"Mad Capper is one of Stillwater’s longest-standing bars: First opened in 1979, the space and menu were revamped in 2021. The historic feel remains, but from the new menu, expect small plates like truffle fries, smoked fish dip, and bruschetta, plus burgers, paninis, and house-made pasta. The cocktail, wine, and draft beer menus are also robust." - Justine Jones, Eater Staff

We were on a girl's trip from Iowa, and we absolutely loved this restaurant!! The service by Laurie was fabulous & the food was delicious! We will return & stay closer to this cute town, especially because of our experience at this little gem! ❤️

Google
Such a fun experience, amazing food and beer. Ordered steak bites, truffles fries, Benedict burger, the special favorite lager and a mango blonde ale. The staff is super friendly and the food came out quickly! Big recommend for anyone wanting a laid back atmosphere where you can easily talk with friends.

Great lunch at the Mad Capper on Friday May 23rd! We were celebrating a birthday and our server, Chelsea, was AMAZING! We had the French onion soup and the Chicken Wild Rice soup and both were terrific! We shared the chipotle patty melt and they split the meal for us and that’s always a plus! The drinks were really good and they had a great selection of cocktails! Really great service from everyone there! Such a nice local restaurant with great staff and good food! Thanks for a great afternoon!! And the liqueur advice ( order a beer shot! It’s NOT beer. Really really good!) Also, the music was great too! Perfect blend of 70’s-80’s music 🎶 - Wendy and Dave

We had our wedding reception here for our smaller intimate wedding of 50 ppl and it was everything we wanted and more! Mandee is amazing and so easy to work with, she basically assumed the roll of whatever we needed and did it flawlessly! The bar and wait staff were awesome and the drinks were stronggg which is not a bad thing haha! I can’t even tell you how many people told us that this was the best wedding food they’ve ever had! We had the Steak Medallions, Cajun Chicken Alfredo, and the Gnocchi Burrata Pasta and it was all amazing 12/10! Our appetizers were also to die for, especially the duck wontons! All in all, if you’re considering Mad Capper for a chill and moody private event or reception DO IT! It was exactly what we wanted and we are so happy we chose to do it there!

I love the building and everything about the atmosphere. The food however was severely lacking, the flavor did not match the plating. I had the chicken and waffles which were very bland... No flavor to the waffles or breading on the chicken the spicy orange glaze had no heat whatsoever until my very last bite. Daughter had chicken strips and fries for the price I was hoping they were hand breaded. Certainly not. Last but not least wife got the mush and Swiss asked for it well done which usually she wouldn't do but she's pg, ended up getting a medium rare. The server Chelsea I believe her name was did comp the burger from the bill luckily and gave us the I put it in as well done but honestly I don't believe her lol took forever to get our bill plus the other waitress was the one who asked if we needed our table cleared and any boxes, we addressed our complaints to her she disappeared in the back to I'm assuming to get our waitress who was smoking... Overrall pretty bad experience. Next time we're in Stillwater we will keep walking by. P.s. ridiculously expensive

Come one, come all. Get drunk and learn how to spell the word “Vinaigrette” - yeah, looks weird, doesn’t it? They have it right though - so don’t call them out on it and embarrass yourself though.

Food and decor is great! Highly recommend. And you can reach a few Pokestops from here.

We stopped at the Mad Capper for drinks and lunch. Our server Lindsey was amazing and went overboard in making sure we had everything we need. The drink variety was great. We had the Italian nachos and the fried ice cream. Both were delicious but I must say the nachos were over the top. I would highly recommend stopping in at the Mad Capper.

Yelp
My daughters wedding reception was recently held there and I can't say enough about the experience! The staff were so friendly and accommodating, willing to help with anything we needed help with! The place was super cool inside and they had everything set up for us when we got there. The food was FANTASTIC... our friends are still commenting on how great the food was! Thank you so much for taking such good care of us on such a special day!!! Kris K.

