Essential Denver Ice Cream Shops for Savoring the End of Summer

"After more than 35 years in Lakewood, Magill’s opened a scoop shop onsite in 2016. More than 100 flavors are made there each week, with about 40 rotating in the store. Chocolate banana oreo, caramel cashew, and Guinness stout are just a few of the good ones," - Eater Staff

Google
Good ice cream and cute shop. Super young employees but that’s to be expected for an icecream shop in the summer. They have pup cups with human grade low fat sugar free frozen yogurt for dogs that our guy loves!! I’m a chocolate snob and I’ll say that they’re double dark chocolate isn’t super chocolatey haha. But we have gone back several times. We love this place!

Google
I felt like I was tapping into a secret spot despite there being a full dining room, full outside benches, and a line out the door. I ordered a banana split and the ice cream was delish and the toppings were plentiful. Can’t go wrong with anything here.

Google
Magill's World of Ice Cream is a must-visit! The service was fast and efficient, allowing me to enjoy my treats without any delays. I tried the Strawberry Cheesecake and Nutella, and both were bursting with rich, delicious flavors. It's clear they use high-quality ingredients in their ice cream. What makes this shop stand out is its fun, welcoming atmosphere. There are plenty of board games to enjoy while you indulge, making it a great spot for friends or family. With a wide variety of flavors and toppings to choose from, you’ll never run out of options. If you're looking for a delightful ice cream experience, I highly recommend Magill’s. It's a fun and tasty treat for anyone.

First Visit to Magill’s – We Loved It! This was my first time visiting Magill’s Ice Cream, and it was wonderful! The ice cream is delicious — it’s the first time I’ve had real cream milk ice cream in the U.S., not made from whipped cream, and the difference is amazing. My daughters loved trying all the fun kid-friendly flavors like cotton candy, Superman, and birthday cake. It was a great experience for the whole family, and we definitely plan to come back!

Google
Went for some ice cream with the family. I got a banana split at the register I told the young girl my ice cream was melted, she said that was the syrup, what syrup?????? When taking a bite it was already completely melted. Tasted like chocolate milkshake with bananas. 2 mins later my kids ice cream was dripping. It not even a hot day. It was actually a rainy type day. I rather drive 10 mins down for the real thing.

Google
Very yummy flavors. Loved the salted caramel Oreo + Nutella. For non-chocolate flavors raspberry + huckleberry. There are also vegan and no sugar added flavors. GAMES!!! Love that there are some simple old fashioned, easy, family/ group games. Plenty of options. Reasonable prices!!

Google
Another Lakewood secret I shouldn't share. But this is my one and only place to go for and awesome family outing with many flavors of delicious ice-cream to satisfy the whole family- pup cups are available aswell. Top choice in my opinion.

Google
Honestly this is my favorite ice cream place in the entire Denver metro area. I’ve been to over 20 different places and the flavor choices, portion size, prices, service are all 10/10. Please make cinnamon a year round flavor🙏🏻

Yelp
Magills never disappoints, and for sure never skimp on portions sizes. Photo here is the regilular (not large) 2 scoops. For $6, this is amazing. And their milkshakes are just as good. Been in denver close to 1 year and tried a lot of ice cream places. This one still my #1.

Yelp
Your traditional creamery with all the classic flavors and then some! In addition to the standard cones, you can get pints, gallons, cakes, etc. Super generous with the servings! Be prepared this place can get a super long line and sometimes up to 30 minutes to wait. While you wait, you can play cute board games like Connect Four and Guess Who. Ample parking, but this is like the only thing happening in the plaza.
google avatar

Savanna B.

