The Best Restaurants in Provincetown, Massachusetts | Eater Boston

"The extra effort to get to Mac’s, off the main drag of downtown, is more than worth it for the bounty of fresh seafood and creative bites among its sprawling menu. Start with blue mussels with grilled bread to dip into the garlic butter sauce, and then go for the brown butter lobster bao buns. The menu celebrates everything seafood, from sushi, to whole lobster and broiled fish, though the spice-crusted ahi tuna is a standout. Of note, too, is that the whole menu of gluten-free fried seafood, like classic fish and chips." - Nathan Tavares

It’s rare to have such an extensive menu available for my gluten free partner but Macs really delivers on that front! Shout out to our server Marcelo who waited on us both nights we went because he was so helpful with navigating allergens and super friendly. My partner was thrilled to be able to have a gluten free lobster roll, shrimp tempura sushi, onion rings, chowder, and fried clams. Only a few items on the menu can’t be prepared gluten free and everything we had was delicious. Also their happy hour is great.

Mac’s Fish House Provincetown was pretty good! It was a bit on the pricier side, but the food was tasty. Our waitress was great, but we had an interesting experience —we decided to go to Mac’s because the fried whole belly clams on reviews looked insanely good, so that’s what we ordered. A different waitress came with our order and said “here are the fried oysters.” The whole time I was kind of questioning whether they were oysters or clams, and in the end, I think they did serve us fried oysters instead, but when the bill came, they charged us the price for whole bellies, which was $4 more. I should’ve asked in the beginning to clarify, but it is what it is.

Had dinner at Mac’s last night with a friend, and it was delicious. I frequent their market next door, but it had been a while since I had been in for dinner. We both had a cocktail and an entree. The Swordfish and Mussel curry was delicious while my dining partner had the seared scallop entree, which looked gorgeous. Overall, a very consistent meal.

**update: and we visited the place two days in a roll for our long weekend trip ! Visit here for dinner by hotel front desk’s recommendation. Every seafood we ordered are fresh! Freshly cooked! And cooked perfectly !! The most impressive two are steam lobsters and steam clam, both are the best we’ve tasted in this winter. Overall I highly recommend the restaurant and would definitely want to come back again.

The name of the restaurant belies the upscale vibe. The server was attentive and our meals were outstanding. I had fish and chips and my wife had cod cheeks and shrimp macaroni. Highly recommended!

Great service and good! The raw bar is excellent every time! Their fried calamari - is a must try - a very delicious combo with arugula!

The oysters are a must-try here! They tasted so fresh and paired very well with the wine! I would also suggest the lobster fettuccine. It was a bowl full of buttery goodness 🤌🏻

Local friends brought us out for dinner here. Maybe I am spoiled from living on Long Island but for a place that serves primarily seafood there was alot of shells in all of the items. Seems that either the chef didn’t train the kitchen staff right or they are just lazy. We had the fried clam bellies. Which I expected 1 or 2 crunches, but it was every other piece. With the baked hand grenades every bite had a crunch. It was like they didn’t know how to open the scallops and just used hammers and then didn’t rinse them off afterwards. The bartender we had was amazing and the drinks were well made but I had to resist shaming the chef. For the price I wouldn’t return.

Yelp
Excellent service & food. Had a reservation but after enjoying happy hour at the bar, decided to forgo our table & eat there. Husband enjoyed the half-price oysters during happy hour. Also had the "all you can eat" fish/chips. I had Ritz crusted bluefish with mashed potatoes & creamed spinach. Finished dinner sharing flourless chocolate cake, Needless to say we both thoroughly enjoyed dinner! Our bartender was appropriately attentive which added to our satisfaction. Double thumbs up to Mac's.

Yelp
By far the best lobster in the Provincetown area. The market is small, but fantastic. Look in the refrigerators which carry a range of fresh veggies and smoked fish and a salmon spread. Try Mac's Greek salad it's simple, but fantastic, one of the best that I've ever had. It's far from the crowds and the tourist traps. Definitely worth a trip. Sit at the outside bar while you're waiting for your market order and if you're lucky it will be happy hour where the price on the oysters can't be beat. Update: The New York Times yesterday featured MAC'S in their 36 hours in Provincetown article. They deserve the attention!

