Why Hot Dogs in Maine Are Bright Red

"The Maine Oyster Company combines the two at its raw bar in Portland’s West Bayside neighborhood, serving The $50 Dog, a luxe caviar- and lobster-topped red snapper that customers order once or twice a week, by Jerome’s estimation. Another spin, the Sea Dog, features aioli made with dulse — a seaweed that’s also red." - Adam H. Callaghan

We went there for their happy hour and we ate so happy that we did!! All oysters were so fresh and they were very generous with Prosecco. It is located in a kinda weird / dodgy neighbourhood but it is worth going there!

Me and my boyfriend did the oyster shucking class! It was awesome! John and his team were very knowledgeable. I went in knowing 0 about oysters & came out as a semi-pro 🤣. 10/10 recommend!

Google
I signed up for an oyster shucking class here while visiting a friend in the area. I thought it would be a fun experience but I had no idea how much I would learn! My instructor was warm, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. She made the class very accessible and fun while answering all my questions about the different varieties and farming methods. The oysters themselves were also incredibly delicious and fresh, and I was able to enjoy some wine while shucking in their lovely back patio. I have had lots of oysters and these were up there with the best I've ever had! I left the class excited to eat more oysters than ever before. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Highly recommend!

My son and I booked online with no idea what to expect. We are visiting Maine from Iowa and wanted oysters. I’m glad we booked here! We shared a platter of a variety of oysters then attended the oyster shucking class. Everything was very, very good. Very laid back, low stress, informational, fun, and excellent quality. Great experience! We also attended the oyster farm tour out of their base camp facility about an hour away. It was an amazing tour. Captain Joe is an excellent guide and made sure we had a relaxed and fun experience. We learned a lot and had a really great time. Everyone was easy to talk to, no one tried to upsell anything, everyone seemed to take pride in what they are doing and enjoyed themselves. It was just awesome across the board. Highly recommend eating here, booking the shucking class, and touring the oyster farm with Captain Joe!

My wife and I had a window of time on one of our vacation days in Portland, ME and so glad that we decided to stop by Maine Oyster Company for an oyster shucking class. Make sure to say hello to John (owner) and Bryn (his sister) for one of their events. Their website allows for muscle, cocktail sauce, and other merch. Thanks for a phenomenal time! #sourcedlocal #oysters #portlandmaine #greatcustomerservice

Google
Outstanding! This review is for ordering and delivery of oysters to Colorado, not dining in the restaurant. I ordered The Taste of Maine package which consists of 36 oysters from 3 different farms and , in this case, a pineapple jalapeno mignon sauce. The oysters arrived exactly as planned and were in excellent condition. I thought 36 oysters for 4 people would be too many. I was wrong! The oysters from each farm shared a creamy texture, but were distinctive in taste and level of brininess. Before we knew it, all 36 oysters were shucked and consumed! Added benefit? I was able to show my oyster-loving friends that there are oysters from Maine that rank with the finest in the world! And they are only an overnight shipment away. Thanks!

Google
We visited Maine Oyster Co. while staying in the area for a short visit in Portland. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy with many different seating options available. Sean & John were very warm, and personable. We were more than happy to hear about their experience as oyster farmers, and the oysters they produced, which were incredibly delicious. Maine Oyster Co. was not only a great spot for oysters, but a good way to get a taste of what Maine is all about- friendly people, and great seafood.

Google
I eat oysters all the time, all over the place … these are the best, freshest and cleanest tasting oysters I’ve had apart from ones directly out of the sea. The service was warm (Carole was so kind and friendly). The concept is simple, the food is approachable and the mission is great food with a side of sustainability and education. Go get some oysters, then have some more.

Yelp
Hello everyone, I love oysters and this is a great place to imbibe. I recommend these guys. Great product. I have nothing else that I could contribute. Lynn

Yelp
Super fresh oysters, you could almost hear the waves. They offered a nice selection of local oysters. It's good my husband didn't know how limited the rest of the menu was, because he is not an oyster fan. He is now! The place is small but nice. Service was outstanding. Patrons were a mix of locals and tourists.

