Saint Frank: San Francisco Coffee Shop Will Take Over an Inner Sunset Starbucks | Eater SF

"A longtime small grocer noted for taking over the "freakishly big" former Lemonade location on the strip, positioned as another notable incoming or expanding local business contributing to the block's revitalization." - Paolo Bicchieri

the 17 dollar salmon and shishito pepper salad i got had fuzzy white mold on it. i took a bite before noticing and had to wash my mouth out. this place needs to be more careful about food quality- for that much money i don't want to be worried about literal mold in my food.

I always rob the BMO bank next door to pay for Luke’s excellent but obscenely expensive organic food. The food has increased my lifespan and so if I am criminally charged with robbery of the bank, I will spend even a greater time in jail . Chad, who is Luke’s very fine manager says he will bail me out of jail. But I rather be locked up at Luke’s as I love the display of product labels here . Incidentally, at this store , Thyme and parsley are so nicely potted that I buy them as plants for my apartment . Amazing work by Juan, Nina, Soshana and Kai and Jaden.

I just got home after spending $54 on a small bag of groceries and I'm pretty mad because they mislabeled their prices and were rude when I pointed it out. I'm mad at myself for actually paying for this instead of leaving the groceries and walking out. Be sure to check the prices when they ring you up. Luke's Local charges premium prices (2X Trader Joe's) for supposedly a premium experience, which I'm totally cool with, but little things like mislabeling prices and trying to get away with it can really piss off regular customers. I almost never write negative reviews because I want to support local businesses but charging super premium prices and being rude about it is inexcusable. So here's the story - I wanted to buy some nice veggies for dinner and went to check out the produce section at Luke's since they tend to have nice stuff. Well - everything was quite pricey (Luke's wanted $12 for a bunch of asparagus which would have been $6 at TJ) but whoa - they had some nice romanesco for $3.99/lb in the same bin with the cauliflower. (Romanesco is a type of cauliflower). Since I was at Lukes, I picked up a few other fancy things including fresh pasta, fancy cat food, some Graffeo coffee, and dish soap, which brought the grand total to $54 - which again, I'm totally cool with the price. While ringing me up, the cashier had no idea what my romanesco was, so I told him it was $3.99/pound and pointed right at it (the produce counter is directly in front of the cash register). The sign clearly said $3.99 a pound for cauliflower and regular white cauliflower and romanesco were in the same bin. Perhaps I was overly helpful in saying that "it's a romanesco - it's a fancy cauliflower" - so I guess that's what did it because the computer said that romanesco was $5.99 a pound. WTF? A different cashier (a very rude woman) barged in and said that it's $5.99 a pound even though I was pointing right at the sign that says it's $3.99 with a several other romanesos still in the bin directly over the sign. She pointed to another sign on different shelf a few feet away for the zucchini that said romanesco was $5.99/pound. Well - that's really misleading and I'm mad that I actually paid for this. Yes, I'm writing a 1 star review because they ripped me off by $2 and were rude about it.

I ordered the California Banh Mi sandwich with pork. They ran out of French bread and my switch was on a sourdough roll. The taste is just okay compared to the other places in North Beach. If you want to order a sandwich, it is done from the coffee window outside.

Good selection including gluten free cookies. No dairy with lactose free yogurt. But seems not popular in California. Excellent coffee to go too!!

Great place for fresh produce. The veggies section is always well stocked, fresh, and beautifully displayed. The staff are so helpful and friendly (huge improvement in the past year!)

