Lula Mae's Catering & BBQ

First time here and I can’t speak highly enough about this place. Perfectly smoked, massive porch chop sandwich for only $6. It must have been close to a pound. The owner was so kind and took extra care to put on the perfect ratio of sauce and mustard and hand sliced pickles since they only had whole ones. She gave me some great recommendations and even gave me a free sausage to take home and try. I will definitely be back many times.

On a spree across town we decided to go somewhere different. A search brought us to Lila Mae's. First, it's inside a market at a corner gas station. Limited parking. The wonderful smell pulls you in. Several thing on an online menu i saw were not available. It's lunch time and someone just purchased the tray of cobbler and she had no banana pudding. 2+ strikes in my book. My chopped brisket sandwich was tasty but at $8.50 I did expect more. My sons pork chops sandwich had very good flavor but it was the most well done and dry pork chop ever. Shoe leather over done. So I have no pictures of the food, sorry. Too hungry. I have posted the menu for you to see. There have been changes to what I found online. Final thought, good flavor, over cooked pork chop and attention to details are lacking this trip. We're going back to follow up later. Let's hope for the best.

A hidden gem inside of a Citgo gas station. The barbecue is crazy good. The smell permeates your car when you drive by. The brisket is juicy and flavorful. The sausage is delicious times 10. You owe it to yourself to stop by.

First time trying Lula Mae's Had the pork chop sandwich. Good flavor but a little dry. I was able to sample Turkey leg and gotta say it was deeeelicious. I imagine everything else is superb, and look forward to a second visit for the brisket and sausage plate See ya there🤪

We had Lula Mae's BBQ today and I found the brisket to be dry. The smoke flavor was good, a bit over salted, but over all dry. We also bought the smoked pork chops but I did not want to try them after consuming a bit of dried brisket. This was a miss for them today.

There's so much good BBQ in Austin it's hard to hit them all. Lula Mae's is about a 5 minute drive from me and I finally crossed it off my list today when DoorDash sent me a 25% off coupon for pickup. Got a 2 meat plate for $15 before the coupon, and picked brisket (obviously) and pork chop, thanks to Yelp's recommendations. Both were very tasty, and it came with great mac & cheese and green beans. Had about half of the plate, so it's 2 meals easily for me. It wasn't my favorite BBQ in town, but it is definitely a solid choice.

Finally stopped in. Ordered a sliced brisket sandwich. Extremely flavorful. Had the bbq added to the sandwich. Wished I asked for heavy sauce. Overall, I'm pleasing...fair price, good sandwich.

Got off the plane and wanted some Texas BBQ! What we discovered was not only great BBQ but serious hospitality to go with it. Unfortunately Angel (the owner) was out of Brisket, but to make up for it she gave us a free sample of everything else she had left. Clearly, Her mom named her appropriately. We left with a sandwich, some sausage, and smiles on our faces. We will most definitely stop in for Brisket on our way back to the airport at the end of our trip. (She promised to save me some ) Highly recommend!

Lula Mae's is a gem. Do not be fooled or discouraged since they are serving food from a convenience store. Food is delicious and the portions are satisfing. Highly recommend the brisket. Also the person at the counter, who I assume is the owner, is very nice and the type of person who just puts a smile on your face when you talk with them. She really made the experience great from the beging and the food just sealed the deal.

I forgot to take pics of the food because I scarfed it down too quickly. The roasted chicken at Lula Mae's is AMAZING. So smoky and juicy. I was very pleasantly surprised with this item given that brisket is usually king at a BBQ shop in Texas. (Note: I did not get to try the brisket since I came too late in the evening and she was sold out. I'll return earlier next time.) The sausage is very nice and flavorful. The green beans were simmered until soft. The porkchop was rich and meaty...although I personally preferred the chicken over the porkchop. Lula Mae's tastes like your mama's home cooking. It's comfort BBQ done right. It's your neighborhood BBQ stop. I'm a fan! (located inside BREW convenience store...there isn't a very obvious sign but you'll see the counter in the back once you walk in.)

Yikes! My 1st visit was excellent, but this second visit (several months later) was disgusting. The mac and cheese tasted like they either used buttermilk or expired milk. Same for the desserts. The banana pudding especially tasted like it cake straight from the box, soggy, gross. The green beans are still decent but I'm not sure if I'll be returning.

This is the 15th consecutive year that my wife and I have visited Austin for a month long reprieve from our cold and snowy Canadian winters. This is the first time we tried Lula Mae's BBQ ... it is nothing short of fantastic. Wish we had found this place earlier. Lula Mae greeted us as if we were family, we told her it was our first visit, she sat us down and gave us samples of her smoked brisket, sausage and pork chops ... The brisket was "melt in your mouth" fantastic as was the sausage and pork chops. I ordered the three meat platter and my wife ordered the two meat platter, each included two sides. The meat portions were huge! Lula Mae's is inside the CITGO gas station store, her area is small and geared more for take out as evidenced by the customers who came in for brisket sandwiches while we were visiting. The place is easy to miss and not well signed so just look for the CITGO gas station on the corner of Airport Blvd & E 38 1/2 Street. The brisket and sausage were better than the old Texas Rib Kings that used to be on Burnet and Research and definitely better than The Saltlick BBQ because her BBQ is all about the smoke ... not the sauce. The brisket pulls apart with a fork! My wife would never eat brisket or sausage in the past ... she loved it at Lula Mae's, we had great food and a great visit, both provided by a wonderful lady.

