The 38 Best Restaurants in Rome, Italy | Eater

"Routinely named among the best places to drink in Europe, this long-established craft beer pub in Trastevere pours around a dozen draft beers from Italy, the U.S., Belgium, Germany, and the U.K., in addition to a small but well-curated assortment of bottles. The staff is passionate and knowledgeable, and can guide you to the right choice for your palate. It’s worth waiting for the few tables on the street outside, set up during the pandemic, which offer a front row seat to Trastevere’s lively nightlife. Best for: Trastevere people-watching, 365 days a year (it’s even open on holidays)." - Katie Parla

Friday Fives: Katie Parla's Guide To Rome - New York - The Infatuation

"Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fà (Macchè to locals) is Rome's premier craft beer pub. For more than a decade, its taps have been pouring foreign and domestic brews in the heart of Trastevere. Most patrons take their beers outside to the cobblestones, but I'm a big fan of the small but interesting large format bottle selection, often of limited edition beers, which is best enjoyed at the bar." - chris stang

23 Best Bars in Rome

"Don’t let the graffiti-scrawled exterior walls put you off—Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa is all about that lived-in-look charm. Inside, it’s a classic beer-forward pub with big brass taps, a chalkboard menu, chipped wooden bar stools, and a bubbling crowd. The atmosphere’s always buzzy, and the well-placed colorful armchairs and sofas will soften your landing in the rare event it’s too cold to spill onto the pavement outside. Expect a solid mix of Italian, European, and U.S. beers; try the Salty Kiss in summer, or the Brighella when it's cool." - Maresa Manara

Google
Very nice bar with good atmosphere. We tried the tap beer of Spezial Lager - Rauch Bier (smoked beer) and Ritual Lab - Too Nerdy (IPA). Both were amazing. However, we didn't like the draft beer of Cantina Errante with Red Color. It tasted kind of the mix of beer and wine! All in all, we liked here a lot and will come back again.

Google
Best beers we found on tap in Rome. Bar is small with a bit of street art feel with the decor. Music was mix of Rock and downbeat trip hop. Would be 5 stars if the bar staff were more friendly.

Google
Recommended by a fellow American traveler, we found this place really cool with some great beers on tap. We had a couple pours and sat outside and did the requisite people watching as you do in Rome. The server was super friendly and quick even though they were busy. Definitely a great go to beer place when visiting Rome!

Google
Chill craft beer bar in Trastevere with a pretty impressive selection on tap. Somehow the whole neo-punk vibe just wasn’t really my "cup of beer". Nothing wrong with the place.. just not quite my thing. Maybe next time! 🍻

Google
Iconic craft beer bar in Rome´s Trastevere neighborhood. Quality rotating selection of brews, cozy setting both indoors and outdoors. When busy, the place can feel a bit hectic, but that is also part of the charm. No food offered on the premises, but they welcome bringing items from the businesses nearby. Definitely they have something for everyone, and for me on this occasion I was excited to revisit Thomas Hardy´s ale on its 2024 vintage, which was delicious and memorable.

Google
Rome's best beer tasting room for big, bold IPAs. They add several new beers each day, so follow them on Untappd to see what is new.

Christopher Lewis

Google
Weirdest experience ever as a craft beer lover, that goes out his way to find great beer bars across the world. The beer is excellent and the server with the dark beard is a master at beer service. The guy with a top knot clearly doesn’t like non locals in the bar, so was incredibly rude and went out of his way to be weird at every opportunity. Great selection, great beer, great beer service. Made to feel totally uncomfortable by the glass collector. Very odd. We left after one beer as we were made to feel totally unwelcome.

Karim Sheild

Google
Great local drinking spot with a great variety of craft beers from across Europe. Very nice and friendly staff, Chiara was very helpful! Great music and a good mix of local and visitors.

