The Best Irish Pubs in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Pasadena (and Sierra Madre’s) longtime Lucky Baldwin’s is run by the same company that operates Trappiste Pub and Delirium Cafe. The menu is full of savory options with bangers and mash, British curry, Scotch egg, and cottage pie. The fish and chips with a pint are always a solid go-to option. Brunch is especially hearty with waffles or the full English breakfast with Irish bacon, eggs, banger, grilled tomato, mushrooms, potatoes, and baked beans." - Mona Holmes

The LA Sports Bar Directory

"Named after the businessman, investor, and tycoon Elias Jackson “Lucky” Baldwin, this very British pub in Pasadena serves very British fare like beans on toast and crumpets, and they’ve got over 60 beers on tap. It was also once referenced on The Big Bang Theory, if you care more about that than their FIFA World Cup events." - kat hong, james montgomery

Google
The service was fair. The food was decent. Better than I expected. The bathrooms were not great, heavy graffiti. Could have been cleaner. TV that was mounted upward had ketchup or something on it. Pricing was reasonable.

I have been here half a dozen times or so over the years and always enjoy it. Came here recently on a Thursday for breakfast shortly after 9 am. I was told to come back at 9:30 as they were doing some cleaning. I did and also learned that only the breakfast menu is available in the morning. Not an issue as the English Breakfast was fantastic. The server was helpful and friendly. The Guinness was perfect. I even tried their other location the next day and it was equally as good. Looking forward to coming back.

Google
Wanted a good Sunday roast but it was the day before St Patrick's day so the menu was limited. The cider was great and and bangers and mash reminded me of my old school dinners. They were limited on desserts too. What English eatery doesn't have apple pie and custard!!

Google
Andres (sp?) is the best bartender, hands down. He's sharper than your average bar patron by a mile, remembers stuff, and is hilarious. I love this place. Tons of good beer. The vibe is lively but chill. They have a staple of high quality Belgian beers on tap, in addition to good interesting local stuff. Overall it's a great mix of European and local beers. Definitely keep track of their monthly specials. They had about 10 Russian River beers on draught, which i would've went heavy on had I not had a few dranks before. Definitely take an Uber, you'll find multiple things you'll probably want to drink.

The calamari was to die for. Our waitress was slammed with customers, but handled herself with pride and dignity. We love this little pub.

Google
Great selection of beers. Fun atmosphere. Laid back yet attentive service. Food was fantastic! Will definitely come again. There is parking in the back and they prefer cash.

Google
Great pub with good service. They have a nice and long list of beer on tap. We liked our porters and the very UK pub vibe. We'll have to try the food one day, it smelled great.

Great place for Egllish Food! Tons of drafts. Tvs everywhere for sports.

Yelp
This has been one of my favorite pubs for a long time. I've long thought there was a battle between a few of the different pubs around Los Angeles for their fish and chips. Last week I happened to eat back to back on Wednesday at Fox & Hound and studio City and Friday lunch at the Sierra Madre Lucky Baldwin it had been about six months since I had Lucky Baldwin, fish and chips at the flagship location on Raymond Avenue. The batter is perfection. The cod is always plump and well cooked - this meal literally melts in your mouth.

Yelp
We came 30 minutes early to wait in line behind about 50-60 people for euro 2024 England quarter final game. Inside and outside seating. Good atmosphere. We got the Full English breakfast. Pros - very good breakfast (better than the Olde Ships in Fullerton). We finished everything. Idk if they import the sausage and bacon but the sausage is different than American sausage. Gave me nostalgic memories back to infants school in Ilford, Essex. - good size. - good atmosphere. Cons - none Overall 8/10

Yelp
It's Pasadena Cheeseburger Week so I picked Lucky Baldwin's when I was in Pasadena. Had the English burger - blue cheese and bacon - medium rare. It came with homemade fries. They asked if I wanted extra sauce so I chose blue cheese sauce. Everything was superb but most importantly, the burger was really medium rare. Service was above excellent - thanks to David, the bartender. He worked at top speed to please everybody and it sure seemed like he did. Kudos to that guy. Sent a picture of the burger to a friend and he was jealous, so I'll be back with him and his wife.

