San Diego Restaurants Serving the Best Chinese Food | Eater San Diego

"Tucked away in Sorrento Valley amid busy office buildings, the owners from Mada-Sao on Convoy relocated and took over Mr. Holy Gao’s former location. Keeping some of the specialties like Chef Gao’s tofu and weekend dim sum specialties like soybean milk with fried crullers, the staff have also added mei fun varieties and healthy options like steamed chicken with mixed vegetables. The wok-sauteed a-choy and Taiwanese braised pork over rice are winners too." - Helen I. Hwang

The Best Dishes Eater San Diego Ate in July | Eater San Diego

"I visited a Chinese restaurant in the middle of Sorrento Mesa that does brisk business during weekday lunchtimes but quiets down on weekends, which makes it a great time to try Mada-Sao’s weekend breakfast specials. I sampled soybean milk with fried crullers (youtiao), enjoyed various noodle soups, Taiwanese braised pork over rice, and pan-fried rice cakes (a Shanghainese specialty). To round out the meal, I ordered some wok-sautéed a-choy (a Taiwanese lettuce) and expertly blistered green beans." - Candice Woo

Five New Restaurants To Try Right Now | Eater San Diego

"I noted that Mada-Sao, an extension of Private Kitchen on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, has replaced Liang’s Kitchen on Convoy Street and focuses on Chinese hot pot. It features a self-service display case of individually priced skewers of meat, seafood, vegetables and more that are cooked by the kitchen in a flavorful spicy broth; the menu, displayed on an iPad, also includes dishes such as braised duck, noodle soups and Shanghai smoked fish." - Candice Woo

I had an amazing experience with Ma Dasao. From the moment I arrived, I felt genuinely welcomed and taken care of. The service was warm, professional, and attentive — they truly go above and beyond for their customers. The atmosphere is relaxing, clean, and inviting. You can tell they take pride in what they do because every detail is thoughtful and done with care. I left feeling refreshed, happy, and grateful for the wonderful experience. If you’re looking for a place that treats you with kindness, professionalism, and real hospitality, Ma Dasao is absolutely worth visiting. Highly recommended I’ll definitely be coming back. Sam M.

Plenty of parking and a very spacious restaurant. They offer an all-you-can-eat option for $20 (before tax) for dinner from Monday to Friday, with Saturdays being about $5 more. I believe their weekday lunch deal is even cheaper. You can take as many of the small dishes as you want, and everything we tried was really flavorful and satisfying. What I liked most is that the all-you-can-eat includes items from the regular menu, different kinds of noodles, wontons, rice dishes, and more. We went on a Saturday for lunch, and they were offering more of a Chinese breakfast-style selection, including dim sum and porridge, which was a great touch. Overall, I really enjoyed the food and will definitely be coming back.

Google
This is a so-called lunch go-to place for Qualcomm employees because of its location. We went here for lunch on weekend with friends. All staff were very friendly and accommodating. The dishes are delicious. Good atmosphere and clean. Will come back again!

Great place tucked away off of Mira Mesa. Buffet style with good prices. I’ll be back!

Stopped here to get lunch since the reviews looked good and I must say, the overt and up front racism and complete lack of service was absolutely to die for. I politely waited at the front of the line for almost 20mins, while the server tried her hardest not to make eye contact with me until the line piled up behind me and she had to. Some tried to cut me, I stopped them, then she finally came and tried to serve the person behind me and I asked directly if she didn't want to serve me for some reason...she pretended to take my order and I wasted my break waiting for nothing to come...honestly not that offended just annoyed and hungry 😒

Clean and comfortable place. Food is in good quality. Atmosphere is nice and modern. Services are great. We were 20 minutes earlier before they opened. However, they opened for us.

I wish I could give them a zero but I can’t. I ordered a takeout order and then They forgot a dish in my takeout. I called them when I was on my way going back home, And they want me to drive all the way back there to pick it up and of course I said no, And they told me they’re gonna Zelle me the money, But I never received it:( Oh, and the most important is they do not taste good and does not worth the money!

Great taste and very friendly. A little pricey , but better quality ingredients than most other chinese restaurants. Probably you won’t notice unless you eat chinese all the time hah.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with a coworker recently. I have been to this place over the past 18 years under different names. All I can say is that they have gone more fancy and expensive esp the regular menu. But it seems like the norm for all restaurants in San Diego (the expensive part)...so it is what it is. Light lunch was what I was shooting for so lunch special it is. It came with one soup, one rice, an egg roll, one floret of broccoli (gotta get your veggie!) and whatever dish you prefer from lunch special menu. I ordered shrimp and tofu, hoping that it'd be a good high protein and low-ish calorie option. And I was right. The dish was relatively light. Sauce not over powering. I could decide how much carb I wanted. Definitely a good option when you want to stay relatively healthy in a Chinese restaurant. I guess it'll be my regular dish from now on at ma-sadao!

Yelp
We came here with a group of friends to celebrate Chinese New Year. The food was delicious. Service was very good. It is better if you can speak mandarin. I give it 4 stars because the sitting arrangement was odd. We still had a great time.

Yelp
This place is formerly Mr. Holy Gao and is located in a nondescript strip mall in Sorrento (I think near Gravity Heights). This is my mom's new favorite lunch place and it is native Shanghainese lady approved. The menu, like most Chinese places, is a blend of different regional cuisines but I think the Shanghainese stuff is what they specialize in. The hits: -The spicy braised beef noodles (super ample portion, huge chunks of beef. Noodles could be a little more al dente though) -The yellow croaker (a type of fish) wontons. So delicious and savory and has a great broth. If you love fish (esp. fishier types of fish), get it. We've come back twice for this. The just okays: -The Singaporean chicken rice. Good portion, but the sauce and chicken are kind of bland and underwhelming. - The tiny Shanghainese wontons are just like what we ate in Shanghai (tiny pork wontons with filling the size of your thumbnail in savory clear broth) but they are a bit pricy for the portion. Looking forward to trying more dishes here. There are also some private rooms to host bigger parties, which is pretty nice.

Yelp
I don't usually review but today I had to. I was there for lunch with co workers, food was good, the Kid came twice to refill water, brought me a Dr Pepper, it was good. I asked for the tab and a lady charging the tab came to our table, she was nice. So I paid and the option for tipping came up. I gave the kid $5, the lady then turned vicious, she asked me " did you not like the food" I said yah it was good. Then she said, then pay the full tip amount, when their menu says tip is optional, but I looked at her kinda confused, then she tosses the fortune cookies on table almost knocking over my water cup and walks away! She tells the kid serving us something, gives him my receipt and he comes over. I asked him,"is $5 bucks is not cool" and he said it's fine and thankful, shook his hand and headed out back to work. I've been there 3-4 times and never have we experienced that. But food was good but watch out for that lady, nasty!! 2 stars because of this person, not the way to treat clients.