Yelp
Intro: After having dinner in the area, we were looking for a drink. Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa was only a few minutes away by foot, so we made our way. Located in Trastevere, my favorite part of Rome, this casual bar with the long name specializes in beer. Service (3.5/5): They have an extensive beer list. If you want to see it all, take a look at the tablet at the end of the bar. Which is what I did. It took a while for the bartender to help me and they were actually out of the beer I selected. The bartender recommended a similar one which was slightly more expensive but he charged me the price for the beer they didn't have. That was a nice touch. Ambiance (4/5): You can sit outside on the small patio or stand, hang out by the bar inside, or the room in the back of the bar. We initially started out in the back before I went to the bathroom downstairs and discovered that they had a hidden room in the basement. It's not a true speakeasy but it reminded me of one so we sat here for the rest of our time at the bar. We were the only ones down there so it was pretty cool. Food (N/A); We had dinner prior and I don't think they have food anyway. Drinks (5/5): Ma Cha Siete has a lot of rare beers so it was a treat. Belgian beers, sours, saisons . . . the type of beers you don't typically find at a bar. Because of that, some of the beers are quite expensive. We're talking 20 euros or so. But they're typically in large bottles so it's more than one beer and you're paying for quality. It's worth it. They also have more affordable beers if you'd like to avoid the rare stuff. Overall: If you're a beer aficionado, this is the place for you. Make your way down to the hidden room downstairs and enjoy your brews. Cheers!

Yelp
GREAT beers!! Best IPA's I've ever had outside of the US!! We would highly recommend.

Yelp
So put Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa' in google translate and it means, "What did you come to do?" My husband and I's response, "have a cold one!" We came here twice (maybe three times) to drink beer! They have quick service, a great selection of local Italian beers, a nice patio or cool inside pub to sip on your selection. Definitely stop in if you have a free moment while in Rome!

Alex S.

Yelp
Great spot for craft beer in Rome. Great local brewery options and even some cantillion. Bartenders were friendly and we got a nice seat outside. Trastevere is such a fun neighborhood to just sit and have a drink on the street.

Yelp
Mid July Monday night kind pints Was gurning for a proper local draft ipa after hearing about their prowess for many years and This did not disappoint. Very friendly staff at bar - enough seating nearby - a must see for beer lovers

Yelp
SKIP THIS PLACE THAT DOESN'T WANT AMERICANS' BUSINESS. Tiny beer bar that's trying too hard to be what the worst craft beer bars in the US used to be. Snobby bartenders and dorky beer nerd patrons. Plus signs on some tables for locals only. And the locals will enforce it. Even if it means having a woman stand in the rain. Pass this lame spot and don't give your euros to a place that doesn't want your business.

Yelp
I love checking out the craft beer when I'm in Europe. The experience at Ma Che was the best. The beer menu is extensive. They have a lot of options on tap but they have a ton of bottled beer available. We got lucky and came early enough to snag a table before it got too busy. The employees were extremely friendly and it was an amazing place to hang out and enjoy the Italian brews and I had one German beer too. This place is one of my favorite memories from my trip Italy.

Yelp
As a beer aficionada I was very happy to visit this pub in Trastevere. Their taps were very fresh and I loved their wide selection. There was a great mix of locals and tourists.

Yelp
Literally a hole in the wall, but a great place to try obscure craft beers in Trastevere. Blink and you'll miss it. A limited menu but has something to satisfy every beer lover. A small interior but also has spots to sit outside and watch people go by. Bonus - it's directly across the street from Birreria Trilussa!
google avatar

Yelp
The atmosphere here is like no other. Imagine a bunch of locals each holding a pint, laughing and arguing as they overflow from this tiny beer bar, filling up the entire block. The beers: they have craft beer from all over. I saw German, Italian, American. It's written in English on the chalkboard so you can easily know the name, type of beer, and origin. It's like any other craft beer store. My boyfriend had a coffee porter that was delicious, but I'm sure they are always changing what's on draft. The place is so crowded, so most people are drinking outside, which is totally fine. I say if you like beer and want to see a local place, this is perfect!
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
Cool, tiny little beer bar near Travestere. They typically have Cantillon and a range of other beers rare to America on tap. Beers range from €4 to €6 depending on size, ABV and rarity. It's tight and cozy inside like most places in Rome but just off h beaten path enough to serve as a nice, boozy, reprieve.

