18 Knockout Spots for Affordable Dining in Portland

"Mai Thai has been a cornerstone of the Belmont neighborhood for years, adding to the plethora of reliable fast casual Thai spots in Portland. Mai Thai slings crowd favorites like pad Thai and green curry on the regular for less than $15, along with dishes like khao moo dang (red roasted pork with rice) and khao soi (Northern curry noodle soup). However, its lunch time special has barely budged in price since the pandemic. For $12, you can get most of the standard Thai dishes on the regular menu, like drunken noodles and pad see ew, which comes with complementary sides of rice." - Katrina Yentch, Eater Staff

"Andy Ricker’s Thai food is the stuff of legend at this point (with one outpost in Brooklyn and another in Downtown Manhattan), but it’s more than worth than seeking it out in Portland where the empire first began. The original location itself is notoriously dive-y, with multicolored twinkle lights on the ceiling and brightly patterned tablecloths covering the crowded tables. As ever, the papaya salad and the chicken wings are the must-orders, though you can’t go wrong with any of the traditional dishes here."

Gorgeously decorated place with a lot of options on the menu. Almost every option could be made vegetarian. I don't remember the name of my dish but was fresh crispy green beans with tofu. They have chili plate and chili powder if you want to start with lower heat and add slice. Definitely try the mango sticky rice dessert!

Great food & excellent services!!! It hardly find an authentic Thai food but you can find it here.. I really love their Tod Mun Koong and Khao Kha Moo...it's so...YUMMY!!!.. The owner came to greet us with big smile and recommended us good food. We ordered 5 dishes for 4 persons. We also had on the house ice cream... We were so happy!! Will definitely come back to Mai Thai. Highly recommend this Thai restaurant to anyone living around South East!!

Google
Ok so I had to give it a 3 stars but only because it was quick for take out during lunch hour and only because of that, just the food it would be 2 stars. I ordered drunken fried rice and asked for the highest level of spice and I had to add extra pepper flakes, chilli sauce, and even Sriracha to make it "spicy" since it was barely about jalapeno spicy. The portion was decent for fried rice. It also had very little beef, 4 small thinly sliced pieces. It was disappointing due to the fact that with the tip, the problem was short of $19. I usually go to restaurants first before taking my family of 4 and it's safe to say that unfortunately I won't be going to this place again. This is a huge reason I don't like to tip until I eat and have good service.

Google
Absolutely delicious food, I've had the pad thai, the garlic pepper broccoli and the mai thai noodle soup, all were sooo flavorful. I'd recently had jaw surgery the first time I went, and the man serving us was very accommodating and cut up the noodles in my pad thai so it was easier to eat (no other place I ate at would do that for me) so that was much appreciated as well!

We have been ordering from this place for the last couple of years so we decided to go into the restaurant and try it in house. We loved the calm cozy ambience and the staff was phenomenal! When we order out we always order their Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, and the Chicken Satay (which is one of my all time fave things on their menu). It’s always good and hits the spot. Tonight, we ordered the Herb Fish in Three Flavor Sauce and went with the Sea Bass option. It was Amazing! The flavors blended so well and even though it was lightly fried it was so incredibly fresh! The Pad See Ew was also excellent and even better fresh from the kitchen. And finally the salad rolls were HUGE and had a beautiful presentation. We will definitely be eating in the restaurant more often to try some more of their specials!

Google
We ate here last month and it was generally a good experience. The Pad See Ew was just average (3 stars); I've had better at many other restaurants. The Mango Posses, though, was truly excellent (5 stars)! I want to return to this restaurant next time I'm in Portland to try some of the other dishes. Ambiance was pleasant and service was friendly.

Google
The best Thai Food I've eaten for sure. Their Pad See Ew is the star of the show and always cooked perfectly. The sauce isn't overly sweet like most Thai places and instead brings a balance of savory and sweet, the noodles are cooked perfectly and have the right amount of char. I'm also partial to the drunken noodles since I just like them a lot and the crispy egg rolls are delicious as well. The Pad Prim King is also tasty too. The shrimp for any dish is good and I've never had them over cooked which is very easy to do especially on a high heat wok. I eat here at least once every time I'm in Portland and have never been even close to disappointed. If you like Thai food (especially more than just Pad Thai), this place will quickly become your go-to spot in Portland.

