Took my friends to Lulu for the first time last week and overall we enjoyed it. I will say the reason I will go back to this place was the cocktails. Amazing cocktails, very inventive and extremely impressive with the way they are mixing different flavors. For example, I had a cocktail on their menu, named GameStop, with Japanese whiskey and ancho chili verde, and I was perplexed how they were going to pull this off and it ended up being delicious and I can't wait to go back and have it again!
Besides the yummy cocktails, the food was quite good as well. But, there were a few things that were not exactly ideal. We went on a Thursday night and arrived around 8:15PM, and left around 11pm. The difference of when we arrived and when we left were black-and-white. Around 9:30 PM it started to get incredibly packed and by about 10 PM it was almost full blown night club atmosphere. The music got loud, the lights were low, the energy was high, and it was a really exciting atmosphere overall. Although, with this type of crowd and energy while sitting down for a nice dinner (a bit spendy), the downfall can be that you're yelling across the table to hear each other and it's so crowded when you get up to go order another drink at the bar that you might be waiting quite a while if you're even lucky to squeeze your way through. Beware of this if you choose to come here in the later part of the evening. For my friends and me, this is not a dealbreaker. We enjoy a great atmosphere and even though it wasn't ideal, we appreciated the present moment. Though, I can easily see this being frustrating if you expect a sit down dining experience.
We started with the Peruvian fries and gluten-free calamari, and both were delicious. The fries were very flavorful with the sauces and toppings, and definitely filling. Then my friends and I ordered a couple entrées to share, the ceviche and the wings and noodles dish. Unfortunately, the entrées took over an hour to come out, even though it didn't appear any other tables were waiting on food. We weren't sure we were going to get our food at all. And it wasn't easy for us to be able to check on our food since what is bar counter service and it was so crowded. Luckily, this was acknowledged right away from the food runner/busser who brought the entrées out and offered to give us a free dessert to make up for the long wait time.
Overall, it seems that LuLu is intentionally drawing in that nighttime young party crowd past 9 PM, and that works really well for the establishment. But if you don't anticipate that, you might be in for a surprise. Especially as it appears to be more of a sit down restaurant. Again, not a bad thing that it was more of a night cocktail lounge; honestly it was fun and sexy, and we still had a good time. I will be back, but personally might avoid the late night club scene unless I'm in the mood for that particular setting, though I think it would be a great place to grab cocktails earlier in the night.
