Mac McGee Review - The Battery - Atlanta - The Infatuation

"It’s hard to miss the bright red brick wall near the back corner of The Battery. And when the easy rock tunes are blasting, the Guinness is flowing, and the garage windows are up, it’s even more of an attention-grabbing scene in the already lively Battery atmosphere. The Irish bar offers all the expected hits like crispy fish and chips, along with a few curve balls (why yes, we’ll have the curry mayo and sweet and spicy fry dips). While the quality of the food won't knock your socks off, Mac Mcgee comes in clutch for the all-day Monday half-priced appetizers and their big local brew collection." - Nina Reeder

The best review I can give is that we will absolutely be back! We're new to the area and had a fish and chips craving. We decided to try Mac McGee and had a great time. The food was delicious (ate before being able to take a pic), the service was perfect on a busy Friday evening and we enjoyed a proper Guinness. The Half & Half is my new drink obsession. Not too loud for conversations but the live music made it a bit harder if you're downstairs. Still, we will be back and I definitely recommend the pub.

We live hanging out at this spot. It's like a neighborhood hole-in-the-wall. The staff is super welcoming when customers walk in the door. Food is tasty. And, the prices are reasonable. It gets crowded early on weekends. There's a band at night. Bring your friends for a good time. I had a burger and fries. Hubby had a Reuben.

Google
My go-to place to hang out and enjoy an adult beverage. Fred & staff remember you and make you feel at home. Drinks are always on point and the food is delicious!

Google
Superb Irish bar in the heart of Roswell. The service was friendly and quite accommodating. We ate upstairs on the balcony which was relaxing and fun. The best fish & chips I've had in Metro Atlanta.

Simply A Great Irish Style Pub with all you would expect... "Always a treat when we visit" Cheers 🍺🍺

Google
Great experience today stopping for lunch. Ordered a reuben with fries and because the sandwich was taking a few minutes, the server brought a side of fries . Enjoyed the sandwich and would reccomend. Good food, nice staff and attentive service.

Google
Really great place. Everything is delicious . We tried the Mac burger , the fish & chips and the smoked salmon on bread. The smoked salmon was very fresh . Hamburgers was delicious!

Google
Food was pretty good, i had the fish & chips. The fries are amazing, huge hand cut ones. They only had 2 people waiting the entire restaurant on a Saturday, which resulted in slow service. I felt bad for the girl serving us. She also was the bartender. It’s a pub, so don’t expect a quiet time.

Yelp
a huge thank you to Fred and Sarah and Zoe for amazing service, great food and hospitality to me and my group of friends for an impromptu toast and food gathering for a dear friend who passed suddenly. he loved this bar too and it will forever hold memories of great music, big smiles to greet us when we enter and food that is amazing!

Yelp
Didn't try the food. Beer selection is ok but server knew nothing about any of the beers, even telling us there were no local beers when in fact there are a few.

Debbie K.

Yelp
The bartender here was phenomenal! I wish we had gotten her name. We stopped by for a drink before our dinner reservations then had to come back after for another round. She was just so kind and welcoming. She recommended the brownie dessert of the day & we were not disappointed. It was incredible and made us wish we had dined here as well and enjoyed their scratch made kitchen. We left before the live music, but the atmosphere brought us right back to Ireland even without the music. Decor is perfect. Background music was a nice volume that still allowed for conversation. Comfortable seating. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and seemed to enjoy being there as much as we did. Thank you for the great experience!

Yelp
Oh my goodness! Elissa has amazing service. Food was piping hot and So so good! Great atmosphere! French fries to die for!!

Yelp
I loved how we were greeted- very friendly! Sat upstairs on the balcony and enjoyed a great view! Wish the bartender/ server was a little nicer though. He seemed so annoyed, that we decided to not eat there and go to Ipp's. The experience of trying new places is what we're always going for- so it was a little disappointing. Décor was so great though...

Yelp
This is a late review...we went for St Patrick's Day 2023. This is one of the funnest Paddy Day's experiences I've had! They had Fabulous food, A young Irish Dance Troupe and bag pipes! What more could you ask for??? Oh yeah... beer! Lots of great beers! I love the intimate seating arrangements and the great Irish Pub atmosphere. It was standing room only but no one cared! Come grab a pint of Smithwicks!

Yelp
We stopped in here for a break after walking around the main street in Roswell. We were in town for a wedding and the wedding party actually ended up here after the reception. Such a fun bar and the wait staff was extremely friendly. We didn't get to try any food unfortunately but maybe next time.

