The 11 Best Drinks to Try in Oaxaca, Mexico | Eater

"A bar that showcases regional spirits, including locally made aguardiente de caña (sugar-cane rum) produced in Oaxaca’s eastern highlands; it’s a place to sample these rural distillates, which are less commonly bottled for export but remain central to local communities." - Shava Cueva

A must try! We went to this restaurant without expectation and were overwhelmed by the food. We ordered a guacamole with a crispy cheese, short rib, beef tataki, and ended the culinary experience with one of the best desserts we have ever tasted, a chocolate mole with flowers ... Wow! Congratulations to the Chef.

Maguey y Maíz is a new restaurant in Oaxaca’s Centro. The waiter told me they had been open for about six months. They should have a ton more reviews than the 32 at the time of this one. The decor is stylish and minimal. The wait staff is attentive. The wine pour at 90 pesos is a bit light and the only negative aspect of our visit. We shared the guacamole and shrimp dish. Both were delicious. GoyoGTO recommends highly. Let them know you read my review and please give the review a thumbs up 👍 Happy travels!

before 1pm there’s only breakfast menu with smaller selections of food that are half american half mexican food, so go after 1pm. got the nice fruit bowl, waffles (soggy/soft) w/ fruits, avocado toast w/ salad (favorite), and ice cream w/ cake. love all the fruits.

This was a great meal for our last night in Oaxaca! The service was incredible (best service we had all week), and the food was very good. The dishes were very unique and showcased Oaxacan cuisine very well. My husband said his michelada was the best he’s ever had (and he’s had a lot).

Fresh food, nice local products, good drinks, pretty place ( located in the inner patio of a classic building ) and friendly staff. Again, one small place that’s really proposing great products for an even greater price. Happy to see how smaller places are just being so competitive to the bigger established and famous restaurants of the city. A must go.

Google
This restaurant was a hidden gem. The food rivals the best restaurants in Oaxaca, easily. The staff were friendly, the setting was wonderful under the leafy canopy. The food was utterly delicious, and beautifully presented. We stumbled in here after being turned away from the big name restaurants of Oaxaca and it ended up being one of our best meals of our stay.

Fantastic contemporary local cuisine. Food was very representative of the region, with local ingredients and an amazing combination of flavors. It’s a place that worth to visit. Service was outstanding, very friendly staff.

Has two entrances so don’t worried if they take a moment to see you. Very clean, nice courtyard experience typical of Oaxaca, with small bar area off to the side. Service was quick, and very polite 👍 nice finishes on everything including table setting. I ordered the eggs with black beans and chorizo and side of bacon. Came with avocado, cheese, pickled onion and garnish. Very good flavor and decent portion. As a meat lover I’d like more chorizo however the dish was properly balanced. Worth a trip for sure. The tortillas were excellent and perfect for soaking up the chorizo and bean juices!

Yelp
Ordered a few drinks and the birria! Very good! If you check in, they offer a free house mezcal if you Checkin on Yelp! Margarita was sweet but good and the birria was a decent portion of meat with a tasty consome but we ate it too fast and forgot to snap a picture!

Yelp
Recently visited Oaxaca and this was one of my favorite places. We ordered a lot of appetizers just to try and each had a entree. I can't remember the exact names of each dish but you can't go wrong ordering anything on the menu. If you have a group of people, I would highly recommend ordering multiple dishes and sharing. Service was on point and the vibe was also really nice. The restaurant is surrounded by shops and a park. Walking distance to most of the local hotels.

Yelp
Lovely courtyard, very charming. A small but cozy space. Tasty food. I enjoyed my tlayuda (my first tlayuda in Oaxaca). Ample tostadas for the table, coupled with unique salsas. Friendly and efficient service.

Yelp
Beautiful courtyard & I had the most delicious (& also beautiful) oatmeal bowl with red berries & other goodies mixed in; served cool & it was filling & incredibly yummy!

Yelp
We happened upon this restaurant and were hesitant because it was empty. The food was DELICIOUS though. Very contemporary cuisine, but anyone should be able to find something they enjoy. Service was great. By the time we left it was full of patrons.

Yelp
Some of the best food I had in Oaxaca, beautiful use of ingredients, lovely courtyard ambiance, warm and welcoming staff, excellent cocktails.

Yelp
Wow the food is so incredible, the staff are absolutely lovely. We stayed in oaxaca for just over a week and enjoyed all our meals but this was the very very best

Yelp
Service is fine but the food was sadly very mediocre and actually took quite awhile to come out for an empty interior. Love cilantro, but there was so much used as garnish, probably to cover up the lack of flavours, and overwhelmed each dish it was on - a lot of pomp and circumstance. Ceviche negro was bland, tough, and chewy even though it was diced into small portions. On top of that it was clear that the fruit was frozen beforehand because it was still frozen when it was mixed in so it had an unappealing icy texture throughout the dish - my partner did not finish the dish. I got bone marrow and it was again getting an over dressed treatment with loads of fried greens and corn to cover up the lack of marrow in each bone. They gave me three tortillas which was pointless because even between the two bones, there wasn't enough marrow to fill one small tortilla to eat it with. We knew we shouldn't have gone in given the lack of customers, but giving this place a chance when there weren't options was regrettable. It's sad because the menu's concept sounds promising, but it ended up just being disappointing.

Yelp
We wandered in here after attempting to go to Casa Oaxaca without success. The space is beautiful and relaxing. We loved our cocktails and ceviche. The guacamole with pork rinds and chapulines was absolutely delicious. I'd definitely suggest trying this newer place. Service was lovely and it was easy to walk in and get a table in the courtyard.

Yelp
I was hoping to find a place to have a zoom meeting and eat too. The wifi was horrible for this purpose, had to use my hotspot. The food was okay, a little bland, had a broccoli soup and catch of day, dorado, which I was not crazy about. Waiter Aldrid went out of his way to provide great service since I kept moving paces to try to find a good connection. however, not sure why he did not bring the check. Cashier Angela had an attitude when she brought it, she asked it'd be better if I paid in cash, without knowing the amount it was hard for me to know. No greet, nothing. She came back to pick up the $$ and at no point did she address me or said anything other than walk away. I tipped Aldrid $125 pesos, I surely hope he gets it because I didn't get a chance to see him again. I let Angela know that she could be a bit nicer, but she just kept saying okay, okay. Not sure if she does this with foreign tourism too but as a national, it was a first time disappointment. My drink was good, mezcal, dehydrated pineapple and yerba santa.

Yelp
Does well in all aspects. Attractive decor, friendly, professional staff, great food and cocktails with excellent presentation. We would come back tomorrow!

Yelp
Wonderful experience! Food was fabulous! A great find. Great service. The pollo de rancho was a spicy chicken breast with lots of flavors. The fresh fish of the day was in a green mole. Light and delicious. I would highly recommend this place.