Yelp
you have to try this oyster bar when you come to Portland! I felt obligated to stop here and introduce my friend to Maine Oyster Company for his birthday trip to Portland, based off of my first visit. we made reservations for 5pm for the perfect appetizer time prior to dinner. outside you may question if you're at the right place, and you likely are! it is welcoming and cozy inside, there are a few tables, a couch and record player, along with a bar and a larger booth in the back. i absolutely love the map of exactly where each type of oyster comes from, and on the menu listed who farmed them. sean served us for the majority of the evening, explaining in detail taste and unquestionable quality of each type. john also took great care of us. they both went above and beyond our entire visit and articulated their knowledge in a simplified and fun way. what you came for: the oyster review. these oysters are some of the best I've ever had. they had 8 options on the evening of 3/2/2024, including: cape smalls, cora cressy, empress, john's river, love point, permaquid, weskaeg river, and wolfe neck. based on my last visit, i knew i wanted some love points and wolfe necks. we also tried the empress, john's river, and weskaeg river. they were all phenomenal, and along with your typical lemon, cocktail sauce and horseradish sauce, they included champagne mignonette and maine blueberry mignonette. throw it all on there, i promise you'll love it. love point and empress stood out to my friend, so we ordered another half dozen of the love point. all of oysters we tried were 5/5, and i love the experience of being able to compare different oysters at once! for drinks, we went with their maine root sodas, one root beer and one ginger brew. we loved the all natural ingredients, classic taste without all the extras. the ginger brew was impressive, equally spicy and sweet, and not overpowering. love how everything is local. oyster selection: variety from different areas phenomenal quality, extremely fresh ambiance: 5/5 drinks: 5/5 food: 6/5 service: 5/5 maine oyster company: 5/5

Yelp
I really wanted to like this place! I love oysters and this was one of the places in town that I haven't been to... Oyster bars are one of my favorite places to go to in Maine because of the environment - my normal experience is you get some apps, you try out some oysters, you chat with staff about where the oysters come from in Maine/what they're favorites are. Every oyster bar in Portland I've been to has been warm and inviting and so unfortunately, when the experience is not that, it feels really... odd and off. We came in around dinner time on a Thursday. It was super quiet, which surprised me but was also exciting because it felt much more cozy. Granted, we came in pretty starving, but we sat there after getting our drinks for a good 15-20 minutes before anyone even introduced themselves. There were two other groups (a couple and a group of four) and a few people at the bar, and no one came over to us. We watched as other tables were checked in with multiple times with multiple staff. It was unclear who our waiter/waitress was or who to ask and it just felt ~awkward~. God knows I never want to be the person who has to say "hey! Can I be your customer?" When my mom ended up asking a woman if she was our waitress, she replied "sure" which also felt...confusing? I found myself apologizing for asking, explaining that we were hungry and wanted to order. Yikes. It also doesn't help that after that, staff at the bar began discussing bad Yelp reviews they've gotten... I didn't want to give a bad review! I had an open mind! But it felt unwelcoming :-/ I will say, no complaints with the food (well except silly anxious me forgot to order the oysters Rockefeller with no bacon... I felt intimidated sending it back after all the energy of the night, so I picked them out...not the best environment) Still delicious tho! They also do their own unique blueberry mignonette which was super delicious !!! I do agree with some other reviews that slightly bigger menu would be great... the options truly are oysters, hot dogs, or lobster rolls. Thank god for the oyster Rockefeller special that night! I'd maybe come again because maybe this was a fluke...I hope it was, but I have some favorites in Portland I'd put ahead of this one

Yelp
Best oysters I've ever had! Cocktails are the only thing missing from this gem. Excited to come back next time I'm in town.

Yelp
We have been here a couple times. The oysters are always fresh and they have very interesting and cool mignonettes to add to the oysters. We had a bottle of wine which was decently priced and very good. They have a small inside but we typically get right in. We also tried one of their oyster shooters and it was great. I wouldn't come here for the other food but the oysters are great!