Yelp
No clue why this restaurant has 3.5 stars. I thought the service and food were terrific! They deserve 5 stars. The service was very friendly and attentive and the food was delicious. We had the Irish Dip and Bangers and Mash. I highly recommend eating here.

Yelp
I've had plenty of fish and chips in Ireland and these were very good! Awesome pub with a great atmosphere.

Yelp
Never had a dish I didn't like from here! Scotch eggs, Curry chicken (I forgot what it's called), salads, soups... So good. Lovely bar staff who love to chat but also allow the patrons to talk amongst themselves so it's not over-barring. Has a great roof top chill zone that's open on weekends. It gets very busy! But worth it.

Yelp
It's a no for me. It was my first and last visit. The energy in this place was weird and awkward. The manager was really nice, though. My first three choices for food items and drinks were unavailable because they were out of it. So I pretty much ate what I could rather than enjoying what I wanted. I was hopeful that trying something new would be a good experience. Not! My friends and I ordered vegetarian flatbread and the chicken buffalo flatbread. Neither was tasty. We also ordered Scotch eggs which were meh..but okay, the fries were good but they gave us gravy to dip them in...um, weird and nasty. The gravy was not good. Lastly, we ordered sliders! Yay, finally food with flavor. This was the highlight. I had no desire to order an entree after the appetizer experience. So we drank and left. Drink options weren't plentiful but they got us where we needed to go!

Yelp
I wish I could give 100 stars for service. No kidding. From the moment we stepped in the door until we left. In all my life this was probably in the top 5 in service! We had Jack and K.B. Their recommendations were spot on. Loved the food. Especially the onion soup. Sadly too full for the homemade dessert. Hope to return soon! Thank you for true Irish hospitality.

Yelp
Amazing front door and security staff, Sophie was wonderful. Super speedy drinks. Was super shocked by how efficiently I was able to get in have a good drink and a cheers and get my tab

Yelp
I love a turkey sandwich and the Turkey BLT is AMAZING! I had it for the first time yesterday and it was definitely one of the best sandwiches on Canton street.

Yelp
It's been a while since I've popped in here and it's still a comfortable fun place with good drinks and good food! A properly poured Guinness is a way to my heart and this place fits the bill. I had the steak sandwich and I would definitely order that again. The steak was flavorful and the mushrooms were fresh, none of that canned stuff...my mom had the cod sliders and loved them! TVs on for proper Saturday football viewing and staff was attentive. Highly recommend for a casual lunch!

Yelp
RC ( I hope I'm spelling this right "Arcie") was so amazing and welcoming!! It was my birthday weekend and she was more than accepting to the restaurant and I appreciate her so much!!! She was such a welcoming tender and I hope nothing but love follows her!! She is amazing and wondering!!! We love RC!!!

Yelp
Mac McGee is located in Downtown Roswell and we stumbled upon it while walking around Canton St. It reminds me of my time in Ireland and it's a very cozy, cool pub. We enjoyed the live music on a Thursday night and I had the traditional Irish coffee as a nightcap. The coffee was very sugary but I'd recommend. Cheers!

Yelp
Average food, below average service. Decent drinks. Would not recommend. Would not come back.

Yelp
How rude we were treated! we came here for a vacation on Wednesday May 24, 2023, there were very few people in the pub, we wanted to shoot darts and before we could read the stop sign we were yelled at by the bar tender don't go up there. I asked why because last time we were here we had a pleasant experience and played darts all night and enjoyed our visit. When I inquired as to why we couldn't play darts he said there were only two bartenders and they couldn't wait on us, I simply said we would come down and get our drinks and pay cash, he said "I said no" we left and partied all night elsewhere and will never come back.

Yelp
Love this place it is a Friday staple. The food is sneaky good. The perch is one of my favorite places to hang out. Plus they know how to por a Guinness!

Yelp
The staff here is insanely rude, will not go back due to that. I understand that everyone has bad days, but it was to the point that I'm writing this review.

Yelp
We just moved to the historic downtown area and were so excited to try out all the restaurants. This being the first one because we had a hankering for fish and chips. We got here and decided to sit on the patio bc we had a dog with us. The server came out right away. We of course ordered the fish and chips ($19), the vegetarian curry ($11), came highly recommended by the server and a Lemon Thyme cocktail ($9). The fish and chips were great, albeit a bit small for the price and the fries were a bit burnt..the curry, being the dish that was highly recommended, was bitter and lacking of flavor and sauce. I had to ask the server for additional sauce and bc it was so dry and I normally don't like a lot of sauce on my food. The drink was decent, not something I would order again. Overall, okay experience. Server didn't come back to give us any water and it was empty for over half of our meal. Food was subpar, will we return, probably not. This is a one time place for sure.