Yelp
That Fish and chips hit the spot. I was not disappointed at all! I loved it. I ordered it for delivery and the fish showed up hot and crispy. Loved the coleslaw too. I got the large portion. And the tartar sauce was cool and creamy. I would recommend this to all my friends. Absolutely delicious. Lucky Baldwin's Pub is now my new favorite and their fish and chips is an exceptional departure from the usual chicken pizza burgers and burritos. Special thanks to the chef's on duty Sunday afternoon July 7th. When I ordered my 3 large fish and chips for delivery. Again it was extremely tasty and very filling great generous portions too. Sorry no photos I ate it too quickly Here I enclosed a picture of me being happy after eating your Fish & Chips

Yelp
Don't even waste your time ! We came in no greeting,so I walked around looking for someone , ended up in the kitchen and they brought us the only server who was clearly overwhelmed and stated "sit wherever you want, I'm the only one here" so we did and then waited, seen a couple people stand around waiting to be sat, but then left . Saw this other gentleman walk in and the server was like sit where ever I don't care. After about 15 minutes I left but before I did I told the gentleman that came after me, good luck getting serviced. He was sat at . I really wanted to try this place but I will not be back.

Yelp
I've been here a few times and do enjoy their English Breakfast in the morning. Having said that, I've noticed more and more just how disorganized their staff are and how terrible their customer service can be. My last time here was on a Sunday for lunch. We were seated inside and were not attended to for more than 30 minutes until I got out of my seat to find a server and then waited another 10 minutes for her to come back. The food took a long time to come and was just ok. I think besides the English breakfast there's not much good options to eat there. Overall maybe sit outside for better service? But even when I've been the first group here seated I just notice a lack of urgency from the staff and just super slow times for everything.

Yelp
Great sports bar/pub that focuses heavily on more European/British sports. I say that to mean it does a lot with EPL, Rugby World Cup, F1 even when stuff like the NFL is on (although they have a ton of TVs and do a great job changing them to accommodate anyone). They have a great beer selection and the patio opens up into a nice alley. Good sports bar that does what it's trying to do well.

A. J. R.

Yelp
The service last night was completely pathetic. My family has been in the restaurant business for over 60 years, and I have never been more disappointed in my life. The man bun server was disorganized and utterly oblivious to his job responsibilities. Lucky Baldwins will continue to decline due to the lack of concern for their patrons.

Yelp
A staple of old town Pasadena and famous for their beer selection. I hadn't been since pre Covid (and then only for the Belgian beer festival) so let's see how she weathered the storm 1- atmosphere It's an old school English pub vibe. If that's your thing, you'll be super comfortable here. Personally, I love these sort of places. Even down to the sticky floors and tables. It's just a style you either move or loathe 2- service I came in for a quick lunch. Quick isn't apparently part of the vernacular. I asked for a beer and a water. Well, at least the beer arrived. The food order was slow in coming. Barely got in and out in an hour. 3- food and drink How can you screw up pub food ? I mean bangers and mash are as basic as it gets. The bangers (sausages) are on the smallish side. The peas are fine but the mashed potatoes were lumpy. Not in a "this is our style , we intended this" way but rather an inconsistent texture sort of way. The gravy was great , though, not too salty The beer. Chimay on tap. Happy days! I have chimay glasses at home and the ones they use here seem like a mini me version. 70% of the size of a real Belgian chimay glass. 4- the final analysis This is a drinking pub. Come for the beer. Relax in the vibe and realize the service is island style. The food is mediocre and expensive for what you get. I guess they usually just serve folks who, after a few pints, get peckish. Tip: Eat before you come.

Yelp
Surprisingly we were seated fast on this St Patrick's day and we got our Beers and fish n chips just as fast. Fish and chips were delicious as was the Black n Tans we ordered. Waitress was cool as hell. Good customer service.

