Where to Catch the Best Fish and Chips in Los Angeles, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Lucky Baldwin’s has perfected its fish and chips recipe, dropping Pacific cod and in an ale batter before adding the fish to a deep fryer. It took nearly four decades of consistent practice to perfect the crisp outer layer of the fish, which is served with wide, thick fries, and a side of tartar sauce made in-house. This Old Pasadena pub also serves a tasty and wonderful British accompaniment, peas." - Mona Holmes

13 Stellar Irish Pubs in Los Angeles

"Pasadena’s longtime Lucky Baldwin’s is run by the same company that operates Trappiste Pub and Delirium Cafe. The menu is full of savory options with bangers and mash, British curry, and cottage pie. But the fish and chips are always the go-to option with a pint." - Mona Holmes, Eater Staff

12 Places to Find a Traditional English Breakfast in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Pasadena staple Lucky Baldwin’s has been playing to the Brit-loving masses for more than two decades. And while the focus has traditionally been on the company’s expansive beer collection, don’t forget the extended menu of classic meals as well." - Farley Elliott

I’ve been coming to this place for years—it’s always a great spot to catch up with friends and share good moments. I used to frequent their other location several nights a week... those were truly unforgettable times.

Google
I’ve never been to England before, but I can imagine this is what a pub there would feel like. There is a great vibe and atmosphere with lots of drink and food options. While the fish and chips were the biggest I have ever had, I cannot say they were the best. The fries and coleslaw were decent, but the fish was very unappetizing and I could not finish.

Google
The Raymond / Old Town pub is Great if you’re an Arsenal fan / supporter. A group meets there on most match days. Atmosphere is fun and welcoming. Don’t recommend it for Spurs / Tottenham fans however. Also meet with Liverpool, Man U fans in their respective fixtures. These are early morning events mind you. This one I’m writing a review on is better for midday NFL or just to hang in a low key atmosphere with good beers and pub grub.

Google
Beer selection over all ok, they take a lot of time to take your order. Only two guys running the whole place. Food okay, 20 average. Good beer around 10 a pint.

Google
Swung in here for the first time and it was great. Went with the bangers and mash with a Guinness. Enjoyed the food, drink and service. If you’re in the mood for a British Pub, defiantly give them try.

Google
Excellent beer selection and delicious British pub food. The fish and chips are some of the best I've had. The fish is perfectly cooked and not dried out like many places, and the breading isn't too heavy or oily. The steak and Guinness meat pie is also worth a try. Occasionally they run out of some beer offerings but there are so many choices that shouldn't bother anyone. I've never had anything less than great service, even during busy evenings.

Evan Dorn

Google
Food was very tasty - the fries were some of the best I've had. The only thing I'd ask is for another one or two vegetarian options on the menu. Pub trivia was tons of fun! but it is a little hard to hear in there.

Place is great! Always love coming here. Staff is very knowledgeable with their alcohol. Food is always on par. Not much to say!

Yelp
Lucky Baldwins Pub - Trappiste Ale House is a great place to Drink, and to Eat - but it's also a great place to bring a date: because... 1). Lucky Baldwins feels more European than most other local Restaurant-Bars in Pasadena, or in any other part of LA. 2). Lucky Baldwins offers around 200 imported beers, and over 50 types of Scotch. 3). Lucky Baldwins has a pretty good Pub-Food menu, offering Fish & Chips, Meat Pies, English Curry, Bangers & Mash, Burgers, Calamari, Scotch Eggs, etc. 4). Lucky Baldwins doesn't blare TV shows like other bars. 5). Lucky Baldwins has a front patio, just like in Belgium. I have been to Lucky Baldwins Pub - Trappiste Ale House many times, mostly to the branch in Sierra Madre, but also a few times in Pasadena. It has a good discount "Happy Hour" menu (Monday - Thursday from 2pm-6pm & again from 10pm-11pm), which makes it a great place to go Before seeing a movie with dinner planned for afterwards, OR a great place to go After seeing a movie if you already had a lite dinner before it and were craving a late night Ale & a good half-priced Pub Snack afterwards. And unlike most pubs, Lucky Baldwins also offers a hearty English Breakfast (served on the weekends, Sat & Sun, 9am-12pm) offering eggs, beans, bangers, English Crumpets, & a rasher of bacon, plus more yummy stuff. In fact, most of the food here is British Pub-Grub, and not Belgian at all (Except for their strawberry & whipped cream covered Belgian Waffles). Lucky Baldwins even offers a Sunday Roast Beef feast British style (Beef Au Jus, Honey Glazed Carrots & Parsnips, Roasted Potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding. - Sundays Only, From noon on). But the Most unique menu offerings here are from the "Fido Menu", which lists two choices, both designed for Dogs, and both served in steel bowls to be placed on the ground next to your table. So if you don't come here with a human date, you can certainly come here with a Dog-Date. And I assure you - That date will end up going home with you.