Yelp
Okay, this place is super cute!! I love the retro aesthetic and the selection of flavors and treats. My toddler and I shared a regular sized bowl with pistachio and chocolate ice cream. They were both good, especially the pistachio, which I find can be kind of hit and miss depending on the shop. The person who helped us was very nice and patient. We also loved the games and had a fun time playing Connect 4 while we enjoyed our ice cream. The only thing I would change is that it would be great if they offered a kiddie cone or a kiddie scoop!
google avatar

Yelp
If you've never heard of a Superman cake, don't feel stupid because I hadn't either but can tell you that it is delicious. We ordered one at the recommendation of Magill's for our daughter's birthday and everyone was very happy. I can't even really tell you what ice cream is in it, but when they cake it with cookie crumbles and cover it in a whipped frosting it turns into magic. If you haven't tried their ice cream you need to give it a shot!
google avatar

Pixie M.

Yelp
Wowza! What a great variety of choices here! I had a scoop of huckleberry and a scoop of s'mores; I know weird to have together but I couldn't make up my mind. Though there was quite a crowd in there on a Saturday night, the staff kept up with the flow without making us feel rushed to make a decision.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
Such a fun, long-standing ice cream spot! My daughter has an egg allergy, and most of their flavors are egg-free, plus the allergens are posted on their online menu. The staff are friendly and helpful. They have many flavors, and always have no-added sugar, vegan, and seasonal options. Be prepared to wait in line if it's nice out!
google avatar

Shelby S.

Yelp
FORTY EIGHT FLAVORS. We didn't try every single flavor, but I am willing to bet every single flavor is delicious. The line was almost out the door when we arrived and it makes sense because this ice cream is top tier. They had several people working and keeping the line moving fast and the overall vibe was joyous because everyone was enjoying delicious ice cream. We were all obviously in the mood for cookies with our ice cream so we got a mix of all of them. We will definitely be back!!
google avatar

Robbin B.

Yelp
We drove from Morrison on the advise of our server @lunch, it was worth the trip! The vibe is a hometown ice cream parlor. Magill's world of Ice cream is very inviting with friendly employees. Don't have time to enjoy a scoop? A large freezer section offers grab and go ice cream pints, gallons and ice cream cakes. Don't forget the homemade cones. I enjoyed that everyone in my group could have a scoop, they offer great dairy free & sugar free options.

Yelp
Amazing!!! Get ready for amazing ice cream! It's all real and the flavors are wide-ranging. You have standard chocolate and vanilla, but then speciality ice creams, like Guinness-flavored or coffee. It's all real and all delicious! Lines can be a bit long. You can taste test, so find out what you like!

Obadiah B.

Yelp
Greatest freaking Ice cream in the State and the service beyond that Highly recommended

Yelp
If you like ice cream and don't wait to wait at little man ice cream. This place is a hidden dime. They got lots of flavors and even oat milk for those who have sensitive stomachs.
google avatar

Drizzy G.

Yelp
I would give them 4.5 stars if I could. Not a perfect 5, but pretty darn close. Great ice cream with non-dairy selections as well. Board games and quiz challenges can be found in their seating area. The staff is friendly and the lines go fast. The only thing that would make this place better would be cleaning the tables and seating area more frequently. Great place!

Cathy G.

Yelp
Best ice cream around. Tons of flavors and the service is on point! We always go when we're in town.
google avatar

Trent G.

Yelp
This place is a neighborhood gem. We come here probably once a week for an afternoon treat, and the rotational flavors, dairy free and vegan options, and assortment of other treats is far too many to ever make it through in one lifetime. But that won't stop me from trying! The prices are affordable, the service is friendly and fantastic, and the atmosphere is great for gathering family and friends. Board games and connect four scattered throughout the place filled with smile and laughter. What more could you ask for? Plus, they are such a strong supporter in the community as well, and we see them at plenty of events from time to time. We'll never get tired of going here, even in the dead of winter.
google avatar

Cindy W.

Yelp
In my opinion, the ice cream is not very flavorful. The strawberry milkshake didn't taste much like strawberry and the ice cream tasted more bland than I expected
google avatar

Alisa J.

