..

Paige K.

Yelp
So we ordered takeout via DoorDash for pickup from the deli at about 6pm on a Wednesday. Did have me a pickup time of 5:48 but with no notice my order was ready at 5:34. I arrived around 5:40 and had a similar walk back. When I opened the sandwiches, the Italian beef was warm but the ribeye was straight up cold despite being a hot sandwich. It looks old like it had been sitting around. I re-toasted the sandwiches (split with my husband) before eating. The Italian beef was super good! Maybe the best I've had in the city so far but the ribeye just really fell short. It was one slab of meat that just wasn't fresh. There were bites that were good but others that were chewy or tough. Just can't recommend this one... but the Italian beef is worth the order. We got soup for our sides and both were tasty! I had the chicken noodle and my husband had the tortellini.

Yelp
Holy Italian Sandwich, fat man. I've been here a couple of times now and tried their sandwiches. They are huge but not overly filling to where you feel bloated. Just filling in, they're wonderful tasting, too. Don't go to Jimmy John's or quizno. Or any chain like that garbage. go get you a really good Italian sandwich made by Italians.

Stephen F.

Yelp
This was just some of the best Italian food I've ever eaten. Everything tasted like it was prepared from scratch. I got this chicken dish and it was drowned in the most amazing sauce. The salad was amazing too, the vinaigrette was definitely homemade. This is another BYOB establishment, but there is a bottle shop just a few doors down. I got a bottle of red wine to wash it down, an amazing time. The service was good and the dining room is not large, but I think they also seating up stairs.

Alissa V.

Yelp
Sams sandwich. Robert's special. The bruschetta pasta salad. I love that it comes with chips. Thursday night special is my favorite. Chicken penne pasta with vodka sauce and comes with bread and butter. Their tuna has olives in it which i don't like but hey. Italian beef is not the best but good. I love Lucia's. Convenient pick up with a little temp parking space. Nice people running the restaurant for a long time.

Humza K.

Yelp
Had a great time! Calamari and the mushroom risotto were delicious. The atmosphere was super cozy and the service was great. The old couple that runs the restaurant is adorable. I come here for their deli sandwiches sometimes and those are great too. Support this business!

Alex H.

Yelp
The Sam's sandwich on Focaccia, that's all you need to know. Perfect size, always leave full

Yelp
Overview: this small, intimate Italian restaurant is worth the try. The service was slow, however, the food was enjoyable, Our waitress provided great recommendations. The food was good, I definitely had some standout favorites. See below for my food reviews: -Fried Calamari: it was lightly breaded and perfectly crispy. With the hint of lemon- this was a win. But I am biased toward calamari- I love it. -Bucatini all'Amatriciana: the pasta was cooked to al dente which is my preference. My one issue with this dish was the red sauce was a little sweet in my opinion because of that- I personally will not order this again when I return -Ravioli di Zumba con prosciutto e Noci: WOW- this was a win. I loved the brown butter sauce and the ravioli was excellent and the crunch of the walnuts added another texture to elevate this dish overall. -Pollo al Marsala: this was a very standard dish but the chicken seemed a little over cooked. I did appreciate that it was pounded thinly but wish had a little more flavor. If you go to visit Lucia's- I would recommend sticking with the pasta dishes- those were my favorite.

Yelp
I love trying new places for subs and came across this one on Ubereats one day. My favorite thing that I've tried from here is the Yale special sandwich (prosciutto, bocconcini, basil, tomato, pesto Mayo). There was also some giardiniera on there that made the sandwich so flavorful, it didn't overpower the sandwich either which I have noticed some sub shops are guilty of doing. I could eat 5 of these it was so good and fresh. The sandwich comes with classic lays potato chips. We also ordered the potato salad and both really liked it! It's very creamy and delicious. The smoked turkey club sandwich is also a great option if you're in a turkey mood. I'll have to try their other menu items, they also have pasta options as well that look really good.

Yelp
This is a very cute, old school style Italian restaurant! We sat on the back patio which was cute and intimate. You can definitely feel like this is a family run business and our service was wonderful. This place is BYOB so don't forget to bring your wine! To start, we got the calamari appetizer. Our plate had a lot of calamari and a tasty marinara sauce. And for our entree we got the Rigatoni alla Casalinga. We weren't feeling super hungry so we wanted to split one portion, and they actually brought it out to us already divided on two plates! And for dessert we split a cannoli, which was the perfect sweet treat. If you're looking for a cozy and classic Italian spot - this is your place! To be honest, I don't think this is the *best* Italian food you can get in Chicago, but it is pretty good and fairly priced! And the service and hospitality is amazing.

