Madison Sourdough

My kids and grandkids had lunch here today and it is much more than a bread bakery. So much more, and all really good. The outside is pretty nondescript, but inside it is warm and inviting. The bakery case is filled with lots of yummy treats and the menu board has something for every taste, all freshly made. The Egg Salad has a Pesto addition which is really good, and all the other dishes were beyond good. The fruit was super fresh and very tasty. There are two small cozy dining areas. One has a window into the bakery area and the grandkids enjoyed watching the pastry chef work her magic. Parking is in the street or the small adjacent parking lot. While the location is accessible, the dining areas are a bit tight for a wheelchair. However, those at the tables would be happy to make room as needed.

Everything was absolutely perfect. Every bite we took was bursting with flavor, but this place didn’t just fill our stomachs—it warmed our hearts, too. Full points for greeting their furry friends at the door with water, and huge applause for the wonderful staff who care for all those beautiful plants. The open kitchen detail takes the experience to another level. Kudos to everyone involved!

Very cozy and cutesy place. Will update the review whenever I try their homemade bread but we got brunch (croque madam & roasted beef sandwich) and a carrot cake for dessert and everything was fresh and delicious.

Update: They have not attempted to reach out to us. All they seem to do is ignore and only thank people who say positive things about them. We’re not going to you guys again. We ordered a $60 cake for my sister’s birthday, and unfortunately, it was handled poorly. When we removed the cake out of its flimsy box, we saw the sides were damaged. The staff packaged it away from the counter, so we couldn’t see how it was being prepared. While the cake itself tasted okay, the packaging was terrible. If anyone else has received a cake in this condition, I encourage you to leave a review so they can improve their packaging process. One of my sisters used to work in the Whole Foods bakery, and they switched from boxes to plastic containers after customers had similar issues. For the price we paid, we definitely deserve a partial refund.

Good toast, liked the bacon jam (special) omelette. Went on Saturday and there was a long line, but it went quick and there was a table waiting for us. Cake!

Probably the best place in town for classic airy sourdough bread. Definitely scratches that itch of when I need solid Miche or a baguette. The pepitas polentas bread is very very good too, it’s not grainy at all, like you might expect from polenta but has a luscious interior. I wasn’t a huge fan of the other grain breads, I thought the loaves with flax felt overseeded. The breakfast is also solid, but some of the options do sound better on paper than in execution. Overall I’d say go for the classics here and you will be very happy.

Excellent service and atmosphere. I have been twice in the past two days—both breakfast and lunch are fabulous. Stand out croissants and dessert. A little expensive for the area but (I think) worth it!

I love everything about this place except the ordering process. Time it wrong and there are going to be 15-20 people in line. So. Why the 5 stars? First. The service at the counter and delivery to your table is great. So despite the line up and order it's good. The outside seating means dog friendly. And the servers bring these squash or sweet potato dog treats my Roxie goes crazy for. But for me it's always about the food. I won't say that their croissant based breakfast sandwich has the best croissant I have EVER had. It isn't. But. I don't live off of the Champs Elysees in Paris so I and you will have to "settle" for the second best croissants ever. Added to this bakery delight is an egg and cheese based concoction that I, as my household's resident chef won't dare to try and replicate. The side salad is a perfect start to the day. A crown jewel of Madison. Practically perfect.

Food is alright here, but the star is the bread for sure-- I think you can get a loaf for $6-7 which is for sure pricier than the cheapest sandwich loaf at the grocery store, but pretty reasonable for a bakery loaf that tastes phenomenal. I've had brunch in person here before, and I got the shakshuka while my partner got a turkey sandwich. Shakshuka (6/10): dish was just ok, it was served with untoasted bread (which is my brunch pet peeve tbh) and the eggs were a touch overcooked (I like mine runny); eggs were served over a slaw which was kind of strange in my experience with shakshuka Turkey Sandwich (6.5/10): tasted alright, was just a basic turkey sandwich, a tad under-seasoned but tasted very fresh, can't complain too much about it More recently, we got takeout brunch: Biscuits + Gravy (7/10): yumm, I'd say pretty standard biscuits and gravy, my only complaint was that the sausage in the gravy was a bit hard and dry which was strange for sausage, good level of flavor otherwise not much to critique but also not much to boast about Grits w/ Pimento Cheese (7.5/10): I love cheesy grits !! Eggs were nicely cooked this time, would've liked some sort of protein or crunch just to break up the creaminess of the grits n cheese, but alas, great flavor anyway I've also gotten coffee here before, but it has been pretty bad, I'd likely get my coffee elsewhere before coming here for bread/food. Service has always been friendly and rather quick-- you order at the counter, and they bring you food if you're eating in. Vibes inside the store are nice and peaceful, lots of seating inside and lovely to sit outside if the weather is nice :)