Yelp
We were looking for somewhere we hadn't tried before in Stillwater, so the Mad Capper it was! We each started with a cup of white chicken chili. Omg. Yum!!! It was happy hour when we were there, so we decided to share the Parmesan fries and the slider trio. There were a ton of fries for $4. They were thin like McDonald's fries and sprinkled with salt, pepper and shredded Parmesan. They came with a garlic aioli for dipping. They were good, but not my favorite ever. The sliders were great! There were three of them....i think a mushroom and Swiss, a cowboy and a jalapeno burger? The drinks and service were also great. We will definitely come back to try other things.

Casey S.

Yelp
I've walked by the Mad Capper a bunch and always thought it was just a dive bar, but we stopped in for lunch and found a charming old timey saloon vibe. Chelsea was an excellent server and made some great suggestions about the menu. We enjoyed our view of main street from our window booth. The Bloody Mary's were good. The gnocchi with burrata was good and filling.

Danielle W.

Yelp
Service was great and the food was excellent! Noisy atmosphere but that was expected. Would recommend their grilled cheese and Gin Buck cocktail.

Luke G.

Yelp
Overpriced. My biggest complaint is that the pasta was essentially soup. See the picture. Towards the end of the dish you couldn't even tell where your final bites of pasta were because they were fully immersed. The fries weren't bad, and the wings were crispy

Aj s.

Yelp
The service was good, nice people, good vibe and a decent looking little old bar. I ordered some sort of pesto gnocchi. It was badly burnt, and dull. Anyways if you go here I'd probably just get a burger if I were u.

Yelp
A group of friends were in Stillwater for the snow sculpture competition. After walking around we walked over to grab some lunch (if you're driving down expect mostly street parking or to walk from a lot). It was busy as expected but we did get seats at the bar. I ordered a mule mocktale which was tasty and a classic smashburger. The burger was done to my liking but could have had more seasoning and it felt like there were too many toppings like onion and tomatoes compared to the thickness of the burger. Fries were pretty standard. I'd say overall service was friendly and food was okay.

Sydney S.

Yelp
We were walking down mainstreet in need of some lunch so we stopped here! It was easy to get a table for four. Our server was so pleasant and fun even on such a rainy day. This place really has a funky pub atmosphere - big bar in the middle but plenty of tables around. I didn't love our booth area - it was more like a couch with pillows and no good backrest but it fit the vibe of the restaurant. The food was good but nothing too special. I went with a cheeseburger with grilled onions. It was big enough that I only ate half - so worth the money. It was cooked great and was delicious. Was a little disappointed at how little fries we got, and they didn't impress me personally. Overall, I wouldn't be opposed to heading back in the future - but I'd rather go somewhere more unique in the area.

Mike C.

Yelp
Amazing place! Superb food, charming space, great hospitality! Every time we visit we are impressed.

Nandini A.

Yelp
This is such a cute, unassuming place in Stillwater. I love the ambiance and high ceilings. They have cool decor sprinkled about the inside which makes the experience even better. The burrata was soooo delicious and we licked the plate clean. The food is also reasonably priced and very filling, maybe a little too filling. We were stuffed! I loved how many options there were so all of my friends could find something they liked. The waitress was also such a darling and brought our food to us quickly. I'd definitely make a stop back here again!

Xia Y.

Yelp
Stopped in for some drinks. Nothing too fancy or outstanding. The kitchen was close. The restaurant looked pretty clean.

Nicole G.

Yelp
Stopped here for a late lunch/early dinner on Saturday, 12/9/23. We had a little bit of a wait to be seated with our group of 5. However, it was worth the wait! Staff were very friendly and communicative. They came up to us often while we waited to offer options for seating. The restaurant was very neatly decorated. Had some holiday decorations. We loved the leg lamp from the classic movie A Christmas Story (huge fans of the movie). They also had local paintings from artist in MN. Drinks were great. I'll be back for an espresso martini for sure. Lots of speciality cocktails on the menu. The food... we all loved everything, but realized our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We had a good laugh! The Italian wonton nachos are the best nachos I've ever had. A must get! The portions are very generous. We needed a lot of boxes, but had a meal for the next day. Such a great experience and glad we found this gem!