Yelp
Not my first visit to Mac's and it won't be my last, but there was some left to be desired this time. Our waiter was very nice, but took a while to take our order, bring drinks, bring the check, etc- but to be fair the evening was a bit busy. The food was incredible though! The fish tacos were assemble- your- own and had a lot of fresh, light fish. The broiled scallops were solid, the mashed potatoes just melted in your mouth. The seared local scallops plate had good intentions, but was a bit disappointing. The sauce (veloute) didn't have any flavor, I couldn't pick out the lobster or the basil. But the scallops and overall dish were light and refreshing! The Bermuda soup had a slight kick to it, but very wholesome and I wish the cup was bigger. Lastly the fries were some of the best I've had lately which is surprising. Overall happy with Mac's! Probably one of the better higher end spots on the cape.

Yelp
I've eaten at Mac's the past two times while visiting Provincetown. The last time I would have it given 5 stars, but unfortunately my most recent visit was closer to 2 stars so my overall rating is 3 stars. On the first visit to Mac's my party was seated at the sushi bar, which worked out because we had come specifically for the sushi. Sitting at the sushi bar, the service was great and our sushi came out quickly. The sushi at Mac's is the best in Provincetown and you can really taste the freshness of the fish they use. Most of their sushi menu is labeled gluten-free as well. On the most recent visit, my party was seated at the indoor "patio seating", which was a set of high-top tables located between the bar and the regular tables. My party was largely ignored all night in favor of the regular tables, while also being too far from the bar to order from a bartender. We arrived at 8pm and were seated quickly, but did not get menus or water until 8:30pm. After ordering at 8:45pm, it took until 9pm to get drinks (which is also the time the bar closes so forget about ordering another drink), and almost 9:30pm until the food came out. The restaurant stopped seating people at 9pm and by that time there were only two or three other parties, all at the regular tables. The whole time waiting I noticed the other parties receive multiple rounds of drinks and food, while the waitress did not check up on us once. Our party did not receive the check until almost 10pm. I had no qualms about the food (the sushi was still great) but the whole experience was very off-putting. The hostess recommended booking a reservation in advance in order to sit at a regular table, but that should not mean seating walk-ins and then proceeding to ignore them in favor of those with reservations. While all of the regular tables were filled, the "patio seating" was mostly empty so there is space to seat walk-ins. The restaurant manager was standing by the hostess the whole time but I did not see him approach any tables or check up on diners. I would considering eating at Mac's again because it is one of the better seafood and sushi restaurants in Provincetown. At the same time, I would also either make a reservation or sit at the bar to ensure decent service.

Yelp
Mac's is a classic, townie joint that benefits tourists. The fish is fresh and service slow. It's a bit too loud for my liking. The clam chowder is adequate - it has a weird taste and is very thin. Skip their fries and if you must, order them well done.

Yelp
Away from the craziness of Commercial Street, on Shank Painter, Mac's serves up some awesomely good food. We had the Grenades, a mash up of spicy tuna, scallops and shrimp maki, cod cheeks, charred octopus (with babaghanoush and chermoula), yellowfin sashimi (tender and velvety), an entree of mussels and cod in curry and pearl cous cous, and Bermuda fish soup (wow). There are a few non fish/seafood items, but why venture from the main attraction. Service casual and friendly. This may be one of my new favorite spots in town.

Yelp
The food and service was amazing , my children and husband makes Mac's restaurant our place to go every Wednesday.

Yelp
This has become our go to spot every year we come to Ptown. The food and atmosphere are great BUT we're here for the half price oysters and clams. They are so fresh and briny. Max our server was the nicest guy and helpful. Everyone is nice. And we will be returning again on Monday. And next year too!