Yelp
Really amazing ice cream! Fast service and the prices are reasonable for the amount of ice cream you get. We tried Irish cream, Jack daniels, huckleberry, sleepless in Seattle (coffee) and root beer. The Irish cream and Jack daniels were the best, the root beer lacked flavor. The other two were good solid choices. Loved playing connect four while we ate our ice cream. Love this spot!

Yelp
It was national ice cream day this past Sunday and my wife suggested Magill's because she heard about it on the news. It was not far from where we lived, so we decided to check it out. With 40 flavors, choosing one is not easy. It was slightly busy, but the line moved quickly and the service was great. My wife wanted a waffle cone with a scoop of banana oreo and I ended up getting a waffle bowl with Sleepless in Seattle, which had coffee and chocolate chunks. Both were so good and the banana ice cream was OG banana flavor (think banana runts). They also had little cups of doggie yogurt - so awesome! Our pup loved his treat too. This is a great, old fashioned ice cream shop with flavors sure to please all. They also have ice cream cakes plus pints and quarts to go. Huge portions and reasonable prices. I really enjoyed the waffle bowl!

Yelp
One word: WOW!!! Since moving a few blocks away from Magill's, my guy had been reminding me that we needed to stop by. For months, I kept forgetting and now I'm mad that I didn't experience Magills sooner! This place is awesome! Let me preface by saying I pride myself in being somewhat of an ice cream connoisseur. I have some local faves in Denver (shout out to Little Man and Right Cream). So, Im always hopeful when visiting a new ice cream spot, but realistic about the great spots that are out there. Magills has earned a spot in my top 3 favorite ice cream shops! I went on a weeknight and the shop was buzzing with families sitting inside and even hanging outside together enjoying Magills offerings. People popped in and out ordering scoops and also picking up ice cream sandwiches and pints to take home. I got myself a scoop of half birthday cake and half salted caramel Oreo. Both flavors were incredible! If you're an ice cream cake lover, definitely the the birthday cake. However, the salted caramel Oreo is out of this world! My mouth is literally watering just thinking about it! Did I mention that Magills scoops are super generous. One scoop with two flavors was enough to satisfy me! And you can't beat their price for the deliciousness you're getting. Do yourself a favor and swing by Magills for your next ice cream craving. It may be difficult to choose one of their about 40 flavors, but the sweet staff working lets you sample so you can find your favorite!

Yelp
Love this place!! Excellent ice cream, great prices! Basic, old school ice cream shop!

Lester W.

Yelp
Great flavor selection, particularly the salted caramel oreo. Lots of sitting space. Friendly servers.

Yelp
GO. TO. MAGILL'S!! Do I need to say more? Apparently I do need to say more because YELP won't let me just post that ;) But there is plenty more to be said. Magill's has literally 40 flavors (haven't counted, just eye-balling) could be more! You can get more than one flavor and still count it as one scoop! And let me tell you... one scoop is plenty! They give you a huge serving for just one! One of their most popular flavors is salted Carmel Oreo, try it if you're even slightly interested!

Natalia D.

Yelp
awesome place. If I lived closer it would be a weekly must. GREAT ice cream and fun atmosphere with good service. Yes please!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has amazing ice cream. One of the best places outside of Bonnie Brae that I have been to for that cold tasty treat! Keep doing what you do guys
google avatar

Yelp
I have been coming to Magills with my family since I was a kid and it had always been a favorite! It is so cute and the flavors are all delicious. This time I got salted caramel Oreo and caramel fudge brownie swirl and they are my two new favorites

