"There have never been fewer music venues in Miami, which is why we should all be grateful that Luna Star Cafe persists. This North Miami cafe has been around for over 20 years, and is a local epicenter of folk music, an unlikely genre in this land of DJs and reggaeton. But Luna also hosts open mics, jazz, blues, and more on a stage about the size of a hot tub. The narrow space is full of tchotchkes accumulated over two decades, and the daily specials are written on a chalkboard behind the cluttered bar. Sit there and you can chat with regulars who’ll tell stories about being in the same elevator as Bob Dylan. We just came for the music, so we can’t vouch for the food, a mix of sandwiches, pasta, and rotating specials. But the beer selection is diverse and the music usually starts around 7:30pm. Just know that it’s cash-only and there’s usually a cover fee that goes towards the musicians, as well as a $10 to $18 minimum on food and drinks." - Ryan Pfeffer

Take me back in time, where things were simple, honest, & beautiful! Luna Star Café is a ticket to all that's pure & delicious, & the MUSIC IS TOP NOTCH! We are from Louisiana, & this Artsy COOL Café felt like New Orlean's finest! Decorated with delightful Art from top to bottom, with a cozy, inviting vibe perfect for listening to poetic musicians...original music lives here! I loved every bite of my Greek plate, & the Angel Hair Pasta Bologna looked so tempting! They serve Leffe Beer! I visited the Brewery in Dinant, Belgium years ago! Go in & go back in time to when things were real & totally enjoyable! Cash only...so stop by the atm down the street at El Presidente grocery.

Google
This may be the best cafe in the area. It was a really great experience.

Jorge Lafosse

Google
Awesome place to listen to music in a very intimate setup! Reminds me of New Orlean style jazz joints. Grab a glass of wine or beer and enjoy the show! The food is amazing as well!

Google
$8 as a Broward Folk Club member and the purchase of a meal was all it took to hear some lovely music with friends. The venue is small... reminds me of some hangouts in Nyack, NY I'd frequent back in the day... sweet and intimate...

Google
Nice local vibe, great live music, good food, large selection of beers!

Dany Stasolla

Google
This place left a bitter taste in my mouth, when they invited me to come to the open mic, not informing me that it's a "pay to play" venue. Upon showing up, they asked for an $18 minimum purchase just to perform at the venue, because it's apparently the artist's responsibility to support their venue. They must not understand that many artists are paid professionals and it's actually a generous thing to perform free and entertain their clients. There's no reason to spend money at the venue, when there's plenty of free open mics around.

Great food. Great atmosphere. Low key place to enjoy live music with good friends and meet new ones.

Yelp
I love this place! Service is fantastic food is amazing Been eating here for years. Love you Alexis!!! I miss Miami I used to hang out for hours and read my poems on open mic and watch many a band play. The Halloween party I attended once was amazing

Yelp
Driven by this place several times and finally decided to go inside. The best thing about this place is the beer selection, in my opinion. The live music is cool too. I've never tried the food, but I hear it's good. Decided to grab a pizza bc it's hard to go wrong with pizza and we got this beauty. The only disclaimer about this place, CASH ONLY. It's a small obstacle to get over, but just to keep in mind. CASH ONLY! Otherwise, head in and check out the cool ambiance and beer selection.

Juan M.

Yelp
We were surprised to see that WE COULDN'T GET IN , cause it was super busy and there were no place to seat, we stayed outside for a minute and heard the music and said WE HAVE TO COME HERE EARLY!! so come here early, it is a small place so plan ahead, IT LOOK ECLECTIC AND ARTSY

Marty B.

Yelp
The owner is straight up awesome and friendly. Everyone I know loves this place for the music vibe and the great beer and wine selection. The food is really good also. It's a small place so get there before 8pm when the music typically starts. The artwork on the walls and restroom is very interesting. They only take cash, no cards.

Nichelle W.

Yelp
OK so this is gonna be my new go to quickfix eclectic Quain spot... www.lunastarcafe.com so about last night, went with my friend Alan who says he used to frequent this place many moons ago and the owner is a friend of his whom I did meet.. she is a doll. We sat in front of the stage because it's the only table that was open and we ordered some wine, some brie and we shared a pasta dish. The food was good the wine was great but the entertainment was actually what got me..the group at Wagner Hand and Pflug was great, whpbandfl.com they are an acoustic folk rock band. They played everything above below and around that genre. I had a great Friday, earlier The evening we went to The Museum of contemporary Art and saw Dr. Ed Calle (Google him) excellent concert. Now this is how you spend a Friday night.

