The Top Restaurants the Northern Catskills Near Hunter Mountain | Eater NY

"Maggie Landis has been serving up organic salads, sandwiches, pastas, and travel advice from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. since 1986, and her massive menu includes tofu scrambles, CLTs, and takes on Mediterranean, Creole, and Mexican food. Don’t let its quirky exterior or cozy interior fool you: Maggie’s is by no means cheap, with few dishes below $15. But Landis more than makes up for it with creativity — her cheese fries casserole is a real doozy — and commitment to organic, healthy ingredients. Check out the recently added juice bar." - Robert Rubsam

‼️‼️‼️ EXPIRED ITEMS‼️‼️‼️I strongly do not recommend this place, they gave us 3 month expired hot sauce and it has visible mold. Very old place, and not a very warming atmosphere. The older waitress was very sweet and kind until the expired food was brought up to her attention. The food took 45 minutes, there was no other people in the restaurant. The waitress said “chef is very tired today”.

Maggie’s cafe is a breath of fresh air in a busy life. The music, the atmosphere, the staff - say what you will about vibes, but they’re abundant here. We enjoyed slowing down and have an absolutely massive meal before skiing one morning, and liked it so much we returned the next day. The food is delicious and made with meticulous care. If you are looking for something unique that makes you feel like part of the community, definitely give Maggie’s a visit.

This restaurant is a breath of fresh air among the mountain fresh air. My husband and I came in on a Monday morning which can be a feat in itself since a lot of restaurants close on Mondays. We were greeted by Miss Maggie herself who made us feel welcomed and was apologizing for being a one woman show. The coffee was absolutely delicious and we got some complimentary fruit plates. The menu has a lot of options and additionally we were told by Elizabeth who was working the day before that Maggie would gladly make us anything if we asked. It immediately feels like you’re at your busy aunt’s house but she always has time to serve you and make you feel welcomed. I had the Miso soup upon her recommendation which I’ll be honestly initially didn’t excite me but she made sure to tell me it’s not your typical miso soup, and she was not lying. It was delicious and had so much flavor and healthy ad ons. My husband ordered a massive cheese omelette and corn beef hash and I got the potato pancakes both entrees came with a delicious spring green salad. She’s making everything to order so it does take a little longer but the restaurant itself has so much visual appeal and interest to keep you busy while you wait. From the music to the actual Krooked windows there’s so much to keep your attention. Anything we asked for she willingly and excitedly obliged. Is it going to be an in and out experience? No so if you’re looking for quick go to a fast food spot. The prices for us were comparable to NYC prices which we are used to, however the ambiance and individualized attention and care is not. Maggie makes you feel like family. We will definitely keep Maggie’s Krooked Cafe in our rotation when we’re in Hunter.

We had the pleasure of being served by Maggie herself and had such a great experience. Maggie was kind and fun and gave us so many great local recommendations. The food was so fresh and phenomenal. The blueberry pancakes were fluffy and flavorful and came with some fun sides like a lentil quinoa salad. Highly recommend!

We recently visited Maggie’s Krooked Cafe & Juice Bar during a road trip to the Catskills Mountains with friends, and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish! From the moment we walked in, Maggie herself welcomed us with such warmth and genuine gratitude that we immediately felt at home. The entire staff was incredibly accommodating, and the food was outstanding. We all ordered pancakes, and one of our friends opted for the eggs Benedict. The flavors were unique yet comforting, with a fresh twist on home fries and pancakes that absolutely worked! We finished our meal with refreshing freshly squeezed juices, which were the perfect end to a delightful brunch. After our meal, Maggie took the time to share her story about building this amazing cafe, and she truly went above and beyond when she encouraged us to visit the Catskills Mountain House for breathtaking views. Maggie and her team exceeded all our expectations, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit. Thank you, Maggie, and everyone at Krooked Cafe, for such a memorable experience!