Some of the best pastries in Madison! Highly recommend the iced latte with oat milk, a chocolate croissant, and enjoying breakfast at their outdoor seating area. It was busy but the staff is efficient so the line moved quickly. After we ordered at the counter we were lucky that someone was leaving so I grabbed their table outside. The outdoor space has a cozy feel with trees lining the sidewalk, sunshine and a welcoming atmosphere. I brought my dog and she loved the dog water bowl. They are right on Willy Street so during certain hours I could see parking being tough but I was able to score a street parking spot right in front. A great go-to place in Madison or a must stop for visitors.

I had a raspberry pastry that was seasonal. I loved every bite. It was very hard to decide what to get since all the croissants and stuff looked amazing. The staff was very friendly and helped me choose. I'd definitely go back!

You come in for the breads (my favorite is the boule) and stay for the coffee, soup, friendly service, and cozy ambience...it always smells delicious, too. Is your mouth watering yet?

Madison Sourdough is a must stop. Their pastries, food, and coffee are really tasty. Their cakes are as well. Service is always fast and they're happy to answer questions. Nice interior with a nice patio space.

We tried this place in August '23 when we were passing through Madison and I've thought about it countless times since. Not only is the bread out of this world but they have the best vanilla syrup I've ever tasted. I even mentioned it to the friendly gal working at the front counter because I needed to know where they got it from-- it turns out that they make it in house! Fast forward to a week ago- I actually made it back to Madison and unluckily was just on the right side of food poisoning (from somewhere else!) so I had to bypass all of their delicious sandwiches and just stick to a thick toasty slice of sourdough bread with butter and jam. Let me tell you, this was an excellent consolation prize! And the vanilla syrup is just as good as before. I will pine for them until my next trip to Madison.

great brunch spot with super yummy bread! I've come here twice since posting this review - the first time I dined in which was a great experience. there was a line which extended out the door but it moved decently quickly. i ordered the ranchero pork sandwich, the almond croissant and a lavender lime spritz(?). once you order, it's pretty much open seating wherever you'd like. the food was prepared quickly and served to us in no time. i enjoyed the pork sandwich but the bread did end up getting soggy from all the sauce so just be mindful of that if you order it. the almond croissant was SO DELICIOUS, 10/10 would recommend. the second time i ordered online and got the croque madame along with the almond croissant again. the croque madame seemed good initially but i felt like the sauce was a bit too poignant/sharp for my liking. i couldn't really eat half of the bread because of all the sauce on it. other than that, the salad was good as well as the almond croissant! would likely come back again in the future to try out some of their other dishes

I ordered the patissier's breakfast which came with a butter croissant, two over easy eggs, blackberry jam, butter and a side salad. The croissant was so good! Flaky and buttery. I enjoyed the jam and butter as well. My eggs were slightly undercooked with some runny whites but otherwise, I enjoyed my meal and will be back!

I was there to pick up a birthday cake. Orange Cardamom flavor was a nice and different flavor. I loved the flavor. Cake as such could have been softer. While there I picked up my breakfast. Italian beef sandwich and curried tomato bisque were both good dishes. Egyptian Dukkah toast was good, but could have been more flavorful. Msco sandwich bread crust was a bit too hard for me. Rosemary Ginger pear pie was good. It was a sweet and savory pie flavor which was very different.

This is a great upbeat craft bakery that did a fine job with my avocado toast. As an amateur baker l recognize the care and creativity that goes into making great breads, and this place 'rises' to the challenge. Pun intended.

This quick (of long if preferred;) breakfast spot is truly perfect. Everything from the craft and care of the fresh sourdough bread, to the coffee, eggs, and atmosphere- just fantastic. They have both indoor and outdoor seating, that's great for a calm and casual brunch with friends or family. Don't miss the chance to enjoy the front patio during fall- a perfect, slow, autumn brunch- AMAZING fall pastries!