Christina A.

Yelp
I dined at Lucia's with friends for my birthday before a show at Subterranean. It was perfect! This is a small, BYOB old school Italian restaurant. Our meal started with bread and the calamari. I've had a lot of calamari and these were really tasty!! I had the vegetarian lasagna, which had zucchini and really great cheese and sauce. Everyone loved their pastas. Our waitress was so nice and even brought out a cannoli without nuts for my birthday! I highly recommend Lucia's!

Jo D.

Yelp
I love Lucia's! Authentic Italian and a lovely relaxing environment. Try everything!!! Service is run by the family so it's very authentic and friendly.

Mario P.

Yelp
Classic Italian recipes come to life at this charming Italian restaurant located in Bucktown (Chicago). The service is personal, the warmth from the owners - who always seem to be there - is genuine, and the food (outstanding). It is a BYO experience ... bring you own alcohol. Enjoy!

Jake E.

Yelp
Best classic Italian food I've ever had. Pastas are insanely good. Also the owner's are the nicest people who really care about the quality of the service and the food. Also if you get to know them they may share some secret desserts.

Katie G.

Yelp
Lucia's is the best! I've been coming to Lucia's since I moved to Wicker Park, and its still one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago 16 years later. The food is delicious and the service is warm and friendly. AND, it's BYOB, which is always a great time (zen wines is just down the block). 10/10 whole-heartedly recommend.

Dania S.

Yelp
Great spot! Love this place for lunch or dinner! Lunch you can usually grab a wonderful sandwich or special of the day. The rib eye sandwich is a hidden gem but honestly I've had them all and can't complain. Also the restaurant in the back does a lovely Italian dinner and is byob. I've mostly had the dinner pastas and can't complain about any of them. However they do have steaks, lamb and seafood as well. The couple that owns this spot are also really friendly and sweet. This spot is part of our regular neighborhood spot rotation - really easy to pop in and grab a bite to eat, lunch or dinner!!!

Brian W.

Yelp
I've been here a bunch of times now and literally it's the best subs in Chicago. Last time I had a turkey sub it was awesome! The Italian is perfection. Tonight, I stopped in and grabbed a meatball sandwich to go. With mozzarella and sweet peppers, it's insane. The bread is so good and the meatballs are homemade so amazing. Lucia the Queen of Italy! No reason to get a sub anywhere else. Obviously, Grand and Ogden is good too but if you're in Bucktown literally no place else that compares! Lucia's is #1. Period.

Ellie B.

Yelp
I have been to Lucia's for lunch and have always enjoyed it. The tortellini soup is reviving, especially if you are not feeling well. I went to Lucia's for dinner and it blew me away! The calamari (half grilled, half fried) was cooked perfectly and tasted fresh. The beef carpaccio was also delicious as a starter. All of my friends enjoyed their pastas and we all left with empty plates. The staff there are extremely engaged and kind. They checked in on us often and were efficient in bringing out the food. The restaurant itself is quaint and quiet. It feels like you are in a small Italian town even in the middle of busy North ave. I will definitely be back!

Annie K.

Yelp
Omggg finally found my new spot for pasta all'amatriciana. Been searching high and low since moving to Chicago, for a place that does it well and eureka I have found it. Enjoyed my bucatini all'amatriciana on a Tuesday evening in the dining room. The ambience is very cozy and homey in a good way. Loved the cute Christmas decorations this time of year. Service was great. My friend ordered the linguine vongole and loved it so much she drank the leftover white wine sauce lol. Had tiramisu for dinner which also hit the spot. Planning to return this weekend with the bf!

Omar A.

Yelp
Fun lunch in the city -- Turkey sandwich, meatball sub and the most amazing potato salad Everything is cooked fresh and in their kitchen. Nothing too old school Italian cooking with Momma's secret sauce and attention to quality ingredients Come check it for dinner or lunch Come for dinning or deli Leave with a smile

Ashley B.

