We were on our way back to LA from Fresno, and for some reason, our conversation turned to sandwiches. Different kinds of sandwiches we like, why we like them, especially the ones where the lettuce is shredded, and honestly, does Subway even do their 6 ft party sandwiches anymore? Probably not since COVID.
ANYWHO. At this point in the conversation, I was really craving a good deli sandwich. We were close to Bakersfield, so my partner found this place, then proceeded to read all of the reviews, which were raving. Done deal.
We arrived on a Friday afternoon in the middle of the heat wave that has been sweeping through central CA, and the temperature was somewhere in the neighborhood of, oh, 112 degrees or so. There is a small parking lot next to their "warehouse" (which looks like a space for special events and such - when I poked my head in confusedly, it seemed they were setting up for a banquet or a wedding). You can park there. Others have said that the parking situation could be dicey, but it was fine when we went.
So, there is the restaurant, and there is the market that is attached. The restaurant closes at 2:30pm, the market closes at 4pm (this is a confusing discrepancy between the hours on Yelp and the hours on Google). The market is small and cute, and has a whole counter of meats that you can order by the pound. We headed into the restaurant, and despite the fact that it was already past 2pm (within a half hour of their closing time), they said nothing about that and seated us right away. The interior is very old school Italian American, with the red and white checkered tablecloths and all sorts of news articles, photos, pictures, etc over the walls. Completely family owned - their menu features the story of the restaurant, which was a cute and fun read.
We ordered a Luigi's sandwich (for me), and a little gem salad (for my partner). Both were SO good. The salad dressing was light and refreshing, and the sandwich completely hit the spot. Just a very solid deli sandwich, and exactly what I was looking for. Our server, Melody, was sweet and friendly, and even though they were about to close, we didn't feel rushed at all. Wonderful little stop on our road trip.