Mayako N.

Yelp
I only ordered the beer here. They have a huge list of beer available and it's very difficult to choose one. But the friendly server helped me pick one. It was smooth and good beer. When music starts, this place turns into a live music venue. The place was packed and I enjoyed music. 4 stars for cash only.....

Katie D.

Yelp
What a down to earth place with great music and a huge selection of wine and beer! Honestly the food was amazing, and the music was great to boot! I'll be returning for sure!

Sharon L.

Yelp
The food is always amazing and Alexis and her fabulous staff always take great care of everyone's to a great home-cooked meal excellent music and great company. One of the best places in South Florida. If you're not here you're missing out

Raphael G.

Yelp
An amazing selection of beers, 3 pages worth. Interesting food such as Elk, Antelope, and Wild Boar Bratwurst. This is a venue with live music and at times open mic. Quality singers and comedians. The bartender, Rebecca is so friendly and attentive. She definitely will make you feel welcome as a first timer. Free street parking right in front of the bar is a big plus. Definitely a must to add to your roster.

Brad S.

Yelp
Holy Jazzy Sounds Batman!! This place is amazing and the food is fantastic too!! We were here on wednesday, yes wednesday. it's jazz night. it featured 1 or two musicians and 2 amazing musicians joined them! what a fabulous night music and great dinner.. and good beer too! We'll be back.. fo sho!!

Shere Z.

Yelp
I'm so happy this place is still able to operate during COVID. It truly is a gem. Strongly recommended for its food service and music.

Yelp
I was excited to visit Luna Star Cafe. My boyfriend and I are always searching for a good open mic to play at and see great musicians, and we'd heard really good things about Luna. Tonight we finally made our way down from Fort Lauderdale, but the experience was not good for us. There is a rule that each person needs to spend a minimum of $13 on food or drink. This rule was not posted on the website calendar where the event was advertised, and was not on the open mic sign outside. We only found out about it once we were already inside. I ordered a drink but my boyfriend did not. The waitress must not have liked that because soon after the owner came over. She told us we had to order $13 worth of items each or we had to leave, and repeated several times this wasn't Starbucks and we couldn't just walk in off the street and be in there. We never once said we wouldn't abide by the rule and pay the minimum before the end of the night. For some reason she just decided we weren't trustworthy people and proceeded to embarrass us in front of the other customers there. After she was done we felt very unwelcome and left after paying for my drink. We were only there for less than 15 minutes. I wanted to be able to enjoy what was so special about Luna, and hoped it would be a place we visited often. But after such poor treatment I couldn't stay and give them any more of my money. My advice to Luna would be either charge a cover to enter (not everyone wants to order food/drink at an open mic) or make the $13 minimum clear to new customers BEFORE they enter your establishment. Also, don't assume the worst in your customers, treat them with kindness and respect. We were planning on paying the collective $26 before the owner came over and spoke down to us for no reason.

Yelp
Luna Star is the bar where the local MOCA art/hippie crowd likes to hang out on 125th. It's very small and cramped, and some of what little space they do have is consumed by the small stage they have set up in the front. But the stage does get a lot of use, as on any given night, you'll find a live performance happening. If you're one that likes acoustic/folk singer-songwriter type music, then you'll likely find something right up your alley there. It's a coffeehouse that also serves food and beer. I'm not much of a coffee drinker and I don't like folk music, but one thing I do enjoy is their beer selection. They have a great selection of beers to choose from - stuff that you wouldn't find in many other places. I can't comment on the food, since I've never eaten there, but frankly Luna Star isn't my cup of tea (coffee?). The first big (huge) negative is that they don't take credit cards. But to me the biggest sin is that they'll hit you up for money to pay the performer and not tell you ahead of time that there's a cover charge. This happened to me last Friday. I went there to grab a beer and hang out and didn't see any prominent signs stating that there was a $10/person charge for the band. After having already sat down, ordered my beer and sipping on it for a few minutes, the waiter comes around with the jar asking for money. Now, I don't mind that they want to charge $10 cover for the band, but it should've been stated up front (like on a big sign or before the waiter sat us at our table and took our order), that's just bad business on their part. After that incident (and seeing that others have had the same experience), I don't know if I'd recommend this place if you're looking to just have a beer and hang out. My recommendation would be to go across the street to Billy's, but if you're looking for the eclectic crowd/beers of the world combination you find a Luna Star (but replace folk musicians with young, local DJs) head a few miles north to Hollywood and go to PRL off Young Circle and enjoy.