Yelp
A new regular spot I will be going to if I need a pasta fix. Nice Italian vibe with soft music playing in the background. Attentive and kind service. Large outdoor patio for when it is nice out. Little candles on each table. BYOB with no cork fee or questions asked. Two different types of breads are served to you right when you sit with butter, parmesan, and oil. With any entree, you get a homemade vinaigrette that is BOMB. The cook makes it fresh each morning. And even though the salad is just greens and one slice of tomato, it is very refreshing. Then the pasta, oh the pasta. Large portions. I got the Rigatoni alla Casalinga and loved it. I would have liked to add some red pepper flakes to it and totally forgot to ask. I highly recommend!

Jessica C.

Yelp
We tried the deli only, not the restaurant and the deli subs were pretty good and satisfied our craving for Italian sandwiches however they weren't the best we've had (Conte's and JP Graziano are the gold standard). I was happy to see a vegetarian sub on the menu but honestly it was only okay, a little bland but once I added hot giardineria it was good. The sandwiches look better than they taste. Sandwiches come with a bag of chips. There is some seating so they bring the sandwiches out to you if you dine in. Someone nearby ordered a hot entree of pasta and that looked really good. I would try give this place another shot and try something else next time.

Laura K.

Yelp
I ordered dessert from Lucia's when I hosted a small get together for friends for the White Lotus season 2 finale. We shared 2 tiramisu and 2 orders of cannoli (3 pieces in each order) for 4 people, delivered via DoorDash. I was pleasantly surprised to see the tiramisu arrive in glasses. The cannoli were small, but fresh and delicious. Having dessert delivered made my life a lot easier after I spent all day preparing the rest of the menu for our Italian themed feast. I would definitely order from Lucia's again and I look forward to trying the rest of the menu hopefully soon!

Leo L.

Yelp
Best deli in Chicago with a fantastic restaurant as well. Authentic Italian food. Owners are from Italy and are the nicest couple around. Great bang for your buck too.

Carlos O.

Yelp
I ordered the chicken parmigiana sandwich. It was ok. The chicken tasted like it wasn't seasoned. You could taste the bland chicken through the rest of the ingredients.

Raul G.

Yelp
First time stopping in for a sandwich. Great place with a wide selection of classic sandwiches. Friendly staff, great service and fresh ingredients in the 9" Famous Lucia sub. Can't wait to go back and try the Italian beef or any of the other deli sandwiches.

Sloan I.

Yelp
Family run business and you can feel the love in their food! Everything here is made In house even all their soups and they have a small selection of deli meats and cheeses you can purchase as well. Can't go wrong with anything here but I went with the antipasto salad which was phenomenal, huge chunks of salami, mortadella and provolone cheese. I also had a cup of their home made chicken noodle soup and I will be craving it all winter. My boyfriend got their meatball sub which never disappoints!! If you like traditional Italian subs and soups this is a must try! Thanks Lucia!

Kyle A.

Yelp
Worst service I've ever seen. Waited 10 minutes while the workers behind the counter just walked back and forth. I waited at the counter and the guy said I'll be right with you 5 minutes later.. he services a different customer. Bet the food is great but service ruined it.

Seth L.

Yelp
Hidden gem. Period. Eggplant Parm sandwich is on point (as is the fried calamari among other dishes). Excellent vibe too. Handed my 2 year old son a little treat when we were waiting for our carry out order. It's that type of vibe. Lovely. Enjoy.

Larry F.

Yelp
Excellent food. Virtually homemade quality. Nicest and most dedicated owners. It's Adele with dining in the back and outside.

Nina C.

Yelp
The owner herself is the most welcoming and pleasant person!!! She greets us with such warmth that you feel like you're in a grandmother's kitchen. The food is excellent, inexpensive and great quality!!! Delicious every time and I continue to try something different and it never disappoints!!!! So yummy and authentic!!!

Stacy C.

Yelp
Wow! Wow! Wow! Words cannot describe how amazing, flavorful, fresh and AUTHENTIC Lucias is!!! My boyfriend is from Italy's neighbor, Spain, and I haven't seen him enjoy food this much in a very long time! The owner, Domenic, is super friendly and welcoming, too! This was our first time visiting the restaurant and on the drive home we were already are planning our return! It's BYOB btw ;) So happy to have been recommended this restaurant, I plan to tell everyone about this gem! Pictured: Calamari Griglia & Linguine alle Vongole Veraci

Claudia N.

Yelp
Yooooooooooo this place is lowkey gasoline fire flame emojis! Get the minestrone it's so gas

vj c.

