The 38 Best Restaurants in Toronto, Canada | Eater

"Chef Maha Barsoom opened this Egyptian brunch spot in 2014 with her daughter, chef Monika Wahba, and son, barista Mark Wahba. The east end spot in Leslieville produces a spirited cacophony that’s straight out of the streets of Cairo. There’s usually a line, but patience is rewarded with the tactile pleasures of Maha’s Cairo Classic breakfast platter: intensely aromatic charred baladi bread, piquant ful (stewed, seasoned fava beans mixed with tomatoes and onions) to smear on top, and refreshing tomato-feta salad. The Mind Blowing Chicken sandwich is also bursting with explosive energy: The meat is combined with parsley, onions, and tomatoes, piled onto two squishy buns, and finished with tomeya (garlic sauce), house mayonnaise, and tahini. Know before you go: There could be a massive snowstorm in Toronto and still be an hours-long line-up for a table here. Unless you want to campout at 6 a.m. (before they open doors at 8), consider takeout." - Tiffany Leigh

"Homesick for Egypt, Maha Barsoom opened her eponymous restaurant in 2014, and it's been a good thing for Leslieville residents ever since. Climb the steps to land in the coffee bar, then immediately order the epic honey-cardamom latte. This homey spot serves breakfast and lunch only, and there are no reservations. Lentil soup is an absolute must. Local lore says it's what sparked her to open Maha's, and after one spoonful you'll see why. The warm bowl delivers sharp tartness courtesy of vinegar-soaked Vidalia onions; charred mini pita adds a creamy body and garlic tomatoes share a sweet acidity. The Cairo classic is another go-to. This tender fava bean stew is plated with a fluffy orb of falafel and slices of hard boiled egg, then sided by an impossibly soft balady." - Michelin Inspector

11 Best Brunch Places in Toronto | Condé Nast Traveler

"Maha's loyal admirers come far and wide to line up for its original Egyptian brunch offerings (read: not pancakes or omelettes) and it's little wonder why. The place is cozy in every sense: Situated in an unpretentious space filled with warm, rough-hewn woods, a pharaoh mural, baskets, and potted plants, you can actually peep inside the kitchen and see Maha Barsoom, the restaurant's namesake and owner, hard at work, and the staff welcome you like you're walking into their own homes. And the food is just as tasty as if it were, in fact, homemade. One prime example is the ful, a warm emulsion of lava beans cooked overnight with red lentils, then spiced up with cumin, and served with crispy wedges of balady bread—perfect for scooping up every last dollop." - Todd Plummer

I love Mahas Cafe! Whenever I go on vacation to Toronto, I always make time to visit it. I love their food, hot and cold drinks, and the excellent service that the staff always provides. Many thanks to Valentina and Rodrigo for their outstanding service. I highly recommend the hot chocolate and the always fresh hummus—it's a must-try. Without a doubt, I'll be back! :)

If you’re entering from Greenwood the entrance is a clothing store, but you walk in and to the back to get to the cafe. Great atmosphere, super tasty food. The service was courteous and friendly. My group all got different drinks and food, all were tasty. They had run out of some items that my friend wanted but our waiter was super attentive and was doing their best to suggest alternatives. I got the Mona Lisa (drink) with decaf espresso, the waiter warned me that the latte art is not as crisp with decaf but it still looked good! I also got the Egyptian beet salad. It didn’t fill me up as it was meant to be a snack but it was very refreshing and delicious. Would recommend and go again!

In all honesty, despite literally everybody I know having been to Maha's on Greenwood, I never went. I simply am not interested in standing in line for food, no matter how great it may be. So, when I saw this place opened, I figured it was worth a shot one day. Even other locals hadn't heard that Maha's had opened a sister location, mostly because from Queen, you have to walk through a (very cool) clothing shop to find it. There is a sidewalk sign out front, but if you're not careful you may miss it. It was... well, if the OG location is like this, I can understand the queue. It was absolutely delicious. Every single thing I tried was delectable. From the coffee, to the eggs, to the pastries, EVERYTHING. I normally don't like flavoured drinks, but their special Honey Cardamom Latte was very good. The space is really cosy too with plenty of seating indoors and on a somewhat hidden patio at the back. The décor is cute, comfy, bright, and a bit vintage. Honestly, it's an awesome time. I'm so glad they opened this spot.