Yelp
I'm from out of town and wanted to find a more local ice cream shop. That's how I fell upon Magill's. When I first arrived there was a huge line out the door. Typically this is a good sign and I was happy to wait in line. After about 25 minutes of waiting I finally got to order. The regular size comes with two scoops of flavors, so I chose pistachio nut and butter pecan (my favorite flavor). I should've been warned by the radioactive green pistachio color that it would not be good, but I took a leap of faith. I noticed none of the staff had gloves on and were directly touching the waffle cones and ice cream scoops. The store itself had a weird dirty mop smell too. While I ordered the girl also tipped my cup over and my ice cream touched the counter. She immediately picked it back up and served it to me. She didn't offer to make a new one but brought me to pay. I would've overlooked all of this, but the final taste test was so extremely anticlimactic. The pistachio nut barely tasted like pistachio and dare I say had a hint of mint flavor in it? It was so strange. The butter pecan was also void of the usual rich flavor. The portion sizes are massive, but I think I would have had better luck buying a pint of ice cream from a grocery store.
google avatar

Namrata F.

Yelp
Lots of cool flavors to choose from! Extremely generous scoops. We loved it and glad we found this place!

Jon W.

Yelp
The service here can only be explained with one word. Exceptional. By far, the best staff and ice cream I've ever had in my entire life. As somebody who, quite frankly, enjoys a lot of ice cream, knows a good spot when I find one. The girl who helped us, I think her name was Ally, is made to put a smile on peoples faces. Definitely give this place a try

B B.

Yelp
This tucked away little gem in Lakewood is SO GOOD! The service was great and so many ice cream flavors to choose from!
google avatar

Miatsu K.

Yelp
My wife and I were simply driving east bound on Jewell when she looked up and saw this store. She was wanting ice cream and this is a place we had never been before. So, we flipped a u-turn and pulled in. We are so glad we did. This is clearly a local favorite as it was very busy serving families and teenagers on dates. The store is very bright and cheery and reminded us of an old world ice cream parlor. The ice cream selection was incredible and they even a broad range of ice cream cookies and sandwiches. Not to mention, the had a large variety of ice cakes as well. The staff was extremely pleasant and welcoming and the prices were very reasonable. I bought a quart of homemade strawberry ice cream and I loved it. My wife got pistachio nut ice cream and she enjoyed that as well. The building is clean and well maintained and has plenty of private parking right need the entry doors. This place was fantastic and we will certainly be back.

Jackie C.

Yelp
Exceptional service, and fabulous assortment of ice cream flavors. If you encounter a long line .. do not fret the staff makes the little wait well worth it, and put that yummy smile on your face. Wow! At the wall of your to go ice creams, cakes and pies are amazing. Oh and they too have treats for your dog. Games at the tables if you desire to eat inside The staff is quite friendly and helpfully. We will always make Magill's a must stop when in town.
google avatar

A.J. M.

Yelp
Meh. A lot of people rave about this place and I don't get it. We have tried it several times just to see if maybe some of the other flavors would be better, but haven't loved any of it. Seems like a great place for kids- everything is overly sweet tasting and there are games and stuff to play when you're there. As an adult, if you want some solid home made ice cream, I'd make the drive to Denver to get something way better. There's always a giant line at this place too... Not worth the wait in my opinion.
google avatar

Tom C.

Yelp
Blown away by all the good reviews for this place. The main thing Magill's has going for it is the service, as the staff is friendly. The ice cream, however, leaves much to be desired. They clearly use cheap ingredients and artificial flavors. Their strawberry is neon pink and features a few pieces of barely recognizable freeze dried strawberries. It seems like the people who like this either give it the benefit of the doubt due to nostalgia, or have never tried ice cream that uses real, premium ingredients. There are much better options in the Denver area than this!
google avatar

Oriana S.