Yelp
Came here with my brother, before he went to work. Perfect timing as it was mid afternoon 3 pm. Looks like the place is great for a beer and watching games. Good selection of beers, and typical bar food. Food was ok. Originally ordered calamari and after 10 minutes was told there was none. Ok , Ordered 10 piece wings and chicken tenders. Drinks , one ale and an Arnold Palmer . Tab $68 Overpriced bar food. Beers was great. Service unfortunately like the other reviews , seemed as if we were a bother. If one doesn't like dealing with the public please find an online job. My recommendation sit at the bar , enjoy the beer , a game and eat next door at the pizza parlor

Yelp
This establishment charged my card more than what I put down. I accidentally left the receipt with them so I can't have the charge rolled back now, but there's no way I offered up a $10 tip for a $20 meal-- especially after having to track down the server to even place the order in the first place. This is my first one star review I've ever taken the time to write. I've only ever felt the need to write reviews for exceptional service as I understand most businesses, especially restaurants might have off days, but this was an intentional low-integrity move that deserves some type of accountability. Writing this on principle.

Yelp
Good fun, great beer and a very nice place to relax with friends. I can't believe I've never been here. It's kind of sad since it has German food and beer in October and who doesn't want to celebrate Octoberfest?

Bea G.

Yelp
An update from my last Yelp review on Lucky Baldwin Trappiste quality of service: Got a response from their PR or damage prevention dept regarding my review and they offered a "complimentary meal" for the disservice we experienced earlier this month. I did reply to them but have not heard back or gotten a response on how this "complimentary meal" coupon can be redeemed. SMH

Yelp
Great pub for getting a drink and dinner! The service is very friendly and fast. The portion sizes are generous. They have a great selection of beer but unfortunately to a pretty elevated price.
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent fish and chips. Good beer selection and a cozy atmosphere. Friendly service. They have a large parking lot in the back as well as ample street parking. Best place to grab a bite and watch a game.

Yelp
What can I say apart from I had a blast here with my friends we were a party of 10 and they were constantly helpful. The cauliflowers were extremely good they were crispy not soggy or anything and the sauce was slightly spicy, delicious with the ranch. This place actually serves their whiskey sours with EGG WHITE. FINALLY ! I would come for those two things again.

Yelp
Great spot, delicious food, and good beer. They kindly put the game we wanted to watch on TV quickly and helped us pick out some great Belgian beer

Yelp
How have I not ever reviewed our favorite pub to frequent!? Basically this is one of our favorite restaurants. We drive from a nearby town pretty often for a burger and a pint (their English Burger is perfection, their fries are my favorite...and I'm fry picky...and if you've never tried Craftsman 1903 Lager, do yourself a favor and order a glass). We've tried most of their menu items and have yet to be disappointed! The bar itself is comfortable with great indoor/outdoor seating options. Pups are welcome outside, so bring your furry friends! The beer selection is extensive! If you don't know what you want, the amazing staff is happy to offer suggestions. And they're usually spot on! They pay a lot of attention, you'll never feel ignored, never feel like the food or service is taking too long. And definitely head here Tuesday nights for trivia! It's packed, fun, free if you spend $15 and Austin always makes the trivia challenging, fun and interactive. Basically...go here. And as the Irish say: "Here's to a long life and a merry one. A quick death and an easy one. A pretty girl and an honest one. A cold pint and another one!"

Yelp
My local pub, and one of my favorite spots to be, period. Everything I've eaten has been phenomenal, from the pasties to the fish and chips to maybe the best Reuben I've ever had (but barring the loaded crisps which are just alright), and their tap list is extensive and full of great stuff, including the Lucky Baldwins red ale, which is amazing. And they have cocktails! Plus, the vibe is chill and they have great trivia and play good music--hoping they bring the live music back!! Somewhat pricey to come here on the regular, but I love this spot and am happy to give them my money.

Yelp
Fabulous service and the best burger (The English) around. Our server was very professional. Nice seating outside.
google avatar

Jess J.

Yelp
This is our favorite local bar in Pasadena. They have the best burger in Pasadena. You can't go wrong with, the English burger. It's made with so much love and done perfect every time. Eduardo is the best bartender and always has a smile on his face! Seeing this is a British pub we were hoping they could serve sticky toffee pudding too. That would be the only thing that would make it even better.