I am deeply disappointed with Luke's Local due to their inconsistent alcohol policy and the unpleasant experience I recently encountered. As a regular customer who is over 30 years old, I often visit the store to grab a refreshing non-alcoholic beverage. However, this time I was asked for an ID, despite never facing such a request before. To make matters worse, the counter person was rude and insistent on me providing my ID. The inconsistency in Luke's Local's alcohol policy is perplexing. They enforce strict identification checks for a zero-proof "cocktail" called Phony Negroni, which contains carbonated water, cane sugar, natural flavors, citric acid, fruit juice, phosphoric acid, quinine, and sodium benzoate. These ingredients make it an ideal choice for those seeking a flavorful non-alcoholic option. However, they overlook the need for ID checks when selling alcoholic kombucha, which can contain minimal alcohol percentages. As a regular customer who visits Luke's Local specifically for non-alcoholic beverages, I expect a convenient and hassle-free experience. Unfortunately, the inconsistent alcohol policy and the rude behavior of the counter person have shattered my expectations. It is frustrating to be subjected to unnecessary scrutiny and to be treated disrespectfully as a loyal customer. I sincerely hope that Luke's Local takes customer feedback seriously and reevaluates their alcohol policy to ensure fairness and consistency. Additionally, providing proper training to their staff on respectful customer interactions is crucial to improving the overall shopping experience. Based on this disappointing encounter, I regretfully cannot recommend Luke's Local to others. The inconsistent alcohol policy and the unpleasant encounter with the counter person have significantly impacted my perception of the store. As a loyal customer over the age of 30, I had hoped for better treatment and a more enjoyable shopping experience at Luke's Local.

Great place to shop for groceries if you have a ton of money and need to get rid of it, fast. I get that it's a local grocery store and the prices are going to be higher than, say, Trader Joe's, but it's not just 25% to 50% higher or something. It's anywhere from 2X to 5X higher. $19 for a (relatively small) frozen cheese pizza. $13 for a jar of mayo. Over $4 for boxed mac and cheese. The sandwich selection on the other hand is okay. Staff are friendly and the ambiance is nice, except for the off-leash dog roaming around the store. Just a shame the groceries are only for rich people who don't care about money.

Yelp
There a few places to shop for groceries in North Beach. Luke Local grocery on Green street offers lots of varieties of drinks and food. Luke Local has different locations across San Francisco. You can get fresh locally sourced seafood and fresh meat. They have a good selection of wines. When the bars outside gets crowded in North Beach and you want to brown bag it on the street during a street festival this would the place to grab that drink. When you want to go to Washington Square for a random picnic this would be the place to load and reload on the food and drinks. They also have fresh produce. You will find good desserts ( not deserts) inside. All around a good place to go for a liquor run or to grab some groceries in North Beach. Lots of goodies once you are at Luke Local indoor they are some import goods so check the prices because of the tariff war They have a good wine selection for the wine pour but make sure to look at the possible price increase of goods from offshore

Yelp
I love this little grocery store. It has a wide and interesting variety of products, lots of gourmet brands and organics, as well as fresh, frozen, and ready to go. A deli on the far right also offers sandwiches and other small meals to go. It's always busy but the staff is kind and helpful and fun. While it's a bit on the pricy side, I'm never disappointed in coming in here, whether it's to get a snack, find that one ingredient I'm missing, or discover a new sauce.

Yelp
I only purchased a water bottle but was treated with the most stellar service when I visited this past November! From the person who directed me to the correct aisle to the cashier, service was made especially friendly by taking the time to actually look up and provide a warm smile. Store was clean and well organized with several Italian speciality food items.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute little boutique grocery store. My favorite thing is the signature pastrami sandwich! The pastrami slices are a little thinner, which I prefer, and is contrasted by a delicious slaw. Highly recommend their deli for this sandwich, and while you are waiting you can buy your drink in the store itself!

Yelp
I have visited a lot of Italian Grocery Stores all over San Francisco especially the North Beach Area Of San Francisco!!!!! This Luke's Local Grocery is a neat place to do your grocery shopping!!!!! There is a a lot interesting Sodas & My favorite Italian Soda would be the Sugar Free & Regular Mole Cola!!!! Just like the other Italian Deli Store Luke's Local also makes Delizioso Italian Style Sandwiches!!!!!!

Yelp
Ok store, pricey but they have good food. Went in today and they are letting people walk around the store with loose snake. Pretty awful, he stood between the register and the line so you had to walk close to it to check out. Not cool. Mentioned it at checkout and the gentleman said "who cares. It isn't hurting anyone, guess people have their "phobias" Thanks a lot, won't be back anytime soon.