Yelp
Unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. While the size and price were commendable, the flavors fell far short of expectations. One of the key aspects I noticed was the artificial taste that pervaded all the flavors I tried. It seemed as though the ingredients used were not of the highest quality, resulting in a lackluster and inauthentic taste. This was particularly disappointing considering the vibrant and enticing descriptions provided on the menu. Another issue I encountered was the excessive sweetness in the ice cream. It's not uncommon for ice cream to be on the sweeter side, but in this case, it was overpowering and overwhelming. This made it challenging to truly enjoy the flavors and appreciate the nuances that could have been present. Despite giving Migills Ice Cream a couple of chances, the outcome was consistently underwhelming. The flavors just didn't deliver on the promises made and left me feeling indifferent towards them. It was a missed opportunity for me to discover new and exciting tastes. On a positive note, Migills Ice Cream does excel in the portion size department. Their ice cream servings are undoubtedly generous, providing you with plenty to enjoy. If you're someone who values quantity over flavor, then this may be a redeeming factor worth considering. A great hang out for teens. In summary, while Migills Ice Cream offers sizable portions at fair prices, the artificial taste and excessive sweetness detract from the overall experience. If you're seeking truly unforgettable flavors, you may want to explore other options instead.

Yelp
We were in Lakewood, it was almost 9pm, we wanted ice cream, and Magill's closed at 9:30. So we drove right over! It's in a shopping mall, no lie it was a little intimidating and dark at night but Magill's is well lit and there's plenty of parking. There was a decent line on a Sunday night, but they had 3 people helping serve so it moved fairly quickly. In addition to getting ice cream to eat immediately, there are ice cream cakes, ice cream sandwiches, and containers of their ice cream to go (including some interesting/fun looking flavors!) They all looked plenty tasty! They have flavors available online, but in-person there were even more to choose from. Both dairy-free flavors (sign says they use oat milk) and sorbets, although many of the sorbets include dairy as well. There's a good variety of fruity, fun, and classic flavors - I got one scoop of caramel brownie, and one scoop of black cherry. The black cherry had actual pieces of cherry in it, and the caramel brownie was pretty dece (although I maybe wanted even a little more caramel.) The ice cream is good and creamy, and the hot fudge was decadent and thick! You can get two flavors in a single cup, and that was plenty for me to get my ice cream fill. Prices were pretty on par with other places I've seen in the Denver area. COVID note - the staff are not masked, there's no mask requirement and no social distancing enforced. They do have outdoor and indoor seating open. I think given the surge of the delta variant we felt a little uncomfortable with how many non-masked people there are; so just something to be heads up about. Otherwise a great ice cream stop!
google avatar

Joe R.

Yelp
First time visit for some frozen dessert. Lots of flavors to choose from and even a selection of sorbet too. There is inside seating as well as outside too. Load up a chocolate dipped waffle cone with 2 or 3 scoops, and it'll be a highlight to your day!
google avatar

Glenn T.

Yelp
Clean and great ice cream. Staff is hard-working and friendly. I recommend the mint chocolate chip or the cookie dough.
google avatar

Sara N.

Yelp
We go here fairly regularly and have never once had a bad experience. I have a few favorites but the piece of cake is not only good, but this is the only place I've ever seen anything like it. It's ice cream cake by the scoop. The staff is always friendly. The portions are huge. There is a well stocked pint/quart to go freezer. They also sell a handful of novelties to go. There are a ton of options. And for us, it's right around the corner.
google avatar

Kayla C.

Yelp
Five stars and worth every one of them. Huge portions, cheap prices, and ice cream is super delicious! Tried cookies and cream and Reese's PB cup. Talk about the chunks! Will be coming here every time I want ice cream in the near future.
google avatar

Noelani D.

Yelp
HOLY MOLY! I'd melt for another scoop of ice scream from Magill's. The scoops are HUGE! We were warned by the person helping us, but it still exceeded our expectations. I got one scoop of birthday cake and one scoop of coconut cream pie. The coconut was definitely my favorite, though they were both delicious. The ice cream is creamy and smooth and soft just as it should be! I was also excited to see the wide variety of unique flavors -- the espresso, coconut seven layer and Jack Daniels flavors are calling my name for the next visit.

Brenna M.