Yelp
Love the look inside, I've been here twice since I live down the road. Burgers are so good

Yelp
Pretty solid place. The Moscow Mules were good, the Scotch Eggs were *amazing* Fish and chips were nice but the batter doesn't stick well to the fish and the fries were soft (some people like their fries like that but I prefer crispy fries) my partner got the gyro and he liked it enough but said the lamb was a bit gamy. We had an Oreo chocolate mousse cake.. we were told it was a cheesecake but it wasn't, still tasty though! The atmosphere is fun here and the service was great, Fred and Brittany were very friendly.

Yelp
Always a treat to find an authentic Irish Pub in the oddest of places. Great bartenders, bands and service help bring it to a 3 star...the negatives that knocks it down are the pours....downright ANEMIC. Of course that has nothing to do with the bartenders. But - management, ENOUGH WITH THE HALF FINGER POURS. And we know you'll read this and say that's not what you've trained, but yes it is. Enough with the Lagavulin that you couldn't slide a credit card under. There are enough scotch and whiskey drinkers coming to your bar that you don't have to have the worst pours on Canton Street.

Shubhagato B.

Yelp
It's what you expect in an Irish pub. Lots of people, loud, live music (ok-ish), lots to drink. Go there to grab drinks and let your hair down - don't expect anything fancy. The finger food could be better though. Service is friendly- but the servers at the bar are overwhelmed and so your order can take time - be patient.

Yelp
This is a really fun bar/restaurant. Good for smaller groups having a get together, good for large groups of friends for an outing. The drinks are good (get the Russian Mule) and the food is pretty good as well. The dart board was a lot of fun and the TV's in the private function rooms make for a fun Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I'll be back!!

Yelp
First of all- The Service; Let's be clear how awesome they are for serving my family at all; We wandered in just MOMENTS before the kitchen closed on a Thursday night. Many many places would have said "sorry, the kitchen just closed" or would have made us feel AWFUL for choosing to order - but our server was AWESOME, and even though he said we would need to choose quickly- he was VERY sweet about it. Our server was prompt, attentive but not overly, he was friendly but not super chatty (and he was busy!)- and he made no mistakes. All around AWESOME service. We couldn't possibly be more grateful that they were so gracious & accommodating despite our lack of better timing..(We very much try to NEVER be *those people*, coming in right when the place is trying to clean and close.. but when we saw the hours online, we didn't realize the kitchen closes earlier than the bar, so it was an honest mistake. (Maybe it would be good to make a note on Yelp/fb/Google etc to make that clear? Only because EVERYONE should get the chance to eat here!) As far as the food: A++++++++ Hands down the best food I've had in the last twenty years; best chips (fries)- the best handmade taziki sauce, the best lamb burger & feta sauce, and OMFG.. The best bread pudding I've ever had in my life- literally the ONLY thing I was upset about; I was dying to get the strawberry rhubarb crumble that was listed online. (But hey, I respect that they aren't in season, and let's be clear - I would be perfectly fine to have that bread pudding as a last meal.) They are clearly proud of making everything from scratch and they should be. This was hands down the best meal I've had in a very long time, and not a single thing we had wasn't the best it could be. My 7 year old devoured everything put in front of him, giving it two thumbs up; even his cup of milk was huge (usually you pay $3+ for a tiny cup of milk at a restaurant- they brought him a huge to-go cup!) And my hubby; Despite burning the roof of his mouth due to the lava-esqe nature of Sheppard's Pie (his own fault, he knows better!!)- my husband continued to be impatient bc it was SO good, and cleaned his plate while it was still hot. We loved it so much that we're coming back tonight, because it's our last night in town. (And this time, we won't come in JUST as the kitchen is closing, I promise!)

Yelp
Best food ever All fresh and made in-house. Have enjoyed going there for years. It is not handicapped accessible and after being a customer for many years including going there for our anniversary on St. Patty's day, I can not go any longer.

Yelp
Mac McGee Great little Irish bar in historic Roswell, GA with great atmosphere. Good selection of Irish beers and a great selection of Irish and Scotch Whiskeys (or Whisky, as they call it, with a detailed explanation) and a good mixture of Irish and traditional American menu items. You'll love the hardwood floors and staircase that leads to a second level. Our waitress Victoria was awesome. The drinks came fast and all the staff were very personable. I highly recommend coming here.