Yelp
Ordered: Hot Pearl (complimentary): Zardetto prosecco and oyster with strawberry habanero hot sauce and chives Aya's take: We were staying at an Airbnb nearby and got invited for a complimentary pearl collection shooter. And who I am to say no to a free oyster! The oyster was super fresh and the hot sauce was super unique. I can't say I've had an oyster with prosecco but it actually went well together. Nice touch from the Airbnb owner and definitely an interesting try!

Yelp
To say that a dish is the best I've had in Portland is a high bar, but Maine Oyster Company cleared it easily. We popped in for a early dinner (really late lunch??) and - as always - were looking forward to sampling the oysters. We did get a dozen (all were splendid!) but we also had the great good fortune to be there for the scallops. Today, they featured spring scallops: perfectly seared, accompanied with a drizzle of fresh English peas & purée, bacon jam and hen of the woods mushrooms. We've had nothing but excellent food the entire time in Maine but this scallop dish was over the top. When I say perfectly seared, I mean perfectly - crisp edges, moist interior and I have to confess...the first order was so good that we ordered a second. I have NO shame in admitting that! The oyster selection featured some we hadn't tried, so we went with Basket Island, Cora Cressy and Kettle Cove - all excellent, but particularly enjoyed the Cora Cressy variety. Recommend you give those a try when you see them on the menu. Another item I recommend at Maine Oyster Company is the deviled egg - lovely level of salt and the crème fraiche makes it a taste sensation. Because we're staying in the Old Port section, we walked from our hotel - just a bit more than half a mile - so not sure if they have a parking lot. There does d see, to be some street parking available. The restaurant closes early (6pm), so plan to pop in during the early afternoon. There's a good local beer list, a solid wine selection and a limited spirits selection. The restaurant itself isn't large, but does have a very small outdoor seating area in the alleyway beside the building. I truly wish I could give more than five stars because the service was as good as the food - friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. While this is our first visit to Portland, we've already decided we'll be back and one of our first stops will be Maine Oyster Company.

Yelp
lol l Good selection of oysters. Canned wine from South Africa was great. Mourvidra and Granoche service was fine. Show from window was very interesting with homeless. Would go back for the oysters. Also, I had a tincaviar which hit the spot and next time we'll have some ice cold vodka with it! Great find in a goody town.

Yelp
Limited menu and cold lobster roll. I knew something was off but based on reviews got their oysters but they gave me food poisoning. DO NOT EAT HERE. Not worth the wait or the price AND you'll probably get very sick.

Yelp
Came here without reservations at ~3pm on a Saturday and we were seated almost immediately. The place was busier than we expected for being midday on a weekend, but that was just a positive honestly as it meant the place was popular enough to have others there at an off-time. Four of us shared 24 oysters to start and honestly, each was well-shucked and full of unique flavor. We enjoyed the love points and wolfe necks the most just for overall flavor, but all of them were good in their own ways. We tried ordering a second plate for the two we mentioned, but they ran out of wolfe necks in between rounds - definitely a bummer. Regardless, we just got 12 more of the love necks and they were delicious! For oysters at a decent price, I'd recommend this location for sure. The ambiance was a great vibe and the service was very kind as well. If I'm ever in the area again ( albeit the restaurant is sort of on an off road so you definitely have to be intentional about coming to this spot ), I'll definitely stop by!

Yelp
This hidden gem is absolutely amazing. You simply MUST go. It's in a bit of a rougher area , so I have a feeling this may deter some folks and they also may not get the foot traffic that other restaurants get BUT it's beyond worth it. The restaurant itself is quant, charming and exciting all at the same time. You're welcomed in by their friendly staff and a beautiful display of local oysters. The wood bar, tables and seating with calm lighting gives it a rustic feel that makes you just want to cozy on up. The best part- the oysters! Oh my goodness I have been ruined- I will forever hold my standards for oysters to the ones I experienced here. The level of freshness is unmatched. The staff takes the time to explain where each oyster is from and the tasting notes associated with them. It's like you're literally transported to sitting on the oyster boat picking them out of the water and eating them right there. That's how good these are. The team makes great suggestions. They are attentive, informative and have superb customer service skills. This will forever be a place I will yearn to return to.