Yelp
I'm combining my experiences this summer in one review and averaging out the number of stars provided. To start with my first experience this summer, I would have given the restaurant a total of two stars. The service wasn't that great. Our orders had all come in late, many things were missing from the menu, and the food didn't taste fresh. It was a strange and rare experience so that's why we decided not to hold it against them and come back. I had ordered oysters and sushi as per usual. During the second visit, our service was a lot better. The food was delicious, it tasted fresh, and the service was quick. I would have given my experience during that visit four or five stars. When I come here, I always like to order oysters and sushi because the fish is amazing. I usually get a spicy tuna roll, a Philadelphia roll, salmon sashimi, tuna sashimi, and octopus sashimi. The third time around the service was great too, and I would have also rated that a four or a five. This time around I decided to do something a little different. I also ordered the shishito peppers, and instead of the spicy tuna roll, I ordered unagi instead. I didn't think I would like it because the idea of eating eel kind of freaked me out, but it was amazing. The flavor and crunch made it all come together. I think it might be my new favorite from here. Just writing this review makes me miss the restaurant. I really look forward to my next visit, and I believe it's one of the best restaurants in Provincetown.

Cris C.

Yelp
I don't usually post reviews unless I am truly impressed. We went back twice in the same weekend because everything was amazing. Rolls, lobster, calamari, curry swordfish. Cooked perfectly, service was quick, friendly, attentive. We will definitely come back

Yelp
Rather than shelling out 20-30 bucks to park near Commercial Street, I opted to try Mac's. My spouse and I didn't have reservations on a mid-June weekday night at 6pm - after a perfect beach day! - but they offered us a two top in the back patio near the service station or we could sit at the bar. The bar, of course, were the better seats by a landslide. Our barkeep was attentive and serve was whiplash fast. Cocktails were strong and our waters kept full. We split the Caesar wedge - lightly dressed with pillowy shaving of Parmesan and mini croutons - and opted for trying their entrees rather than go for a more traditional lobster roll or fried seafood route (because those meals too must be had when on the Cape). I got the seared scallops with gnocchi, he the halibut with lobster mash. Both were quite tasty, though the halibut was a little overdone & could have used a piece of baguette to sop up the broth. We split a slice of flourless chocolate torte - it was creamy and dense just like one expects. There were only three options for dessert, which was surprising when considering how extensive their menu is, though I suppose one comes here to gorge on seafood. Recommended!

Yelp
Mac's fish house is an easy restaurant off the main ptown strip that was recommended by a local. It is easy, has an extensive menu ranging from fried seafood and lobster to sushi. The ambiance is casual, with outdoor covered patio in the front and the back. Our waitress was nice enough, but didn't seem to give our table the attention most other tables around us were getting. We didn't get any refills for our iced teas, even though she came by and saw they were low. Perhaps we were a smaller table or three younger guys compared with the larger family tables. The food: clam chowder was seasoned okay, could've used a bit more salt and garlic for my taste but it was fine. A bit watery, but some people prefer that over thicker chowder so this may be a matter of personal preference. Plenty of small clam chunks. Fried oyster bao was well seasoned, but a bit over priced for what it was (small fried oyster with some seaweed salad and pickle in a bao). The fried oyster seafood platter for dinner came with ample fries and 11 deep fried oysters. I initially thought they were fried clams because they were so small, but nope, they were oysters. Fine quality, just a bit small. Fish tacos were okay - broiled was not as well seasoned as the deep fried which is a bit more tempura battered. All in all, a solid 4/5 place off the main strip. I'd be back. FYI they also charge much more for a lobster dinner for dine in than for take out - so you may want to grab takeout from the market store to the side if you're going for lobster. A bit pricy just for the extra corn and mashed potatoes in my opinion.

Yelp
Always fresh seafood!! We are regular mussel buyers at the fresh market. They have been awesome this year. Great fish fry on Thursdays. Cod is light and flaky. Great bar area also
google avatar

Taylor G.

Yelp
Wow, how incredibly disappointing. I know ptown is expensive but like come on. All of our meals were sub par and SO SMALL i cannot explain how insultingly small. Just wow. Avoid. Eat at cumberlin farms across the street if you have too.
google avatar

Allie K.