Madison Sourdough looked amazing from the photos, so I had high hopes. I love a good sourdough bread. My boyfriend had the croque Madame, I had the Egyptian dukkah toast, and we shared the pecan pie toast for desert. The best thing out of these was the croque Madame, but there was not much competition. The Egyptian dukkah toast was salty, but nothing compared to the pecan pie toast. The pecan pie toast was SO salty that we could not even eat it. I ended up throwing 80% of the toast away because it was inedible from how overly salty it was. Additionally, I paid too much for a small cup of orange juice that was "fresh" but tasted like it was from concentrate. Lastly, the toast did not have a strong taste of sourdough. Overall, disappointing.

I've been going to Madison Sourdough for years for breakfast and their wonderful baked products and desserts/pastries. The best thing that has happened there lately is I chose it for a first "Match" breakfast date. She enjoyed the food and the company. We went back a year later to celebrate. If Madison Sourdough doesn't create magic for you their baked goods and breakfasts and lunches will certainly brighten your day.

We got their baguette, signature sourdough batard, carrot cake and roast beef sandwich. I would say their breads are good but too crunchy to the point it is hard to eat. The roast beef sandwich was delicious but I wished they would toast it. Then again, their breads were too rustic and crunchy. Toasting it would be hard to consume and enjoy the sandwich. Now, moving for the desserts, the carrot cake was good and not overly sweet. Wished it had some nuts, raisins and carrots inside the cake. Overall, it has a lot of potentials, just wish the breads were not too crunchy.

Came here to say what a great place. Had a coffee, classic breakfast sandwich and a blueberry danish. That danish was fantastic, had a custard like topping. Staff was warm and friendly, the space was cute inside and out (they had outdoor seating). I want to go back right now :)

Amazing bread! Great spot on Williamson tucked away in a grove of trees. Very easy to order online & pick up ready (self-serve). Inside is clean with lots of windows and a nice area to sit inside or outside. Really friendly staff!

This spot appears to be super popular during the weekend, but when I popped in for a late lunch on Monday, it was actually pretty quiet. I got a turkey sandwich which was pretty mediocre. Also wasn't a fan of the matcha latte, it was too sweet for me. But the saving grace was the oatmeal cookie - perfectly soft and chewy.

unexpected delight! lovely bakery with great service and cute space. but the food was the highlight: the Egyptian dukkah was incredible, the chocolate chip was super tasty and my bf got the kouign amann which was also i also tried their lavender lime spritzer which was very refreshing. sad i am only visiting and can frequent this spot more often.

Madison sourdough is hands down the best bakery in Madison. I've been a loyal customer for years because of their delicious bread and pastries (including the cheese twists ). They made the wedding cakes for our wedding last week and they were so good, we ended up running out of cake because so many guests came back for seconds! Not only were the cakes delicious, but beautifully presented. I cannot recommend this place enough.

This place is fantastic. Their breads are all sourdough, but they're so creative and different that you'll forget they're all the same "style". The polenta batard especially is great and pretty reasonably priced. Then we have the pastries, cakes and pies. The pies are always delicious and deep dish! The cakes are occasionally not quite perfect - some of the flavors I don't care for but there are always interesting ones to choose from and the specials are usually killer. The pastries and food from their kitchen are great too, particularly love the chocolate cherry almond croissant! They recently started some indoor dining in a back room too, and when the weather is nice the patio is always a good choice. I go here very often, almost weekly and have never been let down.

Go when your stuffed, go when your hungry. You'll always be satisfied at Madison Sourdough. The pastries are to die for. I get a chocolate croissant every time. The savory galette also goes hard. The food can get pricey. It's yummy but not as one of a kind delicious as their baked goods. Personally I'm intimidated by their artisanal bread (like how can something so gorgeous be eaten), so I haven't tried it but the pastries have a lower barrier to entry. Coffee and lattes are decent, too!

After dealing with trying to find parking and standing in line for 35 min I was able to get a cake, they only had a few left so I got hazelnut praline and was very disappointed! It had coffee in it! When I asked them what type a cake it was they said hazelnut praline never saying it had coffee in it. $45 for a 6in cake that can't be eaten. The coffee was overpowering and won't have to worry about parking or lines, I won't be going back :(

Everything was amazing. Beyond irritated people took seating before ordering. Been to many counter service establishments where they post you are not allowed to claim a seat till order is placed. They should consider this as I watched a family with two small children ask for to go boxes for full plates as I watched rude college kids claim a table before they ordered when the family could have enjoyed a meal with their kids. Please consider making this change when you do not have significant seating.