Yelp
This English pub is an Old Town Pasadena classic. Huge selection of beer, great food, and all the English touches -- like football (aka soccer) -- on the television. Decades ago when I turned 21, I used to get pints of Guinness or a Black N Tan with a group of older guys. I was a skinny, high school-looking Korean guy hanging here with non-Asians in their mid to upper 20s, who were in the film and music businesses. I kept returning to Lucky Baldwin's because they were personable in serving me. Maybe I'm oversensitive/self-conscious, but I felt like other bars at the time were condescending when serving me. I don't recall Lucky Baldwin's having food way back then. Didn't matter as I had no money, and would've only spent it on Guinness anyway. Way back then, did you know that Lucky Baldwin's was originally located on Arroyo Parkway? If my memory's right, it's where King Taco is now. Well, Lucky Baldwin's is now in its rightful place on South Raymond Ave, in the more central area of Old Town, complete with an outdoor patio in a very convenient alley. Through the decades, including the pandemic, day in/day out Lucky Baldwin's has been open and serving Guinness and the best fish and chips anywhere. I know, because I've been stopping in, all this time. I've tried other beer, especially the tasty Belgians with higher alcohol percentages. Aside from the fish and chips, I've had meat pie, curry and even a burger.... But I'm a creature of habit: Overwhelmingly I get a pint (or two) of Guinness, and a full order of fish and chips. It's just too good. Food pricing has definitely gone higher. But I'm not complaining -- And you shouldn't either. Prices for everything have gone up, labor, food, and supplies. If you're complaining, good luck and try making their food at home (you won't and can't!). Thanks Lucky Baldwin's for being open and consistent throughout the years! I haven't been to your other locations. I'm sure they're just as good, maybe even better. But I've been happy at your original pub right here in Old Town Pasadena. I've travelled and been to some famous British pubs in many major U.S. cities. As far as I'm concerned, Lucky Baldwin's is the best out of them all.

Yelp
The service is good, super friendly staff and a good Selection of beer and food. Gave a four out of five stars only because we found a hair inside of our food. However, the server quickly fixed our order after we waved at ber but at the end of the day it was pretty gross.

Yelp
Great spot. A genuine British pub in the heart of Pasadena with wonderful staff and a great selection of Belgian beers. Fish n chips are fantastic, as well as most everything on the menu. Long live Lucky Baldwins!

Yelp
I was happy to see that this pub was still here and survived the pandemic. We had been before a few times years ago. Son's dad wanted to go again for Father's Day. It still looked the same, like a cool British pub. Considering there was only one waiter, service was fine, our waiter was great and apologetic. We arrived early, it was still breakfast time. We waited 15 minutes for lunch, which was fine, as I'm sure there was probably only one cook. I was considering full English breakfast, but saw they didn't include black pudding, so I tried their chicken curry pastie. It was so good! They also have steak fries, which was great for a change, cooked and salted perfectly. Also ordered were the American burger and fish and chips. Everyone liked their food. I look forward to going again.

Yelp
Lucky Baldwin's British Pub is a classic and charming establishment located in Pasadena, California. With an extensive variety of bottled and tap beers, it is the ideal spot for beer enthusiasts to enjoy their favorite drinks. Lucky Baldwin's also celebrates various European drinking festivals, making it a dynamic spot for people to enjoy unique flavors of beer. The traditional décor of Lucky Baldwin's exudes British vibes, as wooden fittings and the British flag adorn the ceiling, creating a cozy and warm atmosphere. Moreover, the service at Lucky Baldwin's is exceptional, with friendly and knowledgeable staff ready to help customers select the perfect beer and dish. Though the fish and chips dish was average, it needed a bit more salt to enhance the flavors. On the bright side, the meat pie had a delicious crust, however, the filling lacked seasoning, which left it a bit bland. Nevertheless, there are other dishes on the menu that you can try! In summary, Lucky Baldwin's is a delightful hangout spot for beer lovers that want to soak up British culture. It has an impressive selection of bottled and tap beers, making it a go-to destination for those looking for a diverse range of beers to savor. While the fish and chips could use more seasoning, the meat pie crust is definitely worth trying. If you are looking for an authentic British pub experience in the states, Lucky Baldwin's is the perfect spot! Happy drinking Yelpers!