This place is killer. It's different than the current Austin trend of heavy bark on the brisket, this is a more old school, style with more flavor. All of it has a lot of smoke flavor, especially the sausage. Hands down best sausage! Hope they stick around!

First time visiting this place. It is inside a convenience store but don't be fooled! This is one of if not the best BBQ I have had since being in Austin!!! And I have had a lot of them! Not only was the brisket melt in your mouth but there was a excellent selection of other choices. The chicken was outstanding and full of flavor. I have never had BBQ pork chops in a BBQ place before and that was a real treat.The Mac and cheese was superb. The beans had outstanding seasoning and were done just right. Finally the peach cobbler was to die for! Overall do yourself a favor and try this place it is worth it!

Amazing! I work down on Airport and have been meaning to try the place for quite a while. Last Saturday, I finally did and I am sorry it took me so long! The brisket was perfect. The potato salad was top notch. The customer service was wonderful. The owner greeted me like we were old friends - I will definitely be back. It's a hidden gem in the ATX!

It was a group of us from out of town who excitedly decided to go to Lula Mae's because it was highly recommended with having the best chicken in town. Being from out of town, we wanted to support a Black small business. Once we got to the restaurant, the first thing the man behind the counter said was, "Here are a lot of people coming in who did not order ahead." We told him we were from out of town and heard they had the best chicken. We also wanted to dine in. The man behind the counter commented about how hot it was in the restaurant. We told him we did not care because was hot everywhere. It was a record hot temperature outside, above 100 degrees. After we looked at the menu, one of the people in my party did not want to eat there. Due to that, we all left and the man that was behind the counter said, "Keep cool," as if we were the ones complaining about the heat when in fact it was him! As we were getting in our Uber, another person in the party said the man behind the counter was using profanity towards us. All in all, we never got to try the food. The service and hospitality were horrible! I would never suggest anyone from out of town to go there. My advice to the management at Lula Mae's? Update your website if you are not going to allow people to dine in as well as if you want people to call ahead! I have NEVER experienced such disrespect from a small business before and I know Ms. Lula Mae is turning over in her grave! You all should be ashamed of yourselves! Get it together!

YUM! This food is amazing!! We had the brisket & sausage. The brisket was probably the most tender brisket I've ever had. Can't wait to come back on a Friday for turkey legs & ribs! We did have a little trouble finding it.....it's in the back of the convenient store for those of you who may have the same problem.

Like are u effing serious? You mean to tell me that I have been passing by this place multiple times a week with intentions on trying. Just to finally try and effing kicking myself for all the times I've should've. This bbq is amazing. It's real bbq not the ish the yuppies flood to. The turkey legs and pork chops are so good I almost pissed on my self lol. Next I'm going to try the ribs if they aren't sold out! Good job guys even tho for now this is my favorite new hidden gem.

The spot definitely throws you off as it's connected to a gas station. Stuffed in the corner was her spot, unfortunately for us we came towards the end of the night where we got the scraps. She definitely made meals for all of us (4 kids, 4 adults) from what was left. She tried to take care of us with what she had and of course have us a deal. I believe if we had been there with all the food available, this rating would have been 5 stars!

The meats, sides, and desserts are all exceptional. Not to take the spot light off the whole menu, but I go there for the Brisket. It's made with a dry rub of tantalizing taste bud bombs of flavor. The smoke process that Glenn uses results in an aromatic smoke taste to your taste pallet that you would otherwise only be able to capture if you could smoke the pit like a pipe. Both the lean and moist cuts are satisfying. Tenderonie best describes the texture to your teeth. While the Brisket is my personal favorite I can note say enough about the sausage, pulled pork, poke chops, the tater salad, green beans, and mack and cheese. After eating the peach cobbler I had to excuse myself, I had a moment cause it brought back memories of my grandmother. Great food, great folks. I love barbq and I adore Lula Mae's Catering.

Omg! This spot is the best bbq I've had in austin!! I know it's inside a convenient store but dude seriously the flavor is unbelievable. The couple that run this spot are hilarious but adorable. Shoot dude I've told almost everyone I know to try this place. I'm not even joking bro it's that good. Might have to wait just a tad bit but it's worth it. I'll be back to try the chop sandwich and Turkey legs that I hear fall off the freaking bone! Go try now!!

Very nice lady with some delicious pork chop sandwich and peach cobbler. I finally decided to stop by there as I been craving BBQ Pork Chops and she's the only one in the area that has it on the menu. The size was very well proportioned for the price of $5.50 for the sandwich. Well worth the price. The pork chop was not over done nor dry. Was tender and moist but could use a bit more flavoring, however the smoking was perfect. She was nice enough to offer me some free peach cobbler. I'm very picky when it comes to cobbler and this was delicious enough for me to get some more next time. My review is only on what I bought and the customer service. She is Austin grown and black owned so I always try to support any black owned business. Make sure to stop by her location. She's inside the Brew Market & Cafe Corner Store at Airport Blvd and 38 1/2.