Got there on a Saturday morning, and there was a line out the door. Rightfully so. It was delicious. Best crossiants, bread, and avocado toast imaginable.

Madison Sourdough was fantastic! Everything from the food, obviously the sourdough, the service and even the merch was perfect. We were telling all our family in Wisconsin about it. I hope we can come back one day if we visit Wisconsin again.

Nice Saturday brunch with the fam and puppy on the patio. We enjoyed a couple lattes and breakfast sandwiches! I had the madam breakfast sandwich with gruyere, dijon, egg, and ham. It was melty and delicious on a flaky croissant. Perfect! We also enjoyed a salad and the biscuits and gravy.

I like bread, and Madison Sourdough has gooodddd bread. Awesome spot to pick up some pastries, or grab a casual brunch. We tried a few brunch items, both of which were great. The Eggs Diablo was full of flavor, and the avocado toast was seriously thick. We also brought home a chocolate almond croissant to try later and...wow it was truly the best of both worlds. They're not joking around here.

Great bread and service here. I ordered a blackberry toast and it was so delicious. They have a sweet little outdoor dining area. Took a 7 wonder bread to go and the whole family loved it. I confess I also bought a chocolate espresso cookie for myself and the counter guy threw another one in (for free!) so I was able to share. Nice coffee flavor so I will definitely be back the next time I'm in town!

Cute area to sit outside. Delicious omelet! Bread was so good. The pastries looked delicious- French style. Eco conscious by using real plates and glasses as well as compostable straws.

Being big fans of Batch Bakehouse down Willy Street we had not wandered down here to try the baked goods at Sourdough. We finally stopped on our way home from a bike ride. The almond croissant and the almond chocolate croissant were both very good - a bit heavier than others we like locally. Plenty of filling. We also bought a non-sourdough loaf - I think it was a country bread with flaxseed and ? It was good but the crust was almost tough - it took a lot to chew it. I am guessing some like that but not me. Overall we will definitely return since there are plenty of other tempting pastry items we need to try!

The service is wonderful. The food is top notch. The atmosphere is pretty uniques as well. I feel like I'm at home when I go to MSD.

My daughter's birthday cake was amazingly delicious. I found the perfect place for celebrations! It was decadent --a perfect amount of chocolate, raspberries and sweetness. The humor, warming knife suggestion and friendliness was just extra wow!

noms: yummy places to eat in Madison, Wisonson. brunch at Madison Sourdough and omg wowwww so delicious. We the biscuits and gravy, croque madame, turkey sandwich and the El Diablo sandwich. I also got a loaf of their country sourdough bread and a chocolate almond croissant to go this was by far one of the best bread experiences I've had in such a long time. All of the food was absolutely fantastic!

An all time fav of ours. My husband and I ate here together on the morning of our wedding even!! 7-wonder batard is a treat if you're there on Wednesday!

We heard great things about Madison Sourdough, from our wedding planner, when we were scrambling to have a wedding cake made. We reached out to MS for our wedding cake after seeing our date was available on their website. The process to get the cake started was not very intuitive. We decided to drive from Milwaukee to go in person and get some assistance in ordering and pay in advance. The gentlemen at the desk was pretty confused, disinterested when we needed help to order and seemed very blasé about trying to find us answers. He simply pointed across the room at some of the sliced cakes on display and said "what you see is it". After asking if we could place a down payment for the cake the gentlemen simply said he didn't know what to do and can ask the cake decorator, who luckily for us, happened to be in at that time. We observed the gentleman walking to the back and talking to a lady, we assumed was the decorator. She did not come to the front to talk to us - not even a glance when we saw the gentleman return. He told us we had to take care of this online or over the phone. The decorator did not even offer to come speak with us. We were essentially sent away with no answers. I am sure their food is great, but it was a pretty upsetting experience from willing customers to be turned away with no answers.

LOVE THIS PLACE I've been coming here for their breads and they're so good/fresh. They have a nice outdoor patio and it's always packed on the Sundays I've gone, so I recommend checking it out!!