Yelp
A friend recommended this restaurant to me and it was one of the best places to visit on my day trip! First of all, let's get the elephant out of the room first - the location itself is in a questionable looking area. Portland isn't a large city so my friend and I decided to walk there and we were not sure there was even a restaurant here when we got there. Our uber driver at the end eventually told us that he was surprised there was a restaurant here when he arrived. Other than that, everything inside the restaurant was amazing. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable. I think we got there just as a class was finishing up their shucking class. I got a dozen oysters and they were all delicious. I love the presentation of the oysters down to the little bottles of vinegar. My friend got a combo oyster with caviar and a shot and she said that it was a great pairing. Although this place is called the Maine Oyster Company, the star of the show was the deviled egg. I don't know what they put in that egg, but it was creamy, refreshing, and bursting with flavor. It was so good that we ordered another two deviled eggs to end the meal.

Yelp
The freshest Maine oysters you can get, with the friendliest staff. Creative mixed drinks, and interesting wine selections. A classically trained chef turns out a small menu of amazing seafood dishes from the tiny kitchen, changing weekly. A recent scallop dish was spectacular. Also, try the deliciously prepared red snappahs, with creative seaweed aioli topping. Cozy, rustic space with monthly art exhibit on the walls. Don't let the abundance of homeless folks, often milling about on this street due to nearby social services, deter you!
google avatar

Kristin S.

Yelp
We were lucky enough to get squeezed in for a dozen oysters without having a reservation. Tiny, quaint space with tons of help. We shared (3) different types of oysters and all were from the Casco Bay Area. Fresh, served with the common mignonette & their own concoction with blueberries and a little spice. The experience was delightful and delicious. A little off the beaten path but SO worth it!

Tina S.

Yelp
Best oysters. Great , friendly service. Would go back!! Staff was so knowledgeable. A must visit!

Yelp
We were visiting Maine for vacation, and a highlight was dining at Maine Oyster Company. We had reservations but got there early, so they sat us at the oyster bar. No problem because we were down for some oysters. We ordered wine and had a dozen and a half oysters of various oysters. The woman shucking them (forgot her name) was so nice and easy to talk to. We eventually made it to our table. The only thing that I am knocking them a star for is the menu is really limited...the selection to choose from is minimal and one of the items is a hot dog which I still don't get why Maine Oyster Company had a hot dog on their menu??? I had a lobster roll. We also ordered some baked oysters that were called jalapeno poppers. Everyone was so nice which made the experience even better. We were there past closing at the end of the meal, and the hostess brought us some limoncello, so nice way to end the night. Many people comment on the neighborhood. We did walk there but decided to get a Lyft back as the area is good for the most part but it is near a homeless shelter which puts some shady characters out there (not a reason to miss out on this great restaurant).

Yelp
Impeccable hospitality! As a restaurant owner I will say our most recent visit to MOC was the perfect model of hospitality...and the food & drinks were perfect. Portland is an amazing restaurant city, but venture outside the old port & experience gems like MOC. It is truly one of the best Portland has to offer & thanks to the MOC team for providing us with a spectacular experience!!!

Yelp
Consistently great. This place is a gem. Plump fresh Maine oysters and Prosecco on tap. Oh my. Champagne mignonette. Green olives with rosemary bruschetta. And oh those deviled eggs. If only they were open past eight!
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
We tried all the oysters here and this place lived up to the hype. All the oysters were fresh and tasted top tier. If you are driving through Maine, definitely stop by this place if you want oysters (way better than what they have in bar harbor and the surrounding area).
google avatar

Jacob S.

Yelp
Me and my fiancé did the oyster shucking class on Tuesday night with John and it was phenomenal! I would recommend this play to anyone that's ever in portland! Great atmosphere and energy! Service was great and we learned a lot about the oyster industry as well!

Deirdre C.