Google
We started with wings, Tod Mun Goong & Moo Ping. All excellent! Yellow curry w/seafood was amazing! Mussels, scallops, shrimp & Tilapia, so good! Chu chi Tilapia was very good! The fish was beautifully cooked and the curry sauce was wonderful! Finally the Pad Thai had the perfect amount of spice and the portion was huge, the best I have had in a long time!

Yelp
It was about time that we get back to Mai Thai it's always a pleasure and so delicious. I love their selection of appetizers and now they have specials like the pepper sauce tilapia and some appetizer with curry and potato's and a small shrimp appetizer. All is worth testing since if you like the ingredients it's made of the rest is may Thai magic and it simply tastes great. Service by Nikki is always better than expected and served with a smile Portland has a lot of Thai places make sure you go to Mai Thai and check out their dishes. They have some truly unique ones!

Yelp
We eat a lot of Thai. Like, seriously, a lot. But in all of that we have of late started a quest for the best Thai beef salad (yum nua) in the area, and that's taken us to Thai places we've not been before. Mai Thai is on SE Belmont at 31st, which has been in the dreaded "drive-by" zone, passed en route to other places, but not part of the rotation for regular stops. On our first visit, it was purely whim - we were heading someplace else, saw the sign, there was a miracle parking space right in front so I pulled and boom! off to the races. The ambience was great - very woody, soft lights, quiet. Nearly empty, it was a perfect place for a dinner with light conversation. The aspirations to sample the yum nua were dashed immediately -- the menu had far too many semi-exotic dishes to pass up for something we were literally getting everyplace else. And holy crap it was so good we went back two more times - and still fell prey to "dang, that was so good I want to get it again!" The entrees sampled include the chu chi fish - Tilapia or sea bass lightly sautéed and then covered in curry and veggies - plus the ginger fish - Tilapia topped with veggies and ginger sauce - and one of the chef's specials, kana fai dang, which was pork belly and broccoli in a tangy sauce. Service was prompt and pleasant, the meals were outstanding. Highly recommended that you look towards the front of the menu for the "chef recommends" section, which varies. We still need to head back for the original mission of sampling the yum nua, and hopefully we'll pull that off instead of ordering mostly the same things that delighted us the first time! Highly recommended.

Yelp
We used to come to Mai Thai all the time when we live down the street, so when we were nearby last week we decided to go again. The food here is solid Thai food, just what I remembered from before. It's small inside which is fine and they do also have outside seating. The service was prompt, and friendly.

Yelp
First time at this restaurant and enjoyed the comfortable seating and relaxing ambiance. We had to get to-go boxes, quality and portions are great for the price. Hope to come back & try the lunch special menu
google avatar

Yelp
Needed a place to grab lunch with a friend. I love that the menu is clearly marked with gluten free items. The service was quick! The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The food was delicious! I will definitely be coming back for more. I enjoy that the menu has pictures of the different items, it makes the decision of what to get both easier and harder! Everything looks mouth watering!

Yelp
Food was good, however service was very very slow. The temperature of the food was interesting as it was not very hot when it came out. The flavors were good and the ambiance wasn't too bad. It was a tad humid in the building but that's fine. It's summer in the PNW.

Yelp
This is absolutely the BEST Thai spot in Portland. The menu is beautiful, full of pictures, EVERYTHING on the menu is good, fast and friendly reliable workers and service
google avatar

Yelp
Before you order anything with mangoes in it, ask if they are ripe. We both got dishes with mango in them, and it was almost too hard to eat. Also, everything was a little too salty. If I hadn't been distracted by visiting with an out-of-town relative, I'd have suggested we both send our food back for something more palatable. Friendly service though.
google avatar

Yelp
Awesome place!! Easy delivery and super accommodating. Call them and they will make adjustments so to menu items so you are a happy customer

Yelp
Best Thai food on Belmont by far. Tasty stuff. Service and ambiance are welcoming and friendly, too!

Kenley D.

Yelp
I ordered the pineapple fried rice with tofu and no raisin, it came with shrimp chicken and raisins with little tofu. I'm very disappointed in my order.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was Alright, not what I expected, portion was small and I wish that they had more on the menu to choose from.

Yelp
I've been eating at Mai Thai since I accidentally walked into their old location (over by Lincoln high school) the day before their grand opening. Great food made by great friends! Before I went vegan I was all about the Mango Posse, but now I usually get the Eggplant Basil.

