"After news started spreading on social media that the landlord of the longtime home of Lyndell’s Bakery had filed for a demolition permit, fans of the classic Ball Square bakery feared it would be closing. Lyndell’s took to Facebook to clarify the situation, stating that it is 'not closing and not for sale.' The landlord will redevelop the property, and Lyndell’s will have a brand new space in the forthcoming mixed-use building. During construction, the bakery plans to temporarily relocate and continue operation without interruptions." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

Ordered a birthday cake day before and they did a beautiful job! Cake was fresh and delicious, not to mention looked great! Also tried some of their donuts and LOVED their chocolate cake donut! Great place!

I’ve been meaning to stop by Lyndell’s after a friend of mine recommended I come here! I walked in and there was such a variety of baked goods to look and choose from. Staff were very welcoming and didn’t rush any customers to order. I got a raspberry pastry and 2 half moon cakes; one vanilla and one chocolate. They had a deal that day where it was BOGO free for the half moon cakes! Total came out to $6.75. The raspberry pastry was delicious! Soft, fluffy bread with some cinnamon with the tangy, sweetness from the raspberry jam and icing. Half moon cakes- both cakes were pretty good, not dry and not too sweet which was good because the icing on top of them were pretty sweet. It’s a considerable amount of frosting, so be warned if you cannot handle too much much sugar! All and all, I’d love to try more goodies from Lyndell’s! ^^

I ordered a wedding cake from Lyndell's, and I am so glad I did! I always loved their black & white cookies, and when I was thinking of where I could get a small, simple wedding cake that tasted delicious, they immediately came to mind. I called and easily ordered the cake over the phone in a few minute - you would probably need to go in person if you were ordering a more complicated and larger cake, but the person on the phone easily helped me get my simple request squared away. I had cake toppers that I was really looking forward to using, and the cake matched them absolutely perfectly. We served other desserts for our guests, so this cake was just for us, and it was absolutely delicious!! I'd recommend anyone in the Boston area to get their wedding cake from Lyndell's - thank you again!

Google
Wow -- we got a birthday cake for my daughter from Lyndell's and it was truly delicious. The vanilla cake was thick and moist, and the chocolate icing was rich and decadent. The cake looked beautiful, and the team was professional and easy to work with for our order. We'll definitely be back for future birthdays and other special events!

This establishment has been around for over a century. They've been serving Incredibly delicious and mouth watering goodies since 1887. Their cakes are dense and their canolis are flaky. Definitely worth trying out if you're in the area.

Google
Cake I got yesterday for my girlfriend birthday was pure icing. Zero taste, pure sugar. I literally felt embarrassed after we started eating it. It’s unbelievable that bakery sells generic cakes that you can buy in supermarkets.

Joel Griffith

Google
The single best donut in the greater Boston area. I’ve been trying every donut I can find and as a cake donut lover, this is the best. Perfectly dense, crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. The icing pairs perfectly with a not too sweet batter. The price for quality is incredible. They are famous as they should be for their cakes and half moons but please do not sleep on how amazing their donuts are.

Google
This place is FANTASTIC. Highly recommend the danishes and the moons. For those who aren’t familiar with what a moon is, it’s like a flat cupcake, with an incredible 50/50 split of cake to frosting. Be warned, nothing in the glass cases is labeled but the staff is very knowledgeable and will happily help. Prices are cheap especially considering the quality. For absolutely delicious pastries definitely come here!

Yelp
I sometimes have to go out of my way NOT to drive by because the jelly donuts are the best IN THE WORLD and I can't stop myself. Also, I wait all year for their Gingerbread People during the holidays. No one makes a CRISP gingerbread cookie like this. We ordered a (pricy) Anniversary Cake. It was magnificent, and the whole party couldn't even eat the whole thing. When I was jonesing for gingerbread, they even advised me of a place called The Gingerbread Factory in Winchester. The staff is unerringly the friendliest. They CARE about your sweet tooth and offer no advice on health or weight, thank goodness.