Yelp
The food here was excellent!! I had the tomato basil soup with dumplings. The flavor of the soup was Devine. My boyfriend shared the soup and he even took it away. Then we had the Duck with bacon appetizer. OMG!! This was so creamy and delicious!! Six wasn't enough. Then for our main entree we shared the Cajun chicken fettuccine. That was such a highlight of our meal. It had a creamy texture with orange and yellow peppers. It was fantastic!!! My boyfriend and I plan on coming back!! Definite place to go with good food!!! The waitress we had was super sweet, pretty and a great server!!!

Yelp
Recently, I visited this profound establishment. From the point of entry all the way to my seat, I was greeted with top-tier service. My choice of food was the cowboy burger. Once my burger arrived promptly, it wasn't cold or too hot. Each bite was nothing shy of delicious, aromatic, yummy, flavorful, appetizing, mouth-watering, luscious, tender, and scrumptious. The presentation of the burger complimented what each bite tasted like. I particularly loved the bun to meat ratio. The meat was 100% real beef, and the bread was toasted to perfection. If anyone is in the community for a mouth-watering burger, I behoove you too try them out, you won't be disappointed.

Lisa S.

Yelp
Our PubPass brought us here for dinner and a beer after golf. I had the Fairstate Party Forward Hazy IPA since it's state fair time. It was wonderfully cold and refreshing with the right amount of hoppy flavor. I asked our server what food they were known for and she enthusiastically said 'the pasta'. So my choice for dinner was made. I opted for the Garganelli and it was fantastic. The creamy pesto sauce covered the garganelli noodles with a light coating. The noodles on top had a nice crispy coating of parm cheese. Prosciutto was a welcome taste with each bite. The portion size was also perfect. Too often pasta is served in a size to feed four. I'm not a leftover gal so I liked keeping the portion smaller. I did have to pay extra for a toasted bread side which I think should come with a $16 pasta meal. It was super good though. Fun old-timey bar feel. Cool booths in the windows. Great stop.

Yelp
Three of us stopped for lunch, two ordered the pan fried walleye and one ordered the fish and chips. We came back second time so I could have the pan fried walleye which was wonderful not over breaded, and the French onion soup was also delicious. Our daughter had pot roast on the second visit and my wife had the spaghetti with marinara sauce - the chef was most accommodating. What we like is all the food came out "HOT" so often is is cooled by the time it is served. The big Johnny Walker Black pour on big ice was most enjoyable The ambiance is pleasant, our server Lexi, was wonderful and very attentive to our needs. We come from Atlanta to visit family 3 or 4 times a year in the Stillwater area and will definitely make the Mad Capper a regular stop. Bill B

Amanda B.

Yelp
We went here because all the other restaurants had long waits, and this place had immediate seating. Our waiter forgot to submit over half of our order. The food we did get was just okay - very greasy Italian nachos, and bland walleye fingers.

Carrie J.

Yelp
New ownership brings difficult changes to accept. Mad Capper has always been one of my favorites. The new menu is rather small and lacking a lot. I wish they would at least Lee the staples that made the Mad Capper the Mad Capper, otherwise change the name and make it their own. I had the pesto chicken sandwich, it was just ok. Fries were perfect. The wild rice soup was wonderful, but again I miss all the options on the old menu had including more than one soup choice. They have changed the decor and cleaned up the old place very nicely. Nice touch on the fedora chandeliers!

Shelby L.

Yelp
Very nice spot on the Main Street of Stillwater. Excellent food, great service, and good ambiance. The pasta we had was incredible!

Clarice P.