Xtine D.

Yelp
The Pumpkin curry was very good as well as the eggplant stir fry. I just wised they put more pumpkin in the curry. The Tom Yum soup was good. I've had better. This soup is a little too sweet. The staff is great. Very friendly and the restaurant is nice.
google avatar

Lila F.

Yelp
Food is yummy, service is fast, staff is always very nice. I've gotten take-out many times.

Yelp
Came in for a late lunch so the place was pretty empty and was seated right away. Love the decor and had a good ambiance to it. My wife and I ordered the Tom Yum Soup, Pad See Ew, and Pad Thai. My wife does not like onions, cilantro, or raw veggies and they made every dish perfect (which is a rare occurrence at other establishments). Each dish tasted phenomenal and would rate each one pretty much 10s across the board. 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
Excellent service, Flavorful food and amazing cocktails. They have outdoor seating and indoor they have cozy booths.

Yelp
Thai home cooking. Wow can you taste the difference! A lot of Thai restaurants use pre-packaged ingredients for labor-intensive items like rolls... NOT Mai Thai. Everything is hand-made and you can really taste the difference: especially in their crispy rolls. You can taste the love that went in to making them! Nice people, delicious food. This is the spot!

Yelp
Fresh and delicious Thai food that satisfies a craving. Everything arrives steaming hot and flavorful. We eat Thai a lot because two of our friends are gluten free, so ordering from Mai Thai means everyone can get a meal that works for them. Since there are so many gluten free options, we can even do family style. The larb with ground chicken and salad rolls with shrimp are often our appetizers of choice. Enough to share and very healthy! I'm a big fan of Pad Woon Sen, a veggie stir fry with glass noodles, and not many Thai restaurants have this in the menu. So when it's there, I order it or I select the restaurant based on this craving. For protein, I add chicken or shrimp and it's so good. The glass noodles really soak up the flavorful sauce but don't leave you feeling stuffed, just satisfied. We round out the dinner entrees with Pad Thai (not for me; I find the most popular dish for Americans way too sweet) and either the yellow or Panang curry. Service is always friendly with a genuine smile! With so many Thai restaurants in Portland, I don't make it here often, but when we order takeout or decide to dine in, we always enjoy our meals.

Yelp
Good customer service, good prices and tasty food. What else do you need! And one time let me order take out they gave us the wrong thing and they made it right and even gave us a Thai iced tea. Recommended.

Parker S.

Yelp
Consistently great Thai food without breaking the bank. Take out orders are made with the same care as dine in. I've been coming here for a few years now it never misses on flavor and spice.

Sophie A.

Yelp
Favorite restaurant ever! I'm really stingy with my money and barely eat out but this place is worth every penny! I recommend this place to all of my friends. Now that I have had pad thai from here, I always end up dissappointed when I get it from anywhere else! Thank you Mai Thai for all the delicious meals over these past few years.
google avatar

Sarah M.

Yelp
Got the beef pad see ew medium spice. Sooooo good! I wish I got more seeing as I paid around $13 for it (extra dollar for beef instead) really good and spicy. A lot of times, I feel like pad see ew is made too sweet but Mai Thai didn't make it overly sweet and they give you the option of adding a nice kick to the dish if you want. I haven't tried anything else on the menu yet but will be coming back to try their other dishes. Gave them 4 stars because for the price point, I would like to get bigger portions.
google avatar

Deonna W.

Yelp
No wait to be seated on a Saturday night? Surprising because the food was delicious and service was excellent. The papaya pok pok and drunken noodles were great!
google avatar

Helen B.

Yelp
My favorite Thai place. Ever. Wonderful veggie options, put that Veggie Burger down and get over here!
google avatar

Mozey S.

Yelp
Not impressed. Pad See Ew had a weird burnt taste. Definitely the worst I've ever had. Salad rolls were just two big long rolls (instead of a typical four sliced) with tofu just on one end and not the other. Not a huge deal but just not as good as other places. Maybe it was an off day for them or something. But there are too many other Thai places around to justify trying them again.
google avatar

Rachel J.