Yelp
This place was absolutely disgusting. There was a nail in my plate of food. I'm appalled by this. How unsanitary and oblivious does a restaurant have to be, to miss a nail in a customer's food? Not only, was I eating the food. My 1 year old child who could have choked was also eating. My experience was down right deadly. DO NOT EAT HERE.

Yelp
If you grow up in the area, this had to be one of your favorite hang outs with buddies or a date. I can or cannot remember bits and pieces of various evenings here depending on how much I drank that evening. And yes they were all memorable- including the Dodgers losing to the Cubs in the playoffs with my wife on a date night long long ago. So my wife and I were lucky enough to be back here in the middle of the day because one of my tires caught a screw and I had to get my tires replaced at the nearby America's Tires. So happy this place is opened for lunch!! It was a bit early in the day so a black cherry Kombucha was the way to go for me along with their famous fish and chips. As always the foods didn't disappoint. Forgot to get the bread pudding that friends rave about. Will have to return soon to squash that craving. Okay aside from the nostalgia, the yummy foods and great selection of drinks, the service is what puts this place over the top. Our server/bartender was the do-it-all person. She was very cordial and efficient. So impressed!! Can't wait to be back!! On Lucky Baldwin, this place and two sister pubs are named after this colorful historical figure. Did you know Lucky Baldwin founded the Santa Anita Race Track? Also he was almost assassinated couple times because he didn't marry the ladies he promised to. Yaks!! Lol

Yelp
Dropped in to this place I haven't been to since college and this guy Eduardo was the most attentive bartender/server/busboy he was doing it all in an understaffed restaurant. If I had a restaurant he would be running the whole show. He's the best employee I've ever seen. Ownership should be thankful he's working here cause this would fall apart without him. 5 stars. I'll be back for him!

Yelp
I don't care what your happy hour hours are don't make me feel cheap because I asked for happy hour she actually asked me to leave because I told her I didn't appreciate her snarky remarks and she said you can leave now and I told her that I had peggy's phone number and she said I don't give a f**k who's number I have all over asking for a happy hour menu?????

Yelp
Fish & Chips excellent. Very few restaurants have steak fry's now. My fav. Next I'd like to try the Irish Mushroom Guinness burger. The cole slaw is rough cut an unadulteratedly delish.

Rich B.

Yelp
Abusive! I ordered a beer and a side dish. All was fine. After 30 min of the waitress ignoring me and my empty glass (and they're extremely slow mind you),, I walk to the bar with my empty glass to ask for another if "she has time." The same waitress says to someone that I have an attitude and she closes me out.! WOW! Zero service and it's blamed on me. Classy This place used to be decent. Never had any issues with the people here. Weak. #hirebetterpeple

Yelp
I mostly enjoy this place. The food is fantastic and as close to actual British fare as I've tasted in Britain itself. My partner and I tend to come through a lot. I have enjoyed the rebranding they did recently. I do have some thoughts, however. 1) We have come through several times in the last few months and found the kitchen isn't open for some reason or other. A couple of those times, it's been because of staffing issues. I understand that stuff happens. At the same time, I walked in after a funeral today all set for a good Full English breakfast. Nope. Kitchen closed because someone called out. And y'all were going to stick to the 12 pm cut off time for breakfast regardless of relief staff opening back up at that time. I would think a half hour grace period isn't much to ask. So I ended up at Denny's. Ugh. Bad enough breakfast cutoff time seems to keep being rolled back every time I try to go. It's to a point where I'll probably start phoning before I even bother going. 2) Service is good, for the most part. But every now and again, it seems to go by the way side a bit. These times aren't usually busy times either. You don't need to be constantly wandering my area. But I don't feel I should have to wait an entire 10 minutes just to get my order taken once menus are out down and it's clear I'm ready to go. It's gotten to where I want to eat here less and less. I'm hoping it's teething troubles. It's a fantastic establishment when it's operating on all cylinders. But sometimes things fall down. As I say, I do hope it's temporary.

Yelp
(Clap emoji) bring (clap emoji) back (clap emoji) the mozzarella (clap emoji) sticks (but still five stars never change) P.P.S except for the mozzarella sticks change that back

Yelp
Nice place to be with good company and enjoy a few draft selections. Nice happy hour and all around good vibes.