Yelp
This post is actually a little embarrassing. After living here a year, I just found to find out there's an intimate live music venue, with great beer, food, and musicians - just minutes from my house. Moving from Athens, GA (which is full of live local music), this is such a relief that I will swallow my pride and post anyway. Beware of the list of rules on the menu and posted on the door; however, these are some of the best rules I've seen posted anywhere in a while. Rules such as: No Budweiser, Coors, Heineken, or Amstel sold here. (thanks!) No talking during the show (finally.) No sex in the bathroom, unless it's with yourself (Well...we'll have to work on that one ;-) To assist those new to microbrew in following the rules, there's the best beer dictionary I've ever seen. There is a description of each beer genre and full descriptions of each beer. The price is $$ - $$$ depending on how much you eat and drink, since as we know, good beer ain't cheap. Brent B. and I ordered the baked brie with honey and garlic and the Mediterranean pizza. Both were full of homemade hippie goodness. The staff was friendly and despite the small space and the show, very attentive. Just make sure to BRING CASH, since they do not accept any plastic. I'll be sure to check out the music line up and pick a night to return.

Yelp
This is a great addition to Greater Miami's coffee culture scene. They not only servce coffee, beer, and delicious food, but they also provide live entertainment & concerts, poetry nights, karaoke, and plenty of bohemian culture. Locally grown, it is only open at night when the people comes out to feel alive. And this place lets them feel that way.

Alexa C.

Yelp
This place holds a special place in my heart. I can guarantee that there's no other place like it in all of miami. It's a great spot to have a nice craft beer or wine with a delicious appetizer or entree that surpasses what bar food is, listen to some good tunes (usually live), and hear local talent perform all while having some nice conversation. The owner Alexis is basically best friend material & there's a reason she's been in business for so long. You'll find quirky stickers all over the place & the atmosphere is super laid back yet artsy. The staff is super friendly and attentive; they even give me the pretty glass whenever I come. On the nights they have acoustic music, there are cover charges depending on who's playing. Don't be such a wuss, pay up. Don't forget to bring cash because it's the only method of payment accepted. Remember, Good beer ain't cheap & cheap beer is just cheap beer. Plus there's a 1950s taxi in the back that's a great photo opp just don't be a fool and break something because I will find out.

Claudia F.

Yelp
Nice place and great beer selection! Good band and you step outside of typical miami scene and see & hear local real people.

Kelly L.

Yelp
I wish there were more places like this in south Florida. It has a great, laid-back vibe, great appetizers, and live music. It's perfect for a half hippie like myself, who finds Wynwood far too trendy and overcrowded.

Hortensia M.

Yelp
This place is awesome! Costumer service un Rebecca and the owner was extraordinary. Rebecca even went out of her way to get me a charger to charge my phone. The food is delicious. Being vegetarians we were very satisfied. It was open mic but the performers seemed so professional and had such good voices they seemed to have years doing what they did. Great atmosphere and a wonderful selectio of beers. Extremely satisfied.

Annalisa D.

Yelp
I spent this past Friday night at Luna Star Cafe with a bunch of friends listening to Chris Phipps & London Exchange play to a packed house. If you haven't been to this North Miami stalwart yet, put it on your hit list. This folksy, unassuming little spot is the last of its kind in Miami and among few that hosts live acoustic music regularly in a casual, laid-back atmosphere. Wedged between the vintage shops along 125th street in North Miami and opposite the Museum of Contemporary Art, Luna Star Cafe brings to mind the coffee houses of yore. Its quirky, eclectic interior features a scattering of tables at the front, an old-time bar at the back and a small stage for performers. There's nothing minimalist about this place! Local art adorns the walls and every shelf is an ode to the owner's (Alexis), eye for kitsch and love of travel. Cast your eyes around and you'll spot wee curios nestled in various nooks throughout. Exceptionally friendly and helpful service greet one upon entering. The menu features an extensive mix of specialty beers and an impressive selection of eats (made-to-order pizza, pasta, salad, lite bites and desserts) to satisfy everyone's taste buds. Note, cash only. Parking is readily available along 125th street or at surrounding parking lots. Luna Star Cafe is an original, it's been around for 20+ years and I hope it's around for another 20, or more!