Doesn't look like much but Angel makes excellent bbq that has soul food sensibilities. She's sweet and funny but the food speaks for itself. She sells out quick for good reason. Pork chops and ribs are my personal favorite but everything I've tried here is excellent

Lulu Mae's BBQ is absolutely delicious - and Lulu Mae is an amazing person. Highly recommend the Ribs (Fri/Sat only!) and the brisket.

This is hands down some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Got the brisket and asked to have some of the burnt ends included. Delicious! Also got the sausage and a side of Mac and cheese. This stuff is the real deal. We even got a grilled turkey leg Don't be put off by the fact that this little place is located in the back corner of a citgo gas station. It's a diamond in the rough and I promise you won't be disappointed. We will be back soon to try out the banana pudding and peach cobbler.

A Rising Star in Austin's BBQ Scene, Lula Mae's Brisket is perfect, sides are delicious, and her customer service is very customer focused. I hope to see Lula Mae's ascend to the top spots in the annual bbq "best-of" lists soon.

We're new to town so I was a bit hesitant in trying this place. Yet, I'm happy we did! Mrs. Anna was extremely polite, friendly, and very welcoming. The brisket, Mac &cheese, green beans, and potato salad were all equally seasoned with love and deliciousness:) The previous Yelp review was nothing short of right when he called this place a "hidden gem"

I live very close by and had seen this place recommended on my neighborhood Facebook. It's awesome to have a woman-owned bbq spot. I ordered a lot of food for a work lunch. The brisket and sausage were great! It was all high quality meat. She uses store bought bbq sauce which is not great, but I don't put any on my meat anyway. It's hard for me to judge the sides because I don't like those types of sides from anywhere. My coworkers liked them a lot. I would return to eat here again and it's an affordable bbq option with no crazy waits.

This BBQ is amazing. Lula Mae has a street side smoker and grill plus counter service tucked away behind the register of the Citgo at the corner of Airport Bvd and 38 1/2 St. Angel, daughter of Lula Mae, is friendly and won't hesitate to put together a delicious and affordable meal for you to take home. My boyfriend and I got a sampler, if you will, of sausage, turkey legs, pork chop and brisket. They throw in the bread, pickles and onions and BBQ sauce if you want. The meat itself is so good though you may forget you have sauce, too. Everything was fresh and flavorful. We felt like we had a feast when we got home. Oh...and two words PEACH COBBLER.

I found this place while exploring local restaurants on yelp. Went over to pick up some lunch around 12- it's super close to the Mueller neighborhood. I met the owner as she handed me a sample of a smoked turkey leg that melted in my mouth! This was my first visit so I wanted to try my usual BBQ go-to items. I ordered a two meat plate with brisket and chicken. The portion of chicken was an entire quarter on the bone. While she was cutting my brisket, the owner gave me a few samples of the brisket, showing me how the way you cut the meat impacts the tenderness of the bite! She also gave me a taste of the sausage which I didn't even order- delicious! The sides of green beans and mac and cheese were very tasty, and the portion of food was too much for me to finish for lunch. I'm looking forward to finishing the rest later. I will definitely be returning and recommending to friends in the area! I love supporting great local businesses versus the established chains. Give it a try!

Great meat and the service was spectacular! The owner is the nicest woman and hooked us up! The sandwich is so big, I could barely finish half! Will definitely be back!

Went there for the first time today. About as good as it gets. Had a three meat plate with brisket, pork chop and sausage. Very tasty with the right amount of smoke. The sides of green beans along with the macaroni and cheese were good as well. They are very friendly and located inside the Citgo at the corner of Airport and 38 1/2 St. Carry out is the name of the game here. They sell plates, sandwiches and by the pound barbeque as well as desserts. Pay them a visit. I doubt you will be disappointed.

Please update yelp to reflect the true operating hours. We drove several miles just to find out they are closed sundays and Mondays.

This bar-q-q was very tasty! My brother told me about it, so I had to come try it out. Only thing...Wish there was a place to sit but still enjoyed my lunch in my truck! OMG!!! My boyfriend and I were looking for BBQ and we lucked upon Lula Mae's! It was so freaking good! Everything was delicious, EVERYTHING! I had the sausage and brisket and I was NOT disappointed

I've had a lot of Texas BBQ at some of the top places (Franklin's, Sat Lick, Micklewaith, La Barbecue and Kerlin) and I can tell you that Lula Mae's is right up there on the top! The brisket is well seasoned and just melts in your mouth. The customer service is top notch, the owner welcomes you like family. This place is a hidden gem that puts out great BBQ. I'll definitely be back.

I went here for the first time today and I'm so glad I did. Amazing barbeque! I was going to take a picture of the brisket but my husband ate it all before I could. I highly recommend Lula Mae's!