Yelp
Great place all around. They were very busy but the shop was clean & staff was patient, friendly & fast. Ordered mint chocolate chip for myself & daughter. Delicious! Grabbed an ice cream cake on the way out for a friend's birthday. It was a hit, so good! Even with as busy as they were the employee offered to write on the cake, and it turned out wonderful!
google avatar

Emilykate H.

Yelp
After reading the most recent comment, I had to get on and post the real truth. Magill's is truly an amazing family owned and operated establishment. They provide an amazing variety of flavor's throughout the year with amazing customer service. I have been to Magill's probably 10/15 times since 2019 and this is still my favorite ice cream place in Denver. I don't care if it's a 10/20 minute drive, I'm going to Magill's for my ice cream .
google avatar

Chris W.

Yelp
Kind of your present day B&R (for those old enough to decode that) Lots of flavors. When the lines are quite long (I was also there Sunday, International Ice Cream day!) simply grab a couple quarts and go.The Jack Daniels /choc chip is quite bomb. two thumbs up
google avatar

Jackie K.

Yelp
Some of the best ice cream this side of town. The flavors are great & the service is speedy. It's worth the long lines! They also have puppy treats.
google avatar

Ronnie K.

Yelp
We LOVE Magills! The flavors they have are amazing and delicious! It is so hard to decide which flavors to get! I always say I will try something new and in the end I get a scoop of 7 layer coconut, and a scoop of salted Carmel Oreo. The scoops are huge, and I have enough in the bowl to have a few bites each night for about 5-6 days. My husband and kids can eat their two scoops in one or two days lol. Our son often gets the malts instead and they are made perfectly. They have various sizes of your favorite flavors to go, as well as cakes and treats for the pups! The staff are a great group of teens/younger adults, and do a great job of moving the line along quickly. The wait is never long even when out the door, and you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

cyn g.

Yelp
Wow! Super fresh ice cream with amazing flavor choices. One scoop is $4 but actually has 2 scoops and you can mix flavors! Coconut options are decadent. Ice cream cakes are gorgeous and with a chocolate cookie crunch layer and frosting that reminds me of Carvel cakes. We splurged and got one for $27. The layer of cookie crunch was too thin, which was a bummer but the ice cream is worth it. Lots of seating including booths with connect 4 and other games to play. Staff are consistently friendly, patient while you sample from so many choices- be sure to take their recommendations.

Yelp
In my daily barrage of COVID daily update emails, guess what landed in my inbox today? Magill's is offering Curbside delivery. Well, that's cool! It's been a while since we enjoyed a cone here, think it was last summer, maybe. As I've shared in other recent Yelp reviews, supporting small business is top of mind. My family has a small business out of state and I've seen hard work jeopardized in a downturned economy. Little actions like buying a quart of ice cream locally matters.... or maybe seven. Don't judge! So, fifty flavors to choose from in the quart size? Yep, you immediately see my dilemma here. And, we aren't getting out often so making the most of our one trip. So, yeah, I ordered many. Shout out to Black Cherry and Salted Caramel Oreo.... delicious. I had to practice discipline to not eat the entire quart, haha! And, did I mention price? $6.77 per quart. Wowzer! Magill's staff met us at the curb with our order. Fabulous, quick and easy. They're open to 8 these days and it's always a good idea to call ahead. So, happy days ahead for me.... in fact, guess what I'm having for lunch tomorrow?!?!

Kathy B.

Yelp
Fun, happening ice cream place. Absolutely delicious ice cream! Friendly staff. Lots of people playing board games and eating ice cream on a Monday night!!

Yelp
Way better than little man ice cream This place is a hidden gem hidden in the back of a strip mall in Lakewood and it's amazing! People in the metro Denver area rave about little man, but Magill's is where it's at. They always have a huge selection of ice creams, impressive portions for the prices, and they let you split single scoop servings between two flavors. And most importantly, it's delicious!! My favorite is to combine black cherry, pistachio, and the double dark chocolate. Try it. You won't be sorry.