Yelp
Went on a date with my fiancé for the first time to Mad Capper. The decor was so cute and pleasing and we were sat immediately. We had got there at 8 on a Friday night, and it wasn't too busy. It did take a while for a server to come take our orders, but I don't think anyone told her we were there so that's okay. She was very nice and sweet. We got a truffle fries for an appetizer and it was awesome. I got an espresso Madtini and the gnocchi. It was delicious. I cannot say anything more or I'll get too hungry. I'm putting 4 stars down because my partner (who has some picky eating problems due to person reasons so be nice) basically got fettucini alfredo, which is not on the menu. The restaurant does have chicken fettuccini alfredo with some other yummy things on it, but my partner just wanted it plain. The server was very nice and understanding and was able to get that for us, but it was so bland. It was like eating textured water. Thankfully we didn't get charged the full price of the chicken alfredo they have, but I really don't think $21 was worth it either. Nonetheless, I think if it was the alfredo they have on the menu, it would have been delicious. I cannot wait to come again for the gnocchi, cause I'm hungry lol

Yelp
Stopped in here for brunch for a bachelorette party and it was a great little spot to kick off our festivities :) We had a table of 8 and service was fabulous. I split a margarita pizza with someone and that was plenty of food for us. Although, choosing what to order was tough -- everything sounded good. Moderately priced. Good service. Delicious food. Would visit again :)

Yelp
I LOVE Mad Capper and I'm so glad it's been renovated into what it is today. The space itself is amazing... Great tables, so much space, and really cool photos and memorabilia on the way. It's like an upscale townie bar. Can't beat it. I've only ever had burgers and sandwiches here, and that's because they're so good. Don't worry, the pasta is on my list, though! The Candied Jalapeño burger is my go-to. Fear not, fellow Minnesotans, while it has a kick, it's not uncomfortably hot. If you don't get truffle fries, you're missing out. This is a rare restaurant that crushes dine-in and takeout. It's actually my go-to place to get takeout, because they're so fast and always consistent. Thanks, Sarah and Mad Capper team. You took a Stillwater staple and elevated it.

Lauren L.

Yelp
I was surprised at how good the food was. I expected basic bar food and was delighted with true gastro pub quality. Make sure to check this place out when visiting Stillwater!!

Ava C.

Yelp
I went to Mad Capper Saloon & Eatery on a particular busy Saturday evening with one other person. We asked for a table and we're told it would be a 40 minute wait. We decided to sit at the bar to wait for a table to open up. We chose to come to Mad Capper because it was a location in our Pub Pass and because of this we got a free beer. The Pub Pass only applied to the tap list. We got our beers quickly but couldn't find any seats at the bar for a bit as it was so busy. A couple tables opened up and after 10 minutes of them being open we decided to sit at a table on our own accord. The beer was fine but it was not anything they made. We both ordered the Wagyu burger and it came out quickly! The patty is quite thick so if that is something you do not enjoy do not order this. The burger was really juicy and the sauce was a nice addition! Other than issues with getting a table out waitress was very nice and attentive. This place had a good burger and was a fun, busy atmosphere in a good part of downtown Stillwater. Just a heads up you may need to wait for your table.

Rod S.

Yelp
Was intrigued to see they make their own pasta daily, so we gave this a shot. It also had caught my eye when we walked by the day earlier that they had a Tommy Shelby/Peaky Blinders mannequin out front. We had the cajun chicken alfredo and the chicken bacon linguine. Started with meatball appetizer and they were great. Pastas were great. Not entirely sold that mine was made today but hers seemed freshly made.

Tony T.

Yelp
The beer selection was small, what they had was was really good. Had the candied jalapeños burger. It was nothing short of amazing. The ingredients complimented each other very well. Burger was cooked to perfection just enough char on the outside. Wait staff was very friendly and tentative to our needs. Thank you Will visit again

Mary B.