Yelp
Five stars for the service (thank you Dan from Boston) and the saving grace of their SF Italian sandwich and solid drip coffee. Very happy Luke's is now on this corner in North Beach. If you like Gus', you'll be happy to have a Luke's nearby too. Looking forward to trying the No. 580 (breakfast burrito and drip coffee for under $10) soon...

Yelp
Incredible create-your-own sandwiches. Excellent veggie, spread, and bread options. And toasted! The guy who made it provided excellent service.

Yelp
Cute grocery store in the north beach area. They have everything in the store. Deli section was extensive, sandwich menu had interesting options. Did not get to try but will definitely be back. I got the basil, arugula and sunflower seed pesto. It is to die for ... so fresh and garlicky and vibrant. Picky kids ate it all up served with noodles.

Yelp
It doesn't seem like they make too much in-house here, mainly featuring local brands and some fancy national brands. Though the sandwich counter was appealing since they were all made in-house, fresh to order. Had a mixed experience with one decent sandwich and one mediocre sandwich, hence the "OK" 3-star rating. SF Italian: Pretty much what I'd expect to find in North Beach. A bunch of fancy cold cuts, some provolone cheese and a slightly spicy kick on a fresh ciabatta roll. There was some arugula, but it actually worked well to contrast all the richness. Though I did have to manually relocate some of cold cuts since they were carelessly bunched together leaving a portion of the bread without any meat. I'd still totally prefer Alimento for a North Beach sandwich, but this was surprisingly decent for a local chain grocery store. Chicken Meatball Sub: So this one tasted like a grocery store sandwich. The chicken meatballs were spongier than regular meatballs and not as hearty. Also, the sandwich felt kinda small. Like smaller than other meatball subs in North Beach and also smaller than the SF Italian made here. It's a bold move to try to compete with meatballs in North Beach.

Yelp
This is a cute expensive little store. Yes it's pricey. I bought some meat here it was top-notch. The staff are nice, but I really really like about it. Is that as a woman I could shop and not be bothered by the San Francisco sacred cows you know who I'm talking about the people that go into stores and loot and act like, the store is their own personal pantry. Well, there's none of that there so for me it's worth it.

Yelp
I can see why Luke's Local is so popular. Yes, things are pricey, but they are quality goods. I had the pleasure of winning a TGTG bag tonight. If I was a person who wanted gluten-free stuff, this place is it. But I would have to like a tiny spice. Today's haul included a smoothie. Spicy Korean tofu, vietnamese rice roll, gluten free brownie made in San Francisco, and gluten-free pasta. The pastries are half off at night (next to the cash register). I recognize the pastry was from a Berkeley pastry shop. I got an apricot pastry. I really scored tonight! I love San Francisco. Tourists were out and about. It's marathon Sunday.

Yelp
This newest Luke's Local just opened in the heart of San Francisco's North Beach! Find this super cool grocery store on the corner of Columbus and Green streets. It has everything you can possibly want from grab-and-go items to everyday grocery staples. I get their sandwiches a lot when I'm on the go at their other locations in Coke Valley and on Union Street. Great places for morning coffee too :) I'm especially a fan of Luke's organic veggie and fruit selections, as well as their always fresh seafood and meats. This new location is very well stocked! If you're a tourist looking for a quick bite or aiming to stock up on food for your hotel or Airbnb, I guarantee you that this Luke's will meet your needs! Staff is really nice and pleasant too. Thank you to Luke's Local for supporting neighborhoods at a time when local grocery stores are disappearing and when we need them the most in San Francisco. Support local! TIP: Sign up for their rewards program.

Yelp
Came in to pick up a salad and fruits. The service was quick and efficient. Cashier was friendly and helpful. Ambiance is very similar to their location on Union Street, however much smaller! Support small business.