Yelp
Giving this place 4 stars because the food was good, not great but appreciated the prices and service. We arrived to Portland pretty late and this was one of the few places near our Airbnb that wasn't pizza and was still open. There was only one woman working so we ordered at the counter and she brought food outside to us. We each got a very reasonably priced drink. I ordered the drunken noodles with chicken and my friend ordered the yellow curry with a high spice level. My drunken noodles were pretty standard and I wish the portion had been a little large. His curry was actually spicy which he appreciated. It was nothing life changing but overall a good meal.

Yelp
With a plethora of Thai restaurants in Portland, it's a tough market to stand out. Mai Thai is a place I consider better than your average, but not the best compared to a handful of my favorites. Parking is on the street and can be annoying, being located in the cramped SE Portland. There's seating outside for the warm sunny days, and indoors for the colder days (of course). The interior is usually of darker lighting, but nicely decorated. The workers are nice and usually attentive and quick. However, I've experienced once where they were slower and a little "short" on their customer service. I partially blame that on my large and loud group, but still, not something I like to see. The food was good. A bit on the pricier side for the proportions in my opinion, but it does fill me up, so it gets the job done. It's nicely put together, so I believe it's the classic case of, "paying for the presentation of food too." I always order Chicken Pad Thai, as that's my way of judging a Thai restaurant. Here, it's on the wetter side, the taste was good, but still too sweet despite me telling them, "Give me the spiciest option you have." If you have a tongue for spice like me and looking for something actually spicy, this place isn't for you. If you can get past that, it's still great tasting. I like this place, but I won't make the trip out to it. I'll come here again if I was in the neighborhood. I would recommend the same to others.

Yelp
This is our favorite local Thai spot! Excellent service and wide variety of delicious menu items
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered the pad thai and thai tea with coconut. It was delicious! The pad thai had the right softness of noodle along with the right amount of spice for medium. Thai tea with coconut was even better!
google avatar

Yelp
They are offering limited dine in! Really friendly service, reasonable prices and very good food!! This restaurant hidden gem in Portland. I highly recommended it.

Maria S.

Yelp
The server was very friendly and welcoming! I ordered Yellow curry with tofu and veggies. The inside of the restaurant is clean and has a good vibe :)

Yelp
Was on our way to another Thai place, Kala Thai Noodle & Grill, to check out the khao soi. Unfortunately, they were closing up due to the snow. We headed to Mai Thai, located a few blocks away and were happy that we did! The chicken satay was moist, delicious and the dipping sauce had good peanut flavor. The bowl of khao soi was impressive! It looked like a piece of art and delivered on flavor: coconut and curry balanced the rich broth. In Chiang Mai, you usually get one chicken leg with an order. Here, I got three! For dessert, ordered coconut sticky rice with mango to go. That was a congealed mess but I would definitely go back for their other items! The people who worked here were really sweet, another plus.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the pictures. The food wasn't great. Solely rating this place on the food we ordered only. (The customer service was great but not the food). First time trying this place and the food was way too sweet on ALL the dishes. The dishes we ordered: Chicken Larb (medium spicy): -The flavor was interesting. It was very sour but also sweet, it wasn't awful but it didn't taste like true authentic larb which shouldn't be sweet. We also ordered it to be medium spicy and it was NOT spicy at all. Mango Posse (mild): -This dish is supposed to be their highlight dish according to the waitress but I didn't like this dish. I don't like my seafood to be mixed with sweet stuff so I didn't like it. I only ate the mangos and left the prawns and scallops. It was just way too sweet, I felt like I was just eating dessert and sweet seafood is not tasty. Tom Yum Soup w/seafood (Mild): -This one was the worst out of all the dishes we ordered. Tom yum soup is supposed to be hot and sour and this was ONLY sweet. It was so so sweet, it was gross. Tasted just like the mango posse. Would not recommend this dish. I was really disappointed. Drunken Noodles w/beef (medium spicy): -This dish was the only dish that I was able to kind of eat but it wasn't great. First, I said I wanted it spicy and it was again, SWEET. It wasn't salty enough or spicy at all, it was just mildly sweet. This wasn't sweet like the Tom yum or mango Posse, it was sweet like it lacked salt and spice and they only added a little sugar. Overall: don't recommend this place if you want TRUE, AUTHENTIC Thai food. I don't know why everything was so sweet but this place needs to step it up. Not trying to be rude with my review but just being completely honest. On the bright side, their Thai iced coffee and Thai ice tea was great!

