Magazine Street Po-Boy Shop Will Close After 30 Years - Eater New Orleans

"Ray Movahed, who opened Magazine Street Po-Boy and Sandwich Shop in the Garden District in 1988, will serve his final soft shell crab po-boy when he closes the restaurant at the end of this May. At 59, Movahed is retiring. He owns the building and will pass the keys over to another restaurant on June 1, though there are no details on that yet, reports NOLA.COM. For the most part, the corner po-boy shop flew under the radar as nearby Tracy’s, Mahony’s, and Parasol’s attracted most of the attention. Still, both tourists and locals consider it a steadfast place to grab fried okra and pickles, fried seafood po-boys, and muffuletta salads. The menu also includes a wider variety of vegetarian po-boys than most, including po-boys with french fries, eggplant parm, a meatless muffuletta mixture, cheese, or fried pickles." - Stephanie Carter

Great homestyle meals. Po Boys are delicious. Bread pudding pictured wasn't really as good as I hoped. Roast beef was awesome!!

Met with 7 family members in town for a wedding. Service was fairly quick and delicious. I had the Muffuletta Po Boy. It was huge and very good.

Was my first and I'm so happy that I stopped there. The food was AMAZING!!!! and you get a great portion for the price. Have some great daily speacials and a wide variety on their menu. I had the catfish platter which was one suggestion by "Tee" and it was delicious and well worth the price. Most definitely will visit again

This is a great place to get a bite to eat if your are doing the walking tour of the Garden District. The food is good, don't expect fine dining but it is wholesome and fresh. Service is good and friendly. Highly recommended.

I was planning on trying this shop based on a suggestion from a friend, and when I looked them up on Google, the closing time was shown as 4:30. It was 3:30 and I decided to walk there from my hotel. I arrived at 3:50, walked in and started reading the huge menu. I was told they were closing at 4 and the order would have to be to go (no posted hours, so they probably close when they feel like it.) Feeling rushed, I just picked a shrimp poboy and an iced tea. I wish I had more time to decided, because there was a soft shell crab po boy I would have picked instead. The sandwich was delicious, but I didn't receive the tea I ordered. Still not sure if I was charged for it...

I am on a never ending quest for the best roast beef poor boy on earth. My most recent stop was Magazine Po-Boy. I really like the building. It is old and typical of a New Orleans neighborghood joint. There is a large board with the menu to the left of the counter. Once you make up your mind, walk up the steps and order. As others have mentined, it is cash only, but there is an ATM inside. I do wish they would take credit cards for convenience, but it was not that big a deal. I ordered a roast beef and some gravy fries. Both were good, but I wasn't overwhelmed. The bread was correct, but the sandwich just seemed rather ordinary. The fries were also average. I did notice that during lunch they offer several specials, including white beans. I may have to come back and try more of those types of things since my regular plate lunch place has closed. In summary, the restaurant has the right look, but I was not impressed with the food.

It's a little hole-in-the-wall shop in picturesque neighborhood and it has great po'boys. I always stop here whenever I'm in town and get the fully dressed shrimp po'boy and sit at one of the handful of outside tables. However, Google indicates that it's closed. I hope not since I will be coming to to New Orleans in October. UPDATE 11-14-18 - I walked by in October 2018. They are definitely closed. Building is being remodeled. Maybe they will be back, but doesn't appear to be the case.

Solid place to get a rustic New Orleans meal of creole food and other specialties. Staff was friendly, the restaurant layout is simple, and the food seemed fairly priced. Food was pretty good overall.