Yelp
I am heavily conflicted as I write this review. Came here just for groceries the other day and immediately thought this was one of those upscale grocery stores, like a Erewhon type ambiance. As I perused the aisles, the prices definitely confirmed my intuition. I ended up getting some beer and a cookie. The cookie was crazy expensive ($4) but was one of the best cookies I've ever had, and thus likes my conflict. As much as it hurt to pay $4 for a cookie, I strongly debated heading right back as soon as I finished it. I didn't get a chance to try the sandwiches but based on the reviews, I'll try one next time! Hate to say it, but I'll probably be back :)

Yelp
Love this place. A very good addition to the neighborhood. Small, but has lots of offering. I live close so this is my go-to local spot when I don't want to go to Trader Joe's. I'm not cheap, but not crazy like some higher end grocery stores.

Yelp
A cool little grocery in North Beach a block away from Washington Square. Went with a friend and ordered two banh mis (one tofu, one chicken) and I got a side of latkes with mine. The people working there are really friendly! We walked around the store while we waited for our sandwiches and Luke's had a good variety of pre-packaged/prepared foods! Since it was a nice day out, we took our sandwiches to eat at Washington Square. The chicken in the banh mi was very high quality. The sandwich itself was a little smaller than I was expecting, but it was still pretty filling! The veggies were tasty and I really loved the addition of avocado in the sandwich. My friend enjoyed her tofu banh mi as well. Not the "best" banh mi I've had in SF, but it was still pretty good! The potato latkes were yummy; not too greasy and I only wish I had a little sour cream or apple sauce to dip them in. Would love to come back to try other sandwiches!

Yelp
Been making my lunch rounds in North Beach, decided to give this place a try thinking it would be a fast wait time given the takeout window. It took a while to get my trippy turkey and ice green tea. I was a little underwhelmed by the sandwich size for the price, but my coworker and felt it's probably the natural shape of the bread that determines the size of your sandwich so naturally a ciabatta or Dutch crunch would be bigger. It listed garlic mayo as an ingredient however I tasted a lot of horseradish. I like the sprouts but wish there were more. It was an okay lunch.
google avatar

Paige N.

Yelp
Genuinely some of my favorite sandwiches in the city! Super creative ingredients that taste beautifully together. I've had the No 960 and the Rotisserie chicken sandwich and both are fabulous! Love the addition of coleslaw to a sandwich. Never a long wait, and you can browse the cute market and pick up beverages / snacks while they make your sandwich. Love this place!
google avatar

Yelp
Luke's makes the best sandos in SF. The pastrami, Italian and BLT are the best! It's very quick to order, and there are nice tables in the shade to relax in.
google avatar

Ian W.

Yelp
Overwhelming prices, underwhelming sandwiches. At least provide something impressive if you're going to empty the pockets of the locals, please. Got the ol' pickle in a bag, to boot.
google avatar

Betty L.

Yelp
1st Day, Grand Opening - Local Grocery Store centrally located in the heart of North Beach, carrying fresh poultry, meat and seafood to produce, wine and cheese plus a deli. And let's not forget the Superb friendly staffs here. One can pickup anything for an afternoon of lounging at Washington Square Park, located less than a block away.
google avatar

Connie N.

Yelp
Clean and well organized. Luke's Local took over what used to be a shared pop-up market place and before that a bank! Good to see this corner of North Beach getting much needed rejuvenation. The store is clean, the staff is nice, the prices are a little high (but it's SF). They have a small collection of goods, cheeses/wines, and a nice meat counter with deli stand for sandwich making. They are card only and will be accepting EBT in the coming weeks - which will be good as most of the lil old ladies of Chinatown who were perusing the store were sticker shocked (price wise and because the prices listed were too small for them to read). Though not sure if this place will survive since I'd probs walk down the street to Molinari's and get a sando from there instead or around the corner to grab some items at The Nature Shop (other local market).
google avatar

Nicolr Z.

Yelp
The ambiance is bright, fresh, and open. Easy to navigate through the abundant aisles. The sandwiches are delicious, artisanal, and very high quality. The service is impeccable, thoughtful, and informational. I will be back.
google avatar

Sonja P.

Yelp
Unfriendly, unwelcoming, and quite awkward. As I waited in line to buy water, I had no clue if he was ready for me to pay or not. He was just whistling, slightly glancing at me, and unpacking brown bags. I just put my item away and walked out after 5 min of awkwardness. I'm not a fan of trying to people please when I'm trying to buy stuff. Two stars because there's benches outside.
google avatar

David B.