Yelp
Lucky Baldwins Pub is modeled after a UK or Irish pub (elements of both in there) and has SO much personality. The bar owner was exceptionally accommodating and even gave us that fun blueberry KitKat. The decorations on the walls, large lager glasses and unique selection of alcohol made this place a must. We stumbled into here by accident and to get out of the cold, and left after eating some very delicious chicken tenders. I will be back to explore the upstairs Ambiance: 10/10 Ease of seating/ speed of service: 10/10 Vegan options: 5/10 Gluten free options: 6/10 Low carb options: 6/10 Overall deliciousness: 10/10 Pricing: $ Parking: yes, street or garage Liquor License: yea

A proper pub. Great beer list. It's the right way to catch a Prem match in the morning. COYS

Yelp
Always home away from home . Been coming for 20 years with the Pasadena Reds But damn almost $20 for just 2 eggs and a side of bacon ?? Wow

Yelp
This place is nasty. I'll never go back. That was definitely not an English breakfast. Nasty. Nothing available. Expensive. Poor quality. And do use the bathroom ‍ I'll will never return. EVER. Waitress was nice guy behind the bar was nice.

Yelp
I went to Lucky Baldwin's for the third time. I don't go there regularly as I'm kind of a homebody. However, this place is pretty chill. I don't know if it gets busy, but it wasn't busy last time. We got a beer of course. We also got a couple pasties. The beef and the curry pasties. They were delicious. The pastry dough was soft and tasted homemade. Then we had the fish and chips. They were good, but the fish was a bit over cooked and dry. I would give that another chance. Of course they have a great beer selection. The customer service is also great. I recommend this place if you're in the area looking for some good brewskies.

Katherine W.

Yelp
Terrible. Went there for St. Pat's. They served Guiness out of plastic cups. Not even a full pint. The fish & chips were half of their normal portions, but the price was higher. The chips and peas were cold. When we raised these issues, the server was unhelpful and rude. She told us this was normal for St. Patrick's Day. What an insult to the Irish.

Robert L.

Yelp
We love fish n chips and after moving from Venice to Whittier kings head pub is way to far so we ventured to the land of plenty old town Pasadena and had a pint of beer and a plate of surprisingly delicious fish n chips in a very friendly and inviting English style pub we should be back regularly so the 4 stars might be going to 5 . Keep it we loved it .
google avatar

Shelly M.

Yelp
I love this place! Perfect place to have an ice cold brew in summer, and very cool, low key atmosphere. (Love it). The juke box is fun...and the food is really good, English pub food. They also have a killer breakfast.

Sonia T.

Yelp
I was quite disappointed with the food. The Yorkshire pudding (biscuit ) was tiny and very soggy inside. The cottage pie also was small and the mash potatoes on top were very watery like they were instant mash and not fresh. Really wanted to like it but was definitely not English food .

mike c.

Yelp
Very underwhelming experience. Maybe because I didn't have a beer. Fries were piping hot a good sign. Sadly once they cooled they were a bit under done. As far as the fish? Basically tasteless.

Harry B.

Yelp
Ordered the fish and chips for delivery and was unpleasantly surprised by burnt and mushy fish. Why would any cook allow this to be served?
google avatar

A S.

Yelp
Never disappoints. Haven't been here for a while, but always have a great time. Sincere and helpful staff make sure you have an amazing experience. Awesome beer on tap, delicious fish and chips. Still our favorite pub in LA. Thanks again Lucky Baldwin's! We will be back :)

Yelp
Came here with some friends to watch game 6 of the NBA finals. The outdoor patio vibe is cool - it's enclosed from the sidewalk (which is really nice) and there are string lights and TVs outside. Drinks and food were pretty good but it took forever for one person at our table to get a small plate (fish bites). Staff was friendly about it (and really friendly overall) but we had all finished our food way before he got his fish bites. We had asked for other things (like a glass of water with lemon, side of tartar sauce, etc.) and had never gotten them. I did enjoy the chicken chipotle sandwich and my boyfriend liked his fish n chips. They didn't seem particularly busy so maybe they were understaffed but either way it took away from our experience a bit. Side note: there were no captions on the outdoor TVs and the sound was super low so it may not be the best place to watch sports.
google avatar

Scott A.

