DC's New Restaurant Openings - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"A massive chicken in a muir cap and boots sits perched atop the roof of Lucky Pollo on U Street. Come here for charcoal-roasted Peruvian chicken, and sides like mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and yuca fries. Open until 3am, the restaurant also has a secret door that serves as the entrance for the bar District Eagle." - omnia saed

Gotta say - delicious place. My friend and I got the family option 1: full chicken with normal fries, yuca fries, mac and cheese, and plantains Excited for it to be close to where I live - on par with Chicken and Whiskey for the DC locals

Was very excited to try Lucky Pollo and a new gay owned spot in DC. We got the half chicken, chicken salad bowl, yucca fries, mac and cheese, and sweet plantains. Unfortunately there was nothing special about the food. As you see in the other comments, I agree that it is worthwhile to go to Chicken and Whiskey instead. The chicken was fine nothing great. The salad was lack luster and basic. The yucca fries were good, sweet plantains fine, and mac and cheese was cheap. There are better places to eat on U Street. I don’t really plan to come back. Gave it 4 stars to not be a review bomb, but would realistically give this 3 stars.

Imagine if Chicken & Whiskey was more of a fast food spot. But in some ways felt "fresher". Maybe just because of the lettuce and tomato. The wrap was small, and round? It was good, but for the price should've been much larger. There was very little chicken in it. The mac and cheese was straight forward southern style, no complaints but nothing special. This is a great quick option but unfortunately not a go to even though it's on my block. I'd rather walk a few more blocks for Chicken & Whiskey.

Chicken was amazing but sides were a disappointment. Every single one is a heavy starch, without spice. Literally not a single healthy or light vegetable. Potatoes, rice, plantains, more potatoes, and Mac-cheese. They messed up the full order, forgot to give us the right sides, forgot to give us drinks, and just couldn’t be bothered to care about anything. So much potential given the good chicken, but the rest needs an upgrade.

Was excited to try this place as it is across the street from apartment and I love peruvian chicken. That being said the food was quite disappointing. The chicken was under-seasoned, insanely dry and lukewarm. I got two pieces of dark, which are generally not dry, but somehow they managed to do it. The yucca was fine and so was the rice, but the chicken was truly unforgivable, especially considering it was their grand opening and the place was empty. Crazy disappointing.

Wow!!! Me and my family were definitely lucky to find this place. Cruising around Washington DC for one hour looking for a place to eat, the sign and the smell of a roasted chicken led us to this place and it did not disappoint. We ordered 2 chicken and 6 sides. The chicken dip into the green sauce was a hit. Marinade chicken roasted to perfection cannot be duplicated , the best pollo al brasa I’ve ever tasted. This Peruvian restaurant is a must in the DC. The value for good food is also a plus when food in the DC is all over priced with no taste. Mucho savor!!!!

It’s only been open a day and I’ve eaten there twice. Highlights: seasoning and tenderness of the chicken, french fries (10/10), mac & cheese (think Boston market meets Popeyes…iykyk), and surprisingly… the salads. Better prices than chicken and whiskey, better sauces (green sauce>yellow sauce), four sides with a whole chicken (vs C&W, 2), and it just tastes better.

Chicken was so tender and juicy, the yuca fried were literally perfect, crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Most importantly the green sauce is simply perfection😋😋

Yelp
Lucky Pollo is a newer Peruvian chicken place that is open late - Their menu offers quarter dark, half white or dark, or half of a chicken that comes with 2 sides; bowls, wraps, salads, family meals, and various sides (french fries, yuca fries, white rice, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes, and fried plantains). We came here later in the evening, and we ordered their half chicken with fried plantains and yuca fries - The chicken was fresh and piping hot, and the sides were hot out of the fryer - Don't forget their sauces for some dipping actiong! Staff are friendly, and the place was bumping with continuous flow of patrons. Note that they are closed on Mondays! +open late! +closed on Mondays +friendly service

Yelp
I discovered this Peruvian chicken spot on Instagram and decided to give it a try with a friend today. I ordered the Quarter Chicken (dark meat) with French fries, yuca, and an Inca Kola, while my friend had the Lucky Wrap and water. The food was super good, honestly better than most Peruvian chicken places I've tried around the Fairfax area. The chicken was flavorful, and the sides were fresh and delicious. In addition to the great food, the staff was super friendly and welcoming.
