Make-Your-Own Dosa Spot Madras Dosa Co. Is Headed for Harvard - Eater Boston

"The dosa enthusiasts behind the Seaport’s fast-casual spot Madras Dosa Co. are headed to Harvard. The team has signed a lease on a new location in Harvard Square at 22 Eliot Street, near John F. Kennedy Street, and is aiming to open either by the end of December or in January, the company confirmed in an email. Similar to the Seaport shop, diners at the new location can expect a menu chock full of dosas, the South Indian staple of thin lentil crepes, and can choose their own fillings from a lineup that includes lamb, chicken, green chiles, and masala-flavored Lay’s potato chips. The campus outpost is aiming to cater to a late-night crowd and stay open seven days per week, 11 to 3 a.m., according to information listed on a Cambridge licensing application." - Erika Adams

Google
A small south Indian food restaurant in Harvard university campus. Limited seating area. We ordered dosa and samosa both were good. Its self service there. I don't recall the price but i think was slightly on the expensive side. They don't give free water (usually restaurants in US provide free water). No additional chutney or sambhar, you have to purchase the same. Food quality good though and you won't miss Indian food while in US :)

Not a good experience at all. The food was not very appetizing. They charge $5 for the tea which is unheard of, from a machine too? Thats ripping people off. My friend ordered lamb keema and rice and it looked the most bland, unappetizing, food that was absolutely horrible. He said it tasted the same as well. At least make it prettier. You advertise for something, have it. If not, dont. I wouldn’t eat here again. Tea was good but for the price, no. Dosa- average. Indian food is supposed to be a delicacy. For a place to be in Harvard square and serving this? Thats sad.

My sisters and I greatly enjoyed our dosas!!! The spicy potato canteen sandwich we did not realize would have cheese so we didn’t try that item even though we ordered it and paid for it. Service was excellent though!

Google
I visited Madras Dosa Cafe today and had the masala dosa with chicken and samosa chaat—both were absolutely delicious! The dosa was perfectly crispy, the filling was flavorful, and the samosa chaat had a great balance of spices and textures. We also spoke with Nayan, one of the employees, and he was super friendly. The service was great, making the whole experience even better. Highly recommend this place for authentic South Indian flavors!

Google
Have not rated “atmosphere “ as we ordered take-out. The paneer veg sandwich had all the right flavors. Wish they would offer half sandwich, to help those on portion controlled eating. The dosa, chutney had the right level of flavoring. Of course getting dosa to go is not the best option but their attention to detail on the packaging is awesome. Re-ordered more food over the weekend. Buy 1 get 1 free options as well. Love the packaging and presentation. I wish I could tag other restaurant owners, to copy this amazing packaging and presentation. Taste was awesome!!!!!

Super Fast. Good Food. Decent Menu. Reasonable. Limited Seating for 10-12 people

We came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday. We ordered dahi puri which was good, dosa which was fresh and vada which was perfect. They had masala limca and mango lassi. The quality was great but the quantity of sambhar on the side was less, we had to order them separately as well. Canteen sandwich was loaded and pani puri was fine too. Food was not very spicy and everyone enjoyed it. The sitting area is limited and we shared our table with someone which was a tad bit inconvenient. Overall good place.

Google
This restaurant satisfied every South Indian craving I had. Their sambar is slightly sweeter than the usual Madras style, but their chutneys were delicious, the idlies were soft, and the dosa was absolutely wonderful. Be sure to check this place out if you're in town.

Yelp
The dosa is way bigger than I expected! Definitely shareable. I got it with lamb, spicy potatoes, and pineapple. The pineapple is a sweet and tangy chunky sauce that balances the savory spice of the other elements well. Each element, including the three dipping sauces, has so much complex flavor. It doesn't feel cheap at $17 for a wrap with three fillings, but the quantity and quality of the fillings are worth it. It feels authentic to a degree that's hard to find elsewhere. As a heads up, the lamb was quite spicy, much spicier than the spicy potatoes. Be careful and ask for help ordering if you can't handle spice!

