This English pub is an Old Town Pasadena classic. Huge selection of beer, great food, and all the English touches -- like football (aka soccer) -- on the television.
Decades ago when I turned 21, I used to get pints of Guinness or a Black N Tan with a group of older guys. I was a skinny, high school-looking Korean guy hanging here with non-Asians in their mid to upper 20s, who were in the film and music businesses.
I kept returning to Lucky Baldwin's because they were personable in serving me. Maybe I'm oversensitive/self-conscious, but I felt like other bars at the time were condescending when serving me. I don't recall Lucky Baldwin's having food way back then. Didn't matter as I had no money, and would've only spent it on Guinness anyway.
Way back then, did you know that Lucky Baldwin's was originally located on Arroyo Parkway? If my memory's right, it's where King Taco is now. Well, Lucky Baldwin's is now in its rightful place on South Raymond Ave, in the more central area of Old Town, complete with an outdoor patio in a very convenient alley.
Through the decades, including the pandemic, day in/day out Lucky Baldwin's has been open and serving Guinness and the best fish and chips anywhere. I know, because I've been stopping in, all this time.
I've tried other beer, especially the tasty Belgians with higher alcohol percentages. Aside from the fish and chips, I've had meat pie, curry and even a burger.... But I'm a creature of habit: Overwhelmingly I get a pint (or two) of Guinness, and a full order of fish and chips. It's just too good.
Food pricing has definitely gone higher. But I'm not complaining -- And you shouldn't either. Prices for everything have gone up, labor, food, and supplies. If you're complaining, good luck and try making their food at home (you won't and can't!).
Thanks Lucky Baldwin's for being open and consistent throughout the years! I haven't been to your other locations. I'm sure they're just as good, maybe even better. But I've been happy at your original pub right here in Old Town Pasadena.
I've travelled and been to some famous British pubs in many major U.S. cities. As far as I'm concerned, Lucky Baldwin's is the best out of them all.