I was greeted by Maggie herself — a lovely start to a delightful experience. I grabbed a seat outside to enjoy the beautiful day, and it couldn’t have been a better setting: peaceful, inviting, and perfect for settling in with a bit of work. I started with an iced coffee, which was made to perfection — smooth, refreshing, and exactly what I needed. Alongside it, I ordered a fruit salad. It wasn’t your typical mix — the addition of kiwi and pomegranate was both unexpected and delightful, adding a burst of flavor and a thoughtful touch of uniqueness. Afterward, I indulged in a hearty plate of scrambled eggs, hash browns mixed with sweet potatoes, rye toast, and a fresh green salad. Everything was cooked just right, and the salad dressing (though I couldn’t quite place it) was balanced and delicious — evenly coating each crisp bite. The portion was more than generous, and when I couldn’t finish it all, Maggie kindly boxed it up for me. I ended up sitting outside for a couple of hours, working on an assignment, and soaking in the warm, friendly energy of the neighborhood. Every passerby had a smile or a kind word — it felt like the kind of place where community and comfort naturally come together. Maggie’s Krooked Cafe is a gem. Thoughtful food, a relaxed atmosphere, and genuinely welcoming people — highly recommend.

Google
Amazing experience for lunch. Serving size doesn't disappoint. Eclectic atmosphere for an antique building. Juice was fresh squeezed and delicious. A unique and beautiful place to relax and have some nourishment. HIGHLY recommend.

Google
For 6 people we paid a whopping $240 (including tax and tip) for brunch. THE GOOD: the friendly staff, banana pancakes, Eggs Florentine. THE CONS: The smoothies were a little too pricey, grainy, and needed more flavor! MAKE SURE YOU ASK WHAT IS IN THE DISHES BEFORE YOU ORDER! IF YOU HAVE ANY ALLERGIES AT ALL MAKE SURE YOU ASK WHAT IS IN YOUR MEAL. THE SMOOTHIE WAS COCONUT BASED AND THEY DIDN’T MAKE US AWARE. Confirm what cheese they are putting on your omelette. The pancakes, sausage, and bacon was cooked a little too long which made it very crispy. Too Expensive…….But if you do like more eclectic experience this is the place for you.

Yelp
You walk in expecting nothing special, you walk out talking about it for the rest of your life. I have never had a better breakfast anywhere ever before and i reckon I never will. Service was phenomenal , atmosphere was fun and colorful, food was unmatched.

Yelp
I don't know why this place doesn't have a 5 star rating The food was so good and full of flavor Service was amazing We even got to talk to Maggie I highly recommend this place !!!!!!

Yelp
We found Maggie's Krooked Cafe after a brief search specifically for a juice bar. We ended up having a late lunch which was a delightful experience. Although their prices are a bit high (the most we've ever spent for a BLT and Caesar salad...) the food was fresh and delicious! The homemade Caesar dressing was a bit too much, but overall a great little place to enjoy a fun lunch. Not to mention the peace of mind of GF options even in desserts if you have such concerns.

Yelp
Breakfast on Thanksgiving, in a snowstorm. My wife and I both had avocado toast with eggs and a side of corned beef hash. The food was excellent: the eggs just right, the avocado fresh and the hash was possibly the best I've ever eaten. Maggie is a delight, the service was friendly and comprehensive, and the Cafe itself is lovely and quirky and full of natural light from the big windows. Highly recommended.

Yelp
We ate on the porch. Food was absolutely amazing. I had the eggs jardenier and shared a blueberry pancake with my wife. She had the scrambled eggs. We also had fresh squeezed OJ. We were amazed by the quality and freshness of all the ingredients, the unique recipes obviously developed by Maggie over her 40 years of running this place and were delighted with the presentation and Maggie's personality. I can't wait to return. Maybe we'll eat inside next time as the road traffic was a bit loud at times.

Samantha R.

Yelp
Amazing service, food is fresh and the fresh squeezed oj was to die for!! Thank you Maggie you are amazing

Yelp
If I could eat here everyday I would. Come for the food, stay for the staff. We had the nicest breakfast here while on vacation. Personable. Charming and delicious!!! My pesto omelet was on point! They had great recommendations for us to do while in town. Thank you ladies!! See you soon!!