Yelp
It's so refreshing going to an old school bakery! I only got the Half Moon Cookies (Black & White cookies) and they were out of this world! The cake was so moist and the icing was thick. The black part of the icing tasted like brownie batter, SO GOOD! The service is a bit slow but this place feels like stepping back in time!

Yelp
The folks at Lyndell's were super friendly and easy to work with. Everyone loved the adorable cake they made for my son's first birthday!

Kae J.

Yelp
Nice old school bakery. I was craving a discontinued apple-filled Mrs Baird's cinnamon roll from my childhood.(If you know, you know.) I was devising plans to recreate it, but then ran into this place. Their apple danish filled the bill. It was heavenly! I went back and got another one. My daughter got a lemon bar that was good. The service was fast and professional. I overheard someone ordering a cake and the cake decorator seemed very patient to me. The inside is clean and has a large display. Worth the stop in my opinion.

Ariel E.

Yelp
Ordered a huge sheet cake with extra flowers. Got exactly that. It was a hit! Will definitely use again.

Amanda W.

Yelp
Got a delicious chocolate cake from there a few days ago right at closing! The employees were so nice and didn't try to rush me at all, and described each of the cakes when I inquired about them

Pescataria N.

Yelp
Love this place. We got our wedding cake here. I asked for a golf themed birthday cake and my mind was blown. Thanks, Lindell's!!!

Bridgeen M.

Yelp
Excellent service. Beautiful cakes. Very professional decoration. Delicious buttercream frosting.

Yelp
Came to Lyndells to get treats for a family holiday gathering and just wow - they really delivered with charm, high quality and variety! I'll note: not much for vegan, gluten free but otherwise a splendid display of diversity mostly Italian inspired. We tried two different loaf cakes to get in a blond and chocolate, both were ranked as one of the best cakes my family has had. Cannolis were the next round of treats and ranked high with a good crisp and flavor variation. A favorite was the almond biscotti, giving a true tough bite and delicate flavor. Definitely recommend stopping here to get treat for your next gathering - grateful and inspired.

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Old-school bakery as someone else stated. Bought a vanilla frosted cake for Easter, nothing special. The blueberry pie was very good and priced right. Give it 4 stars because it was very crowded and confusing.

Sean L.

Yelp
A Charming Bakery with a Touch of History Walking into this bakery, you can immediately feel the authentic warmth and history of their baked goods in the air. The Boston cream donuts are a particular favorite--impossible to stop eating or share after just one bite. The cakes are equally delightful, with just the right amount of frosting and a cake base that is delicious even on its own. For those of you with an engineering mind, be sure to ask for a box to go so you can witness the magic of their archaic string tying box machine in action. This bakery is a true gem, offering a nostalgic and satisfying experience with every visit. Highly recommended for anyone in the area!

Anisha B.

Yelp
Lyndell's is a charming little bakery. They had run out of half moons by the time I got there, so instead I bought a chocolate full moon/moon cake? I also got a vanilla one for free since they were having a sale. Even without the sale, the prices are good, the frosting is rich, and the cake is fluffy. What more could a sugar addict ask for?

Brian D.

Yelp
Awesome cake for my ladies 30th birthday. Looked amazing. They Did an awesome job. Gained a couple LBs though.

Kimberly A.

Yelp
A trip to this bakery is always a treat. They offer a great assortment of cakes, cookies, turnovers, muffins, freshly baked breads and so much more. It's always hard to decide what I want to buy when I come here since there is such a wide variety of baked goods to pick from but mostly I go with their half moon cookies with half white and half chocolate frosting topping the cookie. Their baked goods are always pretty good sized and are very fresh tasting. I have always been satisfied with everything I've bought here. The counter help is friendly and very helpful. The prices are reasonable. If you ever get the chance to come here you should definitely go for it.

