With a plethora of Thai restaurants in Portland, it's a tough market to stand out. Mai Thai is a place I consider better than your average, but not the best compared to a handful of my favorites.
Parking is on the street and can be annoying, being located in the cramped SE Portland. There's seating outside for the warm sunny days, and indoors for the colder days (of course). The interior is usually of darker lighting, but nicely decorated.
The workers are nice and usually attentive and quick. However, I've experienced once where they were slower and a little "short" on their customer service. I partially blame that on my large and loud group, but still, not something I like to see.
The food was good. A bit on the pricier side for the proportions in my opinion, but it does fill me up, so it gets the job done. It's nicely put together, so I believe it's the classic case of, "paying for the presentation of food too." I always order Chicken Pad Thai, as that's my way of judging a Thai restaurant. Here, it's on the wetter side, the taste was good, but still too sweet despite me telling them, "Give me the spiciest option you have." If you have a tongue for spice like me and looking for something actually spicy, this place isn't for you. If you can get past that, it's still great tasting.
I like this place, but I won't make the trip out to it. I'll come here again if I was in the neighborhood. I would recommend the same to others.