Yelp
We enjoyed our dinner at MC tonight October 26,2022. Long time Stillwater residents. Received VIP invite on my phone. Thats what brought us in. We ordered the pasta meals. Buy one Get one free. He had pasta with red sauce and meatball cut up. I had the Cheese Tortellini Fettuccine Alfredo. Both were excellent. Very tasty and very rich. YUM. A cocktail or 2 and we were outta there with tip for about $35. The pasta is overpriced at $19 and $24 as pasta is (was) cheap but I know nothing is really cheap nowaday. BUT with the VIP special brought it down to a reasonable price. My cocktail had a good vodka pour. I like that. I won't go back to a place if you can't taste the alcohol. Wait staff all were very good, friendly, smiley and knowledgeable. WE WILL BE BACK. AFTER ALL I HAVE SEVERAL MORE 2 for 1 coupons. Highly recommend.

Lizzy B.

Yelp
Right off the bat the hostess was very nice and helpful with getting a table very during busy time. The ambiance was nice and seems like a good place to just grab drinks but we got food. The chicken pesto sandwich was 9/10 wish it had more chicken The house salad is good too.

Sydney Z.

Yelp
Great food and fine service, prices are a little more spending than some other places. Yummy Italian nachos! Comes to haunt later, but soo worth it.

Rachel B.

Yelp
We had 2 cocktails and shared the French onion soup and BLT sandwich. The cocktails were amazing! As a former mixologist I can attest these are well thought out and balanced. The fries are McDonald's dupes and the BLT was great with the avocado add on. The French onion soup was out of this world, piping hot and packed with flavor. This will be a regular stop for us whenever we are in Stillwater.

Amy J.

Yelp
This was in our Pub pass and it wouldn't be something we would normally stop at but we are determined to get all the stamps LOL. It is in the heart of downtown Stillwater. Very unique and inside an old building that definitely has charm! They had a decent size tap menu and also some food. We got the spinach artichoke dip and it was AMAZING! It was so creamy and full of flavor. Servers and bartender was friendly. We would definitely stop back for drinks and some apps!

Ericka B.

Yelp
Nice bar right on the main street. We went here to watch a badger game on a Saturday and grab some food before going to a class. They were pretty busy, but our waitress was able to check in on us pretty regularly. First, we ordered a couple of beers, and I love that you can get smaller pours than a full pint glass. For food, I had the chicken sandwich with a side salad. It was a standard chicken sandwich with cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, & onion and came with a side of bbq sauce. I ordered the honey dijon dressing for my salad, and this was the way to go for a dressing for the chicken, definitely recommend. Only other comment is that the bun was a little soggy from the chicken or tomatoes, not quite sure which, but otherwise pretty good. Everyone else in the group seemed to like their food as well. Good place to go to watch a game!

Tracee T.

Yelp
Came here with friends and sat at the bar. We ordered dry rub wings and chili. The wings were good but SUPER salty! Thankfully the bartender was an excellent server and kept the drinks coming. The chili was average. We miss the free popcorn pre-covid. Service was good, food ok and the company made it a great time.

Tim S.

Yelp
Wow, such a great surprise. The Mad Capper has amazing Italian food! We enjoyed the calamari (cooked perfectly). Also had the spaghetti which came with shrimp and a nice creamy red sauce. So good. A little spendy, but we really liked it. All fresh pasta and homemade sauces. I will definitely go again.

Kelly W.

Yelp
10 stars all the way. Home made pasta has never looked or tasted better. Can't wait to come back.

Zachary C.

Yelp
Sat down at the end of the bar, and that was the extent of our experience at Mad Capper. The place wasn't busy, the bartender saw us and after 10 minutes of NO ONE even acknowledging us, we left. As a local, this is very unfortunate for a downtown restaurant. I'm not mad, just very disappointed. We walked across the street to Brick & Bourbon and they had no problem taking our money. Please do better.

Cathy J.