Andrea W.

Yelp
When you walk into this unsuspecting 1200 sqft. joint, you walk into another town. FORGET MIAMI AND ITS BEACHES! Personality paints the walls from ceiling to floor. Exhibitions, political posters and next month's musical lineup adorn this San Franesque coffee shop. The staff is truly kind and helpful. They all know where they work and what they are serving. The owner Alexis brings the establishment some of her own flavor: decorating the bar with all of her favorite gadgets and toys for your amusement. Check out the website for events. They open and close the place as they please. They may stay open a few extra hours and play some of YOUR favorite music if you ask nicely. CHERRY ON TOP - they have a list of over 100 beers... beautifully described

Rodolfo T.

Yelp
TERRIBLE VENUE TO HANG OUT AT. The owner is a very rude person. They only take cash and there is a cover charge. If you dont have cash, because we are in the year 2018, they owner shames you in front of the crowd. Happened to my wife and i twice

Daryl S.

Yelp
Such a unique and friendly place. It's a bohemian cafe, but with a really nice stage for live music and a frankly incredible beer selection. Dozens upon dozens of selections from around the world - if you're an enthusiast, it's worth checking out just for the beers. But they also have a nice wine list, and excellent food as well, with sandwiches and pizza and pasta, and even escargot (!). A very welcoming vibe, too, they couldn't be nicer. It's a gem.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Luna Star is awesome. Great Service. Engaging Atmosphere. The best selection of imported beer in north Miami. Across the street from MOCA and dive bar Billy's Pub Too.

Liz B.

Yelp
This is a very special, sometimes magical place for live music, good food and friendly people. Luna is a performance venue for artists of all kinds. The music varies each night between folk, rock, jazz, blues, R&B and country. There are regular jazz jam sessions if you want to participate; the schedule is posted on their website. Many musicians perform original music. Luna also hosts art exhibits, literary talks, songwriter meetings and the occasional community event or fundraiser. Everyone is welcome. Luna Star Cafe has a great collection of craft beers (and wine). The food includes healthy options and is reasonably priced. (Bring cash, because they don't take plastic). The service is excellent, and when you go back the second time, they will remember your name. It's a gathering place. You can have some great conversations with your fellow patrons, because the people are warm and unpretentious. I love sharing this place with friends who are new to South Florida; there's nothing else like it!

Marcos R.

Yelp
Hmmm.... I had a so so time there. We went on a slow night, just for a drink. Because there was someone playing on guitar, they wanted to charge us a cover. It was kind of silly, since there were only 3 other people in the bar. And then they had this weird rule about having a minimum order charge. Like you had to purchase, $7 dollars worth of beverage or food. I can't remember what the exact dollar figure was. So there was that, and also they don't take plastic. All and all it was a little annoying, having to deal w/all the inconveniences that we were imposed with. I thought the beer was a little pricey, but I do like that they are right across the street from the MOCA and also Billies pub. I'll stroll in there again. I think I might've just picked the wrong night, I don't know. I'll pay them another visit and give it another shot.

Marc F.

Yelp
I love coming to Luna Star Cafe. While you always need cash, since they don't accept credit cards, for me it is always an adventure walking in. AW and I have become some what regulars of this establishment and we can't get enough! The staff is beyond helpful and friendly, and the food there is just as incredible as their selection in over 100 beers! The owner will go out of her way to create something for you to like, while the waitresses will offer their newest beers and their all time favorites. The beer varies in price, but there's a beer for every price range. Folk-style music fills the place weekly (check their website for performances). Plenty or parking outside the bar. Wear your smile, bring your CASH, and prepare to escape from Miami.

Robin M.