Yelp
Five stars because the owner is very friendly, and the food is quite good. But it's definitely a weird and unpredictable experience. Once it took me like 10 minutes to get a cup of coffee, but she gave me free pastries with it! Another time she seemed to be getting ready to close up, even though we were still in operating hours... but she still made a great lunch for me. I hope that this helps paint a picture so that you can go in with your expectations set correctly

Yelp
Best oranger cooler juice ever! 100% natural! and the donuts and crumb cake were great too!!!!!!!

Yelp
Maggie is so funny and nice but I'm not sure what's happening there. I can see the passion but she needs to push reset and look at what's happening. We stopped in for a late breakfast and were immediately greeted happily by Maggie. We sat down and she offered us coffee right off the bat. I wish every place was that friendly. Here's where things were confusing. There are no menus and what she offers is what she will make. They can't serve hot foods or something else is in the works. The next group behind us was offered even less so who knows what's available. I happened to look at an old menu on Yelp and seen that they have tons of juices and shakes available. I got the breakfast shake and it was very good so that's a win. We also got a croissant.... What showed up was a croissant with potatoes, broccoli, seasoned tomatoes, salad and fruits. Not what I expected and it was comical. Also, $37 for two coffees, a croissant (with unknown items), and breakfast shake. Not exactly your greasy spoon prices. Long story short, it needs help. It has the potential but right now, I can't honestly say I would never come back. Hope things turn around for this staple of Tannersville.

Yelp
Cute little gem! Character with in and genuine service Our food was delicious and healthy! We came here for brunch and would love to visit again! It was a little cold in the space but really it was cold outside too, so I'm not going to complain.

Yelp
My brother and I stopped in here after ziplining for a quick and presumably healthy bite. When we entered the restaurant, everything looked like it was last updated in 2008. Maggie the owner came out in an apron and verbally told us what the menu was. She said that she had "platters" with salad and fruit on them. We looked around everywhere for an actual menu but couldn't find one. She offered to make us a smoothie or juice as well, and that's when I saw the smoothie station.... Oh God, was it in disarray. I've worked in the foodservice industry for 3 years and I know you don't leave food and knives sitting out on cutting boards. The blenders were still dirty from the last time a smoothie was made, and the juicer was dirty, too. I immediately decided then and there that we weren't eating anything there that wasn't already cooked and cling-wrapped because...ew. Maggie came out again from the kitchen and offered the platters again after I told her we were just getting some muffins. She left again for the kitchen and didn't ring us up. My brother and I looked at each other and did not like the vibe we were getting at all. We left without buying anything. Don't waste your time here. This place is not sanitary.

Yelp
Great place with outdoor seating on the porch. Allows for people watching There was no mimosas or boozy brunch. The menu was very large with lots to choose from. Almost every meal is around $17. There's free parking and plenty of street parking. Service was great and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Yelp
Life changing experience!! Maggie (chef) customized BOTH our experiences, as we had to visit for a second time, the first being so wonderful. Plates carry colorful and healthy surprises. All food is fresh and delicious. Menu is extensive and creative. She's changed the way I serve dinner for life! Staff is friendly and attentive. I cannot wait to visit again. Thank you!!

Yelp
The hostess was rude when she took our order. She also charged us a tip without asking if we wanted to leave a tip. I hope the business owner sees this since this is precursor to theft. If she asked us we would've left a tip but charging us without our consent is unacceptable.

Jason E.

Yelp
Exceptionally good food, owner was extremely kind, and the restaurant itself had a lot of personality. Would recommend to anyone in the area and heading to Hunter Mountain.

Donna S.

Yelp
Best breakfast in town. Had amazing fresh squeezed orange juice and avocado toast with a fried egg on top paired with spinach, delicious potatoes, rice, sliced apples, and a really tasty side salad with great dressing. Everything was spiced really good. The customer service was excellent also. They even gave my dog a bowl of water. Couldn't have asked for a better meal and atmosphere.