Yelp
I was denied entry with my cardiac service dog for the first time. Went to another restaurant in the meantime to let crowd die down and came back only to be denied a second time entry with my cardiac service dog and was directed to outside seating. My friends bought drinks and had to bring them outside to me. After spending underserved money there I was then denied a third time entry to use the restroom. This time it was in front of a crowd of gentlemen who strongly disagreed with the man out front denying me entry. Very unlawful and unprofessional to deny me entry because of a disability. I have never felt so out of place and disrespected in my life and to have an entire crowd behind my back shows how much of a disgrace this action was. I will not be returning and I hope anyone else with a service dog does not get the same treatment. Very poor.
google avatar

Tyler R.

Yelp
My friend was denied entry into this bar because she had brought her cardiac service dog with her. Her dog was extremely well-behaved but the security would not let her enter, regardless of the service that her dog provided. This is completely against the law as we had all the paperwork to demonstrate that her dog was there for a medical condition.

Yelp
Place is a joke. Terrible customer service and food was disgusting. Only positive is the building and location. Stay away especially with so many other options on Canton St. Owner clearly could care less about the customers experience just wants your money for garbage they are selling

Yelp
DRINKS: We popped in here after a very late dinner and only for drinks. They were typical, nothing special. SERVICE: It was a busy Saturday night, crowded. After we got our drinks and opened a tab inside, we moved outside and since they lost track of us, they closed out our bill inside and added a 20% tip! To me that's stealing. The waiter expressed surprise at my dismay at having completed his own tip, and I asked for a refund. He gave me the tip potion back and complained and argued with me about it. In general, the bar tenders were a bit rude, maybe because it was a long busy night... I won't be back anything me soon, plenty of other places to try in that area.

Yelp
What a festive vibe here for St. Paddys day - with green miller lights and ligt up necklaces and shamrock necklaces - this place was a real win to be at for St. paddys day. The staff was making the best of it despite the corona virus jitters and was handing out hand sanitizer to patrons as they walked in and walked out. There was a giant photo frame and props that were being used to take St. Paddys pics. Well poured drinks and friendly accomodating staff.

Yelp
REVIEW OF THEIR IRISH COFFEE! And I guess the staff and location too. This is my favorite Irish Coffee in all of Atlanta. Why?] 1-No canned whip cream. The real stuff made sometimes to order. 2-Skip that gross creme de mint. Gross. Just gross. Just because it is Irish does not mean you need something green on it. 3-High quality whiskey in that drink. 4-Fresh coffee. Since this is really the only reason they ever brew coffee odds are they will make fresh when you order. Sometimes it takes a few minutes to create but like all good cocktails it is worth the wait. Oh yes and don't insult the skill of the bartender by just swirling it all together when you get it. That cream and coffee layering is part of the charm!
google avatar

Tristan S.

Yelp
Bar could use an update. But beer was inexpensive and bar tender was friendly. Didn't try the food.
google avatar

Jake C.

Yelp
While the food was great, my experience with this place has been terrible. Our waiter seemed drunk and we only saw him twice. Once to take our order and once to deliver the check. But guess what we saw more of than the waiter..... a literal rat. After it ran under our table across my friend's feet and then across the restaurant (it got away btw) our waiter then had the nerve to joke that it wasn't a big deal. No apology, no "don't worry, this isn't the norm", nothing. With that said, I did not tip. The final icing on the cake is that I just checked my bank statement and they wrote in a tip for themselves anyway. What a joke of an establishment. Can't believe I even chose to pay for the meal at all.

Yelp
1 star...and only because I can't give 1/2 a star. I will NOT be going back to Mac McGee's. Started off alright, menu when I sat down, soda brought to me quickly, food was out pretty fast...but then it was downhill. The server asked if she could go ahead and cash me out because she was about to get off, and someone else was coming in (this I completely understand, I spent 6 years in full service restaurants, so I had no problem with this). She brought me my check, I gave her my card - at this point I had 1/3 cup of coke left. She brought my card back a couple minutes later and put down the book with the card and receipt - at this point I had less than 1/4 cup of coke left (and it was mostly ice). She walked past several more times while my cup was empty, stopping to talk to the table next to me which I presume was her family with how she was playing with a guy's hair and I heard them saying "she should have been off by now she's in overtime" and then walked around the corner to where the server had went. I got tired of waiting for a refill and got up and went to the bar to get a refill (which seemed like an inconvenience to the bartender by the eye roll I got-but it would not have been a problem if I had gotten a refill from the server).

