Noodle soups, street food favorites & gluten-free options

"Chef Pamika Sukla began shaking up Montreal’s relatively dormant Thai food scene in 2013 with a Plateau restaurant bearing her name. She has since opened two counters (on Milton and St-Denis) specializing in noodles. Mae Sri offers an extensive menu of soups, ranging from Boat Noodle Ayuthaya to braised beef, but Sukla’s take on Thai staple Tom Yum — with shrimp, ground pork and lots of lime — is a standout. Available for takeout or delivery via UberEats." - Holly Tousignant

"Get your fill of Thai street food-inspired favourites without worrying about any pesky traces of gluten. Mae Sri’s gluten-free dishes are clearly marked on the menu, and include pad thai, green curry, and vegan-fried rice. Both Mae Sri locations (Milton and St. Denis) are currently open for pickup and delivery." - Holly Tousignant

"In the McGill student neighbourhood on Milton Street I found Mae Sri, a casual Thai noodle counter that took over the longtime diner Place Milton and offers an excitingly affordable option for the area." - Eater Staff

"Students and other residents of the McGill Ghetto should count themselves lucky that former diner Place Milton morphed into this Thai noodle counter from Pamika Sukla (chef-owner of Pamika); Sukla swings more casual here, focusing on Thai street food and especially kuai tiao, a rice noodle soup with a rich, flavourful broth loaded with toppings from peanuts to meatballs. The long menu also includes well-worn staples like pad thai and green curry, and not all of those deliver at the same level as the kuai tiao, but the cozy, affordable spot is offering something hard to come by in Montreal — and doing it well. More, please." - Tim Forster

"From the same chef-owner as Plateau/Village resto Pamika comes this casual counter spot near McGill. While a couple of standards like pad thai and green curry figure on the menu, the focus is kuai tiao, noodle soups topped with pork, shrimp, fried garlic, coriander, and more. Big bowls of it clock in at $12 at the cheapest, making for a darn affordable lunch or dinner." - Tim Forster