Yelp
I have been going to Lyndells for pretty much my whole life for family birthdays and holidays, but just ordered my first custom cake. It was a great experience from start to finish and the cake turned out absolutely gorgeous! Karen was lovely to work with and the cake was as delicious as it was beautiful!

Yelp
I've been meaning to write Lyndell's a review for a few years now, but honestly this bakery is amazing, and I'm not just talking about the baked goods, I'm talking about the service. THE BAKED GOODS: Overall yummy. I've had no complaints about what they serve here. Lyndell's isn't about showstoppers and frills, it's your classic bakery with quality stuff. Honestly, I think the star of the show is their classic chocolate frosted donut. The chocolate frosting is more like hot fudge. It made me hate all other donut shops. I'm serious, that donut is perfection. THE SERVICE: This is where Lyndell's succeeds. They have saved me time and time again with birthdays, last minute requests, and just a super friendly staff. This is my story from a few years ago: I threw a birthday party for a friend. I requested a cake, a solid day before, to be picked up on Sunday. They close early on Sundays, I knew this. I, like an idiot, forgot. I forget how I exactly got into contact with someone who knew someone that worked there (I'm resourceful and was desperate at the time) but they brought the cake over to the wine store across the street for me to pick up. EPIC! That place really values its community.

Jill D.

Yelp
Love their half moons. Have been going there since I was young. My family always got cakes there for special events such as First Communions and such. Love when I can get in there and get some of my favorite treats.

Norm J.

Yelp
There is not a single thing here that i don't like so far, and the prices are comparatively great to boot! First of all, I'm a layer cake lover, so I tried the red velvet slice and it is SOLID gold. The frosting is incredibly fluffy and exactly the right level of sweet and smooth (with the cream cheese tang, but not overwhelmingly so), and the sponge is excellent. And when I say 'layer cake lover' - I really mean it, as I have now gotten a whole vanilla cake to slice and portion out for myself/my weekly treats 3 times . It is SO FINE-CRUMBED AND SOFT (seriously), and the generous frosting is amazing. My only regret is that it's so perfect that I haven't tried any other flavors, despite them looking great. I'm also a HUGE fan of the raspberry and date crumble bars. If you like buttery crumbly things in general, you can't miss 'em. The Italian cookies have a lovely almond flavor as well, and the half moon cake/cookie thingies are AMAZING. Kinda like cakey brownies with frosting, I guess. And do NOT miss the mochas! The fluffy, creamy, coffee-ish topping (and fudge) on these is absolutely to die for. Banana bread is not bad, either, but be warned that they use raisins in it (I like that just fine, but it was new to me).

Eugene P.

Yelp
Was really hoping this was the same bakery it used to be. Extremely dissatisfied. Honeycomb bread not even close. Danish pastry just globs of dough, no layers, not danish dough. Plain donut just ok Bismark donut was not on a traditional donut and had gooey red jell not raspberry. Website touts "traditional recipes". Will not return

Sasi M.

Yelp
Amazing cake and pastries. I've become a huge fan - especially the cupcakes and cream puffs. The cupcakes aren't overly sweet, and both taste and feel really good. The cream puffs are so light and fresh. They're my new favorite pastry. Their coffee is ok and cookies are decent. I'm hoping to return soon to try out some of their other items soon.

Brent M.

Yelp
I think I've finally found it - the best Boston cream donut in the Boston area. It's not overly large and gimmicky, the dough is perfect and the chocolate glaze is excellent. It's so simply but so well done. Don't know how it took me so long to find this place but I can't stop going back

Holly W.

Yelp
Great cakes and large selections of pastry breads and more! Have visited for many years !

Maryellen C.