Yelp
Ma Che was on my "must visit while in Rome" list. And for good reason! As one of the best beer bars in the world (yes, the world!), you can find an incredible selection of rare brews at cheap prices. Between the friendly service and prime bar seat I grabbed pretty quickly, I really could have stayed here sampling beers all night. If there had been more time in our packed schedule, I absolutely would have come back to try even more of their chalkboard list. While here, I was able to try or sample: - Dama Brun-a: LoverBeer (Pass. Way too acidic.) - La Mummia: Birrificio Montegioco - Iris: Cantillon (Finally.) - Geisterzug Gose Rhubarb: Freigeist Bierkultur - For Fan: LoverBeer (SO GOOD!) - Saison de l'Ouvrier Violetta: LoverBeer - Gallagher Stout: Hilltop Brewery The bartender kept randomly sticking sour samples in front of us, which just prompted us to split more bottles! He even gave us the For Fan at a discount. How nice is that?? Clientele here is pretty mellow -- the right vibe you want for a dark and small bar. One girl even shared her outlet with us so we could charge up our phones. A traveler's dream! I'll always remember my visit here, and I hope I can stop back the next time I'm in Rome. Such an amazing spot for beer lovers!

Yelp
Very small bar located in the Trastevere neighborhood with a great selection of beer and reasonable prices. The staff is very helpful and friendly. You will see many locals at this bar as well. The place has character and I will definitely be back the next time I am back in Rome! Beware of the bathrooms--perhaps they have "too much" character.

Yelp
Craft beer in Italy? Hell yeah!! We popped into this place before dinner and found locals drinking beer and having a good time, so we knew we were in the right place. We each grabbed an Italian beer and they were both GREAT! We loved this place.

Yelp
Come have a drink with Rafael in his Pub. They have excellent beer on tap, with a couple of good local brews, and the owner specializes in sourcing beer from small craft breweries in a region in Germany near Bamburg. They also have the sought after, so we're told by the beer geeks, (no disrespect, it's the only descriptive word Rafael and I could find in common) Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus, a great Belgian sour. Talk futbol, he's a huge Lazio fan. I didn't know this, but the pub gets its name from a chant sung by Lazio fans especially when they're pummeling an opponent. It translates to "What did you come here for?" I know I came for one drink and ended up with three.

Yelp
A few years ago Ma Che was basically my second living room. It's a place I've always felt comfortable hanging out and the beer is amongst the best in Rome, if not the best. I still go frequently but the proliferation of new craft beer bars in Rome these days means that Ma Che isn't the only option for the beer connoisseur, as it once was. The bar opened nearly 15 years ago, and in its early days was a pioneer of craft and keg beers, focusing on Belgian and German ales, with a few British and Italian beers. With the rise and rise of the Italian craft beer scene, these days you can also sample a handsome range of home-grown ales here as well, chosen carefully by the experienced owners. There are about 15 taps with regularly changing ales, ranging from Weiss beers to APAs and IPAs, bitters, saison, blondes and stouts (with a handful of rarities in between). You can sample the beers before you buy, and the staff are knowledgeable and friendly. There's a medium sized TV screen in the front bar, showing live sports (including major football tournaments) and music TV. There's an air-conditioned back room as well with an even bigger screen, which becomes particularly popular in World Cup / European Championship years. On warm evenings, there's always a crowd of people outside the bar and the atmosphere is highly congenial. Despite the litres of beer that flow here, matters always remain pleasant - I've seen very little aggression over the years. It's also a great bar for women to drink in, as it's by no means a pick-up joint. Drinkers here are focused on the beer - which is at good as it gets.

Yelp
If you happen to be in Rome and you like craft beers, I suggest this is where you go. People here are awesome and friendly. The bartenders are cool and beers are great. Had a great time when i was here for my Birthday! Thanks fellas, until my next trip to Rome. Cheers!

Yelp
I know, I was visiting Italy, but needed to steer away from wine and get some good beer. This pub was on our "must-try" list, and I'm so glad we came. I will remember this pub forever! Its tiny, definitely more local feel, with only a few bar stools. However, we got some lucky seats at the bar, and started sampling tons of beers. The draft selection was probably the best I've seen in Rome, although not as many choices as some other bars, the quality of rare beers pouring here are better than the quantity of other bars. We tried almost all the draft beers, including a Cantillon Iris, and some nice Italian sours. After the drafts, we starting popping some bottles! There were several options of Loverbeer, all amazing choices that came highly recommended by the bartenders and other patrons of the bar. The bartender was awesome! He let us sample all the sours, had some good laughs, and even gave us special prices for all the bottles we bought :) I love this bar!! So glad we found this little gem. Salute!