Cute little place. Had their shrimp and egg salad, tasty and light. Also tried their hot lemon ginger tea- love it. Service is fantastic. Decor is nice

One of my favourite cafes in Toronto, love the atmosphere with all that natural light and the cozy decor. Conveniently they have a selection of sweets, sandwiches, and other ready made grab-and-go items. The Egyptian Falafel (soft boiled eggs surrounded by crispy falafel) is a must in my opinion. I adore the Honey Cardamom latte (available both iced or hot), and if you're dining in I recommend ordering the Cairo Classic. A smaller version of the one you’d get at the restaurant, this Egyptian Breakfast is centered around Foole – flavourful, slow cooked fava beans and served with a side of falafel, pita, salad, and tomato feta. I'm not usually one to order a Grilled Cheese, but theirs is so good. Made with a blend of Gouda, Havarti, and Swiss cheese, this sandwich is also filled with the sweetest dates and is drizzled with honey.

Google
Love the flavours for their speciality lattes, and the variety of sweet and savoury food. I also love the little details in the decor around the space, which I didn’t notice the first few times I was here. Very much recommend dining in so you can enjoy their cute porcelain cups and saucers.

Tried so many pastries and the staff was so nice I think he gave us extras when we took more to go. Beautiful cafe and cool clothing store connected

Yelp
Great ambiance. Worth visiting if you can't get into Maha's brunch because some of the items overlap including their famous honey cardamom latte or their date grilled cheese. One thing that sucks is that there are no outlets so if you're there to work, you can work so long as you have battery. Got the honey cardamom latte with one espresso just instead of two (hate coffee lol) and the cardamom flavor was definitely there but wish there was more honey flavor.

Yelp
Absolutely love this spot and will definitely come back. I'm so glad to finally get to check out this expansion of Maha's. The food was delicious and maintained their great standards and attention to detail. The service was so friendly. The employees were personable and attentive. It is a small cafe with limited seating but I appreciated that everyone was respectful to either grab and go or not overstay. There's also a patio set up during the warmer weather. Highly recommend!

Yelp
When the line is too long at Maha's, just go to Maha's Cafe (based on a true story). Located behind KOTN on Queen St E, Maha's Cafe is a warm and inviting cafe offering light Egyptian eats and middle eastern inspired drinks. I tried the Honey Cardamom Latte, which was delicious and reminded me a bit of Karak Chai!

Yelp
The staff is super friendly here and it's well lit. Although the lemon ginger tea was made with fresh ingredients , this was way over priced for what it was. I believe it was $5-6 for the drink and honestly not worth it. The sandwich though it was made fresh and tasted mediocre I don't know if I would necessarily pay $15 for it again. Overall I gave their place a 4/5 because of the staff. Nothing too special and this is my second time here trying something else different to see if I'd change my mind. It's cute but it's more novelty for what it's worth.

Yelp
BOTTOM LINE: Great to see Maha's expand their footprint on the East end! Although I would anticipate that most people will tunnel through their KOTN store front off of Queen, the "entrance" is actually located off a side street on Carlaw, where you're surprisingly greeted with a public space/patio. Despite the recent tragedies at this intersection, I for one am happy to see this area finally spruce up with more locally owned businesses because it's remained a bit drab post-pandemic. The cafe itself is comfy space filled with pleasant design elements ranging from various art/photos hung on the wall to a row of tea pots strung along the main seating wall. The staff were friendly. You can order various (iced) coffees, teas, and juices, along with their hummus (comes with a complimentary pita, though realistically you'll need two), salads, and sandwiches wrapped in to-go packaging. If you've been to their main resto, you know it's quality, though for those hoping that they would have a fully functional kitchen, it really is *just* a cafe, but a lovely one at that!