Yelp
Hidden gem for oyster lovers. If you love oysters washed down with a glass of chilled wine or local brew this place is for you. Off the beaten path and accepting reservations you can sit back relax and enjoy without the wait lines and hustle and bustle of the waterfront. The lobster rolls are great too. Enjoy

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
We found the Maine Oyster Company by chance and were blown away by the dining experience: fantastic food (try the fish chowder), atmosphere and vibe. Plus the staff gets extra kudos for helpfulness. Due to the upcoming eclipse, there was not a room to be found in all of Portland. The owner and his sidekick devoted quite a bit of time to helping us find a place to hang our hats. Definitely above and beyond. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

Caleb E.

Yelp
This place is amazing!! Don't let the neighborhood or outside scare you off. This place is so worth it. The inside is perfectly decorated, the owner is extremely friendly and very willing to help you learn about local oysters. Now to the oysters, they are the freshest and best tasting oysters I've ever had! Please give the place a try in when in the Portland area!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Really wanted to go to Maine Oyster Company during our trip to Portland. When we first drove up to the restaurant, we got a little discouraged by the neighborhood because it was a little sketchy. We found a spot just around the corner from the restaurant so we decided to risk it and I'm so glad we went! We went around 5pm without a reservation just to kill time before a dinner reservation later in the evening. They were really pleasant and seated us even though we hadn't made a res. We decided to stick with oysters and some wine since we had plans to eat dinner later. Our server had great recommendations for wine and I would say that our experience here overall was so great. I almost didn't want to leave to make it for our dinner reservation. The restaurant was so cozy and I felt like I could sit there for hours sipping on wine and chatting away. Don't let the run-down neighborhood deter you from trying this place out! It is absolutely worth it!
google avatar

Angie K.

Yelp
My friends and I came here during our trip to Portland. It's not in the best neighborhood, so be warned -- don't walk around when it's dark. Interior wise, we came during "off hours" as a mid afternoon snack (4pm ish?) so I can't comment too much on the potential crowd, but I could see that there weren't too many tables inside (probably an effort for COVID distancing -- a plus). We tried all of the oysters of the day, then ordered some of our favorites. We all had different ones, but I think overall favorites were the Cadillac, Kettle Cove (my personal fave), and Wolfe's Neck. The platter came with some yummy sauces/dressings. My friend made a party foul and he knocked over his wife's oyster onto the table -- nooo! The ladies there overheard our commotion and came over right away, and brought us a replacement, on the house. Superb service. I'm a fan and will definitely come back during my next trip!

Mario M.

Yelp
We really enjoyed our first time in to the Maine Oyster Company, we went into just get a drink and a few oysters but ended up getting a few drinks and a couple plates as well. Bryn and staff were helpful picking out oysters although we did end up trying all of them and we really enjoyed the Tuna sashimi dish. Nice spot with very accommodating staff and cool vibe, we will be back.

Yelp
First stop in Portland, Maine. We didn't have a reservation but the staff was welcoming and they seated us at the bar right away ! We got their daily special oysters. You can choose to get just one oyster, 6 or 12. They are still priced at $2 each. Really appreciated that they describe their daily specials; this was unique as I didn't find a lot of restaurants doing that. It definitely helped us make our choices. We decided to get 2 each of 5 popular choices and 1 each of the remaining 2 choices where the description didn't sound too appetizing to us. Even in this aspect the staff was very friendly and helped us with our order. The oysters were all perfectly shucked. Immensely enjoyed eating here; the experience and food. They also added a complimentary sauce to go with the oysters. Refreshing and delicious ! We also got the seadog with kelp mayo (this is traditional Maine hotdog with kelp mayo on top for $12). Never had it before and thought that it was quite interesting to eat a hotdog that is red. Nonetheless it was quite tasty ! We didn't try the oyster and liquor shooter as most options were a little too pricey for just one oyster and a shot of cocktail (except the hot pearl which is $5) This is a great oyster bar and definitely recommend this restaurant. Will stop here again if I am in the area :)
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
A great experience - a little cozy spot with amazingly fresh oysters shucked upon ordering. Today they had 6 different choices and all were great. I ordered all 6 (twice!) and while all were delish, I think the Love Point was my favorite. Also tried the seafood chowder with haddock, halibut, clams and BACON! Yum! Small but nice selection of alcoholic beverages. Menu is pretty limited aside from oysters and a few choice items. This is great place to indulge in oysters and a drink but if you want a more extensive selection, it may not fit the bill. That said, definitely pop in for a dozen oysters, great service and you will be in Nirvana
google avatar

Timothy C.