Yelp
Great food! Great service!! Wonderful neighborhood BYOB restaurant. Highly recommend.

Avery L.

Yelp
So cute and great service! Was speedy to get out and great prices! I got the Ham and Swiss and I was easily allowed to customize it! It was soooo delicious

Errol B.

Yelp
I ordered delivery. There is nothing bad I can say about this place. The chicken parmigiana sandwich is delightful. Cooked perfectly. Italian beef is of much better quality or at least prepared more correctly than other places. I am not sure what brand they use or if they prepare their own. The French bread they use is top notch. We have not gotten to the cannoli yet, but I will edit my review after we eat them. The prices here are reasonable unlike many places in popular areas of the city have become now. And they give you a free small bag of Lay's potato chips with every sandwich. Will be back.

Stephen S.

Yelp
The best in the area. Little mom and pop deli that makes delicious sandwiches, pasta, and everything in between. My go to for a quick lunch. Got the combo today and it made my day better instantly. I will be back

Sundy G.

Yelp
The food was great, loved the linguine and clams! They accommodated gluten-free guests and mommy with a stroller. Such a friendly staff!!

Alexander N.

Yelp
Textbook definition of a classic old-school Italian spot. From the music to the pictures of Italy and of course to the food, this is your traditional Italian restaurant. I called to make a reservation for a larger group on a Saturday night, and they were very friendly and accommodating. It's BYOB so you can bring along your favorite Red and save yourself a few bucks compared to other places. Everyone enjoyed the appetizers - Fried Calamari, Bruschetta - as well as their meals - I got the Gnocchi. I have yet to go for their subs, but I'm sure that they are excellent.

Adriana G.

Yelp
Lucia s famous sub it's right due for . Their deli sandwiches are so good I have tried their potato salad so good

Anna G.

Yelp
The yale is to die for! Order any sub or item from the bakery is well worth it. best sub in the city

Sarah B.

Yelp
A REAL taste of Italy in Chicago! My husband and I are ever in search of authentic Italian food. I spent four summers working in Italy but also have in-laws who are Italian. We know Italian food! We find, more often than not, people of different nationalities offering Italian cuisine and while we love ALL cultures, we desire authentic Italian food. Lucia and Dominic offer just such and within moments of sitting down we decided we would return as often as possible. In addition to DELICIOUS cuisine, the patio left nothing to be desired. The interior is tastefully decorated and we have already planned to have our most special celebrations there! Don't forget to BYOB!

Ashley A.

Yelp
Neighborhood Italian favorite! This is the cutest mom and pop Italian shop in wicker park. They offer a wide variety of freshly made sandwiches (cold and hot) and various daily pasta specials. I have been here several times for their sandwiches which are AMAZING. I love the Lucia sub which is a simple yet classic sandwich with various cold cuts of cured meats and ham. optional mayo and oil(which I get and it makes the sandwich so juicy and flavorful). I opt for the medium size and it comes with a bag of potato chips. If I'm VERY hungry, then I can finish the entire thing. Otherwise dudes, a medium size sandwich should fill you up. I have also tried the chicken parmigiana sandwich which was hot and filled with flavorful marinara sauce. Wait: no wait! Parking: street parking or if you're lucky, wood street has free parking.

Vita P.

Yelp
Yummy! I specifically booked a party reservation here because it's BYOB and no charge in cork fee. It's absolutely wonderful. My party was of 16 for a Friday evening. The dining room is snug; I wish there was a little more elbow room, however the food and ambiance made up for it. My party ended up all ordering separate dishes with a few appetizers. We all brought cash to pay (only 2 CCs maximum at table so encourage your party to bring cash). All dishes were reasonably priced and our bill was about $450 for 16 people which I thought wasn't bad at all. Food was great-- I ordered the Linguine alla Pescatora. I would recommend coming here, snug for a big party, but overall had a great time.

Andrea R.

Yelp
The reason this place is still standing strong after 20 years is that they are simply the best in town. A mom-and-pop Italian deli that uses only the finest olive oil, the freshest ingredients, and remarkable flavorings to everything they serve. It's also BYOB with no cork fee. And the owners are the friendliest people. The Ortolano & Lucia's famous sub are my personal favorites--although every other sandwich is just as good if not better. We also always get the giardiniera, pasta salad, olives, and potato salad. Try everything as long as your stomach allows. You won't be disappointed!