Yelp
Good beer in Rome. Go! Tiny space that flows into the street. They allowed me to have a taste before selecting. Good bottle options, as well. Go!

Yelp
Great craft beer pub in Rome. Not in a touristy location, with a lot of locals hanging out. Friendly and helpful service, and the best beer in the area.

Yelp
Without a doubt, this is the best craft beer bar in Rome! I visited Ma Che every night during my recent week long stay in Rome and each time it was fantastic. Ma Che has this very cool "locals/homey" vibe ... a casual and friendly place to hang out and drink outstanding beers. Even though I'm was a tourist, I always felt welcomed at Ma Che. The front bar area is a bit small ... but make sure you go to the back room as it's typically uncrowded with a decent amount of space to spread out a bit. Or better yet, stand outside and drink on the streets of Trastevere like the locals do. The tap list here is world class ... between 15 to 20 beers on draft, mainly Italian selections - which are fantastic, Italy is producing high quality craft beers, do not miss! There's also a very good amount of bottled selections. I was particularly fond of the 750ml and 375ml bottle of Cantillon ... plenty of different Cantillon bottles available at very good prices (10 euro for 375ml & 20 euro for 750ml). Pricing at Ma Che is very reasonable ... you would pay more for the same in larger US cities like NYC, Chicago, LA, etc. Crowd there is a mix ... I'd say 80% locals and 20% tourists. Everyone including the staff is super friendly. Atmosphere is just chill ... not a meat market or a douche hipster hangout. Ma Che is one of the best craft beer bars in the WORLD ... highly recommend - do not miss!!!

Yelp
This place is fabulous! Belgian beer bar in Rome . It's a little small at the bar area but there are rooms in the back with more seating, I'm pretty sure this is just a bar, I didn't see anyone getting food.

Yelp
This was on my "must" list thanks to a trusted beer drinking friend. After dinner and a walk around the beautiful Trastevere neighborhood we decided to stop for a beer on our walk back to our hotel. As we approached we were a little concerned because the outside of the bar was packed with beer drinking customers. When we entered the bar it was pretty empty and we realized everyone grabbed a beer and then went outside to hang out. We were able to quickly get a beer from the friendly staff and found seats easily in the basement. Football was on the televisions, the beer selection was really good including both US craft beers and Italian options. I tried two Italian brews, a Hazelnut Porter by Birrificio Lambrate and a sour farmhouse ale by LoverBeer. Both were very good and things I would not expect to find back in Chicago. The atmosphere, selection, and service definitely solidify this place on the list of best beer bars in the world.
google avatar

Mark W.

Yelp
One of the best beer bars I've been too. My only complaint is that the bottle list wasn't up to date, so I got excited about a bottle that they were unfortunately out of. I did get two other delicious bottles (Cantillon) and they have the basket to pour from. I'm trying to squeeze in another stop before we head home.
google avatar

Yelp
This is an amazing place in the Trastevere neighborhood of Rome. It's in a back alley, but wasn't difficult to find. We tried to go here twice - the 1st time, it was too crowded and people were spilling out in to the alley, so we stopped at another bar instead. The second time, we got there early enough that it wasn't very busy yet, and we sat at one of the high tables in the small back room. The staff is VERY friendly, and of course knowledgeable. They offer free wifi, which is always a plus. They had a great selection of beers - even Green Flash, which made me giggle. I was more excited to try some local Italian craft beers and enjoyed a couple of pretty decent IPA's. Prices were reasonable. They were apparently voted one of the best beer bars in the World, which is pretty amazing! The bathrooms are frightening, but that goes without saying in Italy! It's a small space, so be prepare to stand in a crowd or hang out in the alley.
google avatar

Andy L.

Yelp
Fantastic bar in the Trastavere area of Rome. I went here 3 times when I was in Rome, and each time had a great time. The owner, I think Fabian (or was it Tony?) was very nice! I came to find out his brother lives in Torrance, which is where I grew up! Being an American, you come here for the Cantillon, right? I also happened to be here on Zwanze Day, which was handled smoothly. Their taps are great and showcased a good variety of styles. Would I come here again? I wish I could be here all the freaking time!
google avatar

Tobias A.