Yelp
As other people have mentioned, this little spot is in a bit of a sketchier area. So I would recommend coming on the earlier side to be safe. But don't stay away! The oysters, mignonette, and lobster rolls are all high quality. They have some nice drink offerings to wash it down as well. We didn't get to try it, but I heard that they hold oyster shucking classes as well. That would be an interesting experience.
google avatar

Natasha S.

Yelp
If you love oyster and want to learn how to shuck them from a master then This is the place . Sean was amazing and very knowledgeable . In no time my husband was a master at Shucking Oysters. I had an amazing lobster roll and a fantastic cocktail. The staff was friendly and welcoming. It is defiantly on our tour of Maine activity list for all our visiting friends. I love to be punny so here goes" ah shucks it was so much fun" lol! Corny I know.
google avatar

Jackie R.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic. Oysters were fresh and shucked beautifully. The wine was crisp and paired well with the oysters. Service was friendly. Happy hour oyster prices couldn't be beat!

Kim G.

Yelp
While vacationing with my sister she insisted we visit MOC for some oysters and Lunches. We were lucky enough to snag some seats at the bar. Chef Sean is exceptional - the menu is simple yet elevated and his dishes were phenomenal. Olivia shucked and served us the best oysters we've ever had and Carol was non stop entertainment, we loved her upbeat presence and limoncello. The staff made us feel like family. Highly recommend MOC!

Yelp
Super delicious fresh oysters ! Couldn't stop ordering more very local vibes. The service is wonderful, people are very friendly Would love to visit once again but was only here for vacay
google avatar

Busy B.

Yelp
The food menu has been paired down severely since the most recent reviews. They only have oysters, clam chowder, hot dog, lobster roll, and hot dog + lobster. No scallop ceviche, no deviled eggs. The lobster roll is only served cold and it's okay but not as good as Highroller's. The chowder was more cream than flavor and wasn't thickened. I prefer Gilbert's Chowder House. The water glasses are weirdly tiny, like barely larger than shot glasses. Most expensive meal I had in Portland and the most disappointing. On the plus side, the service is very nice and attentive.
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Best lobster roll in town, hands down. It's almost an entire lobster, packed into a perfectly toasted roll. Do you have two options, a cold with mayonnaise which is great, and after I had that one, I had the warm with butter lobster roll which I had to ask for especially. It was again hands-down the best lobster roll, it was packed with so much lobster meat, about one lobster worth. It was better than Eventide, lobster Company, Sopo, and Luke's. If you do not come here and get the lobster roll, you're doing a disservice to yourself. Also their oysters are great, standard oyster, good prices. Overall ambience is fantastic. The area is slightly ghetto however no parking issues, I felt safe, and the lobster roll was worth it. I mean so worth it, I had two.

Yelp
This is my first time to Portland, Maine in 20 years. I'm so glad I tried the Maine Oyster Company. Everything from the service to the food was excellent! The selection of local east coast oysters was fantastic. I love the card you get with a description of how each oyster taste. The description is spot on. The lobster roll was stuffed with well cooked juicy lobster. And to wash it down, they had the perfect Czech Pilsner. Maine Oyster Company, I'll be back!

Bren S.

Yelp
My sister recommended this restaurant to me knowing I had a two day business course in Portland. The restaurant is amazing. The staff were really knowledgeable as to price, good, available and popular. Of course, it goes without saying the company's name says it all. The restaurant and staff haven't forgotten a thing in the way they cook and present your oyster dish. The ambience of the place is fantastic. It is a true New England vibe. Although the inside is small, once you start with the deviled egg and bite into that fantastic flavor, you forget about the size of the restaurant. I have eaten in bigger, fancier oyster restaurants on the New England Coast that did not have the wonderful oyster dishes the Maine Oyster Company presents to its customers. There is enough variation in the menu that even the children can find something they will love. Of course, my interest is on any kind of oyster dish. All of which are cooked to perfection - never overcooked. I have had the oyster shooter, oysters on the half shell and fried oysters. Yum, Yum. This review is making me want to drive South to Portland for a great oyster meal. Do not pass this restaurant by!