Yelp
Good atmosphere and yummy meals. Lots seating areas were blocked. Feel safe to be here. Take out or dine in are both available. We ate basil eggplants and cashews with tofu (27&28). Right amount of dinner tonight.

Jon H.

Yelp
I ordered through Yelp for delivery and got a call from them saying they longer used the ordering service on Yelp. They couldn't cancel the order and I had to call a secondary company to get it fixed within 2-5 business days. After completing that task I was able to make the order. Food was hot and tasted good.

Yelp
This is coming from someone who is not a fan of Thai food, usually. However, both times I've went, I have enjoyed myself. This was my first restaurant I went into since I got vaccinated. I felt very safe in it. Waitresses both times wore masks. Not crowded and there is outside seating if you prefer it.Their prices are very reasonable for what you get. I got Tom Kha soup, which was very good and I would recommend it for someone who is a picky person like myself. The large is about $9.50 if I remember right. But it is a very large bowl, and full of vegetables, meat, tufo, whatever you want. Their atmosphere is very relaxed and nice. Very clean, very polite. You can tell they take pride in their food and workplace.

Yelp
We just arrived in Portland , around dinner feelin tired and not wanting drive anymore . we had a Airbnb right next door . Just so happens Thai is my Favorite. !!! Good. Beautiful presentation , great tasting vegan options nice environment , friendly service. Highly recommended.

Belle L.

Yelp
I want to like this place, since they are so close to home, but the food is just average. I've gotten the pad se ew twice, both times it's been dry and not flavorful.

Joscelyn P.

Yelp
So sad and disappointed in my dinner today, came for shrimp pad see ew and it came out burnt, I had asked if there was anyway to re make it and the waitress said yes and had it remade which I am very grateful for but the second time it came out just as burnt with almost a smoked taste. Wouldn't recommend:(
google avatar

Jaime E.

Yelp
Great place for Thai food! Pad Thai with dried tofu (I'm not a tofu fan but my vegetarian is), pumpkin curry with chicken, pad see ew with pork (great!) Steamed noodles and coconut rice. All for $32. Can't go wrong! And the service was wonderful. Definitely come here!!
google avatar

Gabrielle E.

Yelp
These gorgeous people delivered to us in an ICE STORM!!! Everything is delicious and even though the wait was long, it was well worth it to have someone risk their safety to bring us food. Tip big, y'all!!!!! These amazing people and business deserve our support!
google avatar

Vanessa D.

Yelp
Open on the 4th of July, super friendly welcoming and fast! Food was out within 10 min, piping hot. The veggies were perfectly al dente, the tofu was delicious (I'm very carnivorous), the rice noodles very tasty, fresh basil as garnish. I got the basil eggplant and the eggplant was not too chewy, not bland, not oily, none of the things that can go wrong with the dish did. Just fresh, flavorful, well spiced and garnished. The portions are not too large too which is great. Just the right size of hot delicious food, not a giant plate of bland that you struggle to finish, take home and don't end up eating. Well done! We will be back.

Allison H.

Yelp
it was amazing! the food was so good and the costumer service was very good as well! do recommend if wanting thai food!!

Dragon S.

Yelp
The best beef Pad See Ewe that I have come across. Also the best fresh rolls. And one of the best Yellow Curries. This has become my go-to place for my favorite Thai dishes and I happily drive from the Happy Valley to get it. Good service too!
google avatar

Marina B.

Yelp
Delicious!!! Ordered his takeout yesterday, everything was so good, will be back again soon! Thank you!

sarah e.

Yelp
I've never eaten better tasting Thai food. This place will blow your mind with their flavorful and gorgeous dishes! Their Mango & Chicken dish from their street food menu blew my mind! I also tried their Papaya Pok Pok and the Khao Moo Yang; both super duper tasty and filling. Our waitress was very nice and snappy on getting our drinks! By far my most favorite Thai place in the area, I definitely recommend.
google avatar

Tina L.

Yelp
This is my favorite Thai restaurant! The closest cooking to my mommas home cooked meals. I used to order the pork yellow curry lunch special all the time when I worked across the street. The atmosphere is so mellow and relaxing! The best prices and customer service. :) I also like the chicken satay with peanut sauce. Yum!

Yelp
Y'know? All I really needed was someone to feed me pad Thai and it happened to be 20 minutes before close and it was just.... Ready so quick and it was ever so delicious. Their kindness was excellent.