Yelp
Hi Adriana yes no one explained it and the server quite frankly didn't want to be bothered at all I was there at 11am so not sure how many people are drinking earlier than me but you never know Also please let the chefs no to take time to cook the burgers and not just eat (as I saw several people in kitchen doing while I was there) Thanks

Yelp
This is my spot! They know me here. Feels like Cheers! The staff already knows what kind of beers to recommend me and everyone is so cool. It's totally a surprise that I haven't reviewed this establishment before seeing as though I have been coming here for the past 10 years. Great beers, great service, and the food is solid! The Rueben in my absolute fave, and you can never go wrong with their French Onion Soup and Pigs N a Blanket! This location (off of Colorado Blvd.) is by far my favorite because it is the most chill. I can really relax here, whether I am out with my friends or just solo. :)

Yelp
Beer List is pretty good, the waitress was stingy on the tasters. We ordered enough food and beer... I'm not sure why she had to be that way. The live band kinda sucked. But it is what it is.

Ian

Yelp
So here I am for the England game with a full house. Again, the service is amazing as always. The unfortunate thing is that management I guess only staffed one cook... I wonder how the higher ups expect one cook to serve a full house of patrons all that food without huge wait times. I wish someone with the scheduling power would make a change to this because it's the same story just a different day. Thanks for the wonderful service.... This thanks is to my servers btw

Monino C.

Yelp
It's not as good anymore as it used to be. The food is mediocre at best and the waitstaff is unfriendly. I'll go somewhere else from now on.

Julia M.

Yelp
Well, what can I say. I've loved LBs Trappiste for years and spent entirely too much money...but the laughs and good service outweighed that: Until last evening, Thursday 20 June. There is a new chap wearing a ( man bun ) who absolutely was the worst server I have ever seen or dealt with. Zero personality and was completely oblivious to our request to turn the music down so we could hear one another....then when on of my guests questioned the bill, he was very unfriendly and accusatory.... Remarkable experience. Sadly, our last!

Yelp
Tried breakfast for the first time. Unfortunately First and LAST time.. Server was attentive and friendly, however food was terrible. I ordered the avocado toast, however the server stated they were out of bread, so chose an omelette instead. The menu was a bit confusing as the $12.95 price listed is only for a plain omelette. Add $3.50 for 3 items, 95 cents for additional items. I only wanted 2 items but had to pay the price for 3. Just me, but who orders a plain omelette with nothing in it? Typically an omelette would include at least one item. May as well just order an egg breakfast instead. After ordering, food took approx. 30 minutes to receive and we were the only party there. Pancakes were dry and stiff. My husband picked one up and it was rigid like a piece of toast with no flex at all as he shook his hand up and down. The cook forgot to include the scrambled eggs. Once received 10 minutes later, there were pockets of raw egg. Inedible! I shared my omelette with him which was cooked OK, but over salted. The server apologized profusely and stated they are having staffing issues and will advise the cook and management. Charges were removed from the bill, but no management present. On a positive note, Bloody Mary's were good and they had a dog friendly patio which accommodated our needs. As a pub, I can recommend drinks, but don't order the food.

Yelp
Last time I was at this location was years ago after the Rose Parade. Two of my friends and myself stopped here on Sunday April 22, after the Pasadena Wiggle Waggle Walk. Should have taken note that it wasn't crowded, only a few people having drinks. We ordered pancakes, avocado toast, and egg muffin breakfast. Took forever, almost an hour! They were out of the bread for the avocado toast, pancakes were over cooked, felt and looked like frisbees, unedible, eggs undercooked. Will not go back. Forgot to take pictures of the frisbee looking pancakes

Yelp
7 Years since my last review and all I can say is Lucky B's has gotten even better. The song from Cheers goes goes 'Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name" that's how Lucky Baldwins is. You walk in and feel like you are in the best bar in America. First and foremost the service is incredible. Ryan and Tatiana are truly the very best servers at any bar or restaurant period. They are both friendly, kind and go above and beyond to treat the customer as like they are family. As I walk in they always have a beer ready to go before I even site down and speaking of...The beer selection is incredible with hard to find craft beers from Everywhere, Radiant, There Does Not Exist, Beachwood and many others. The food here is also top notch and this is one of our favorite establishments in Pasadena. Also to note the music here is great, its always something different, Reggae, Jazz, Blues 60's suft music, its all something unique and awesome. The music is never pop music of the day - thank god, it's always something highly curated, something that is beyond rare in most bars and pubs. I also want to call out Dez who is also a really great server and very nice. Highly recommended! Cheers!

Alvaro R.

Yelp
Great British pub, just wondering why there's no sticky toffee pudding. That's a British staple! That's the only thing that would make this even better.
google avatar

Jaime C.

Yelp
Everything I've had here is good. Awesome selection of beers. Good food. Just come here. Just go. It's good. Everyone's friendly. Screens everywhere with sports. It's what a bar like this should be. They even remember my name sometimes.
google avatar

Mark N.