Yelp
The Absolute Best Bakery! Cakes are so delicious and the designs are works of art, so Beautiful! Customer service is impeccable and outstanding! Karen, Thank You so much for the most incredible Graduation Cakes for our sons! We are so grateful.. Maryellen

Yelp
I love to support local business, especially one that's been around as long as Lyndell's, but the items just weren't that good. We tried a variety of sweets but nothing really hit the spot and would be something I'd return for. The half moon was just a heavily frosted cake (very heavily frosted) and was on the drier side. The key lime cup was good but there was so much graham cracker crust it dried out my mouth and spilled everywhere (also the portion given for $5 was disappointing). The almond cannoli was not up to par for a Boston area bakery. Lastly, the apple turnover was good but had way too much crust compared to apple filling. It tasted too similar to a grocery store tart to make the special trip to Lyndell's for just that item. It's also frustrating that there's no external menu of items being offered since they're only allowing 5 people inside at a time. By the time we were allowed into the store we needed time to decide and that just makes the wait times outside even longer - not a great position to be in on a hot Summer day.

Chris S.

Yelp
Delicious!! Will be back very soon! Just another gem in the area for anyone looking for an owner operator business!

Cheryl S.

Yelp
I have been getting cake' s and other baked items for over 30 years. I'll be looking for another bakery for our family events. If you do not like an over abundance of frosting order birthday cakes with " light frosting". They over do frosting in cakes and half moons. Quality and size of items have gotten smaller, at the same time, increased prices. Chocolate Drops once had a nice crescent shape chocolate top and bottom, large enough to hold the sweet cream. Not anymore! Now they offer the more expensive item with a much thinner cookie type chocolate top and bottom. No longer a fan, too bad. I will be getting baked goods for family events elsewhere

Cheryl M.

Yelp
Found a hair baked into a cake I got recently. Unsure if maybe it was from a brush they might have used or something but either way it was incredibly disgusting. Couldn't eat it anymore after that.

Grace G.

Yelp
Went there for the first time yesterday. What a wonderful old-school bakery. Squeaky clean, eye catching confectioneries in clear glass cases. The woman who waited on me was friendly and attentive. I shall return.

Logan D.

Yelp
Pros: -I rank this place as having the 3rd best Boston Cream donut in the city (1st: Mike's Donuts, 2nd: Doughboy Donuts). Pretty good for not being a donut-specific place! -Inexpensive ($1.15/donut) Cons: -I almost thought they were out of Boston Cream donuts around 8am on a Saturday but they had them in the back and not in the display case--be sure to ask! EDIT: came back in 2018 and now they're in the case on the left! -- Boston Cream Donut Incredibly fresh--crispy on the outside and soft on the inside--and the filling inside was light and had more depth of flavor than a typical custard filled donut. The star, however, was the chocolate topping. Not sure if intentional, but it tastes exactly like brownie batter--seriously uncanny. The only reason this donut was not #1 in the city was that it was slightly confusing to have a Boston Cream donut taste like a brownie, since the chocolate overpowers the rest of the donut. However, it was an incredibly pleasant confusion. I would recommend! EDIT: came back in 2018 and the chocolate tastes more like standard chocolate these days, the filling is eggier, and the dough is still soft but not crispy. Still very solid! Chocolate Cake Glazed chocolate cake donut. Thick layer of glaze that adds a nice texture. It's a little bit crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Not dry! One of the better chocolate cake donuts in the city.

Charuta B.

Yelp
We ordered cupcakes for a friend's engagement party. The cupcakes were very tasty and soft. But a bit too sweet. The cupcake decoration was very pretty and looked gorgeous! I wish they somehow made it a little less sugary.

Jenni F.

Yelp
Got some danish/ not like they used to be or taste. The Mother's Day chocolate heart cake was dry and stale. The prices have increased and the quality has gone down hill. I guess the donuts are a big seller and I do enjoy the sugar cookies.

Dan O.

