"The bakers would line tangerine-orange plastic trays with jiggly egg custard tarts, fluffy mini cakes, and bouncy sesame dessert balls each morning and throughout the day. But Lung Moon Bakery was never busier or more in demand than when the Mid-Autumn Festival rolled around. Longtime residents of Chinatown and Asian Americans all over the city would beeline to the tiny storefront for expertly made mooncakes to celebrate the annual tradition. Like many others, pastry chef Jansen Chan made it a point to make one more visit when the longstanding old-school bakery announced it would close permanently shortly after last year’s festival in October. Chan says he spoke to the owner during one of the bakery’s last day in business, and they struck a deal: Chan would buy the mooncake molds, used to turn out the popular delicacies filled with everything from white lotus seeds to salted duck eggs to red bean paste. The mooncakes and other desserts stood out here because of the 53-year-old bakery’s personal touches. Handwritten signs on Post-It notes would sometimes point customers to specials — lucky visitors might get an extra pastry thrown in. “You let us know that our foods really touched your hearts,” said a closing note back in October. The feeling was mutual." - Eater Staff

"Bakeries dot Chinatown like ornaments on a Christmas tree, but Lung Moon’s soft cake rolls, golden egg tarts, round sesame bun fritters, and dense mooncakes (in several flavors) stand out. Go around lunchtime for the best selection, which includes savory, meat-filled buns. Definitely try an egg tart and the coconut bun, which is lightly sweet, buttery, and full of coconut flavor." - Daniela Galarza

I love this place. The egg tarts are amazing and only $1 each. If you like coconut, get the coconut tart too. Traffic is heavy so everything is super fresh. Also, the ladies that work there are very friendly. Get the HK milk tea to go with your egg tart

When I think of Chinatown in New York and the food that they offer, the word that come to my head is “affordable.” This is not just the restaurant or grocery stores, but also includes bakeries. We ventured out to a local bakery in Chinatown, looking for some baked goods and pastries. The inside is really small, maybe enough to hold about five to seven people? Any more than that, you can’t really move around much. Much of the space is taken up by the window showcases and kitchen. They do have varieties of baked goods, from cookies, pies, puddings, cakes, all sorts of breads, and of course, traditional Chinese sweets. And affordable? You betcha! Most of the items are around $1 each! They are not set up as a cafe, so if you want to eat something right away, you need to eat it while you are standing up. It is nice to find a bakery that is popular among the locals, with super affordable prices. I like the fact that they have traditional Chinese items, but also, other baked goods that are not too exotic to the rest of us. Read my full review of this bakery and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

Very nice place, cheap and quite delicious bakery It’s small grab-n-go with little better than normal “Chinatown style” customer service. They also have a drink selection (coffee, tea, and bottled teas, juices and sodas). I had sesame ball ($1.25) with some red bean paste inside it was good, but too oily for my taste. I also had black sesame bun ($1.00) which was ok (a little dry) and delicious coffee roll (about $1.00) for which I would definitely come back and try other variations of roll cakes. I would say the bakery definitely worth to check it out.

9.14.19 - one of the best places to get baked goods in Chinatown NYC. The moon cakes, especially the black bean, is dope. Fluffy, not too sugary, and fresh! You can't go wrong here.

The sesame ball w red bean filling was ok but the egg custard was soooo amazing and thick! Not like those skimpy ones! I'm not sure if they keep them warm but mine was still steaming!

Definitely the best and cheapest Chinatown Bakery in New York. Where else do you get such fluffy cakes for a dollar?

Cash only. Very very reasonable prices, decent pastries all round. Sticky rice was good, as well as the pork pie pastry. Recommend getting egg tarts elsewhere

I came here because of the raving reviews but I have had better and it was just ok. The staff was not friendly. The price was not really clear but it’s cheap for sure. I wish they had more clear price tag and explanation for the products.