Yelp
Wonderful experience. Maggie is very personable & makes it a point for everyone to feel welcomed. Food was delicious. Makes suggestions to what wold suit special dietary restrictions. Highly recommend! Coffee was great too!
google avatar

Yelp
The wait is worth the food. Whole foods with great flavor couldn't come in a better form for breakfast. I have been coming here for years and have never had a bad meal here. Maggie always goes above and beyond for her customers. Thank you for always looking out Maggie. - Gary from Saugerties

Yelp
Got scammed at Maggie's Krooked Cafe. Ordered two muffins - she asks if we want them heated with butter. Sure! Got two several day old "muffins" that tasted like sawdust. They were cold and so dry and gross tasting. They were out in a take out clamshell box with cold last night leftover curried rice and soggy lettuce. Honestly we paid 24.50 for two muffins and two coffees and ended up throwing everything out. We decided to go to bread alone to have a proper breakfast in the end. Don't do it. You'll Be sorry.

Dom D.

Yelp
For starters we spent 2 hours in an empty restaurant for 4 simple breakfast meals. We received hard bagels, soggy pancakes and mediocre eggs. They didn't serve any meat and any options you asked about needed to be cleared with Maggie to see if she had it or was willing to make it that day. There was no menu and the bill was $120 for garbage food. Bad food, bad service and terrible prices. I wouldn't recommend anyone ever go to this restaurant.
google avatar

Andrey V.

Yelp
Unfortunately the place seems to have gone downhill. We used to absolutely love it. This time we really can't say our breakfast was satisfying at all. The avocado toast came on dry-ish seed bread with very sloppy sides that made no sense (rice?). Chunks of onions on it just not good. Oatmeal tasted not bad but came floating in some watery juice(?). Wasn't served with toast, home fries and salad. I had to ask for it. Service was reasonable fast though. Not sure we would want come back after this experience. Disappointing.

Michael C.

Yelp
A nice, cozy cafe with friendly waitstaff and a colorful atmosphere. For breakfast, I highly recommend the apple pancakes. WOW, they were good. I also got a ginger, apple, carrot juice that was simple and delicious. It was hard to not load up on all the delicious looking baked goods that greeted us at the door, so we also got a piece of carrot cake.
google avatar

Annie C.

Yelp
overpriced food and way to big portions. Make sure to tell the waitress no sides or else they give you salad, fruit, and rice with your bagel and steak
google avatar

Cal O.

Yelp
Maggie comes on all innocent almost autistic but offers no menu or pricing, so your lulled into thinking this is a fair person. Ordered a home-made bagel with scallion cream cheese, coffee, muffin. Served a Walmart bagel with a little regular cream cheese, coffee, home-made muffin. ...$28...yep, that's right $28. In all fairness the muffin and coffee were good but $28? Well named..."The Crooked Cafe". Total rip off.
google avatar

Yelp
My wife and I had breakfast here today and while the food was delicious the service was not great. Maggie was friendly but there was only one other group in the place when we arrived and after waiting some time I finally went and got menus. We then ordered our food and Maggie spent time fixing place settings on a few tables rather than starting on our order. Seemed a little odd choice of how to spend her time. We also asked for water when we ordered and those were only delivered nearly as our breakfast arrived. The food itself was hot and delicious but the price seemed a bit high. I noticed that an egg sandwich with one egg was $8.95 with add-ons of bacon, cheese, etc. priced at an additional $2 each so a bacon egg and cheese sandwich would be $12.95?!
google avatar