Yelp
This was my second visit to Mad Capper. There were four of us and we went for lunch and ended up staying for about 3 hours! It wasn't busy so we were able to chat with our awesome server, Chelsea and one of the bartenders, Angelo. Both of them were absolutely delightful and made our experience one to remember. Three of us had the Mad Capper Burger which was delicious and perfectly prepared. One of us had the Wine Burger which she also loved. They have a good wine, beer, and cocktail list as well. This is such a charming restaurant in the heart of downtown Stillwater. We will definitely be returning to try out more menu items. (We watched other dishes go by us to be served to others and they looked - and smelled - wonderful!!)

Kiley J.

Yelp
The new menu with Italian is amazing! Definitely recommend it! Tried both the spaghetti and gnochetti sardi and they were delicious! Portion size is on smaller side for the pasta but it was plenty for me.

Rich F.

Yelp
Okay. Quiet on a Saturday afternoon, though the streets were crawling with people. I did not have food. Just had a beer. Nice place to get away from the crowds. Nice staff.

Lisa F.

Yelp
Solid classic bar and grill, right on the main drag in downtown Stillwater. INTERESTING TAPS! Like seriously, they had two Belgian ales I haven't seen anywhere else, and good variety apart from that (so NOT two dozen IPAs). Had the Friday fish fry special and it was awesome, in the past I've had burgers and sandwiches, and I've always enjoyed the meals. Was able to steal a few tots from my kids so I can confirm that both were crispy and delicious. I definitely recommend checking it out!

K D.

Yelp
Omg...the brussel sprouts are seriously fabulous! Love, love, loved them!! Also had the Chicken Apple Walnut Salad. Great flavor. The vinagrette was excellent! Also had an awesome hot drink called the Turtle. Service was great! The only issue w the parking. Even on a weekday in Jan, I had to walk 2 blocks. Many sidewalks in downtown were not even shoveled. But this place is The Best!

Richard H.

Yelp
The small plates are great as are the specials and the staff is friendly. They should carry non alcohol wine and more non alcohol beer options.

Lorraine N.

Yelp
Bluuuuuuuuuuuuueeeee--oh so lonesome for you. I am giving this place five stars based pretty much around their bleu cheese dressing. I would eat that on pretty much anything. It is (dare i say) the best I've ever had. They have Guinness on nitro. The the ginger in the little ginger is too sweet for my taste. I like a stronger whiskey taste and that is why i order short. The fried cod is heavenly and has a crispy crunchy coating. The bartender is super nice. I'm all over this local place and will return asap.

Suz C.

Yelp
Pricey, terrible atmosphere. Locals refuse to go here anymore since new owners took it over. Used to be the go to place.

Ra J.

Yelp
New owners and format September 2021. Upscale menu from previous beer and burgers. We enjoyed one of their in-house pasta dishes and a chicken sandwich. Food was good and service attentive. We will be back.

Ambria U.

Yelp
Compliments to the chef as everything they make is fantastic. Service is lovely as well. Alfredo was super helpful and kind and just offered an overall lovely experience. The place itself is super chill but also adds a touch of elegance. Can't wait to come back for lunch sometime.

Sarah B.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that the food was fantastic! But, the place, especially the staff, have much to be desired. Our waitress was fantastic, but the other lady was awful. Terrible attitude problem and proceeded to drink at the bar when her shift was over. Not professional. And the bartender was cocky and rude. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

S E.

Yelp
Great service and good food! A little more upscale dive bar feel. Their homemade pasta is great and the truffle fries were also a hit.

Ellen M.

Yelp
Service was friendly and fast. I ordered the Charlie Burger cooked my way and with my toppings. Fresh and very good, although a bit over char broiled that it overtook the flavor of the meat. Fries are extra, and are nice size. Atmosphere of the "new" Mad Capper is much nicer than the original. Burger, fries and coke - $$. Everything is over priced these days.

Sarah K.

Yelp
Old Mad Capper was a great townie joint. New Mad Capper is fine- but over priced. I get that they are trying to be hip- but not every place can be the same and others do it better downtown.