Yelp
Wowza!! You had me at prosecco on tap. The service was outstanding. The drinks so yummy. The oysters so fresh and delicious. Honestly, I could of stayed all night and consumed every single oyster in the place.

Yelp
Great spot to stop by when visiting Portland! We went right after open on Friday and the bar and another table were already filled, yet it was peaceful and quiet. Lobster roll was delicious! The staff was friendly, attentive, and helpful. We picked the oyster selection that was popular that week and they were all fresh and tasty. Several locals stopped by to pick up oysters to make at home or for a weekend trip while we were there, so visitors and residents alike enjoy this place!

Yelp
Maine Oyster Company is so aesthetically pleasing! In addition to how cute this little place is, they also have a large variety of local oysters. Each oyster runs for about $2/oyster, and $1/their selected oyster during happy hour! Check out their special! All of the employees here are pleasant and welcoming. To keep the aesthetic, they serve their special mignonettes in test tubes with a cork stopper. We are guilty of loving east coast oysters a bit too much... we ordered all of their oysters and got a total of 48!! We were a fan of all of them. They have taste cards as well that help you describe each oyster as you go along. The area is definitely sketchy, as several homeless live nearby. This is a bit away from the usual commercial street.

Yelp
Excellent service. It's a small spot, very quiet. I love oysters so this was it for me. I ordered 24 oysters along with a seafood chowder and beverages. It was great. Servers were nice as well. No wait time at all.

Yelp
We have been eating oysters for a combined fifty years. The oysters (48 total) that my friend, visiting from the Midwest, and I, a new Maine resident, had two nights ago at Maine Oyster company, were far and away the best we have ever had in our lives. The temperature? The mignonette? We couldn't figure it out. Please go and you have the same experience and figure out why and how, please let us know.

Yelp
OMG! So freaking good!! So fresh, clean and melt in your mouth oysters. Wow! The best I've had by far! Will definitely be back when in Maine someday. Thank you for a memorable experience.

Yelp
As a local this has been my go to spot for oysters but after my recent experience sadly I'll be moving on. They started out authentically Maine - fresh oysters from their and other local farms with tankards of beer, lobster rolls and a few other snack plates at reasonable prices. The last few times I've gone prices have been higher and the plates are trying to be foodie vs. good local Maine fare. Too many Maine restaurants are becoming Boston and New York wanna be's - I miss the Maine fare menus you could find all over the state and it's sad. When MOC stops charging $12 for a very small glass of overly sweet sangria and gets back to the basics I'll go back. $100 for 3 glasses of wine and 18 oysters is a bit rich for my blood.

Yelp
I took a "refresher course" at MOC in June since I've now become addicted to home shucking. Emily taught me how to shuck those challenging oysters with the curved hinge. A great variety of oysters, so so fresh, and what a great space, so much fun, and so informative.

Yelp
Called to change my reservation and push it back because we were arriving in to town later than expected. Person who answered the phone said she could BUT not sure how the kitchen would like that. Why bother to say yes? Last thing I want is for a kitchen to be upset I choose to spend my money in their establishment that pays them? I was floored by her response and I kindly told her I would go to somewhere where by business was appreciated and wanted. Never stepped foot in the restaurant and never will. We ended up eating at Isa Bistro where we have a very positive experience.

Yelp
Had the best experience here! Divine oysters and the staff are just the loveliest! Highly recommend the shucking class and time with Zoey. She is so knowledgeable and makes the experience fun and easy. Don't miss it!

Yelp
Great selection of oysters, friendly and knowledgeable staff, cozy. 8 varieties tonight, had 3x of each during happy hour. What a deal, plus $5 beers. Will be back many times. Plus, they were working hard decorating for Christmas when I walked in!