Yelp
So many health violations, no food menu -- owner just told us some food items she could make. So weird and uncomfortable, we had to leave. Really don't know why this place is allowed to be open and operated.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic brunch in Tannersville. My go-to brunch order is always 2 sunny-side up eggs, bacon, fried potatoes (definitely need potatoes!), and sourdough toast with jam and butter. Everything about this breakfast was incredible! The bacon was crispy, the potatoes were buttery and flavorful, the eggs were perfectly runny, the bread seemed fresh baked. I couldn't stop eating everything. Maggie's side salad was amazing too. I don't often get salads with my brunch, but this salad was so fresh that I ended up eating a good amount of it! They have quite a lot of outdoor seating on their patio, so we were able to get a table on a Saturday morning. The service is pretty slow but it is well worth it. Yelp
At first the price on the menu seem a bit high, but when the food came, oh my god! I can barely articulate how surprised I am at the portion. Moreover, the heart and thoughts they put into these plates: the arrangement goes from one side to the other, you start with the savory brunch that you ordered, they put brown rice on the rice, with sesame sauce mixed in, giving it more flavor and texture; the lightly cooked string bean is a good touch; salads got the best dressing; me finish with fresh blueberries! It's all so thoughtful!!

Alexander A.

Yelp
Horrible food, unbelievably expensive. My pancake wasn't cooked. Who the hell eats salad and rice with breakfast? Fruit consisted of two pieces of cantaloupe. What a horrible experience
google avatar

Andrew R.

Yelp
This place was the scene of the worst meal of my life. Do yourself a favor and get breakfast from the gas station down the block you'll thank me later. After waiting about 40 minutes for the food to come out, it was very obvious why. They were trying to creamate the food before they plated it. The bacon that was supposed to be part of the meal was reduced to ashes, The egg was about as rubbery as a car tire and impossible to even cut through with a knife, the "salad" that was on the plate consisted of the butt end of a lettuce??, I don't even know what to say about the rice, and the best was the lone string bean.. why even bother. Ohh did I forget about the hair. This meal along with an egg sandwich and a single glass of OJ cost over $45... which makes no sense at all.. I found no part of the meal here even edible and almost asked for it to go, go right into the trash where it belonged. Im flabbergasted. Never could I have imagined food so absolutely decimated. The poor eggs that never had their moment to shine.

Eleni S.

Yelp
I walked into here fully prepared to buy some baked goods and something To go. I was standing near the doorway waiting for the waitress to walk by with dishes and she immediately told me I had to move because they were busy. - mind you there were LOTS of empty tables and I was waiting to walk by her and check out the pastries to go. Extremely unwelcoming and unfriendly. I was looking forward to trying this but instead left because of the poor mistreatment from the waitress
google avatar

Jen M.

Yelp
Lovely place for a custom smoothie or juice great for pre or post hike treat and helpful local knowledge. Recommended for kids and dogs welcome on the porch.
google avatar

Tyler R.

Yelp
I'd suggest eating elsewhere if going to Hunter Mountain. Within our party of six: -Two of us received moldy toast spots. -Three of the "create your own omelettes" contained the complete wrong ingredients, items that were never even mentioned to the gentleman that took our order. -Expensive. The staff was friendly and I loved the artwork all around, but the actual eating experience was botched.

Samantha D.

Yelp
Absolutely the worst place I've ever been . Food was inedible and absolutely extortionate price . Waitress mis calculated our bill and only we asked for a recheck we would've over paid by $40. Maggie the owner was rude and unwilling to help . Every breakfast came with rice and vegetables and honestly all food was disgusting. Do not go here
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Everything here is amazing! The food is made with love and packed with flavor! I highly recommend the Egg Salmon Feume! I came here with friends for a weekend getaway and this was our favorite place all weekend. We also had a chance to meet Ms. Maggie, who's staff was so nice to our large group of 8. She told us about her background and where her recipes come from and we can't wait to come back!
google avatar

Rusty S.

Yelp
Cool little cafe in Tannersville. Everyone seemed incredibly friendly. Someone who appeared to be the owner told us they can only serve cafe style items (bagels, muffins, etc) while she gets a permit figured out, but the coffee we had was great.

Harla R.