Yelp
If you like places that support local original music with great beer and wine selections then this is the place! Very cool vibe and staff friendly. Didn't get a chance to eat, but the food smelled and looked delicious. A BIG plus I was able to bring my twins who are only 13 on a Friday night. It was great to expose them to original music! Very important to remember....cash only establishment, so be prepared.

John C.

Yelp
This place is one the best kept secrets in all of Miami. Awesome food, killer beer selection, outragious live music! A must-try!

Chris G.

Yelp
I been coming here off and on since they been open. This place is a gem in North Miami! Every time I come her I feel welcomed by the owner and staff. I usually come her with one of my best friend who plays here from time to time. It has a little stage for live performances by local musicians and some national acts too. They play a lot of folk and acoustic tunes here. I always enjoy the live music they play here. The great thing about Luna Star other than the music is their beer menu! They have beers from all over the world. If you travel to some country and had a wonderful beer while traveling they probably have it here. You won't find Bud, Coors or any of the mainstream brews that everyone sell and for good reason! Like it says on the menu they want to broaden you mind a little when it comes to beer! From Lagers to Pilsner they have it all! And the put it in its proper glass too. This place is a must try for beers lovers!

Gary L.

Yelp
Great local music, great intimate ambiance, nice patrons and even nicer staff. Alexis is the owner and is very gracious and cooks tasty food. Try her crab cakes!

Senor M.

Yelp
Have you ever walked into a room and the record needle scrapes (or mp3 player) and everyone looks at you? That's what happened here. It was a weird folk music night... and it was really weird. They always charge a cover, which is fine for live music ... but it wasn't our scene. I feel like this was just not the place for us, but it was lively and well attended by the people it was geared towards.

Michael S.

Yelp
Go here, don't miss it! Great food, great beer, great music! Belgian beers are amazing and a must have antelope sausage! The music/poetry reading/open mike is Tuesday through Saturday.

Casey F.

Yelp
I went to Luna Star Cafe last night. I had a wonderful time, amazing energy, live music- what else could I ask for? If you show up with a C-note, be prepared to drink! Great selection of beer both domestic and abroad. What I like about the "huge" beer menu, it educates you-all about the different beers and how their made. Overall, I had a great time! Cash only btw...food available as well.

Shelly S.

Yelp
The Luna Star is an experience. It's one of those great corner pubs that you don't see much any more. If you like atmosphere, art, music and history you will feel the vibe. Alexis, the owner is a great gal and the staff makes you feel at home. This bar supports musicians, especially singer songwriters. They try to get a cover charge for the musicians, but if you purchase food and drinks, you don't have to pay the cover which I think is fair. You never know who you will see perform there. it's a lot like the Bluebird and the Stage in Nashville. The decor and atmosphere alone make it worthwhile. If you enjoy live music and a beer without the televisions all over the place, you will like this unique lneighborhood pub.

David D.

Yelp
If you are into a low-key place that has a great selection of beers, this place is for you. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but when you walk in, the place has a great vibe, very cool ceiling that resembles a log cabin. Their food is also excellent. They have plenty of appetizers and entrees at reasonable prices. I had the brescetta. The fresh tomatoes on top of the warm, crispy pieces of bread were delicious. And if you are into beer, they have over 100 selections. They also have live music throughout the week. But make sure you bring cash because plastic is not accepted. All in all, a nice place to chill with a meal, coffee or a brew.

Brittney W.

Yelp
I really wanted to give this pace four stars. But as one reviewer already mentioned, the "regulars" are totally obnoxious and made my experience hell. I came here to hear my friend sing for "Open Mic Nite." The cafe is conveniently located exactly across the street from MOCA. It houses the artsy fartsy kids by day and seems to house the loud, drunk, overbearing crowd by night. There were some good and not so good talents before my friend's performance consisting of poetry and music. During most of the acts, the regulars made no effort to whisper, making so much noise, snapping facebook profile pictures and just being totally inconsiderate. After about 10 acts, it was my friend's turn to go up. You know how at every bar there's "that girl?" the ring leader of her group? Usually loud and overweight? Well, while my friend was tuning up her guitar, "that girl" decides to put on her own heckling show. Ugh, I'm getting mad just thinking about it. Finally my friend starts her set and she is awesome. She did a spectacular job, so wonderful I decided to record it on my camera. While I was filming, one of the ladies from "that girl's" crew gets up from the bar, walks over to the stage, stands in front of me (my camera) and the other people around and behind me and starts dancing to the beat of my friend's song. Wtf. Another person had to see how pissed I looked and asked her to stop blocking me. On top of that, throughout every act people were getting up, walking in and out and shit. The entire night, I was just over it all. So, did I like Luna? Yes, I did. The staff and the bartender were so chill and nice. Also, there is a vast and very descriptive beer selection that impressed the hell out of me. But will I be back? Probably not anytime soon. Perhaps if they were to enforce the no talking/no interruption rule during the performances, it'd be a lot better. p.s. ditto to the CASH ONLY thing.