Yelp
My date and I stumbled into this place on an Easter Sunday afternoon. Originally looking for a coffee place, we were intrigued by the entrance, so we walked in and it was like love at first sight. I know, I know. This is kinda cheesy considering a Yelper should never judge a restaurant's food by the decor, however we were entranced by everything in the pub from the piano in the corner, to the bar, to the skylit room on the top floor in the back, and to the upstairs patio/balcony. Then later when I was looking for the restroom, I saw a basement! There's just so much character to this place and I love it. But enough about the decor. I ordered an Irish coffee and man, it was just way too strong for me. It was more like liquor with a splash of coffee. I think the taste got a little bit better towards the bottom. By this time, my date and I were just hanging out on the porch. It's really a great place to people watch even if it's raining. We eventually ordered some food. We had the curry chips and the adorable little boxty. The fries were delicious and the sauce was damn good. I can only imagine all the other things that could be used with the sauce as it wasn't quite as mustardy as I thought it would taste. As for the boxty, which is a small potato pancake with a quail egg sunny-side-up, it was delicious. I thoroughly enjoyed it all and the portions were great for a snack. I can't wait to go back. It's just such a cool place to hang out.

Yelp
So delicious! What a happy surprise! Wandered down Canton street and stumbled on this gem. Great pub atmosphere, incredibly friendly service and the food was SO good (and authentic!) My hubby had the fish and chips and I had the beet salad and the scotch egg. So yummy! This has become our favorite place!! I hate to write a review because I want to keep it secret!

Yelp
Ok now this is the place that needs to be yelped about!!! Wonderful food, friendly wait staff and love entertainment!!!! The perogies with butternut squash was like my husbands polish grandmother use to make! Freshest cod fish and delicious shrimp Chowder . The the meatball sandwich too. Ok now to the best part - the perfect on the mark Guinness Beer pour. Same as In Ireland!!! Thanks Jack for the pointers on whiskey selection too! We will certainly be back!!!

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night, it was super busy. Service was working hard, but they were understaffed and everything took forever. They had 2 specials - a Brussels sprouts appetizer, and curry mussels. We got both. The sprouts were so salty we could hardly eat them. And over half of what was served was leaves of sprouts that were charred - it was hard to find sprouts in the pile of charred leaves. As for the coconut curry mussels, I'm pretty sure they're not supposed to taste like body odor. I had one that was rotten and stopped eating. Then my husband got one that was rotten. By then, our water glasses had been empty for several minutes and we couldn't get anyone to refill our water, so we couldn't even wash it down. We gave up on water and spent the next 20 minutes trying to get the check so we could pay and leave. Seriously, worst dining experience we've had in many years.
google avatar

Deborah K.

Yelp
I love Irish pubs and this one has to be my favorite of all the Irish pubs I've visited. The Bangers and Mash is an absolute must!!! This may make zero sense but they taste like a man, and big string bearded man!!! Haha. The bread pudding was yummy as well!!

Yelp
Who goes to an Irish Pub for food? I do. If you go at night, on a weekend, you'll most likely be crammed in with seemingly hundreds of wedding party guests and regulars (which is also kinda fun). Mac McGee has a dynamic menu (ever changing) that always seems to win me over. There's a good energy and great staff (over the past three years). Regarding the food, it is really done right and I'm sorry to be so late giving them my menial support!

Anna T.

Yelp
The food was great but we will never be back. We saw the mouse running across my foot and floor more than the waiter. I am not referring to a metaphorical mouse, little Jerry scurried across my foot. The card was taken in the beginning therefore leaving was not an option. I was told keeping my feet on the booth (to keep away from Jerry's friends) was unacceptable.

Yelp
Mac McGee is an authentic Irish pub that's a great place to grab drinks after dinner in downtown Roswell, or to grab food if you're in the mood for some Irish pub food. Most times I come here solely for drinks, but I have tried their dinner once. I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it. I'm not a huge fan of Irish pub food, so I'm sure my personal preference plays a large role in the food critique. If you know that you don't love Irish food, then don't order food here. Grab dinner somewhere else in downtown Roswell and then head over to Mac McGee for drinks. If you do love Irish food then by all means give it a try. I've always been very impressed with their drink selections. They carry local beers as well as a variety of out of state beers which are on a rotating selection. I usually order beer when I come here, but I did try the sangria once and it was awesome. If you're a fan of mules, they have quite a few to choose from that sound pretty good. They have seating downstairs and upstairs, but if you come on a Friday or Saturday night it is slam packed. Finding a table at this time is difficult. As far as service goes I have had some very friendly and helpful servers, but I have also had some rude servers. Some of the bartenders are pretty standoffish. If you're looking for a casual and fun atmosphere in downtown Roswell, I would recommend giving Mac McGee a try.