Yelp
Such a welcome addition to North Beach! Being able to buy fresh seafood and meat on the way home from work is such a treat. The seafood selection is amazing - halibut, swordfish, tuna, scallops, etc - and I love the local SF products - Papalote salsa, frozen Tony's pizzas, Humphrey Slocombe ice cream. My new staple!
google avatar

Evan K.

Yelp
Everything is pretty expensive here which isn't new if you've been to a Luke's Local before, but we visited last weekend to see how our favorite sandwich on the Union St. location compares. The Horsey Roast Beef is, in my opinion, one of the best things you can get at Luke's Local- it has a ton of meat, cheese, spice from the horseradish, pepperiness from arugula, and a satisfying crunch from the french bread. The sandwich here, however, in comparison to the other location, wasn't as great and took a long time to come out. It felt dry and not as flavorful due to a lack of horseradish and a slab of Swiss cheese stuck in the middle. Furthermore, some of the greens were not prepared well and I was pulling out chunky stems of something that wouldn't break down after chewing for a minute. Overall, while service is nice here, the experience isn't as quick nor as great as if you went to the Marina instead.

Adina D.

Yelp
Experience with an inhumane staff. On January 21st, Sunday, I almost fainted on the street when I was in line to Golden Boy Pizza (2-3 buildings away from the store). The closest thing was this store to which I've been and shopped at only once before. I entered the store holding my hurting stomach and my food in the other hand, and came up to the first staff member I encountered in the store. I asked almost begging about the public restroom. They said bluntly no and continued doing their work not looking at me twice. Granted, I didn't explain my situation properly or had energy to do so, but they could see that I was clearly not well. Even if the rules are so strict about public restrooms in the store, could they have at least told me about a nearby restroom or shown any sort of human sympathy? Or are they trained to treat well only their "customers" who are willing to buy food in the store? As someone who worked in customer services, I was shocked and disgusted with such treatment.

Anthony T.

Yelp
Such a great addition to this area, there's really nothing else like it in a close proximity. Healthy, niche organic products that are hard to find at normal grocery stores. Highly recommend. Friendly staff, perfect location. Vegetarian/Vegan/GF friendly. To name a few of those brands/products: Forager (would prefer the chocolate shake) Marin kombucha Alter Eco Etc.

Zill K.

Yelp
It's a nice local store, they carry my favorite Andy Town's coffee beans, and the cookies they sold there are delicious. It's unfortunate, however, that they don't accept EBT."
google avatar

Tally R.

Yelp
I hope they will be able to accept EBT someday soon. The neighborhood lost safeway and could really use a replacement that is accessible for all
google avatar

Mike N.

Yelp
Bought a pre made turkey sandwich. One slice turkey, limp lettuce, one slice of cheese, one slice of tomato....$13....a complete rip off. Go across the street to Alimentos...for 2 bucks more they will custom make you an awesome sammie.
google avatar

Alison K.

Yelp
Food selection is great, people are nice. Sometimes the lines are long but this is expected wherever you go. Great addition to the neighborhood

Cameron B.

Yelp
Just got the rotisserie chicken sandwich but should be named the rotisserie cabbage sandwich, there was barely any chicken on it at all. 3 stars for it being pretty good for a cabbage sandwich

Jenna S.

Yelp
I make sure to stop by Luke's every time I'm in San Francisco. The store is so much more pleasant to shop at than the big box stores I'm used to back home. The premade food cannot be beat and the staff are helpful and kind. I love seeing all the fresh flowers immediately when I walk in. So glad there are now multiple locations around the city!

Mackenzie M.

Yelp
There was the longest blonde hair in my spicy peanut wraps :-( Be weary of their deli/ prepped food section

Alana H.

Yelp
One of my favorite places in SF. Go here for the best selection of local fruits/veggies/meat, amazing ready made meals & all the special drinks & snacks.

Jess W.

Yelp
this place is great! it has everything a wonderful local grocer should have, another plus...coffee and sandwiches are delicious!