Yelp
Really enjoyed my dinner here at Madras Dosa in Cambridge. This is a casual style restaurant where you order at the counter and your food is ready in just a couple of minutes. I ordered a Dosa which seems to be the specialty item here. You get to choose your own toppings inside. They actually had a suggestion for what to put so I went with that--spicy potatoes, cheese, and onions. I also got beef. The portion is huge and I left feeling very full. The dosa itself and all the sauces it came with were very flavorful. It's right in the heart of Harvard Square so parking is either street (if you're lucky) or a nearby garage. All in all I really enjoyed my experience here and I will be back!

Yelp
I was a bit confused when I first walked in because I didn't know what the dosa came with already and what a dosa is typically filled with. So I just went with their recommendations of onions, potatoes, cheese, and chicken. It was very delicious. Not cheap though but I will say that the dosa is large which offsets the expensive cost. The three sauces are all delicious but I have no idea what each of the three sauces are. All have some sort of spice and one of the red sauces was very thick and sweet which I enjoyed. The dosa itself has a soft outer layer and a flavorful interior. Will definitely be back again because it tasted great!

Yelp
The hottest new place in town. If you get the karam podi spice, be prepared for HEAT! They have a milder version called gunpowder. As someone who LOVES fiery foods, even I regretted opting for the spiciest option. The dosas were HUGE and were so filling. I liked how you can easily customize your order. I ordered one dosa with the paneer, karam podi, onions, and potatoes and had plenty of leftovers. The dipping sauces that come with the dosa were delicious as well. The mango lassi was the perfect sweet accompaniment to quell my burning tastes buds. I'd definitely check it out again! When you add ingredients to the dosa, it can get pricey real quick.

Yelp
Came here at the recommendation of friends. Overall, food tasted good but definitely wish there was more substance for the price. It's not expensive, but on the slight pricier side for what you get. We got dosas with spicy podi and potatoes. The gunpowder is definitely enough to take down the most experienced in spice, but I loved the potato dosa. We also got the chickpea chaat, idly (a little sour) and pani puri (yum). Highly recommend the mango lassi as well.

Yelp
Pretty decent, but doesn't always hit the spot for me on flavors or textures. For example, every time I've ordered chaat, it's basically a soup. Adding an extra star for being indian food in the Boston area--it's rough out here.

Payal R.

Yelp
Definitely the best dosa I've had in the Boston area. It was the right amount of crispy and soft. I personally also really like the sambhar and the two chutneys. Will definitely be coming back.

Reagan R.

Yelp
I ordered pani puri, and it had no chickpeas or potatoes inside. It was just some onions and yogurt and chaat masala. Very disappointing.

Yelp
One of the best places to eat in Harvard Square. Authentic Indian street food, reasonable prices, served quickly.

Brian G.

Yelp
Great little hole in the wall spot. Think Mexican delivery but with Indian flavors. Order at the counter and take out or maybe find a table (maybe room for 14 people to sit). Food was flavorful and satisfying. We ordered a dosa (think fried burrito) with lamb, spicy potato and paneer. It was good. We also got the aloo tikki chaat which was delicious! If you are looking for a new spin on Indian, or at least how it's delivered, I recommend.

Yelp
This is my go to dosa place in Cambridge. I've also eaten at their Seaport joint but prefer the Cambridge one. I don't feel their quality is consistent across the 2 branches, with the Cambridge joint's food having the superior taste. It's a no frills eatery offering dosa, idli, uttapam, several types of chaat, pav bhaji, and pulav. I've tried pretty much everything on their menu and love their aloo tikki and dahi puri. For a self service place, it's a tad bit on the pricier side. But food is tasty and hygienic and therefore I am okay to pay the premium and keep returning here. Special mention to their ginger chutney - it's absolutely delicious!!

Stephen C.

Yelp
Awesome authentic food!! Dosa prepared right in front of you and served deliciously fresh and hot. Idli are also excellent: fluffy and filling. Kind and courteous staff.