Yelp
Lucky Baldwin's is a Pasadena treasure. If you haven't been there you are missing out. They have a great British Pub vibe and you can even buy some legit English treats. If you're a soccer fan make sure to come early for any big match as it will get packed. The crowd is always friendly and the staff is always helpful. You should give them a try when there isn't a big match on the TV so you don't have to battle the crowd but whether you go in or off peak it is a special place to visit. The food is good and there are many traditional pub favorites worth trying but for me the beer selection and the vibe are what makes the place special.
google avatar

Benson K.

Yelp
I had been craving British food for quite a long time, and I decided to take my wife here for brunch on Valentine's Day weekend. I've been to a few other restaurants that serve British food before, so I was looking forward to what Lucky Baldwin's had to offer. I discussed the options with my wife for a while, before settling on the curry chicken pastie and the cottage pie. My wife chose the cottage pie. I decided on the chicken curry pastie as I saw pasties on YouTube and I wanted to give it a try. The chicken curry pastie was amazing. The pastry was super flaky and crispy, and I loved the chicken curry. The chicken was slightly on the dry side. The cottage pie was not bad, but my wife and I both felt it was slightly bland. The beef and potatoes could have used more seasoning. Overall, solid restaurant, next time we want to come back and try the full English breakfast.

Michael D.

Yelp
Everything is fried! Horrible and way overpriced! Tried to like this place for a while, but they just do not care
google avatar

Yelp
Princeton, understand your customer base! I am a loyal customer. Been going here for years and started while working at university there. The place has fond memories. Although I don't live in Pasadena, when I'm around, I go there and take all of my friends. My last visit was not a pleasant one solely due to the prices of the food. I understand that in these times, inflation causes businesses to increase prices. These prices I witnessed were unreasonable. (My opinion) Example: pasty = $12. One. There was no Boddington on tap either. This is a British pub. Sad. The good: The service was awesome. They were great. Sympathetic as well as attentive; funny and understanding.

Yelp
Very disappointing experience. This place does not recognize the principle of First in Time, First in Right.
google avatar

Angela J.

Yelp
Service was slow. Waitress had an attitude. Questioned why we wanted more napkins......that was a first!

Andrea C.

Yelp
We had a fun first experience here! Bartenders very helpful in giving advise about drink selections! We went with a cider-stem ciders -lightly sweet and a hard to find beer Plyney the Elder...(hard to find apparently.. so high scores for that) Glad that they are open late!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Well lucky I'm not. Ordered Grubhub. 7:15. Said would arrive by 7:42. It's 8:22 and my food is still not ready. I don't know if it's good. Won't have a chance to decide based on the tardiness of there delivery. Isn't Grubhub error. This is all the restaurant. Just thought I would share. Overpromise and underdeliver. That's lucky's.
google avatar

LALA D.

Yelp
Me and my BFF just finished the Beckham documentary and decided we needed to go to an authentic English pub. I was happy to see that they have a dog friendly patio WITH A DOGGY MENU!! She had fish and chips and I had the chicken sandwich. The food was so yummy. Phoebe was super attentive and brought some water for my pup! She kept checking on us and refilled our waters. The ambiance was nice but seriously the service on the patio makes such a difference. I didn't have any cocktails but I noticed most patrons had beers. This was a nice ending to a long week.
google avatar

Todd B.

Yelp
Great variety of beers, lots of Belgian beers, good atmosphere, brought mg dogs here a few times. Good breakfast on the patio with your canine pals.
google avatar

Diana B.

Yelp
I used to hang out here when I was young. I guess because I was always drinking I never realized how terrible the food is. We just visited to have lunch and the service was terrible. The fish was a soggy wet mess. We were not asked how we wanted the burgers cooked and they were raw inside and I don't enjoy seeing bloody red meat in my burger. Trying to walk through the crowd to get to the bathroom is just a hassle. If you just want to drink then this is a good place but if want a good meal with your beer it's a hard NO.
google avatar

Debi B.