Yelp
First heard about on Phantom Gourmet. They said: "best half moons ever." We love half moons, and had to go. We live in Worcester, one hour away, but we go here when we go into Brighton once a month. We have been going thru Harvard Square for years to get to Lyndells, but now looking for alternate routes (HS sucks on a good day). The point: These are the best halfmoons ever! Hate to call it a cookie because this brings up the image of a crunchy cookie like oatmeal or choc chip. These are built on a cake layer and they are moist. Then, of critical importance to me, is the icing to cake ratio. These have a very healthy covering of icing and the cake below, sort of like a cupcake with half the bottom removed, my ideal! You have options: half choc and white on yellow cake, all choc frosting, or all white, or the same options on choc cake bottom, so be prepared. Save some travel and just buy a dozen. Warning, you have to like sugar. We often eat just a slice of the half moon and save the rest for later. (I microwave for a few seconds before devouring). ( An entire cookie at one time might result in coma). They also have excellent eclairs which I will score this Friday. Can't speak for other items, but they look good. Will try Boston Creme donut soon based on reviews.

Efraim S.

Yelp
Very cool and historic but the premade items just were not great. Perhaps they shine with cakes? I got the black and white which was more cakey than a traditional NY one but was good. The almond cookies were crazy hard and not flavorful. I really did not love the bakery but dont want to stop others from trying if you are in the area.

Cathy Z.

Yelp
Lyndell's is totally a nostalgic thing for me. Their cakes bring me back to my elementary school days, when classmates would bring in cupcakes on birthdays and I would hold my breath for a vanilla cupcake with chocolate, peach, or strawberry frosting (the best kinds, in my opinion). More recently I've discovered that their Boston cream pie is the best! The thick layer of rich chocolate frosting and the simple vanilla pudding go so well with the light vanilla cake. This is my ideal birthday cake! They also make a cake with white frosting and a chocolate glaze poured over top that is both attractive and delicious. The black and white cookies are the real deal as well. However, I would stay away from the more exotic flavors. For example, the lemon Bavarian cake was just OK due to the overly fake lemon flavor. Sure, you can find fancier, more impressive cakes out there, but 9 times out of 10, Lyndell's is exactly what you need to please a crowd. It's a Somerville classic for good reason!

Mercy M.

Yelp
I ordered a custom cake from Lyndell's for my partner's birthday. The result was beautiful and scrumptious, and my partner was delighted. The manager, Karen, was helpful and incredibly accommodating to my requests--and between that and the cake, the price they charged was more than reasonable, which is especially appreciated right now. Even in pre-pandemic times I never got a chance to visit Lyndell's as often as I would like, but when I have gone it's consistently been a treat. I have always recommended them to others and now will continue to do so even more emphatically. Thanks!

Tony M.

Yelp
Lyndell's makes deliciously great cakes. I normally like to pick up a small cake that feet's 4 people for $11. It's not crazily sweet like a supermarket cake, and it's moist.

Jenn P.

Yelp
What a nice little treat! I was in the area meeting with a friend at the local cafe down the street and was craving something sweet. Here Lyndell's was waiting for me! The staff was very nice and helpful. It was my first time here and they suggested the moon pie. I was never a fan but figured I would get it to give it a try or to at least let my friends try it. It was buy 1 get one free! Service was 8/10. My favorite cake of all time is carrot cake, so I had to try some from here. It sorta tastes like one I can get from the grocery store I'm not gonna lie. The cream wasn't as fluffy and cake wasn't as moist. It wasn't made with nuts which is disappointing, but I guess with so many nut allergies I can see why. I would give this cake a 6/10. I haven't tried the moon cake or boston creme yet, but I will update this review once I do.

Jen B.

Yelp
Vest black & white cookies. More like pillowy soft enormous muffin tops with old school not-too-sweet simple frosting!

Leah S.

Yelp
I ordered a cake for my dad's 75th birthday and it was wonderful. Gorgeous floral design and the richest chocolate frosting ever. Customer service was friendly and efficient. Thank you, Lyndell's!

Lynda T.

Yelp
we celebrated with the most delicious and divinely decadent Lyndell's cake! freshly moist marble cake with a layer of german chocolate filling, and an additional layer of Boston custard! amazing!! we'll travel here to pick up a cake anytime! try their donuts, too!