Yelp
We've been to other Mac's locations and love them, so we gave Ptown a try. They have a bigger menu than Chatham, including sushi! The patio is dog friendly. Most items at Mac's can be prepared gluten free, including gluten free fried seafood (clean fryers!) and tamari for sushi! We had sushi, calamari and some fries. Everything was absolutely delicious and gluten free. The fish was fresh and delicious, the calamari had great flavor, and who doesn't love French fries. I love being able to get gluten free fried seafood at Mac's. The service was great and we loved being able to sit on the covered patio with our dog.

Jaxon M.

Yelp
Top tier food, get yourself some special maki's! A must do in P town. Crab rangoon roll

Yelp
Great tasty food. Pleasant atmosphere. Great wait staff. For just a fisherman's idea Mac's is spot on with hometown vibes and some unique menu items. Truly an underated gem.

Nicholas S.

Yelp
Just went there to spend some money and have a good night but sat at the bar and was told the seats were saved. Plenty other places want my cash merry Xmas

Yelp
Had a great meal here with friends. Wheenver we're in P-Town, it turns into shrimpfest because I love shrimp! We started with some shrimp cocktail and then I had fried shrimp for my entree. Everything was great and our server (Kate?) was incredible. I had a Mac's Manhattan to drink and it was great...very strong. For dessert we had key lime pie which was so incredible. We actually had two pieces thanks to our server. I'd literally go back just for the pie but everything else is good too. Will definitely be adding this to our P-Town restaurant rotation.
google avatar

Jewels P.

Yelp
Still terrific! The staff is a little stuck-up, but that's okay, They're still professional and give great service.

Danny F.

Yelp
What happened to the wine selection? Mac's is a great place, but I noticed this summer and currently the wine list isn't very exciting anymore. There used to be interesting small producers to choose from. Now the list is pedestrian and corporate. It certainly doesn't match the excellent food. Maybe it's time to change the wine buyer?
google avatar

Chad H.

Yelp
We were on the Cape recently and like most who visit were craving some seafood. As first timers to Provincetown we quickly realized most restaurants either have super long waits or require reservations fare in advance. After our original dinner fell through we pivoted and gave Mac's a try. We really enjoy this dining experience for these reasons: -Ability to make day-of reservations online -Raw bar happy hour from 3-5 -plenty of outdoor seating -Ease of access, nice parking lot outside (I'm turning into my parents) We were craving sushi and oysters, which is primarily what are meal consisted of in addition to some beer and wine. The oysters and sushi were incredibly fresh. I was really impressed with the sushi menu, they had a lot of original House rolls. The price is reasonable and the service was excellent. They have happy hour from 3 to 5 so definitely don't miss that. If you find yourself in Provincetown and are craving some excellent seafood, and want a stress-free dining experience this is definitely your spot.
google avatar

Mia T.

Yelp
A bit of a walk away from the Main Street area, but worth going out of your way. Everything on the menu looked delicious and we had a hard time deciding. Our server was helpful in recommending a few dishes but ultimately got the ahi tuna and seafood curry. The ahi tuna was super fresh and tender and the seafood curry was super filling. There's also an expansive drink menu so you're sure to find something you'll enjoy
google avatar

Stephanie H.

Yelp
If you love fish, I highly recommend. Not many non seafood options, but what I did find was great. Miso soup, edamame and house salad with grilled chicken. All great good flavor and perfect portions. Squidward enjoyed the scallops, that looked amazing. Almost tempted to try. Our wait staff, Georgia's, was super friendly and helpful. Great smile and very welcoming. Offered suggestions and was pleasant throughout our dining experience. We stayed for dessert, key lime pie, despite us being full. Pie was very good!!!
google avatar

Nicholas R.

Yelp
Food is consistently great, staff is friendly and responsive. The main dining room and bar are especially nice environments, less so the outdoor areas which can be loud and feel a bit basic. Overall a great place, reservations recommended!
google avatar

Celina D.