Yelp
This place is pretty excellent, but pricy - especially since adding anything to the dosa like podi or mirchi powder costs like 3 dollars an option. However, the dosa are fresh, the chutneys actually don't suck which is a huge shock to me for all of Massachusetts. Also, they have upma on the menu that's well prepared and delicious with a spoon of coconut chutney and dunked in over-priced sambar. All in all in a city where I repeat all of the South Indian options suck, this is a diamond in the rough and I hope they are super successful, even if I question why don't I just make this at home for 10 bucks.

Yelp
Just tried this Dosa place, very good food, happy staff and varieties to pick from. Just like chipotle you can pick what you want in your Dosa. Sambar & coco chutney was great, the red chutney was bit too sweet. Papri chat was very well balanced Highly recommend this place. Finding table could be tricky, but we got one soon. Even if we were to carry & eat outside, there are many places to sit and eat.

Sara S.

Yelp
Delivery review only: I won't blame them for food arriving cold. But soggy pani puri because they stuffed the puris, soggy dosa with the masala in it, pav with the pav bhaji rolled all over it -- bad packaging for a delivery order. Couldn't even eat the puris since they were falling apart - a waste of an order. Reheating the dosa worked out and it was a tasty item, but the oil on my hands after eating was too much. Canteen sandwich - very okay. Also a lot of oil/ghee here too. Sad. Could've been a good meal.

Yelp
Super delicious! The boast Nayan was so helpful explaining about Dosa ( I never had before!) it's was so fulfilling and taste! Nayan, even came over to ask if I liked it. True hospitality!

Yelp
This place is not to be missed! Indian street food taken to gourmet heights. Their dosa pancakes are so light and crispy - and bigger than the ones I've had in LA. I had the classic Dosa with Spicy Potatoes inside and it was fabulous. So comforting. It was so good, I opted to eat it without any of the three sauces it comes with. Although, they were fine too. I sampled the chicken filling (ground chicken long simmered in a red sauce) and will order that next time I come - probably with the potatoes though as they'd be missed. A word to the wise... if you're anything but a spice heavyweight champion, do NOT order either of the "Spicy Podi" dosas. A young local man ordered one and ended up with not just a runny nose, but a *bloody* nose. Never seen that before! :-) The poor cooks were so sweetly beside themselves, checking on him, and trying to make him another dosa that was less spicy. But the freckle-faced lad wouldn't have it. He smiled and said he was going to "suffer through it" with his friends (one of whom seemed to know his way around the menu and might've been from India). The pinnacle of the meal by far was the Dahi Puri - crispy hollow balls of goodness filled with sweet yogurt, purple onion and corn. Sounds like a wacky combo, but it was ambrosia! I won't sign off before mentioning the other highlight, a side of Aloo Tikka I ordered as an afterthought. Imagine the silky mashed potatoes formed into 1/4 inch disks with a corn in masala (red) sauce filled center. And then deep fried and dusted with a savory sweet powder. Again, the sauce was redundant, I tried it and tossed it aside. These things were bliss. I, sadly, have no Indian heritage, but these cakes were redolent of the comfort that only my grandmother could've channeled through her cooking. I wanted to like the masala lassi (cilantro, garlic and yogurt drink), but my palette's not yet sophisticated enough to appreciate it, a bit too salty for me. The freshly-prepared sweet lime soda was pleasant however - be prepared for a bit of umami crouching beneath the sweet. What caused it? I have no idea! But I was feeling adventurous and loved that it also had a fresh sprig of mint floating inside the bottle. Can't wait to go back and order an array of different dishes and the Desi Hot Chocolate. Oh, and get this... they're open until 3 am. Finally! A restaurant that's sensible enough to cater to this community. So glad one's finally found us.

Yelp
Food: so many great dosa options! Also love their sandwiches and chaat Service: friendly and helpful employees Ambiance: food court/ street food vibe. Not a lot of place to sit down but not difficult to get a table.

Yelp
Tried Dosa, pavbhaji and Kheema pav. Highly recommended! Service is great and location is most convenient for anyone at Harvard thinking of eating great Indian food...

Murray M.

