"Given Quebec’s longtime love for rotisserie chicken, it’s no surprise that once locals got a taste of a Portuguese restaurateur’s spicy, char-grilled twist it kindled an appreciation that still burns bright. Digging into some flavour-packing piri-piri chicken is a quintessential Montreal experience, and a testament to its multicultural heritage. There is perhaps no better place for it than Ma Poule Mouillée. The quarter- or half-chicken plates — doused in spicy piri-piri and served with a mountain of well-seasoned fries and a token salad — are the standard play at most Portuguese grill spots, but at this joint, opened in 2013, the take on poutine, bulked up with chicken, grilled chouriço, and São Jorge cheese, has achieved icon status. Ask for extra sauce and an orange or passion fruit Sumol — in my humble opinion the two best flavors by far — to wash it down. Know before you go: Queues of hungry locals and tourists that spill out the door are a regular occurrence here, but some well-coordinated counter service ensures the wait isn’t as long as it might look." - Valerie Silva
"A take-out spot famous for its Portuguese roast chicken."
"A bustling Plateau counter-service spot rooted in Montreal’s Portuguese community, famous for charcoal-grilled piri-piri chicken and a poutine riff that layers smoky chicken, chouriço rounds, São Jorge cheese, plenty of gravy, and a proprietary house sauce. The casual counter-service format draws regulars, students, and tourists alike, and sweet Portuguese treats such as pastel de nata are available to-go." - ByValerie Silva

"In existence for close to a decade, Ma Poule Mouillée provides what many regard as the tastiest chicken in town. The star of the show is the restaurant’s fiery piri-piri, which enhances the flavours of the chicken, be it served alone, as a sandwich, or in a poutine. The last of these — a generous helping of fries, São Jorge cheese, sausage, chicken, and gravy — has become a destination-worthy dish." - Valerie Silva