Yelp
We had high hopes for this place but it really wasn't that great. My lobster salad had bones in it and my husbands Fish and chips had bones in it too. We ordered the shrimp cocktail and they were tiny!!! I would say this isn't a must stop if you are in PTOWN. Cocktails were good and the service was great though. Just very underwhelming food. Ambiance was nice!
google avatar

Keegan P.

Yelp
Over $100 for 2 people without drinks. Everything was mid unfortunately. I got the broiled swordfish and it was barely cooked.. Sent it back and got fish and chips, this was better but same as the swordfish it was still kinda soft and slimy inside versus tender and flaky. First time having seafood on the east coast, maybe that just how they do it out here but it was not for me. Also do not get the pork belly lettuce cups, disgusting.

Toby C.

Yelp
We've been coming for years and always enjoyed everything about Mac's. No more. After over an hour of waiting since the orders were taken the waitress appeared to say our dinners would come out shortly. Yeah. Nope. Another Half an hour passes and we asked her to at least bring the kids's chicken tenders and chowder, which she did. So now we're about 90 min. Into our visit. The manager appears. He says our ticket was lost. He's sorry. Another wait. It took over an hour and a half to get our meals. Swordfish curry with mussels. This is a seafood restaurant. Be warned. It was 4-5 chili spicy! I love it, but one of us doesn't and after 1 bite she couldn't eat the meal. No warning that this would be spicy. We were comped a small percentage for the almost 2 hour wait time for our meals, but that didn't make up for: no bread, inquiries, something, anything for kids to eat while waiting, Uber spicy fish without any such description on the menu, miserable service, and overall terrible experience. Nobody noticed that we sat for an hour and a half without food? 10 people? Bad deal, Mac's. All agreed this was our last visit and I do not recommend.
google avatar

Ross S.

Yelp
I'm a townie and have eaten here many times. Food was top notch this past Saturday. I had Pork Belly Lettuce Cups as an appetizer, followed by their Grilled Rib Eye Steak. My dining companion went on a seafood streak (the restaurant is top notch with their seafood offerings). Service was impeccable. The restaurant was quite busy, but we were taken care of with kid gloves. We sat at a table in the bar area. This is a really nice way to go. Very intimate. Finished with Key Lime Pie, and two cocktails were had. For a full dinner with no skipped course we had a bill of $90/person. Fair pricing. And parking is free surrounding the building (really nice for Provincetown in the Summer).
google avatar

Lydia K.

Yelp
Not too fancy but can't beat the half price raw bar happy hour!!! $40 lobster roll? Not so much. Delicious but too pricey for me.

Randall F.

Yelp
The best byfar in Provincetown. What an amazing restaurant. Everything is fresh and it doesn't seem possible, but everything is gluten-free.

CR D.

Yelp
Our go to place on the Cape. Simply the best. And happy hour with half price Wellfleets is a super bonus. Ahi Tuna to die for as well. Four visits our last trip out.

Frank M.

Yelp
Always good Very reliable. I always order the sushi, and we usually have the lettuce wraps.
google avatar

Gregory S.

Yelp
Went here twice during our week stay in Provincetown. The lobster was delicious and easy to remove from the shell. We recommend the octopus as an appetizer, and the fish soup is a must!
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
Stopped here for the half price raw bar and was absolutely blown away by the food! Fresh, creative, and delicious! The standouts were the oysters (Welfleet) the cod cheeks, swordfish fish and mussel curry, dumplings (in the most delicate but flavorful broth) and calamari! Loved the non alcoholic options for those of us not drinking and the cocktails were strong! We got our moneys worth on those. Service was outstanding! Marcelo was friendly, efficient and had the best suggestions. He's the reason we came back for a second time during our one week stay down the cape. Definitely will be back next year!

Joan D.

Yelp
We had two very enjoyable meals at Mac's. Food was yummy and service lovely. We prefer the ambiance outdoors. Always recommended.
google avatar

Danielle D.

Yelp
Macs was great! Went twice while in PTown. First for happy hour. Half off oysters and clams. Best clams. Super fresh. We also went for dinner. I am celiac and so is the owner so the staff is informed and I felt comfortable eating there. I had delicious scallops and a octopus appetizer.
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
Great food and service. Seafood is fresh and tasty. A great place for dinner and drinks.
google avatar

Lauren P.