Yelp
Went here after a workout and ordered iced americanos, and a couple of sandwiches. The grilled cheese with dates was $15 dollars and honestly not worth that price. There was barely any cheese it was not stuffed at all. The falafel sandwich wasn't bad. But overall I spent almost 70 dollars for just coffee and a few sandwiches. Super overpriced. The vibes were cute, so if I ever went back I would only go for coffee to enjoy the nice seating. But the food is not worth the cost.

Yelp
This restaurant reeks like a sewer or a dumpster! Two workers walked right past me without even acknowledging my existence. When I asked if there was a table available, the response was, "Go stand outside in the line." There were 20 people waiting! So, from a so-called "process" perspective, you'd rather have your customers stand outside for two hours than take their names down and call them when a table is ready? What a joke!

Yelp
A great Cafe from Maha's, especially at their new location! The location is clean, the staff of four are friendly, and there's seating indoors and outdoors. They have coffee and tea drinks, and various goodies including croissants and breakfast pitas. Their baklava are delicious and not too syrupy and sweet. I'm so happy it's so close to my place, and I also love they have partnership with KOTN also!

Yelp
What a beautiful space created here by Mahas and KOTN. It's so nice in there and the outdoor space is special, too. We had the avocado hummus, eggplant dip (I can't spell it!) and hibiscus tea. They heated up the pitas for us- it was delicious. The service was excellent with about 4+ staff helping so that we always felt taken care of. KOTN space was also clean, spacious and inviting. Super easy shopping and chill vibes. This is a beautiful addition to the Carlaw strip.

Yelp
Maha's Café, located near Queen St. E. and Carlaw Ave in Leslieville, is opened by the popular Egyptian brunch place, Maha's. This café location shares a space with the KOTN, a Canadian brand that uses premium Egyptian cotton. If you enter from Queen St. E., the café is located at the back of the store. There is also a separate entrance in the back if you want to directly enter the café instead of walking through KOTN. The café opened this past weekend where they were offering complimentary flowers for anyone who visited either Maha's or KOTN. Maha's Café serves up a variety of drinks and eats (think sandwiches, cakes, pastries, dips, etc.). There are caffeinated beverages (espresso based drinks, fresh brew, cold coffees, specialty lattes, and teas), as well as hot chocolate. In regards to their food, you can find a variety of salads and sandwiches available to dine in as well as to go. They also have their famous snacks available - hummus, foole dip, avocado hummus, babaghanough, etc.) which can be ordered to go or for dine in if you'd like. The space is cozy and beautiful, where as soon as you enter the café, you notice the many small details, plants, and items on display. Inside the café, there are about 5 tables as well as window seating. They also have tables and chairs set up in the back lane as well, if you'd like to sit outside to enjoy your items. The vibe of the café is chill, comforting and welcoming. I stopped by Maha's Café on a Sunday around 11:30am. The place was super busy as there was a line almost out the door. People were also enjoying their beverages and food as well either inside or on the tables outside. I opted for a honey cardamom latte (honey, milk infused with cardamom) and a shrimp and egg salad sandwich (poached shrimp, boiled eggs, orange zest, pickled lemons, dill, coriander, parsley, green onions, grainy mustard, mayo, and iceberg lettuce), both to go. This is actually my first time trying Maha's honey cardamom latte...and I totally regretted not getting the larger size. The latte tasted amazing. The cardamom flavours really come through strong and the honey is not too sweet. The mix of ingredients and flavours work so well together I actually was sad to finish my last drop of coffee! The sandwich was also a unique blend of ingredients - I actually really enjoyed the sandwich as well. Service wise, the staff were extremely friendly and attentive. Although there was a wait, the staff did take their time to make sure each customer had their order fulfilled. They never once seemed panicked about the line and they got through all the drink orders and food orders as fast as they could. Overall, beautiful new space and delicious food and drinks from the ever so popular brunch place Maha's. Definitely will be returning!!!

Yelp
This place is incredible. Food is delicious and I never want to eat falafel again unless there is a soft boiled egg in it, it was soooo good.

Yelp
Cozy, friendly cafe at the back of the KOTN store (entrance from Carlaw through their sunny patio). The coffee options are great, and the service is quick and friendly. The food options are limited to snacks and sandwiches - an ideal afternoon stop!