Yelp
The big uncertainty, that diverts its title food from the authentic taste of a Madras (now Chennai) dosa, is that you can choose a variety of ingredients as its filler, and end up with something like an all-in-one burrito. You'd taste some ingredients used in India, but not that culture's prepared food. And if you include cheese, it is sprinkled over the entire rice crepe, which after heating is soft and soggy rather than crispy to the bite. Try the dosa with spiced potato alone (maybe add just a wee bit of onion) and it may be like the dosa in Madras. The Gulab Jamun, though pricy, is on the mark and tastes very good.

Yelp
Outstanding food and drink that's open late and very convenient. Not inexpensive, but very reasonably priced for the quality. Fast casual kind of atmosphere.

Yelp
As an Indian, I can say that the dosas here are impeccable and the food quality is great. 11/10 would recommend

Yelp
I'd been to the downtown location of Madras Dosa Company before, and was excited to try the new Harvard Square location. Over the past two weeks I've eaten there twice - once in person, once through delivery.. So far I've had that Pav Bhaji, Samosa Chaat, and two of the cutlet sandwiches. The Pav Bhaji was really good, similar to pav bhaji I've had before. The Samosa chaat was excellent, most of that being down to the samosas which they add a cinnamon-like spice to (not sure which it is) that gives them a small edge over the other samoas you find around here. The "Cutlet Sandwich" in my opinion steals the show. I'm not sure the origins, if it's an established street food dish in India or (my guess) just a clever indo-american fusion the restaurant owners came up with. Either way it's AWESOME comfort food - simple sandwiches with perfectly crusty bread, one main flavor (veggie meat, paneer, potato) plus melted cheese, diced onions, indian spices and a few other ingredients. I tried the veggie meat one and loved it, but could tell a pure paneer might be even simpler and more tasty. Sure enough, the paneer sandwiched turned out to be even better- the best sandwich I've had in ages, and, in a sense, the best grilled cheese I think I've had in... my life??? Yeah, it's that good. With the sandwich, they give you a little bit of chips on the side, which are essentially ruffles like potato chips dusted with indian spice. Like the sandwich, very simple, but VERY delicious and more-ish. I'd say it's worth upgrading to a larger order unless you go with one of the many other good sides. No review of the dosa at this location yet, but I've had it at the Boston location and it was good. Not massive, and the individual add-ons can add up quickly, but well made and comes in a cool to-go container. One of the best features of Madras Dosa Co is the late hours - both this and the Boston location are open till 3 am every night. It's so rare to see any restaurants in the greatest Boston area open past 10pm, let alone actually GOOD ones. I'm excited that there's a genuinely good quality food option around for late night eats in the Cambridge area now.

Petabro A.

Yelp
Excellent menu Dosa's were among the best that I have consumed The plant based chicken dosa is very innovate. Strongle recommend it. The staff worked well as a team and provided excellent service. Madras Dosa has the potential to be the world finest South Asian Fast Casual Chain. Wish the team much success. P.S. It' sad that most reviews below three stars have been given by South Asians. Please do not be critical of your children. It could be a generational problem.

Yelp
Amazing dosa! Got the dosa with cheese and potatoes. Was great, people were very and nice overall it was a great experience!

Yelp
Good food and open late! Dosas and chutney all tasted yummy. The pricing was reasonable given the location is so close to college campuses

Yelp
some of the best indian food i've had in a really long time. i don't know what spice blend they put on their samosas, but my mouth is watering just thinking about it. excited to go back sometime soon

Yelp
great late night food option in harvard square, delicious and quick addition to the area

Sanjana K.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! I'm South Indian-American, and this is the best dosa I have had at a restaurant in the USA! The sambar was impeccable, and the masala dosa was delicious, huge, and filling, and I love that it wasn't too oily or salty. Also they use special take out boxes to keep the chutney and sambar separate from the dosa, which worked amazingly! I'm excited to try their idlis next time, I will definitely be back!

Blossom P.

Yelp
The dosas and pani puri were fantastic! The service was friendly. I'm so glad they are in Cambridge. So long low carb diet!!

Yelp
Walked by this place the other day on the way to getting dinner elsewhere with a friend and really wanted to try it! I had a few dosa places I loved back home and couldn't find anything on par since I moved to Boston. Ordered dosa for delivery. The dosa was much bigger than expected and SO good! I'll need to come in here in person next time.
