Came in for lunch with some friends about a month ago around 1:15 and we were told we couldn't dine in because they closed at 2. That was fine even though lunch doesn't have table service and our food came out about 10 minutes after we ordered, so we definitely would've been done before they started closing. But no big deal. I was planning on ordering the chilaquiles because I have a wheat allergy and it was one of the only things on the menu I could eat. When I ordered, I was told I could not get the chilaquiles to go because they didn't have the proper to go containers for chilaquiles. So instead, I ordered the breakfast platter which was 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, a hash brown, and toast. This came in a to-go container which would've been completely acceptable for chilaquiles, in my opinion, but I understand that's their policy for some reason. I could not eat the toast because of my allergy so I ended up paying $15 + tax and tip for a meal that left me unsatisfied.
I went back today for lunch, an hour and a half before they closed, excited to finally try the chilaquiles. Realized right away that the menu changed and they were no longer serving chilaquiles. That's fine, I decided to get the Turkish eggs. On the menu they're listed as "poached eggs, allepo oil, dill yogurt," which are all ingredients that I can eat. As I was ordering, my friend told me it comes with bread (even though it does not have that as a listed ingredient on the printed menu) so I asked if I could just not get the bread. I was told no, I said I have an allergy. I was told no again, so I asked if I could just get the bread on the side. They went to the kitchen to ask the owner if I could do that and came back and said no again, no substitutions. Even though I wasn't asking for a substitution. Also, on the bottom of the menu it says to talk to servers about any food allergies. But why????? If you're literally going to make it impossible for me to eat any of your food. They suggested that I just "eat around" the bread, which is just a non-suggestion.
So now the only options were the breakfast plate that I got last time that wasn't worth my money, a mushroom omelette (I don't like mushrooms or I would've happily gone with an omelette), and a Caesar salad. The salad was listed as "little gem, parm, anchovies, lemon, garlic." Caesar salads usually have croutons or breadcrumbs so I asked to make sure it didn't since that wasn't listed on the menu. The server went to the kitchen again to ask the owner and came back saying "he'll make an exception and not include breadcrumbs just this one time but it won't happen again."
For a restaurant SO unwilling to accommodate food allergies, you should remove that clause on your menu and have every ingredient listed on your menu. At MINIMUM there should be a key to tell you which foods are gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, etc. I'm very low-maintenance when it comes to ordering at restaurants with my allergy. I always stick to dishes that I know won't have wheat in them instead of being difficult and asking for substitutions.
Reading through other reviews I can see that many other people have issues with the ridiculous rules as well. The owner is extremely defensive and stubborn in all of his replies. Will never be coming back, and I'm sure he'll be happy about that.