Joan G.

Yelp
I was very disappointed in the cookies and mini pastries that I purchased today. I ordered 3 dozen cookies and 2 dozen mini pastries. I placed the order yesterday and asked that the cookies be put on a tray. They told that it would be $10.00 extra. The cookies were $24.00 a lb. I spent over $137.00 today. I will never go back to Lyndells.

Kelly R.

Yelp
Not sure where all the positive reviews are from? The cake was dry, tasteless yet somehow overly sweet (we got the yellow round with coconut on the outside). There was no taste of vanilla, no richness at all, quite frankly it was almost stale! Supermarket cakes have more flavor (and this is not saying a lot). Didn't try any pastries but those looked decent, not a place you want to get your special occasion cake from, incredibly disappointing :(

Vivian C.

Yelp
Oh. My. God. Hands down the BEST bakery in Boston since Finale Desserts closed. I have no idea what the name of most of the items I purchased were called, but they were all delicious-- except the whoopie pie was mediocre. 1) Two plain butter cookies with raspberry jam in between them: Whatever these are called, they were soooooooo amazing!!! I could eat 100 of them straight!!! 2) Oreo cup: My boyfriend is obsessed with Oreos and loved it. Enough said. 3) Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting: One of the best chocolate cakes that I have ever had, and I am not even a chocolate fanatic! 4) Whoopie pie: I really do not know what to say other than that maybe it was not sweet enough? My boyfriend hated the fact that when he took a bite, there was too much crea, and so the cream went everywhere. Service: Spectacular! I also love how honest the salesman was. I was going to buy these Italian cookies, and I asked him if they were any good. He honestly replied that they were not his favorite and made a face that they were not worth buying. Honesty-- love it!

Jessica C.

Yelp
Used to love Lyndell's. Haven't been there in awhile. Got cupcakes recently and the icing was still good but the cake was beyond dry. It used to be moist and delicious. Are they cutting back on eggs/ingredients because of inflation or something?!

Jenny S.

Yelp
WENT TO TOWN w/ a $30 buywithme coupon Michael D. & I had, but nothing really stood out as worth making the trip back here ---half moons (their specialty): like a cupcake in flatten shape, just okay ---apple tart: good w/ a chewy crust ---pumpkin cheesecake: light but not enough pumpkin flavor ---molasses cookie: too brittle for my liking! ---fig bar: interesting jam inside but hard to eat w/ the crispy crust & jam running ---honeycomb loaf of bread BAKED FRESH EACH MORNING & they have a bread slicer in the bakery!: nice when toasted w/ mild sweetness but doesn't make for good sandwiches grab a number at the door if its crowded, the ladies behind the counter are so friendly! NOTE: if you thought we tried a lot.. there is SO MUCH MORE to try in store!

Ann F.

Yelp
I was so excited to order our son's first birthday cake from Lyndell's, but was really let down by customer service. I went to the store a week and a half before we needed the cake, spoke to team member about what we wanted, who was then going to discuss the design with the cake decorator and call me the next day with any follow-up questions. I didn't hear from them for six days, which made it too late to order a custom cake anywhere else, because a weeks notice is required at most bakeries. They can't do the design as requested, and I wasn't allowed to speak with the cake decorator directly to come up with a compromise. Lyndell's you let me down.

Sam A.

Yelp
Great place. They have the best cream brûlée in the area. So if you like cream brûlée you should definitely try it!

Helen L.

Yelp
Oh Lyndell's, a bakery that understands and respects the appropriate cake-to-icing ratio. If you're a frosting FREAK, (like me,) you've found a place to plant that freak flag and wave it among the delicious cakes, half moons and cookies that Lyndell's has to offer. Polite and patient service, a variety of attractive pre-made cakes if you're on your way to an impromptu celebration; what more could you want? Please note: they will pipe sassy messages/vague innuendos on cakes for no added cost. Thanks Lyndell's for being a part of my neighborhood!