Yelp
We had a mix up with a delivery order. Tatiana went way above and beyond to help us. Wonderful customer service. The fish and chips were great as usual. Thanks so much.
google avatar

Farah J.

Yelp
This review truly is just for the fact that when it was 1 AM as I was so late for my date that serving hours was cut off lol the gentleman was sweet enough to give me a flake and being a brat, we love our flake candy bars. I love the fact that they were able to bring that to me regardless of if it's something they do on the regular or not it's just a really nice touch.
google avatar

Bob T.

Yelp
We were wandering around looking for breakfast; several places were very crowded and this place wasn't. That made us a bit hesitant, but we were pleasantly surprised that breakfast was great and reasonably priced. There seemed to only be one server on duty but he was very friendly and did a good job.
google avatar

Yelp
Tonight we had the worst dining experience in years at this Lucky Baldwins! Extremely slow service, dirty/lack of bussing, mushy fish, maybe raw, grease saturated fries, and best of all an extremely rude waitress. Never coming back to Lucky Baldwins.
google avatar

Behr B.

Yelp
8 of us really enjoyed our 2 hours in the patio. The food and beer were very good. Our server Staci was great.

Yelp
Visited both locations in Pasadena and never been disappointed. Great pub food and drink selection and ambience.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of sitting in Maureen's section and had a blast. I asked if sour beers were available and she mentioned that they had a few and recommended one with passion fruit and it was great. I got another order. We had a burger and fries and they paired well. Thanks for everything Luckys and Maureen.

Yelp
I had the most bizarre experience at Lucky Baldwin's today. I stopped by today to get a pour of the much-sought after Pliny the Younger. In order to get a pour, they sold blue raffle tickets, which allowed you to get a pour of a Russian River beer, a pour of Pliny the Younger, and a entry into a merchandise raffle. The Pliny keg must have been almost tapped because as I was waiting in line, the bartender came out and asked if anyone had a blue ticket. I responded I did, and he said that I could step out-of-line and he would get me a pour. I was grateful and appreciative that he offered this. He directed me to the side bar where he told me to wait and asked me to write my name on the raffle ticket. As I was writing my name on the raffle ticket, I had a different server come to up to me and started berating me for standing there. When I tried to explain that I was directed to stand there and write my name on the ticket, she essentially started accusing me of giving her an attitude. Confused as to what to do as I couldn't find the bartender who had originally directed me there, I again saw the server and when I again tried to explain what had happened she began yelling at me, loudly staying that I "could get the f*** out of [there)!" I have been to Lucky Baldwin's numerous times for pre-game or post-game beers with my softball team or for some fish and chips on a Friday night with my wife, and I have never had anything but a pleasant experience. Today, however, was one of the most embarrassing and truly bizarre experiences I have ever had at a bar or restaurant. I totally understand how hectic, stressful, and challenging today must have been for the staff at Lucky Baldwin's, but that server should understand that basic manners like "excuse me" go a long way. Anyways, cheers to Pliny the Younger.

Yelp
Went here with a friend during happy hour and was pleased by this impromptu visit. It's a nice, tucked away German brewery serving a variety of beer and snacks. Service was super friendly and the vibe was chill. Will come again when I feel being more adventurous with my drinks but I had Guinness and the black rabbit. :)

Yelp
Came in on a Monday night, wasn't busy at all so that was nice. Was serviced quickly, drinks were good, staff was cool. Good vibes over all. I tried their spicy wings, love them, they were perfect. Too many bars make wings that are so fatty but these had a lot of meat and the amount of spice, flavor, dressing, was perfect. I didn't get to try anything else on the menu but I wouldn't mind coming back on a Tuesday to do so. Tuesday because that's when they have their trivia nights. Parking is located beyond the pub. Bathrooms are clean and there's more than one. Over all, cool spot.

Just a heads up! Absolutely no vegetarian or plant-based options on St. Patrick's Day Disappointing, but not surprising. Hopefully enlightenment will ensue someday. Friendly service and plenty of booze.