Yelp
Love going here for ABT12 and a Pretzel. Love the pretzel. Not sure why they recently moved the pretzel to the kids menu. Not sure how many kids like a pretzel with brown mustard. But so long as they let me order them, I'll keep coming back.

Kevin T.

Yelp
Great little English pub with excellent selection of draught beer! Has a few big screen TVs which is great for sports.

JM K.

Yelp
My home away from home! (I wish)! Great pints of beer and wonderful pub. They actually have authentic British treats. But they have a GREAT trivia night every Tuesday @8pm check it out.
google avatar

Gail A.

Yelp
Lucky Baldwin's Trappiste Pub reminds me very much of pubs in England. The food is good and good looking. A definite place to return to often.

Frieda C.

Yelp
The people that work at LBs Trappist are amazing. Attentive, going above and beyond what average servers do. Outstanding!

George F.

Yelp
The service was awful. The place did not seem that busy but it took a very long time to get a drink. The man bun guy was also very rude. The food was good however. I will not be returning because of poor service.

T E.

Yelp
Beer selection is good; however, my review is more food oriented. They've never been perfect; some things they've always done well, while others..., m'eh; but, I've continued to be a repeat customer. Lately, all things seem to have taken a hit. This is my plea to ask them to please recover. Staffing issues..., yeah, I get it. Sometimes it's hard to get good help. Positives: bar staff is generally awesome. Personable, friendly and competent. Food items are still..., good..., however, kind of wonder about management decisions. Recently the menu was updated. That usually means prices go up, which I assume to be the case, but quality has also dived: Smaller portions, poor substitutions, and some of the presentation, which was often the magic, has vanished. I kind of understand the cost saving of switching from those lovely (if overly salty) steak fries, but every order of fries that I've had since the change have been cold, limp and lifeless - like biting into a grease capsule. And that beautiful burger? Shrunk to a former shell of itself (still tasty, granted, but sad.) The guy next to me had a... shepherd's pie? The presentation used to be amazing, now it's served in what I use at home as a cereal bowl. Everything seems to be smaller, lack-luster. I still go. It's a habit. And I go for the great staff. Food..., it's cheaper and better elsewhere. Upping the price? I get it under the current circumstances. Lowering the quality, not real happy about that. Both at the same time? Hard hit.
google avatar

Robert U.

Yelp
Service was excellent, beer selection also great, 3 stars is for the food. Food just wasn't as good as many other English/Euro pubs in LA. Pretzel tasted like it was prev frozen. I had the steak Guinness pie and the puff pastry was great but steak was tough and lacked flavor. A friend had the Rueben and said "Wasn't the best Reuben I've ever had, but it had legit chunks of good corned beef and not lame slices of deli meat." other friend had fish and chips and said it was just ok.

Jonathan B.

Yelp
Love this bar. Great beer selection and amazing staff. One gripe--they used to have karaoke on Wednesdays but that has since ended. I miss belting out tunes with Ricardo!! Bring him back! Any night will do!

Renee L.

Yelp
I loved the food and great staff here but I am really going to miss my karaoke therapy being so close to home. I sure hope they bring it back, Ricardo had a great sound system.
google avatar

Ni D.

Yelp
I come here for both their food and beer! The chicken curry is fantastic, pies are good, bangers and mash is so tasty. Beer selection is great with the delirium being my favourite. Service is always wonderful and parking is easy. Highly recommend it!
google avatar

Victoria R.

Yelp
Look, this place is a bit of a dive but perfect when that's what you're looking for. GREAT beer selection including seasonal rotations and solid pub food. Service was pretty good, maybe a little grumpy, but that's kind of the dive vibe for you as well. Know that there's parking in the back as well as on the street. TVs everywhere to watch sports. Enjoy!

Jonathan L.

Yelp
Loved the feel of the bar real friendly atmosphere in this place. Service was good as was the food. We will definitely be there again
google avatar

Kevin W.

Yelp
This location is a small version of the Lucky Baldwins in Old Town. Decent amount of seating inside. Large bar. Came here to drink because the kids party next door was no alcohol. Jame Shots - $10, they gave us large pours all night. Friendly service! I want to come back when they have Pliny on tap.
google avatar

Colin B.

Yelp
Very very nice people that work here. Warm and inviting vibe as I walked in for lunch this past week. I ordered the Reuben and a Pliny the Elder and the food was fantastic! Also, can't go wrong with that beer. I hear they have Pliny the Younger which I haven't tried yet so I hope to give that a whirl. I'll definitely be a repeat customer as I live in the area. Also.. not sure why people are complaining about prices in these reviews. We had 8% inflation over the past year and stuff isn't cheap anymore! Cheers! :)