Jay K.

Yelp
If you're into beer, they have a menu with more than a hundred kinds to choose from. Other than beer, the menu is light, but they have some sandwiches, fries, etc. and coffee and sodas. Live music many nights -- the night I went it was a group of Irish men and women casually playing together. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the folks who serve you are pretty friendly. The food is surprisingly not-so-bad at all.

Marjorie D.

Yelp
Very nice staff. Nice location and decor in this place. They have a stage for small live bands. Great ambience. Only cash accepted so be sure to bring plenty of cash. Good good and music. Great place to just come and enjoy without the loudness of a club.

Bil R.

Yelp
I really like this place. I wish they were open in the day. (If they are, I've had bad luck catching them. Usually the sign says they are open, but they are all locked up.) Great place to meet up with friends, kick back, and catch some live music.

ivel g.

Yelp
really nice/sassy/knowledgeable staff. beautiful decor. obnoxious regulars. many many beers, i dont like beer, but i had to try one (i still dont like beer) but the place was awesome. great vibe, really accepting and genuine. *!

Ira L.

Yelp
This is a great spot for musicians to play and for their fans to see them. The food is really good and the pizza is exquisite. They have over 100 beers and are very knowledgeable about them. The owner is wonderful!

Norval H.

Yelp
Came across this place during a recent trip to Miami. Found Luna Star Cafe to be a super friendly atmosphere! Alexis, the owner, bartender, and patrons made me feel at home. They also delivered on high-quality, super-tasty beers. Tried some really good local beers as well as my first Kenyan beer. I'm a beer aficionado and was very pleased by their comprehensive selection. Highly recommend this place, as a northern California guy, I felt right at home. Great live music, wonderful people, and superb beer!! You guys keep doing what you're doing, cuz it works fantastically!

Vassilis J.

Yelp
Great locals here. Very welcoming and some quality musicians played the night we went. You can tell Cafe Luna has a solid community behind it. Beer list is varied and very good but can be on the pricey side. Unfortunately my spaghetti bolognese was cooked with angle hair pasta and barely had any meat. Classic American bar with a small stage serving quality beers in Miami.

Alan K.

Yelp
Miami's hidden gem. Amazingly great food, large beer selection, great performers and the warmest most attentive staff and owner in Florida. If you want to get away from the rip off prices for mediocre performers in and around South Beach, I suggest you plug in this address on your GPS and have a wonderful evening.

Ariel O.

Yelp
Funky little place, maybe we went sure info off house but we were the only people there besides the regulars that came later to jam out. It seemed like more of a personal jam session rather than a cool bar that plays music. Again I'm not sure if it would have been different had we gone on a different day/time. Definitely unique/interesting and a nice change from the stuffy south Florida chains.

Steven S.

Yelp
A real throwback and a wonderful throwback it is! A real live 60s style storefront coffeehouse complete with gourmet beer and an extensive food menu. Friendly community feeling and enjoyable music to boot. Didn't eat the food, but items on the menu sound like they had to be freshly made. No plastic accepted so bring cash. Plastic is most ungroovy man.

Scarlet D.

Yelp
A wonderful little place filled with music, high-quality food and exotic beers! Brimming with character and quirkiness, this is truly a "local's joint". Become a regular.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Great and unique food and drink selection. Although, a steep cover charge is often required for mediocre bands. We would visit much more often if we didn't have to pay a $5 per person cover charge. The bands don't do much for us, but we like the ambiance, food, and drinks.
