Luncheonette - Review - Bayside - Portland, ME - The Infatuation

"Luncheonette is a daytime cafe that serves as a needed respite from the busier shops on Congress Street at the bottom of Munjoy Hill. It works both as a takeout spot for a quick grab-and-go cabbage caesar lunch, and somewhere to linger on a patio while eating a roast pork sandwich with an antipasti relish that tastes like all the best parts of a charcuterie board. Find a table under an umbrella while you sip wine or kombucha on tap, alongside specials like a tuna bibimbap or a matcha buckwheat financier, to feel a little extra special in the middle of the day." - Alana Dao

It honestly pains me to give Luncheonette 3 stars. I was so excited for a casual lunch spot in this part of town. The food is delicious, and the ambiance, especially the outdoor patio, is great. But the portion-to-price ratio is pretty disappointing. We went with a friend and spent over $100 for the three of us: three sandwiches (one vegan), three “salads,” three coffees, and one shareable dessert. The pork sandwiches were tasty, but small for the price. And the salads… ouch. The portions were embarrassing. All three came out on one small plate, and each was maybe two bites max. They were $8 each… Maybe they are still figuring things out since they just opened, but it wasn’t a great first impression. To be fair, there were some real highlights. Service was excellent, the desserts (especially the cinnamon roll) were divine, and the unlimited coffee was great. Would we go back? Yes, for dessert and coffee. But not for lunch.

Charming spot with warm hospitality and really tasty, thoughtfully made savory food + baked goods! Wonderful vegan options that are clearly labeled! Go check out what Angela and Alex are up to- you’ll be delighted!

Loved this spot!!!! Food was great and the owners who also make all the food and serve were incredibly kind, personable, and clearly passionate about their business. Went for lunch, and my table had a bunch of the salads, salmon rillettes, amazing blueberry pie, great tomato pie, and a perfect cinnamon roll. Everything was fresh, tasty, and thoughtfully made. Highly recommend!

The luncheonette is our favorite neighborhood haunt. The flavors of their dishes are layered and interesting. Cinnamon rolls are a must. We love sitting on the fenced-in back patio where our toddler can stay busy while we eat. The owners and staff are really pleasant and hospitable. Thanks, Luncheonette!

Lunchonette is a welcome addition to the neighborhood! It's the perfect place for side salads, baked goods, and other "lunch" fare. Have tried 5 different salads and the roast beef sandwich, excited to try some baked goods. This is perfect for healthy home-made options.

The coolest couple runs this spot. I tried the cabbage caesar, the farro and the potato salad. All winners - filling and full of texture and flavor. I also got a grapefruit kombucha on tap. Sat on the patio to enjoy the sunny weather, would 100% come again!

The flavors! This is some of the most delicious food in Portland, all clearly made with care and creativity. The roast pork sandwich was delicious, and paired nice with the fresh wax bean and pepper salad. The summer tomato pie was amazing - I wish I could have this every week. But seasons come and go, and I'm going be back here for whatever they come up with!

Alex and Angela have created a Portland gem with their thoughtful take on luncheon and early dinner. Every dish shows off fine-dining precision in a casual setting: a tahini-based cabbage Caesar topped with toasted and puffed rye berries, a sourdough milk bread cinnamon roll with crème fraîche icing, a buckwheat matcha cake as rich and doughy as a financier, and a seasonal tomato pie with a perfectly buttery crust held together by ricotta. The creativity here rivals world-class kitchens like Lazy Bear - yet it feels warm, accessible, and deeply satisfying. I would happily eat every meal here for the rest of my life.

Yelp
What a great new spot! Luncheonette expresses such homey vibes with whole foods that make you feel the best type of full. I sampled a few different menu items: apple cider farro salad, miso butter mushroom salad, the roasted pork sandwich, and the brown rice bowl. All were absolutely phenomenal. They have a great salad deal that allows you to try their large selection. However if you like miso you must at least try their miso butter mushroom salad. It's full of unique mushrooms and fresh seaweed. ALSO make it a priority to try their brown rice bowl; full of pickled veggies, egg and the tastiest tuna fish salad (big chunks of tuna). Bonus if you grab their iced tea it's so refreshing and has a lovely aromatic flavor. The owners, Angela and Alex (as well as other staff members) are so great and helpful when it comes to explaining the menu and offering suggestions.

Yelp
Cute little spot and friendly staff. The food was... okay and the price points weren't ideal for the portion size, but I understand they're a new spot and they need to work out some kinks. First off, ordered the tofu sandwich as the only other option was pork and it's not my favorite meat. Because the sandwiches are pre-made and refrigerated and left exposed/not fully wrapped, the bread was dry, and because the tofu is katsu the tofu was also a bit dry and didn't have much flavor. The only other topping was coleslaw but it did not supply the sandwich with enough "wetness" to un-dry the sandwich as a whole. Also, it was $14 and fairly small so the sandwich was gone in a few bites. I was unimpressed with the sandwich overall, and considering there's currently only 2 sandwich options the lunch menu is quite limited. The pork sandwich, however, looked larger and more full of toppings so I feel a bit conned with this tofu sammie. Second, the best part, the side salads were delicious! Ordered the potato salad and another side and both were so delicious and tasted fresh! However, again, the portion size for $8 a side was small. I'm not expecting a full container, but each side was 3, maybe 4 bites max. I've heard their desserts and pastries are tasty so I look forward to returning and trying something else, but because they're new I hesitate to give them a 3-star review until I've gone at least once more.

Yelp
You won't be disappointed by the cinnamon roll, absolutely worth the stop. The shop is small, charming, and the service was genuinely great. A cozy little gem

Yelp
I stumbled across The Luncheonette by chance on my way to Bhan Appetite, and what a discovery it turned out to be. The pork sandwich with potato salad was nothing short of exceptional--beautifully balanced, thoughtfully prepared, and bursting with flavor. There's a quiet confidence in the way everything is presented: simple, unfussy, yet elevated in taste and execution. You can feel the pride and intention behind every detail. Though the space is small, it radiates charm and delivers an experience that far exceeds expectations. A true hidden gem--perfect for a memorable lunch or a take-home indulgence.

Yelp
I'm so glad I found this new spot before it gets super busy, because it will. The inside is very quaint and the back patio is spacious. The food was excellent...the best cinnamon roll I've ever had and the rice bowl was bursting with flavor. I got a chance to speak with the owners. This is their passion project and it shows. Well done.

Yelp
I went here with my wife and daughter for "brunch" and we are glad we did. The cinnamon roll was delicious but not sickeningly sweet, and the red bean bar (which is a delicious sort of breakfast bar / dessert) is possibly the best gluten-free baked treat I have had. The coffee is from local roaster speckled ax and it is delicious. The service was outstanding, the ambience was light and cheery, and the owners were very nice and let us sample something they were looking to perfect before adding to the menu. I would love to come back to sample the lunch menu .

Yelp
What a fabulous new hip restaurant! Interesting and delicious food, fun seating (patio is ADORABLE), super friendly staff, lovely owners/chefs, great prices.....I'll be back!!