Got the breakfast sandwich with a salad and the wife got the quiche with a salad. Both meals were very good. We sat outside with the little birds playing around is. It was a great atmosphere. The prices were a little high but not high enough to scare you away. The latte was a typical European latte, nothing like a Starbucks. Good to me as I didn't want a sweet drink. It was a treat but I take my coffee black. The tea was very good also.

Popped in for a quick sweet snack after lunch. We got the chocolate chip cookie, chocolate mocha cookie, and the gingerbread cookie. The gingerbread cookie (which the very sweet employee threw in for free) was by far the best. Had a great molasses flavor and was super moist. The other were soft but pretty bland in flavor. Would love to try out the other items. Everything in the dessert case was huge!

We stopped by on a trip through Madison around 2pm for a late morning breakfast sandwich and coffee. This totally hit the spot. It is a cute shop with friendly staff and fresh breads, cakes, pies and breakfast sandwich options. Currently no seating available, only take out. I had a biscuit with jam and butter. It was flaky and buttery which I loved! My husband had a madame breakfast sandwich. They were out of the croissant but they let him get a biscuit instead. I also had a tasty cappuccino. We would stop by again on our way through town. May be dangerous to live too close to the place because all the bread looks amazing.

Madison Sourdough is THEE place to go when visiting. I've been so many times I can't believe I haven't left a review. Whether you visit their storefront over on Willy St. or get some of their pastries from the MANY cafes around Madison that have their stuff, you won't be disappointed. Sunday brunch? Check. Quick coffee? Check. Heck, even lunch. I've never been let down by any of their baked goods or lunch options and absolutely adore their chocolate croissants. Once you've had a Madison Sourdough croissant, you literally can not have another croissant ever again without wishing it was from MSCO. They have a wide variety of coffee syrups to choose from, plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and fast service. There are plenty of options to choose from but get there early -- things go extra fast on weekend mornings. Looking forward to going again this weekend!

Delicious baked goods and the best FOH staff!! They were so kind and hooked us up with some free bread. Shoutout to the two cool guys working in the afternoon on 1/5/23 (wish I knew their names). Amazing staff, amazing bakery

Awesome real sourdough bread! And excellent cakes and cookies! Delicious breakfast as well very fresh and the greens that come with breakfast sandwiches are crisp and have an awesome dressing! Truly a must visit if your into fresh hearty foods!

Madison Sourdough is a great stop for lunch or a quick snack. Their breads are fresh made in house and if you order a loaf to go, they can slice it for you. My favorite is the savory Pepitas Polenta loaf! Their lunch and brunch options are all pretty solid, but their baked goods are amazing. The macarons and cakes are well made and never too sweet. I usually stop in for a cappuccino and sweet treat when meeting up with friends or working on the computer. They have 2 extra seating areas aside from their main area if you are looking for a quieter seat. Service is always prompt and friendly! Pre-Covid, Madison Sourdough would offer baking classes. I took the macaron class and it was nice to learn step by step how to make a successful macaron.

Such a great place for breakfast! Plenty of seating options - intimate for small groups but has the capacity to seat larger ones as well. Self-serve. Busy on a 10am Saturday morning, but food was served quick. The menu board is tiny to read but they do have handheld ones to browse. All of their desserts looked stunning! I had a chai macaron which was disappointing. It needed more filling to even out the filling to cookie ratio. The cookie was chewy, not light by any means. I had the ham and cheddar omelet with a side salad! I would order this again. My friend ordered the blueberry toast and I am eager to try this next time I come here.

My first time going here and I have to say that they have a very nice set-up for social distancing. You are able to order and they have an adjoining room you can wait for your food in. I bought a variety of savory and sweet baked goods. One was the Drew sandwich and they accommodated my request for it to be served on a croissant rather than Italian bread. It was $12 which is a little pricey for a breakfast sandwich in my opinion, but it did come with a small side salad and was a large enough portion. I will definitely be back to try the rest of their offerings! Edit: My sister had the chocolate espresso cake and this is what she had to say: "Could hardly taste the espresso, the frosting was really stiff, there was so much caramel that kind of just pooled at the bottom, and idk it was just a really basic chocolate cake with no complexity." I won't be deducting any stars for this since I enjoyed my order, but just a heads up!