Yelp
TL;DR: Chalkboard with ~15 beers on them. All from tab. 4€ for small ones, 6€ for large ones. Smoking outdoors. Music indoors. Toilet in the basement. Well... basically I loved my "Brew Dock" in Dublin. The year I lived there I went to this pub several times a week. Not only for the people (even though they were great) but also for the beer variety. When I moved back to Austria, that was one of the first things I missed. I was on a 4 day Rome vacation with a friend and we stumbled upon this place. And what can I say - perfect. The guys and girls behind the bar were friendly, we had all different kinds of beers to drink and hang out all night. It is a quiet bar, more for drinking & talking than for drinking & partying. But that is what I like... so, go there if you are in Rome.

Yelp
Came here twice for beer while in Rome. They know their stuff and have really good beers. My husband was in heaven with all the options of things that either you can't get in the US or are difficult to find. Lots of locals getting drinks as well. Highly recommended!

Yelp
The guys are so cool and so nice ! They gave me good advices and I was really feeling close to them, as If I was a real roman. They have many artisanal beer references which is really enjoyable. The prices are really cool and the location is the best. i recomend strongly !

Yelp
Best beer bar in Rome, hands down. Not a humongous selection, but plenty of high abv options and enough of each variety to appeal to anyone. Very locally biased which is great to experience what brews Italy has to offer. Small entrance but a clean area in the back as well as space out front to drink on the street. Drinks range about 6 euro per pour, but well worth it. Ma Che is the best in town and a must fro any beer aficionado.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Super cool bar that's definitely worth checking out if you're in Rome and have finished all the classically Roman attractions. Great selection of beers on tap with a cool vibe!
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome place with awesome beer. I was here to watch Champions League soccer, and the place was full of Roma fans having a great time. It has great local craft beer, and very nice, local vibe. It's small, but neat.

Yelp
At some point or another we have all envisioned the perfect place for beer. Some people may envision a posh, large, modern, high-tech beer emporium with a tap list of 100 beers and a bottle list of 2,000 bottles. Would you imagine a hole-in-the-wall with only 10 taps and only a handful of tables? You should. Ma Che is the opposite of what one may envision as the world's best craft beer bar. Does it have 50 taps? No. Does it have 2,000 bottles in the cellar? No. Does it have a $5 million keg cooling unit with variable temperatures? No. Does it have a celebrity chef? No. Does it have rare beer sitting all over the shelves for you to ogle at but can't afford? No. What it does have is character, impeccable service, perfectly poured beers in correct glassware, a lively and personable atmosphere geared towards interacting with strangers. The tap list here is small, but it is well curated. The keg sizes are frequently half kegs, sixtels, and key kegs. This means the keg turnaround is ferociously fast, i.e. the beer is fresh and doesn't sit around. One recurring static tap is frequently Birrificio Italian Tipopils, a world class session beer. The rotating taps include small breweries Ma Che has personal connections with: mostly Italian, but some American, Danish, Norwegian, British as well. Many beers on tap are made exclusively for Ma Che. The bottle list shared with Bir&Fud is extensive covering retired Belgian lambic to discontinued Italian rarities. There are beers here you cannot find anywhere else in the world. Ma Che is really a small, close-knit group of friends.. a hidden gem that people have made their home. This place has personality and a connection. It was my beer embassy in Italy. I made so many new friends and tried many exotic beers, some that I didn't even order! They just kept appearing. Ma Che completed a beer journey of a lifetime and I hope to return as soon as I possibly can. It is to this date, after 650+ craft beer-centric places visited and reviewed, my #1 spot on earth.
google avatar

Steven S.

Yelp
Great beer selection. From Cellarmaker to Cantillon to Loverbeer, these guys know quality beer.
google avatar

Kelly T.

Yelp
When you need your craft beer fix after appreciating a ton of amazing wine, stop in here! Amazing beers, nice bartenders, felt like the hole in the walls we love back home. Had a a couple of TVs in the small bar and more seating and TVs downstairs if needed. Also nice to be able to grab your beer in plastic and enjoy it right outside. Dive heaven.
google avatar

Andrew C.