Yelp
Holy moly disgusting. The prices indicate that you should feel like royalty eating here.... I find it more akin to stepping on a slug, barefoot. Rice does not go with everything... I don't know who didn't tell them this. Everything was mushy and gross. The omelet I got was ina pool of liquid. It had no flavor. There was definitely some kind of shell or other hard item in it. The restrooms were atrocious. Service was rude and slow. Also... pay cash so you can be sure of what they charge you. They deserved no tip, I still gave one. Then they decided to take some more. This was the absolute worst experience.
google avatar

Rebecca B.

Yelp
Run don't walk to this cute lil cafe for breakfast, brunch or lunch! We had the green smoothies, Ploughman's platter & the eggs jardiniere. Portion are generous, the staff is friendly and everything was super tasty! We especially enjoyed the home fries!!!
google avatar

Kristin M.

Yelp
Don't come here. Don't. You wait 90 min for your food. It will come out cold. And it's overpriced.
google avatar

Seth Z.

Yelp
Ok.. A warning again. Food is excellent. Service is slow. It is worth it. I love Maggies. Every time I go to the mountains we go here for breakfast. We especially love the Mother Daughter and the peanut butter sandwich. We know when we go here the service is always friendly. It takes time to get your food. Be patient. Maggie cooks everything. This time around we had a party of eight. The dishes ordered were the mother daughter, the tofu scramble, the peanut butter sandwich, Eggs Salmon Fume, Krooked Rancheros. Everything was outstanding. The only thing that needed improvement was the hollandaise sauce. It was clumpy. (It is hard to make). I will always go back. Never a disappointment.
google avatar

Kevin F.

Yelp
Do not come here. This is my $20 grilled chicken sandwich and "fries". What a mess and it's not even good. Chicken is really dry and this what they call fries. Mushy flavorless potatoes. Go to Mama's Boy Burger down the road. I want a full refund!
google avatar

Ada T.

Yelp
Wow, what a fun cafe! It's definitely Krooked in a fun way! We ordered the veggie omelet and mushroom burger with cheese. What I expected were your regular run of the mill omelet and burger with fries. What an unexpected surprise! In addition, we received cabbage, grains, and a small salad on our plates! How fun! The burger was LOADED with mushrooms, which I loved. This restaurant is not to miss when in town! And please don't pass up their pastry counter! It's a must!
google avatar

Brian M.

Yelp
Ok first off great decor. Loved the staff. The food we had was awesome but you wait for it. Because all orders are made fresh. You can see it when you get it. Dogs allowed on porch. Big plus for me. Menu rocked eggs benidect were great. Another easy breakfast spot. Don't pass it up. Little pricey but man what a finish. You won't be disappointed

Jason C.

Yelp
The owner is so nice!!!! The food was amazing and it's such a nice cafe. Would 110% return :) 6/5 Stars
google avatar

Yasine O.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. I've been going here since I was a kid and the food has maintained its quality throughout time. I love the large portions, too! For any out of town visitors, be advised that all the food is made by Maggie, so wait times will be longer than what you may be used to if it's a crowded day (but it is definitely worth the wait). Maggie and the staff are really friendly. Any issues I've seen have been caused by tourists who lack manners and basic decency, but again, the staff are lovely.

Camila V.

Yelp
Maggie is so kind and sweet! Kitchen was closed but she served us anyway and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The food was great! So much food :). I also came here for breakfast a couple years back and the baked goods were amazing!
google avatar

Stevie N.

Yelp
One bite transported me to the decades when I was a vegetarian in Austin, Tx, and had multiple amazing cafes to choose from! The pineapple salad was filled with crunchy green beans, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, mango, seeds, olives, and finished with a delightful miso dressing. Portions are big! Freshness is worth the wait! My Chile grilled cheese was actually a triple decker! Wow, to think how much money I wasted at more expensive Woodstock "vegan" restaurants that don't have half the variety. Sheesh. I'll be heading back to Tannersville just for this!!

christine a.

Yelp
Stopped by late afternoon snack for some tea, coffee and donut. The donut was served nicely plated with fruit. The servers were so nice and warm. I also accidentally left a personal item behind and they were kind enough to hold on it for me to pick up. Had a great experience and amazing service!