Yelp
Great food! Server was knowledgeable and the restaurant has lots of options for people with celiac!

Heather R.

Yelp
Food is great, price is right especially for their happy hour. Some of the staff was sassy and not nice but others were great & sweet
google avatar

Shawn P.

Yelp
We came here for lunch, and surprisingly there was no wait for a table. There was definitely a wait for service. The drinks we had were pretty alright once we finally got them. I had a couple pieces of sushi (tuna, shrimp) and they were pretty standard...not bad, not great. We all got lobster rolls and after trying multiple lobster rolls all over town, we all agreed (4 of us) that this one was out least favorite. It came on just a regular slice of bread, and not a ton of flavor. The lobster was more chewy than you think of with fresh lobster. After hearing from a few Uber drivers, it sounds like there are other things that are more known for...so I'd give them a second try, maybe.
google avatar

AB H.

Yelp
We got take out lobsters, fish and chips, and a couple other fish entrees. The lobster was $50. They were good. We wanted an easy take out lobster dinner, and this fit the bill.
google avatar

Alex A.

Yelp
this was the BEST restaurant we could have chosen after a long day in ptown!! we got there a little after 5pm which was perfect because we missed rush hour. the atmosphere & decor was pleasant, the staff wonderful. all of the food was bursting with flavor - truly spectacular (from someone very critical)!! the buffalo wings were very tasty & had a good kick - it was actually spicy. the east coast halibut was to die for there was actually a good portion of lobster in the mashed potatoes - making the high price worth it. the fish was perfectly cooked, tender inside and a little crispy on the outside. the only thing the dish was missing was some vegetables to brighten it up, but perfect nonetheless. this is a MUST try for your visit
google avatar

Karen H.

Yelp
We've eaten here several times before. Tonight we tried to place an online takeout order. we got through the entire order and then received a message that online ordering wasn't available. We called and were told it'll be up and running in 15 min. We waited and tried again, still no. We had been charged for multiple orders, however. We called the restaurant and were told we would receive a call back as soon as possible about the 3 charges that were processed. We are still waiting. What a debacle.
google avatar

Lauren J.

Yelp
I love coming here when I'm in P-Town! It is close to the downtown central area and has a parking lot - yay! The service has always been friendly and efficient - no complaints! Also - I love that they have indoor (bar or table) or outdoor seating - whatever you please. Mac's Fish House has $1 oysters and clams every day from 3-5 PM. How can you beat it? The oysters come out quickly and well-shucked. The cocktail sauce comes the horseradish, so good to go there. I'm not a fan of their mignonette recipe, but that's ok. Oysters - check! The mixed drinks are always well made too! I've had many a different variety of martini (the last being a Manhattan) and they're always strong and delicious. I can't say that I've had the "regular food", but Mac's is always worth a stop by for oysters and cocktails at the very least!
google avatar

Julie L.

Yelp
Gluten free clam chowder! My celiac family members always wants to go here for the chowder.

Yelp
This venue is a pleasant surprise. In my opinion has the most comfortable bar in the area of Ptown. The food experience is marvelous and service superb. Ita a most place to visit if you are in Ptown fir a calm weekend. Service and ambience its a treat. I totally recommend this venue. Every time I visit it I feel like home..I give 5 stats. They deserve this title.

Yelp
Great oyster happy hour. Friendly servers, good drinks and sushi. Very nice fish market too.

Yelp
Daily 3-5pm Happy hour $1 raw bar! It's a bit away from the port and busy commercial area of P-town, but still close by. Nice selection of drinks and apps. All food we got was pretty good. Shishito peppers were easy to snack on, calamaris and all fried stuff were cornmeal (?) crusted thus gluten free, can't miss the fresh plum oysters! The seared scallops were also cooked at perfect temperature, a bit too salty on the crust, but the corn purée base and gnocchis were very good. Nice seating area with covered patio, perfect for casual dinner or special occasion.