Yelp
This is my local whenever I'm in Rome. Which is as often as possible. A great selection of craft brews from all over the place, and a friendly and accommodating staff. It can get pretty college-y on weekend nights, but during the afternoon and evening it's a chill, friendly place to drink, read, talk, and watch football. When I die, I DO want to be fermented.
google avatar

Chris F.

Yelp
The name means something along the lines of 'what the hell are you doing here?', which is just awesome. Although I was trying to stick to Italian beers, the ones they had were not my favourite styles so I went for rocket fuel from a Danish brewery called Beer Here. It turned out to be the best beer I had all trip so I certainly didn't regret plumping for such a lovely IPA. This is a beer and calcio bar so I imagine the small space is packed when those football fellows take an afternoon off from their sexual proclivities to kick around the old pigskin. There was sports news on while we were there.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
Absolutely the best beer bar I've visited yet. It's a tiny location with about 10 bar stools inside, but there are so many tap handles that you won't care if your feet hurt after a few beer samples. The selection is ever-changing and the beer is fairly inexpensive, so get a glass and try 'em all. Just take a pic of the beers and post them here so I can always know what's good! There's free wifi and American sports on the TV, for those of you who are visiting. Plus, down the street is a delicious restaurant with the best calzones I've had. They're very generous with their aperitifs as well...

S A.

Yelp
The beer was really good. And it was for a good price! It was our go to bar In trastevere
google avatar

Chief G.

Yelp
It's tiny. But the beer is good and you can always hang out in front. Good selection, 6 euro per beer, football (soccer) on large screens, free wifi :)

Yelp
Terrific atmosphere and compartmented rooms to spread out in, giving a sense of privacy from the main tap room. The music selection was good. Most important for a pub, the beer selection had a mix of styles on draft. Mostly brewed in Italy or Germany with one from Belgium (at the time I visited), there was a porter, pilsner, weisbier, a triple, a saison. I probably missed something, but the point is that there was a good variety. This is a good stop for a few pours and I will visit again when in Roma.

Yelp
Best beer bar in Trastevere/Rome! If your into beer this is the place to go. Many taps, with a craft beer/gastro atmosphere but much better.

Yelp
A bit of a dive but if you're a beer aficionado, this is considered one of the best craft beer pubs around if not the only one. The Ama Brun-A (Lover Beer), brewed in Marentino, Italy (Piedmont region) is especially delicious.

Yelp
The owner and staff are superb. Low key but friendly. Surprised to see beer culture out here, but they do it justice. We had some tasty Italian microbrew, and yes we are Seattle beer snobs. Cheers!

Yelp
MaChe (what we call it for short) has great beer selection that's always rotating week-by-week. Small and cozy place for a high-volume chat with a friend, or for your loud group. The name of the place is an English equivalent to, "What the hell did you come here for?"... so how could I expect star treatment, hah! It's a nice asset to the Trastevere scene and there are always people. Small beer goes for €4, medium €6.

Yelp
This place was super cool! Great beer selection, really cool vibe ! Definitely the coolest bar we went to in Rome! May go back tonight :) Only place we found with ipa's. Their sour beers are delicious too!! I left my jacket there by mistake and they were kind enough to hold it for me until I came back. Love this bar!!

Yelp
This place is fantastic! Best bar that I have ever been here. They have an amazing selection of beers and the ambiance is very intimate. If you want the real roma experience you must stop here! I had the "Lovers Beer", is a red flemish ale and I am now hooked on acidic beers (if I can find them!)

Yelp
If I lived in Rome, specifically Trastevere, I'd be a regular at this bar. My husband and I enjoyed a couple nights here. This place is owned by the same people who own Bir & Fud across the street. Unlike Bir & Fud which serves only Italian craft beer, this place serves craft beers from all over Europe. The bar has maybe six stools inside, with very little standing space. Most people take their glasses and hang out in the street. Reasonably priced, nice bartenders, and a chill crowd. I'd definitely recommend this place to beer fans.

Yelp
If you love craft beer then you must hit this place when in Rome. We had several of the Brewfist as they were our favorite. You could find a number of US style IPAs in bottles like Stone and Sierra Nevada, but staying local is what it was about for us and we were not let down. Service was good and friendly (when is it not in Italy!), location was really cool for just hanging out to have a beer... and recommend walking to the place after seeing some of the sights on the other side of the river, or strolling down the river from the Vatican to here.
